LADIES GOLF LIFESTYLE 05

The Henry Cooper Golf Tournament was started fifteen years ago by Alan Chessman, who, after taking his own son to a golfi-ng event and being told he could not walk the course or speak to his son during the competition, decided to create a tourna-ment in which juniors could experience the ‘tour feeling’ and parents could follow and support their children. This is certain-ly the case at this year’s event. It has attracted elite boys from across Europe, including Portugal, Switzerland and Sweden. The format is a 72-hole competition over three days. Unfortunately due to weather conditions the final day was reduced to 18 holes, but did not dampen the spirits of all involved. The Nizels Golf Club has produced an amazing course for the competition; the greens were in great condition, and there are some challenging holes in a wonderful setting. The tournament could not have gone ahead without the support from the club members who volunteer every year to assist in the event. Their enthusiasm and kindness can be felt across the course. The pro-am event took place on Thursday, played via a shotgun start. The weather was testing. The charity auction after the event raised money for the Henry Cooper Charity that orga-nises bursaries to deserving and talented junior golfers. The event’s generous sponsors included Sixth rental, who supplied the event vehicles, Savills the score boarding system and of course Ladies Golf Magazine who sponsored the hospitality marquee.

Ladies Golf Lifestyle was proud to support and invite Nathan Baden, the first Portuguese Federation Entrant. The highlight was a superb 3rd in the Ladies Golf Lifestyle Sponsored Pro Am team, headed up by Jamie Little. We plan to bring one male and one female from the Federation next year. This year’s competition has included girls for the first time in preparation for full inclusion tournament in 2013. Sixteen-year-old Jerri Sewell, was one of six girls invited to attend this year’s event.

Jerri plays for both the Ladies Kent 1st and Junior teams. Based at Shooters Hill Golf club Kent, Jerri’s preparations for the competition included the weather forecast: “I checked the weather forecasted and it was going to pour down and be really windy, so I practiced low shots and short game, I think this has really helped me”.

It must have paid off as Jerri was the winner of the Best-Girl Award. Jerri has just finished her GSCEs and is spending the summer playing golf every day and hopes to play College Golf in the USA after her A levels; she is confident in her abilities and a rising star to keep your eyes on.Cecillie Fenn-Ipen, 14 years old, was invited from Denmark. Her home course is near Copenhagen. Cecillie has travelled

overseas to attend tournaments but this was her first Eng-lish course. I asked Cecillie about her experience this week playing against the boys: “it is a little bit different, it was very fun”. Cecillie is not only a good golfer but is a National Danish Badminton Champion. She presently spends her time between both sports. When I asked her what her hopes for the future were she said simply, “I want to be the best.” This young lady is confident, has the support of her home club. The winner this weekend was Craig Howie, winning at -12, with rounds over the competition days of 69/70/65. Craig’s home course is Peebles in Scotland. When I asked him how he coped with the tournament conditions he replied, “I play in this wea-ther all the time”. If you have played golf in Scotland, I am sure you will all agree with him. Craig is the current Scottish Boys Champion. He also hopes to attend Sterling University and will continue to play competition golf, with an aim to playing on the European Tour in the future.

Henry Marco, Henry Cooper’s son, was present for the entire event, watching the event and supporting the volunteers on the course. “Dad had a soft spot for this competition, when Alan asked him to be involved he was over the moon. He always loved youngsters being involved in sport, whatever that sport maybe and golf was something he had a real passion for when he retired from boxing. For John and I to be involved in our own little way is an honor and we are very proud”. This year’s event has also attracted children from local schools who have been receiving coaching. The community project ‘Showcasing Excellence, Inspiring All’, has been visiting schools across the West Kent area and giving the children a taste of golf using Tri-Golf and Golf Extreme equipment. At the event a coaching session took place, bringing parents and children together.

Next year, the competition will include elite girls from across Europe. The future of the this event is very strong; the continu-ing support from the Cooper family and enthusiasm and drive from Alan Chessman in organising the event will only reinforce the success of the tournament which has been the platform for European Tour players for the past 15 years, the likes of Chris Wood and Tom Lewis who have both competed in the tournament. The future of Junior Golf looks very promising. A Q&A with Dr Haruhisa Handa, Chairman of ISPS (International Sports Promotion Society)

You have been supporting the game of golf around the world for more than 15 years. Why golf?

I love the game. Both pld watching golf has given me a tremendous amount of enjoymentand satisfaction throughout my life. It has been extremely good for business and I have also mademany rewarding friendships through golf. My support for blind and disabled golf, which has drivenISPS’s sponsorship of professional tournaments all over the world, began when I met a blind golfercalled Ron Anderson in Perth, Australia, 23 years ago. He was one of the happiest men I have evermet and, with only five per cent vision, he played superb golf, beating me easily over nine holes. Iimmediately asked my coach in Japan to start teaching blind people to play golf. From then on I haveworked to raise the profile of blind and disabled golf, sponsoring high profile events and setting upthe Japan Blind Golf Association in 1988 and establishing the International Blind Golf Association(IBGA) in 1998. The IBGA was set up to better coordinate the efforts of blind golf associations aroundthe world and is the governing and sanctioning body for international blind golf events. I remain aPatron of both organisations.

You are supporting seven professional tournaments this year - how, if at all, are you hoping toincrease that number either this year or in the future?

I am very pleased with both the number and quality of events ISPS is supporting internationally thisyear and we have a number of notable ‘firsts’ in 2012. I am especially delighted that, for the firsttime in ISPS history, we are sponsoring a European Tour event this week, the ISPS Handa WalesOpen. Another sponsorship first for us this year was the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open, aninaugural LPGA event in Australia, tri-sanctioned with the LPGA, LET and Golf Australia. Another firstfor me and ISPS is that we have partnered with the PGA to launch a great new coaching initiative ingolf, the ISPS Handa PGA Academy Programme. This will see PGA coaches in the UK receive specialisttraining to administer coaching for blind and disabled golfers. I am particularly delighted about this

Page 15: Ladiesgolflifestyle Magazine Autumn 2012

LADIES GOLF LIFESTYLE 15

drive to support blind and disabled golfers and in 2012 we will see 1000 lessons delivered to blindand disabled golfers across the UK. The first of these lessons was delivered here, at Celtic Manor, back in April.

With regard to looking at any other events, we evaluate every event individually and as a wholeevery year and then take a view on any further opportunities that may exist to determine the futurelook of our golf sponsorship portfolio. Ultimately our aim as an organisation is to raise the profile ofblind and disabled golf worldwide with the long term mission being for golf become a Paralympicsport, and we will consider available events that are feasible, that will enhance that strategy andsupport that aim.

Why, in your view, should golf be in the Paralympics?

Through my work with the JBGA and the IBGA and other blind and disabled golfers andorganisations, I know that golf is as enjoyable and personally rewarding for the less able as it is forany golfer. Also, these golfers want to be able to compete and test themselves in exactly the sameway as golfers like you and I do. By extension the best of them want to compete on the biggeststage, and the Paralympics represents that biggest stage achievable for blind and disabled golf. Ifgolf can be an Olympic sport, then it should be a Paralympic sport. It also offers the single greatestopportunity to publicise to less able people all over the world that golf can be a game for them.

Are there enough disabled golfers to justify inclusion?

My view is that every blind and disabled person is a golfer that hasn’t had a chance or theopportunity to swing a club yet. They may not have even considered that golf is a sport they can playbecause they have no reference to it yet. The Paralympics offers the best opportunity to showcasethe sport to them and demonstrate to countries and governments that it is a great sport, and a greatsport for all and help grow the opportunity for the less able to play the game and who knows wherethe future talents and champions will come from?

Are the R&A behind your suggestion?

The R&A supported the Paralympic bid for Rio in 2016 and are represented on the board of theInternational Golf Federation (IGF) who are leading a review of that bid and developing any future bid.

What are the requirements that sports must meet to earn a place in the Paralympics?

In my view all sports that allow the less able to take part, play, compete and feel the personalbenefit and enjoyment that millions the world over get from sport, no matter what their age, background or circumstances, should have a place in the Paralympics. I passionately believe that golfis one of those sports and the more I see blind and disabled people playing golf and more of themplaying golf, it only strengthens my conviction.

How can the golfing and general public help support blind and disabled golf?

My foundation, the H and A Foundation, which is a registered UK charity, provides support for allthe work we do for blind and disabled golf, In the UK funds from this will be directed to the ISPSHanda PGA Academy Programme, which, as previously detailed, provides golf lessons to the blindand disabled from specially trained PGA golf coaches. We are currently running an auction here inthe UK and the proceeds of which will go directly into the ISPS Handa PGA Academy Programme toprovide more lessons. The auction can be viewed online at www.ispsgolf.com

The Gecko Pro Tour, created by Paul Netherton in July 2011, is committed to strengthening its unique position as the only satellite tour in Europe that offers a full schedule of tournaments for professional golfers (& Category 1 amateurs) during the winter months. From a base in Marbella/Southern Spain, events are hosted from Malaga to Cadiz on many of the finest golf courses in Andalucia and which attract some of the most talented players from across Europe who take advantage of the wonderful climate to hone their skills in a highly competitive environment.

Certainly, a major attraction for the players - in addition to the climate and the wonderful golf courses - is that South-ern Spain is an extremely low-cost region during the winter months when accommodation and car hire can be realisti-cally less than 50% of the comparable cost in the U.K! Additionally, when you take into account the numerous budget airlines that fly to Malaga, it is no surprise why so many aspiring professional golfers from Northern Europe opt to escape the cold for the sunshine & blue skies of Andalucia for their winter training.

Although The Gecko Pro Tour has only been in existence for one year, it has already received considerable media at-tention as well as a well-deserved reputation for professionalism that has enabled the company to secure the most prestigious golf courses in Southern Spain to host its tournaments e.g. Valderrama, Finca Cortesin, Arcos Gardens, Costa Ballena & La Reserva to name but a few. It is also worth noting that after launching an entirely new website in Q4 2011, The Gecko Pro Tour was already attracting more than 12,000 visits a month by the beginning of February 2012.

The Gecko Pro Tour holds 22-25 tournaments run over 2 or 3 days during the winter season. Although it is not manda-tory for professionals to become a member to enter tournaments, the significant benefits of Membership in 2012/13

Page 17: Ladiesgolflifestyle Magazine Autumn 2012

outweigh the annual fee of €200. These are:

· Unlimited use of the practice facilities at the David Leadbetter Academy at the La Cala Golf Resort, from September to the end of March 2013 which includes:

o Unlimited balls

o Unlimited use of the Par 3 course

o Major discount on lessons

· Automatic enrolment in The Gecko Pro Tour’s Order of Merit in which the top 4 ranked players receive their fees paid for Q School in 2013

· Reduced Tournament Entry Fee of €250

· Free personal Two4One Card that offers fantastic reductions on green fees, restaurants, bars, etc.

For the 2012/13 season, The Gecko Pro Tour has announced important enhancements to their prize fund. There is a guaranteed, minimum prize for the winner of each tournament which ranges from €2,000 to €5,000 based on the size of the field. In addition, 20% of the field receive prize money in 2-day tournaments which increases to 33% of the field for 3-day tournaments.

Full details are available on www.geckoprotour.com

At The Gecko Elite Golf Academy, we understand that good technical skills aligned with natural talent & ability alone is no guarantee of success in the highly competitive world of professional golf. In our opinion, additional ingredients that include passion, determination, hard work and a stubborn drive for excellence are also prerequisites to be a win-ner in golf as it is for anyone striving to reach the top in their chosen profession. The Gecko Elite Golf Academy aims to combine all these elements within a structured programme to provide players with a solid platform to attain their maximum potential in golf.

The Gecko Elite Golf Academy is to be launched on September 1, 2012 with a truly unique programme targeted at a limited number of young professionals as well as low handicap amateurs who intend to turn professional in the near future. Joining forces with the David Leadbetter Golf Academy, the programme is built around a series of 4-week mod-ules running from September to April each year and will be based at the renowned La Cala Golf Resort in Southern Spain which boasts 3 golf courses, an excellent Par 3 and superb practice facilities. An added benefit includes full use of the facilities at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy.

The programme is unique since The Gecko Elite Golf Academy will run alongside The Gecko Pro Tour Each player en-rolled in The Gecko Elite Golf Academy will automatically become a member of The Gecko Pro Tour and participate in at least 3 professional golf tournaments every 4 weeks...and the professionals are eligible to compete for the main Prize Fund each time!

A number of household names in golf will provide the specialist support to the players to ensure they receive the most professional yet personal preparation possible that will enable each individual to have the confidence to compete suc-cessfully at the highest level.

The Buckinghamshire Golf Course

Buckinghamshire Golf Course was created by the legendary John Jacobs O.B.E., former European Tour Player, and Ryder Cup Captain and in recent years a renowned course designer. His skilful use of the natural features and local topography, allied to the devoted skills of our greenkeeping staff who present the course to the highest standards year round have meant that our course has quickly become recognised as one of the finest inland courses in the British Isles. Buckinghamshire Golf Course has played host to the highlight of The Eu-ropean PGA Seniors Tour, The Senior Tournament of Champions from 1996 - 2000 and the Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf European Final in 1997. Closely associated with the Golf Club is resident Professional, former Euro-pean Tour and Ryder Cup Player John O‘Leary. The Rivers Misbourne and Colne ensure that water comes into play on seven of the first 12 holes. It is a tough test from the back tees but an enjoyable one. One of the strengths of the course is that the greens are 40 to 45 yards long, so simply altering the pin position can change the character of the holes completely. Golf Course Guide by ‘Rachel Drummond’

The course runs in two loops of nine, starting and finishing at the clubhouse. The fairways wander through three district areas incorporating woodland, lakes and rivers and undulating links style land providing a great variety of golfing terrain. The greens are constructed to USGA specification providing the ultimate in drainage and the smooth true putting surfaces are mown from high quality ‚Pennlinks‘ grass

34 LADIES GOLF LIFESTYLE

First HoleA long demanding opening hole, longer hitters may want to favour a fade off the tee to open up the approach. Most deceptive green on the course being 43 yards long, make sure you are smart with your club choice as you could be left with a lengthy putt!

Second Hole Straightaway par 5, keep right from the Tee to avoid Out of Bounds, an easy hole if you stay straight, birdies could be made.

Third Hole Be sensible here with your tee shot, longer hitters may find a driver isn’t the club as a stream at the front protects the green. Another long green being 47yards long, trust your yardage!

Fourth HoleTricky uphill dogleg left, choose a confident but not too aggressi-ve line off the tee, you don’t want to be blocked out by the trees on the left side of the fairway. A tough par four with a green 39 yards long, another deceptive hole, will be interesting to see how many people get there approaches to the hole!

Fifth HoleThis green is perched on top of a plateau and is often affected by the wind. Any shots by the ladies that finish centre of the green are in a good position, if the flag falls at the front of the green it will be important not to fly too far past the flag as the challenges really start as the green slopes back to front. Will be imperative to stay below the pin!

Sixth HoleA sharp dogleg right, this hole deserves respect as you can easily find one of the bunkers that run up both right and left of the fairway. The percentage play will be to hit a club that finds the furthest part of the fairway between the bunkers. More aggressive players may find that they can take off some of the right hand corner to leave a pitch shot, the pin position could either make this hole benign or very difficult.

Seventh HoleStraightforward par 3, hit the heart of the green, don’t be too aggressive with your approach if the flag sits on the left.

Eight HoleA tough hole that plays uphill and is often into a prevailing wind, a slight draw off the tee will help on this slight dog leg left. A demanding green to hit in two as the green is guarded by two large bunkers. Ninth Hole.A relatively simple par 5, a large oak tree however dictates both your driving position and length off the tee. Drives should either favour the left or right half of the fairway. Once the oak has been negotiated you have a simple approach onto a large green, to make birdies you will need to pepper the pin.

Tenth Hole

Favour the left side on Tee shot-avoiding the water, leave the shor-test lay-up possible to help a precise approach which is crucial if you want to get up and down for birdie. Some professionals may be able to reach this par 5 in two but if not look out for some tactical lay ups.

Eleventh HoleShort but sweet, is a generous fairway but avoid the left bunker. Green can be deceptive depending where the pin is, make sure you take enough club.

Twelfth Hole.Toughest Par 3 on the course with a relatively narrow green. If you have to miss the green, miss short and left, this will create the best chance for a par save. Centre of the green is a great shot on this hole as there are plenty of sucker pin positions that should not be attacked!

Thirteenth HoleFind the fairway off the tee with a slight draw on this dog leg left hole, longer hitters may be able to cut off the corner but this is not a hole to take too much off as the rough is ready to take shots that go too far left! This hole has a deep and wide two tiered green so club choice is important.

Fourteenth Hole A relatively easy drive which you should favour the left half of the fairway, this will make sure you stay out of the right hand bunkers. Longer hitters may be able to give this par 5 a shot in two, if not watch out for the sneaky bunker with your lay-up set back around 100yards short of the green.

Fifteenth HoleAvoid the gorse on the right and find the fairway a great line is over the middle bunker, a well positioned drive is crucial as this tricky green has three tiers and can bring tears if you find the wrong level.

Sixteenth HolePlay to your strengths and avoid the 2 brooks, the green once again is fairly wide and is 32yards in depth, however choosing the wrong club with your approach could leave yourself with a demanding putt on this subtly undulating green.

Seventeenth HoleA hole that can make a score, the ladies will have two options, longer hitting professionals will take on the water, a precise drive is needed, and any drives that leak to the right will find the water. Also a tough hole if you choose to lay up, a careful club selection is required which also needs to be accurate, the balls can be attracted to the right bunkers situated around 220 off the tee.

Eighteenth Hole.A tough finishing par 3, accuracy is required as anything right will find the water. The green is extremely challenging, being two tiered, a flag on both the front or back tier will favour anything central, players that find themselves going for a right pin are being very courageous!

Lambda & Omega Lda

Lambda & Omega Lda is a sister company of a European Group of Companies with 35 years of Shoe Manufacturing experience. Using the experience and know how we had in the shoe development we’ve decided to develop a classic golf shoe and to test the market reaction we’ve booked a booth in Golf Europe in Munich to first present our shoes. The first response and reaction from visitor was so great that at the site it was decided that this was something that we would focus and Lambda was created. While many big-name shoe brands outsource manufacture, we hand make all Lambda golf shoes in Portugal, enabling us to manage the entire production process and ensure the highest quality from start to finish, using only locally sourced, European environment friendly materials. Lambda & Omega Lda was established in 2008 with the purpose of creating a Global Golf apparel Brand, „Lambda“ and manage the innovative breakthrough technologies developed by the technical engineering team from one of our sister manufacturing compa-nies, these patented golf shoe manufacturing construction technologies enable Lambda to build a whole new type of classic golf shoe. Lambda is engineered, designed and managed with the focus, strategy and purpose of becoming a major brand in the Classic Golf Shoe apparel global market. In order to achieve the highest brand acknowledgement and recognition profile we require our products to be displayed only in the best golf accounts, as for example the famous Harrods in London or the St. Andrews Links, to whom we have been developing this past years their own shoe model, using the colors of their classic Tartan fabric in the shoes. Despite being a recent player in the golf industry and without the support of big marketing budgets of multinational companies, due to the quality and design of our products we managed to take our brand worldwide. Today it’s possible to find Lambda shoes, not only in most European countries as well as in distant markets such as the United Arab Emirates (Dubai), North America, South Africa, Japan, Taiwan, China, Kazakhstan and we will soon be launching Lambda in Australia. We have been presenting our shoes in various Golf shows and fairs across Europe and every year we have a boot at PGA Merchan-dise Show in Orlando, Florida that is the biggest golf fair in the world, having also exhibited in a golf fair in China and at this year’s Japan Golf Fair, where we always had a great reaction from visitors and we’ve managed to often catch the media attention due to our combination of our classic shoes with a more fashion look. One of our biggest success are the flag shoes, where the appeal to national pride and patriotism moves golfers in using their countries colors on the golf courses. Despite not having big budgets to sponsor famous golf players, there are already several professional players using Lambda shoes, like the Ladies European tour players Benedicte Toumpsin from Belgium or Elisabeth Esterl from Germany and the 3 time PGA tour winner Robert Gamez. I will send you pictures with them using our shoes later.

England’s Jodi Ewart is a talented Rookie with her card on both the LPGA and Ladies European Tour this season. We’re lucky to have her writing exclusively for Ladies Golf Lifestyle and in the second instalment of her first season on Tour she shares her insight into life on both sides of the pond and how she’s finding her form nicely competing against the world’s best female professionals.Interview by Carly Frost

“I can’t believe I’m over halfway through my Rookie season - how time flies! I’m loving life on Tour and relishing the opportunity to com-pete against the world’s best players. One of the most amazing weeks for me so far was playing in the LPGA Sybase Matchplay Champi-onship in New Jersey, USA. I knew I was one of the lowest ranked players in the field and would get a tough first round match so it was no surprise to find myself drawn against World Number 6 Suzann Pettersen. What an intimidating player and amazing competitor she is! I teed off as the underdog with nothing to lose, there was no pressure on me and I told myself just to play my own game. I think it was that positive attitude that really helped me to stay focused and to play one shot at a time and not get ahead of myself. Winning that match and then going onto defeat Sophie Gustafson, another great Solheim Cup player, in the next round before losing to the eventual winner really helped me realise that I am good enough to compete against the world’s best players. It gave me a big confidence boost which I’ve kept throughout the season. I set myself the goal of finishing inside the Top 50 on the money list, which was a pretty high expectation, but I’m on target to achieving that. I always knew that once I was given the opportunity I would play well.

They say that the first year as a professional is the hardest year but I’ve really settled into the lifestyle well. I think that my time playing college golf and travelling all over the USA and then turning professional and competing on the Futures Tour was a good stepping stone. Getting a win under my belt early on made me realise that I am good enough and it reinforced what I knew - this is what I want to do! There’s so little between all the golfers on Tour. players and I’m happy knowing that there is little technical work I need to do to improve. The difference is always in the short game, especially my putting, so I’ve been working hard on that and doing lots of drills. I’ve also been working with sports psychologist Karl Morris, he’s based in Manchester so we tend to do Skype sessions when I’m away, just confidence building before tournaments and preparation for play. Being productive with my practice is really important, so that I don’t practice too much and wear myself out before a tournament begins.

Off the course I enjoy taking time out and doing other things. It’s always good to give something back to the game and the sponsors and I realised just how lucky I am to be healthy and playing golf for a career when I visited the Somerset Medical Centre in Florida with two other golfing friends.

I’m also having fun planning my wedding and most importantly I’ve got my dress! It’s coming around so fast, which is exciting. Next time I speak to you there will only be a few months to go!”
