Look at me! Michael Dashow turned me into a fantastic cartoon! Now to just figure out a way to use this for my driver ’s license. I have been trying to get Michael’s art in our magazine for a while, and I am very happy to have finally tracked him down and get him to give us an interview.
I have been a fanatic for animation since I was a kid watching reruns of Buggs Bunny, Heckle and Jeckle, Jetsons, and the Flintstones on
my parents 1976 Zenith console. The picture was small, grainy, and filled with lines from the low-resolution screen. But I didn’t care it was cartoons at the turn of a dial. When the 80s came along, the golden age (for me) of Saturday morning cartoons began. He-Man, Captain Caveman, Smurfs, School House Rock, and so many others filled my weekends with adventure and sometimes I learned something... Conjunction Junction anyone? Ony a few years later came the irreverent and censor -busting Animaniacs with “Hellllooooo Nurse” and “baloney in our slacks”. I am still such a HUGE fan of animation and cartoons although my tastes have moved more towards Bob’s Burgers, Archer, Family Guy, and the occasional long-standing Southpark. But what Michael Dashow is creating a reality with his Steampunk characters and more.
In other news, after the June issue the Ladies of Steampunk Magazine will end publication. We are changing the name of the magazine to “The Hourglass” to be more inclusive of the community. Some of the changes came from reader suggestions such as “Do It Yourself ” building guides, costume suggestions, and the occasional review of your popular Steampunk characters in the community. There will always be Steampunk Ladies and Men in fabulous fashion, but we will also still be doing game reviews, talking to bands, and figuring out what cool and new Steampunk things you need to have.
