Irrigation and Sand

We are pleased to confirm the completion (except for some fine tuning) of the F9 irrigation replacement in

a timely manner, with limited disruption to play and within the budget of $600,000. Over the coming weeks

David and his team will continue tidy up work and re grassing with a hydroseeder David has built from items

lying about which will expedite the recovery of grass on the trenches.

You will have no doubt noticed the large quantity of sand left over from this project. Under our contract

with and advice from Advance Irrigation, the Club was required to have available sufficient suitable materi-

al for the base and over fill of all pipe trenches, hence the sand. It was necessary to comply with this to pre-

serve warranty expectations however as it turned out the ground conditions were such that only about 20%

of the sand was used.

Bob & Pam McRea had donated the sand for that project and have now confirmed the Club may retain

the sand at no cost. We really appreciate their understanding and thank them for their generous

contribution.

Earlier this year and after serious consideration, the Board resolved to convert to sand greens with the inten-

tion of starting in 2021 due to the higher cost of coring buying in the sand. As we now have sand on hand,

which will last for a number of years, the cost to start that conversion is no greater than coring with top soil.

Therefore the Board has decided to implement that process this year.

We will also use sand to complete the turf nursery, a further saving to the Club and in setting up the greens

on the short course.

David Smallbone

Chairman

Benefits of sand greens

Over the next 5-6 years the club will slowly transition from soil greens to sand.

The transition from soil to sand will be made through coring, topdressing, verticutting and hole cutting, es-

sentially any time a hole or cut is made in the green it would be filled with sand.

Year 1 will only see sand go on at coring and when the greens are vertidrained in autumn, in the following

years we will start regular topdressing along with the coring application

Pros of sand greens

More receptive greens

Smoother putting surface

Better surface drainage

Quicker recovery

Less time required to complete coring

Reduced hand watering

Improved turf health
