Director’s Note

Michael Govanceo and Wallis Annenberg Director

After years of planning and months of construction on campus—plus eleven days and nights of well-publicized transportation—Michael Heizer’s Levitated Mass is open to the public. The artist himself was at lacma for four weeks this spring, practically living on campus in his beautiful Airstream trailer with his wife and collaborator, Mary, and their border collie, Tomato Rose. He was here to oversee the placement of the megalith atop the 456-foot-long slot outside of the Resnick Pavilion. I am incredibly happy to see all the work on this artwork completed—not only by the artist but also by the engineers, crews, and lacma staff who have put in so much time and effort. I am especially pleased to have the artwork dedicated by lacma to its former chair of the board of trustees, the late Nancy Daly.

Michael Heizer is one of the most influential artists of the last half century, even if many of his seminal artworks can’t possibly be displayed inside of an art museum. To give some context to his work, opening in conjunction with Levitated Mass is Michael Heizer: Actual Size, two large-scale installations in the Resnick Pavilion and bcam—a monumen-tal photograph projection whose subject is Heizer’s 1969 artwork Munich Depression, as well as massive photographs of rocks in their natural environment.

Actual Size is one more example of the growing presence of photography at lacma. Britt Salvesen, head of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department, is co-curator, with Stephanie Barron, of Sharon Lockhart | Noa Eshkol, as well as curator of the soon-to-open The Sun and Other Stars: Katy Grannan and Charlie White. That is only a slice of the activity happening within our photography department in 2012. This year the museum also mounted exhibitions for Robert Adams and Daido Moriyama; in the fall, you’ll also get your first taste of the major Robert Mapplethorpe collection lacma jointly acquired last year with the Getty. For those with a passion for photography, there is always something to see here.

Summer is in full swing at lacma. I encourage you to bring your family soon to enjoy this beautiful museum in a park, whether you experience Levitated Mass, enjoy our many summer concert series—Jazz at lacma, Latin Sounds, and the new hip hop series Through the Mic—or step inside our galleries to see the incredible expressions of centuries past.

Collectors Committee Makes Seven Acquisitions

The annual Collectors Committee Weekend took place on April 20–21 and resulted in $2.8 million raised for seven acquisitions. Using a pool of funds contributed by members, the Collectors Committee voted to acquire Robert Rauschenberg’s sixty-foot-long print Currents (1970); a Louis Sullivan–designed elevator surround from the Chicago Stock Exchange Building; a twelfth-century Japanese Buddhist sculpture, Fudo Myoo: The Indomitable Foe of Evil; Albrecht Dürer’s Master Engraving Saint Jerome in His Study; and two paintings by the eighteenth-century New Spanish artist Nicolás Enríquez. lacma trustee Jamie McCourt also purchased Shirin Neshat’s Speechless for the museum, while Bruce Conner’s three-channel video Three Screen Ray was purchased with funds

provided by Brad and Colleen Bell, Victoria Jackson and Bill Guthy, Jane and Marc Nathanson, and Steve Tisch.

Piano, Pali to Design Film Museum

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has named Renzo Piano and Zoltan Pali as architects for their proposed film museum, to be located on lacma’s campus in the former May Company building. Piano was also the architect for lacma’s recent expansion which included bcam, the Resnick Pavilion, and Ray’s and Stark Bar. Those additions were recently honored by the Los Angeles Business Council with the annual Los Angeles Architecture Award grand prize. Pali, of the Los Angeles–based firm Studio Pali Fekete Architects, had previously collaborated with lacma on plans to redesign the very same building prior lacma’s agreement with ampas to explore the creation of a film museum at Wilshire and Fairfax.

Latin American Exhibitions to Travel

Two major exhibitions organized by lacma’s Latin American art curators are opening at additional venues this month. Contested Visions in the Spanish Colonial World, previously on view at lacma last fall, opens at the Museo Nacional de Historia del Castillo de Chapultepec on July 12. Children of the Plumed Serpent: The Legacy of Quetzalcoatl in Ancient Mexico, which closes at lacma on July 1, heads to the Dallas Art Museum for its next run, July 29–November 25.

aamc Honors lacma Publications

The Association of Art Museum Curators (aamc) recently announced its annual Awards for Excellence in 2011, and two lacma exhibitions were honored. Gifts of the Sultan: The Arts of Giving at the Islamic Courts, curated by Linda Komaroff, received top honors for Outstanding Exhibition Catalogue. Runner-up in the same category was Contested Visions in the Spanish Colonial World, curated by Ilona Katzew. Contested Visions received additional recognition as one of the top five Outstanding Thematic Exhibitions.

New Coffee and Shake Bar

Opening in late July at lacma is a new coffee and shake bar, C+M (Coffee & Milk). Managed by Patina Restaurant Group, which also runs Ray’s and Stark Bar, C+M features artisan pastries and fair-trade coffee and espresso drinks ground to order. The menu also includes organic hand-shaken milkshakes and sorbet sandwiched between freshly baked cookies. C+M is located on the Los Angeles Times Central Court, in close proximity to the Boone Children’s Gallery, Bing Theater, and many permanent collection galleries.

Visit lacma.org for opening updates.

Museum Stores Get a Makeover

Located near the Chinese and Korean art galleries and the Boone Children’s Gallery in the Hammer Building, the lacma store has recently relaunched with a new look and a thoughtfully curated selection of items, many inspired by works in lacma’s collections and exhibitions, as well as a newsstand featuring art publications from around the world. Additionally, the Art Catalogues store in the Ahmanson Building has also been renovated to include a new glass wall that opens into the David Bohnett Foundation Atrium, providing easier access to the popular special events in that space.

kjazz Broadcasts Jazz at lacma

Airing every Sunday at 7–9 pm, KJazz Radio 88.1 fmnow broadcasts the Jazz at lacma concert series. The taped broadcasts highlight recent performances at the museum’s popular free Friday night summer concerts, adding interview segments with the musicians. For more information on upcoming concerts, turn to page 7. The Jazz at lacma broadcast series is supported by KJazz Radio 88.1 fm and made possible through the support of the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.

July 22–October 14, 2012 | BCAMMember Preview Days July 19–21The Sun and Other Stars: Katy Grannan and Charlie White brings together two photographers whose bodies of work, together, map the fragility and resilience of individuality in contempo-rary Western culture. Grannan’s unflinching portraits along sun-struck boulevards elevate her subjects from obscurity, while White’s series of blonde teen girls frames the popular and tyrannical appetite for celebrity with an unsentimental lens. Through nearly seventy-five photos, as well as a three-channel video installation by Grannan and White’s video animation, this exhibition examines the complexity of the human condition and the effects of desire and aspiration.

This exhibition was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and was made possible in part by LACMA’s Photographic Arts Council.

Levitated Mass by Michael Heizer is composed of a 456-foot-long slot constructed on lacma’s campus, over which is placed a 340-ton granite megalith. Heizer conceived of the artwork in 1969 but discovered an appropriate boulder only decades later in Riverside County, California. Earlier this year, all of Los Angeles watched as the boulder was transported 105 miles from its quarry to lacma. Since the boulder’s arrival, Heizer has overseen the creation of this incredible artwork, now open to the public. Taken whole, Levitated Mass speaks to the expanse of art history—from ancient traditions of creating artworks from megalithic stone to modern forms of abstract geometries and cutting-edge feats of engineering. Also on view is Michael Heizer: Actual Size—large-scale photographic works by the artist. In the Resnick Pavilion, and shown for the first time in more than three decades, Actual Size: Munich Rotary (1971) uses six custom film projectors to exhibit six spliced images at the original actual size of the artist’s 1969 negative sculpture, Munich Depression, built in the outskirts of Munich, Germany—a depression measuring one hundred feet in diameter and sixteen feet deep that displaced 1,000 tons of rock and earth. Installed in bcam is a series of fifteen individual photographic prints from 1970 of actual size monolithic rocks. Michael Heizer: Actual Size is on view through September 9.

Levitated Mass was made possible by gifts to Transformation: The LACMA Campaign from Jane and Terry Semel, Bobby Kotick, Carole Bayer Sager and Bob Daly, Beth and Joshua Friedman, Steve Tisch Family Foundation, Elaine Wynn, Linda, Bobby, and Brian Daly, Richard Merkin, MD, and the Mohn Family Foundation, and is dedicated by lacma to the memory of Nancy Daly.

FILM INDEPENDENT AT LACMA. . . Is James Bond: Celebrating 50 Years of a Film Legend In conjunction with . . . Is James Bond, Film Independent at lacma celebrates fifty years of the legendary secret agent by screening five iconic Bond films in July— spanning from the original 007, Sean Connery, to George Lazenby’s brief turn. Seven more Bond films, starring Pierce Brosnan, Timothy Dalton, and Daniel Craig, will screen in September.

French Film FridaysFridays in July | See calendar for showtimesFilm Independent at lacma celebrates France’s rich cinematic history throughout July by showcasing films both classic and rare every Friday.

FILM

. . . Is James BondThrough September 9 | Art of the Americas BuildingFrom Soviet agents to Caribbean drug lords, Kissy Suzuki to Octopussy, Sean Connery to Daniel Craig— in the fifty years since the first James Bond film, villains, Bond girls, and the actors who have played 007 have changed to reflect a society in flux. Over the course of twenty-two films, one element has remained constant: Maurice Binder’s unmistakable opening credit sequences. Organized with Loyola Marymount Univer-sity’s School of Film and Television, . . . Is James Bond is an installation of all twenty-two opening sequences, which explores them as unique and groundbreaking cinema—filmmaking that is as daring as 007 himself.

This exhibition was co-organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and Television. The organizers are grateful for the special collaboration of Danjaq LLC and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios.

Ai Weiwei: Never SorryJuly 16 | 7:30 pm Ai Weiwei is China’s most celebrated contemporary artist and its most outspoken domestic critic. First-time director Alison Klayman gained unprecedented access to the charismatic artist, with cameras rolling as govern-ment authorities shut down the artist’s blog, beat him up, bulldozed his studio, and held him in secret deten-tion. This compelling documentary is the inside story of a passionate dissident for the digital age who blurs the boundaries of art and politics.

MargaretJuly 17 | 7:30 pm Anna Paquin stars as a teenager who witnesses—and maybe causes—the death of a pedestrian hit by a bus on a busy Manhattan intersection in Kenneth Lonergan’s long-awaited follow up to his Academy Award–nominated debut, You Can Count on Me.Extended director’s cut | In person: writer/director Kenneth Lonergan

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry

Do you see the waves and clouds that surround the dragon?

In ancient China, only the imperial family was allowed to wear clothing decorated with dragons.

A rank badge is similar to a patch that scouts earn and wear.

A Chinese prince most likely wore this rank badge.

Andell Family Sundays celebrates Dragon Days every Sunday in August. Join us!
