NOW ACCEPTING STUDENTS FOR NEW CERTIFICATE IN SUSTAINABLE LEADERSHIP Lackawanna College Environmental Education Center News & Events Spring & Summer 2019 Are you looking to learn skills to become a beer leader? Have you ever thought about incorporang sustainability into your daily life, career or business? Are you ready to change direcon? The 16-credit Cerficate in Sustainable Leadership provides the foundaon needed to become a sustainability professional in under nine months! Students will learn how to use systems thinking and problem-solving skills to gain a deeper understanding of the complexity of sustainability, which encompasses economic, social and environmental issues. The online distance-learning format is flexible and affordable, accommodang anyone interested in learning about sustainability. Students will take one class at a me, which will help working professionals balance their school, work and personal responsibilies along with providing me to focus on each course. The program offers an ideal layout for busy working professionals, high school graduates or anyone who is looking to add a differenang credenal to their resume. The curriculum is well suited for almost any industry, profession and employment level, including but not limited to: corporate and small business, travel, hospitality, transportaon, educaon, healthcare, science and the food industry. Students will take five three-credit courses and a one-credit capstone course. Classes are as follows: Principles of Sustainability, Resource Economics, Leadership for Sustainability, Framework for Sustainable Business, Sustainable Project Proposal and Sustainable Leadership Capstone. While the program develops leadership and management skills through exploring issues involving sustainability, this is an excellent program for anyone interested in becoming an efficient leader by encouraging a producve workforce and reducing expenditure costs. Are you looking to learn skills to become a better leader? Have you ever thought about incorporating sustainability into your daily life, career or business? Are you ready to change direction?

The 16-credit Certificate in Sustainable Leadership provides the foundation needed to become a sustainability professional in under nine months! March 27 Wednesday 5:30 p.m.

Hug a Tree and Survive with Mike Leggiero Join Sandcut Outdoors for a potentially life-saving program designed by professional search and rescue workers following the tragic death of a nine-year-old boy who became lost in the woods. This program teaches children how to keep from getting lost, what to do if they become lost, how to stay warm and dry and how they can help search and rescue personnel find them. This class is appropriate for children ages 5-12 and their guardians.

April 10 Wednesday 5:30 p.m.

The World of Timber Rattlesnakes! with Dr. Christopher Howey, University of Scranton Get up-close to a Timber Rattlesnake, one of Pennsylvania’s three venomous snakes! Join biologist, Dr. Christopher Howey to learn the history, characteristics, adaptations, habits, current research and conservation strategies of this widely misunderstood reptile. By the end of this talk, you will know how to correctly identify this wonderful animal and understand why we need them within the world around us.

May 4 Saturday 1:00 p.m.

Earthing & Meditation Hike with LCEEC Educator, Casie Berkhouse Ground yourself with Casie Berkhouse as she guides you to connect with Mother Earth through Earthing and meditation. This program will start as a hike and concludes with LCEEC’s Earthing Circle unveiling and a short lead meditation. Please be prepared to be outdoors with sturdy shoes. All experiences levels welcome, especially beginners. Geared for the whole family.

May 8 Wednesday 5:30 p.m.

Spring Mushroom Walk with Nathaniel Whitmore Back by popular demand! Join herbalist Nathaniel Whitmore in search of wild spring mushrooms along the trails of LCEEC. This class will discuss proper identification of spring mushrooms, including the celebrated morel mushroom, along with the best habitat to find them. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. For ages 16 and above. $10 per person.

May 22 Wednesday 5:30 p.m.

Vegetable Gardening 101 with Richie Mitchell from Bear Creek Organics Tour LCEEC’s new Learning Garden with garden designer Richie Mitchell from Bear Creek Organics. Participants will learn garden site selection, soil preparation, the basics of starting and planting seeds, companion plating, healthy soil maintenance and alternative pest management. The program will conclude with planting seedlings in the new Learning Garden. Bear Creek Organics will have a variety of heirloom plants available for purchase after the program. This program is FREE and open to all ages.

Early Explorers Early Explorers is a program series for children ages 3-6 and a guardian that offers discovery-based learning about the natural world through stories, art and outdoor explorations. The cost is $40 for the six class series. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Classes run every other Monday. Classes will be indoors and outdoors, please dress for the weather.

The Tiny Seed: March 25, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Children will discover how seeds travel and what they need to grow. Each child will plant a seed to take home. Spring Winds: April 8, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Children will discover the ways people, plants and animals use wind to survive. Children will make a wind painting. Earth Day Celebration: April 22, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Celebrate Earth Day with LCEEC. Children will explore their five senses on a magical sensory hike along the trails.

Forest Floor: May 6, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Using bug boxes, children will explore the forest floor to find critters under logs, stones and leaf litter. Garden Fun: May 20, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Children will help plant vegetable seedlings in LCEEC’s Learning Garden while learning where their food comes from. Beautiful Butterflies: June 3, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Children will learn about the life cycle of butterflies and then hike to the field to search for these fascinating creatures.

School field trip registration is open! Programs combine hands-on activities with an exploratory walk on LCEEC’s 211-acre property that meets many of the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology and Science and Technology.

Lackawanna College recognized its second year of graduates from the Conservation

and Natural Resource (CNR) certificate program on December 7, 2018. The CNR

program is a 15-week fall semester completed at LCEEC that focuses on the

conservation and interpretation of our natural environment through hands-on

experiences. The program includes coursework in wildlife management, freshwater

ecosystems and more. The CNR certificate program will prepare students for entry-

level park/forest ranger and interpreter positions in state, county and municipal park

systems. Applications are being accepted for future CNR programs scheduled to begin
