Volume XXXII Number 2 of L O V E
About three weeks ago, the head preschool teacher and a
preschool student came into the church office. The student
had drawn a picture for me and put it on a square piece of
cardboard. You can see what the picture looks like above.
I asked the student about the picture, and she told me that
it was a picture of Jesus and the cross. I thanked the
student for drawing the picture for me and told her that I
would put it up on my door. If you’re in the office, you
can see it posted on my door. It looks very nice!
The next day, when I saw the student’s grandmother, I
asked her if she could give me some background on the
picture. She said that cardboard was leftover from
something (she couldn’t remember what) and that it was
her granddaughter’s idea to draw what she did and give it
to me.
I’ve been thinking about this picture ever since the student
brought it to me. Can you see Jesus with His longer hair
and beard? Can you see the cross next to Him?
This simple picture of Jesus and His cross are a good
representation of the wonderful things that are happening
in our preschool and daycare missions. Trinity Lutheran
Preschool started in January of 1982. Kids of HIS
Kingdom Daycare started in August of 2012.
Over the years, as teachers and pastors have taught the
children in their daily activities and in chapel, the students
have heard the good news about Jesus as their loving
Savior—that He died on the cross for them and rose again
from the dead for them to rescue them and all people from
sin, from death, and from the power of the devil. John
3:16-17, ESV: “For God so loved the world, that he gave
his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not
perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son
into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the
world might be saved through him.”
If last year is like this year, then about half of our students
and their families in both missions have church homes in
the area. The others do not. Whether it is here locally or
globally in places like Honduras, we are thankful for the
privilege that our living Savior, Jesus, has given us to
participate in that work of making “disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 25:19) With God’s word
that we plant among people in different settings by
ourselves and with the help of others, the Holy Spirit
works to bring more people to repentance and faith in
Jesus as their loving and living Savior.
Thanks for your support of missions with your time,
abilities and finances over the years, so that others can hear
the good news about Jesus as their loving Savior. As I said
in the last newsletter, 2017 is the 500th anniversary of the
reformation of the church. Even as we remember and
celebrate this important milestone, I pray that you and I
will continue support the mission work that we’re doing
together as a congregation. I pray also that you and I will
grow in being personally involved in telling others the
good news about how God saves us—by grace alone
through faith alone in Jesus Christ. That’s what God
tells us so clearly in His Holy Word – the Bible. We do so
not for our own glory, but for the sake of people like that
preschool student who drew the picture of Jesus and His
cross for me—so that they will hear about Him, believe in
Him as Savior, join us in following Him in faith as Savior
always, and enjoy life together with our living Lord
forever in His heavenly home. Praise God from Whom all
blessings flow!
God’s continued blessings to you and your families!
In Christ,
Pastor Jon Rathjen
Matthew 28:19-20 Go therefore and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I
have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to
the end of the age.”

Christus Chorus
The Christus Chorus of Concordia University,
St. Paul, Minnesota, will participate musically in
the worship service at St. Paul’s Lutheran (6
Miles North) Falls City on Maundy Thursday,
April 13th
at 7:30 pm. The 24-voice choir, under
the direction of Dr. David L. Mennicke, will
perform a variety of music at appropriate times
throughout the worship service. The choir is
grateful for the opportunity to perform some of
the great music of the Church and to witness
through music as an expression of faith. A
freewill offering will be taken to support the
choir’s music ministry.
The Christus Chorus is the concert choir of
Concordia University, St. Paul, Minnesota. The
group has existed as a mixed auditioned choir
since the 1950’s. Past directors have included
Harold Otte, Paul Manz, Robert Dosien, David
Krause, and Robert Leininger. David Mennicke
has directed the choir since 1989. The Christus
Chorus is auditioned from the 1,500 member
traditional program student body of Concordia
University. Christus Chorus members represent
many of the forty-five majors offered at
Concordia. The choir participates in Concordia’s
annual Christmas Concerts and sings regularly
for the campus’s morning chapel services. Each
year the Christus Chorus holds a concert tour
(usually during Holy Week) and records their
tour program. Every four years, the choir has an
international tour; past itineraries have been to
Europe (France, Italy, England, Germany,
Poland, Czech Republic, and Greece), Africa
(Ghana in 2008) and Asia (South Korea in
2012).

called them to him, saying, “Let the children
come to me, and do not hinder them, for to
such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say
to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom
of God like a child shall not enter it.”
Luke 18:15–17

Please note: This information is a follow-up from the February – March Labors of Love newsletter. I told
you that we would give some information about the meaning of the different parts of Luther’s Seal. The
information below is from a certificate originally produced by Lutheran Brotherhood (one of the
organizations that became Thrivent) that we have given to confirmands over the years.
Martin Luther’s Seal
While a professor of Wittenberg, Luther devised this seal which he declared was meant to be “expressive
of his theology.” This explanation is the gist of a letter written to his friend, Herr Spengler, town clerk of
Nuremberg.
The first thing expressed in my seal is a cross, black, within the heart, to put me in mind that faith in Christ crucified saves us. ‘For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness.’ Now, although the cross is black, mortified, and intended to cause pain, yet it does not change the colour of the heart, does not destroy nature—i.e., does not kill, but keeps alive. ‘For the just shall live by faith,’ –by faith in the Saviour. But this heart is fixed upon the centre of a white rose, to show that faith causes joy consolation and peace. The rose is white, not red, because white is the ideal colour of all angels and blessed spirits. This rose, moreover, is fixed in a sky—coloured ground, to denote that such joy of faith in the spirit is but an earnest and beginning of heavenly joy to come, as anticipated and held by hope, though not yet revealed. And around this groundbase is a golden ring, to signify that such bliss in heaven is endless, and more precious than all joys and treasures, since gold is the best and most precious metal. Christ, our dear Lord, He will give grace unto eternal life.
PRAISE GOD FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW!
Romans 3:28 (ESV) For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.
Galatians 2:20–21 (ESV) I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in
me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for
me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if justification were through the law, then Christ died for no
purpose.
