STARS MSc Project 2

Background Methodology for MCNP Criticality Safety Evaluations with Nuclear Data Uncertainty Quantification (NUSS)

developed at PSI

Validation based on fresh fuel critical experiments only – Applicability for burned fuel need to be proven

Also, account of correlations between experiments could potentially reduce calculated unceratinties

Master Project Review criticality benchmarks suitable for transposition to validation of CSE with Burnup Credit (BUC)

Development of MCNP models and analyses with NUSS using latest libraries

Derive correlations between validation benchmarks and selected application case (e.g. disposal canister)

Evaluate effect of correlations on CSE unceratinties and upper sub-criticality limits

Criticality Safety for Spent Fuel Geological Disposal

MELCOR is an integral computer code developed by the Sandia National Laboratories for

modeling severe accidents in nuclear power plants. Since the code version 2.1, also accident scenarios in High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors (HTGRs)

can be considered.

Master Project Improvement of the existing MELCOR input deck of the HTR-PM pebble bed reactor

Investigation on the capabilities to model fission product release and transport in HTR-PM in normal

operation and in accident conditions using the MELCOR core.

Contact: Jarmo ( [email protected] )

Accident Analysis of High Temperature Reactors Estimation with MELCOR of the source term from different severe accident sequences

Background Aerosol Release during Severe Accident in Nuclear Power Plants

Current Techniques and Technology for Measuring Aerosol Characteristics limited

Master Project Develop an optical method based on light attenuation

Design and conduct experiments in a smaller scale facility using LINX infrastructure, where analytical

models from literature can be used to analyze the experiments, e.g. particle settling in a quiescent fluid.

Comparison against established techniques such as Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA) or Shadowgraphy

Expected outcome: A scalable aerosol measurement method

Development of Optical Sensor for Aerosol Measurements
