ABunsen Burners

Natural gas is almost entirely methane. Burners are therefore designed for the high calorific value

(approximately 38 MJm-3) of this gas. The delivery pressure of natural gas is approximately 2 x 103 Pa (Nmv). Bottled gases liquify at a fairly low temperature and can be easily stored and transported in steel cylinders. The principal gases used are propane (C3 H8) and butane (C4 H10).

The gas cylinders must always be used with a suitable pressure reducing valve and regulator which is available from the suppliers of the gas. The calorific value of propane is 93.2 MJm-3 and its normal delivery pressure is 3500 Pa (Nm-2).

Butane has a calorific value of 119.3MJm-3 and has a delivery pressure of about 2750 Pa (Nm-2).

The Natural Gas Bunsen Burner burns approximately 108 litres per hour of natural gas.

The Bottled Gas Bunsen Burner burns approximately 144 litres per hour of bottled gas.

Security At Philip Harris we recognise that chemicals represent a major hazard for schools and act responsibly to reduce the risk they represent.

We only use UN approved packaging, with the appropriate hazard warnings and delivery note clearly visible on the outside. So when chemicals arrive at a school it is clear what they are, helping staff to deal with them promptly and safely.

Whenever you order a chemical for the first time or when safety information changes we place a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) in with the order so that the department can maintain a proper record of what to do in case of an accident or spillage. We recommend that schools file these sheets in an area easily accessible by all staff in case of an emergency.

Purity and MolaritySome chemicals, irrespective of grade (LR, HR, AR), contain additives such as an anti-caking agent. This has no appreciable effect on the chemical behaviour of the substance, but does affect the amount that must be weighed out to achieve solutions of accurate molarity. E.g. copper sulfate-5-water is 98% pure, so a 1M solution requires 249.68 ÷ 0.98 = 254.78g to be dissolved in 1 litre. Allow to settle or filter to remove any insoluble component.

Students are asked to investigate the six boxes and form hypotheses about their contents. Not knowing the “right answer” makes this rather like many science investigations. Observations are made, evidence is gathered, suggestions are made, discussion leads to evaluation of a range of hypotheses, and a conclusion is reached. A set of six metal boxes, whose contents are secret and not revealed! They cannot be opened. The boxes have been designed for secondary schools use and the accompanying notes are suitable for secondary use.
