The purpose is to: 1) practice reading and comprehension en español, 2) and, learn about a cultural icon of one of the many Spanish--speaking countries. The article will be posted on edline under “Summer Reading Assignment for 8th Grade Spanish.” Instructions: Read the English introduction of “El Coquí” from the edline posting or your online textbook, ¡Exprésate! p. 230. Next, read the three paragraph article that follows and continues through textbook p. 231. On loose leaf paper with proper heading, in neatest handwriting (or word processed), provide a complete translation in your own words of the first Spanish paragraph. Also include your answers in complete sentences to the six questions at the end of the article on p. 231. Pay attention to the footnotes (they offer translations). Remember that on-line translators cannot take into account the context of a story and can lead to incorrect conclusions. I look forward to discussing what you learned upon our return in the fall. In the meantime, continue to look for Spanish around you. Consider watching a cartoon video or two en español (from the library); picking up El Sentinel on Saturdays or any of the other local Spanish newspaper (most are inexpensive or free); or catching the latest in sports on ESPN en español on the internet. ¡Disfruta (enjoy) tu verano y tu familia!
