La Salle School February2020
Dear Parents and Students
We hope that everyone has had a positive start to 2020. Our student’s enthusiasm
has been very evident upon their return to school, as they seize the opportunities to
reconnect with friends and classmates.
We would like to acknowledge that we are approaching an important crossroad
for our grade 8 students, as they prepare for a transition into the next stage of
their education. Although the end of their time at La Salle School remains several
months away, the high school transition/registration process begins. In the La Salle
catchment area, the high school within the Seine River School Division is Collège St.
Norbert Collegiate (CSNC). All of our grade 8 students had the opportunity to ex-
perience a woodworking class, building themselves a Gumball Machine over the
high school exam week on January 29th. CSNC will also be having an Open House
on Tuesday, February 25th and everyone is encouraged to visit the high school and
familiarize themselves with the facility and the staff.
Another big transition within the school system is the start of Kindergarten. The staff
at La Salle School hosted an information evening for parents on Wednesday, Jan
22nd. Parents had an opportunity to meet the school team, visit the classrooms and
tour the school. Kindergarten registration packages were to be completed and re-
turned to the school by Friday January 31st. An important date for all kindergarten
parents to schedule into your calendar is our “Welcome to Kindergarten Day”,
which will take place on Wednesday May 6th. More information will follow regard-
ing a schedule for that day.
We would also like to showcase that February is “I Love to Read Month” and we
would encourage you all to take any opportunity to read with and to your chil-
dren. Your support in modeling the importance that literacy plays in our daily
lives is greatly appreciated.

Ski & Snowboarding Outing
The La Salle School again this year is offering the students of grade seven and eight a one-day ski and snowboard outing to Holiday Mountain on Friday Feb-ruary 28, 2020. This outing provides an excellent opportunity for these students to experience the life-long sport of skiing and snowboarding. Parents are en-couraged to talk to their son/daughter about the use common sense on that day to help ensure that it is enjoyable by all the participants. Please review with your son/daughter all of the information in the booklet that was sent home as we get closer to our departure date. There will be a lunch hour information meeting in the gymnasium on Friday February 21st, 2020 that all participating students must attend. The bus will leave at 7:00 a.m. SHARP and will return to the bus loop at exactly 5:45 p.m. Please make the necessary arrangement to have your son/daughter dropped-off and picked-up ON TIME.
Intramurals
The early years intramural program is up and running and has been very well attended. It provides an excellent opportunity for our students to get physically active and to socialize with students from different classes. The intramural pro-gram also provides an excellent leadership opportunity for our grade 5 & 6 students who are in-charge of setting up and implementing the various different weekly activities.
Grade 6 Friendship Basketball Tournament
The Grade 6 Friendship Basketball Tournament was on Thursday January 30, 2020. The two girls’ teams coached by our grade 8 girls – Alyssa, Ashlyn, Avery, Julia, Madison & Shayanna played at St. Adolphe. While our two boys’ teams – coach by our grade 8 boys – Ethan, Ryan, Cameron & Marek played at LBC. All the players learned about the game of basketball and as the day pro-gressed so did their skills. A special thank you to our coaches and teacher su-pervisors – Ms. Wiens & Mr. Friesen.

Roots of Empathy
We continue to enjoy our visit with Calla each month. She is such a happy baby it makes it fun for us to interact
with her on the blanket. Calla is now 6 months old, she is sitting in the tripod position on her own, Her grip is get-
ting stronger when she holds toys or our fingers. She has started swimming with her mom once a week because
she loves water. We look forward to our February visit.

PALS
We took a break for January and will start up again in February. We plan organized activities for the K-
Grade 4 students. PALS meets at the ball diamond at morning recesses. We will be going around to classes to
remind them to join us in the fun. Encourage your child to come and have some fun while making new friends.
Speak Up
Speak Up is a Mental Health Awareness Program. The grade 7/8 classes received this program in January to
learn more around our own Mental Health normal, mental illness, first person language and resources for them
to access if needed. Another part of the program is to help youth understand more around mental health and
how to support people they know who may be struggling and when they need to encourage getting more help.
Changing the stigma around Mental Health is so important. It may be difficult but having open and honest con-
versations with youth will help them feel supported, and hopefully they will talk to someone when they need that
support. Helping youth and adults realize that they do not need to work through challenges and struggles on
their own is a step in the right direction.
Pink T-Shirt Day
Pink T-shirt Day is on Wednesday, Feb 26. We encourage all students and staff to wear pink to show they sup-
port the effort to stop bullying. Our Beyond the Hurt group will be doing activities or reading stories in some
classes throughout the day to generate conversations and remind students what to do. Please talk at home with
your child about what to do if they are being bullied or someone they know is:
Tell the person who is bullying to stop
Power in numbers, play or hang out in groups
Talk to an adult so they can help
I am always available to support students and families experiencing
conflict or bullying.

Leadership Report
By Ashlyn Temple and Alyssa Bjarnarson
The leadership team is very happy to announce that the bake sale, Koats
for Kids, and Christmas Cheer Board Hampers were all a huge success.
We exceeded our goal of twenty coats when collecting for the Koats for
Kids program. Thanks to your donations, more children will have warm
outerwear for this cold winter.
In addition, we raised a total of $507.95 from the Winter Festival bake
sale and cash donations. With this money, we selected gift items so that
each child in the hamper families would have a special gift to enjoy.
Every one of the gifts we bought were neatly wrapped so that the chil-
dren could experience the joy of opening them over the holiday season.
Thanks to you, we provided four families with food for the holidays. We
received so many wonderful donations that we gave each family lots of
extra food and were still able to donate the rest to Winnipeg Harvest.
When members of the leadership team delivered the hampers, each
family expressed how grateful they were and the leadership team got to
see first-hand what positive impact they and the La Salle community were
able to have on someone’s holiday experience. Thank you for helping us
make a difference in the lives of people from our home province!

they must sign out at the office and check back in at the office before afternoon classes begin.
