OF KINGS AND KINGSHIP Americans have an uncomfortable relationship with kings. The American Revolution was fought for independ-ence from King George, after all. Nonetheless, today every Catholic church around the world celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Today’s feast invites us to look beyond our national loyalties and rejoice in our primary identity. We are children of God in Je-sus, Christ the King. Our readings help us consider what it’s like to belong to God’s kingdom. The book of Samuel captures the deep longing of the Israel-ites for a king to shepherd them. Saint Paul reminds the Colossians that we belong to the kingdom of Christ, whose power he praises in a beautiful hymn. Finally, Luke’s Gospel calls to mind the kind of king Jesus chooses to be—a suffering servant, a man for others. By sacrificing his life for us, Jesus throws open the gates of Paradise. Sin embargo, hoy cada iglesia católica alrededor del mundo celebra la Solemnidad del Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Rey del Universo. La celebración de hoy de la Iglesia nos invita a ver más allá de nuestras lealtades nacionales y regocijar-nos en nuestra primera identidad. Somos hijos de Dios en Jesús, Cristo el Rey. Nuestras lecturas nos ayudan a considerar cómo pertenecer al Reino de Dios. El libro de Samuel captura el profundo anhe-lo de los israelitas por un rey que los pastoree. San Pablo recuerda a los colosenses que pertenecemos al reino de Cristo, cuyo poder alaba en un hermoso himno. Active listening lets the speaker know that you have heard, unders-tood, and valued what he or she said. Often, children don’t feel this way, but with a few easy tactics, you can change that, building a relationship of trust and respect. As an active listener, be sure to make eye contact while the child is speaking. Ask follow-up questions and check in to make sure you both understand what’s being said. Avoid “yes or no” questions and instead ask open-ended questions that will keep the conversation going. Come and Celebrate Celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception as a parish on Sunday, December 8. The celebration

will begin with a rosary procession at 4 p.m., followed by a potluck featuring pozole and a

mariachi band. Families are encouraged to bring dishes according to the first letter of their last name: Letters A-H: desser t, I-P: salad, Q-Z: a main dish. You are also encouraged to bring a toy to donate to the St. Vincent de Paul HOPE Shop, and visit the beautiful Christmas Village in the school garden.

The parish Respect Life Group is again sponsoring the Christmas Angel Tree to help the Lompoc Pregnancy & Parenting Support Ctr. (1-805 735-2353). They help with crisis pregnancies, baby care, parenting classes and adoption information.

They are always in need of baby clothes and baby items. They also welcome “gently used” baby clothes. Various needed baby items are listed on the back of each angel on the Angel trees in the church vestibule. So…PLEASE BE AN ANGEL, and PICK AN ANGEL from either tree and drop off the unwrapped baby item in the ANGEL BOX at MASS by Sunday, DECEMBER 29th.
