CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wander-ing magi from the East. Today we cele-brate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as “one mightier than I.” But he did as Jesus asked, and the “Holy Spirit descended” and heaven’s voice spoke to Jesus, “You are my beloved Son.” Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today’s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, “peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.” Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God’s word.

LLAMADOS A SERVIR Por muchas semanas hemos celebra-do la aparición de la presencia divina en su forma humana. Cuando era niño, Jesús vivió con María y José, al nacer lo visi-taron unos pastores y luego algunos er-rantes magos de Oriente. Hoy celebramos otra situación, ocurrida un tiempo después, a un grupo reunido en el río Jordán. Juan vaciló cuando le tocó bautizar a Jesús, a quien reconocía como “uno más poderoso que yo”. Pero hizo como Jesús se lo pidió, “descendió el Espíritu Santo” y una voz celestial habló a Jesús: “Tú eres mi hijo, el predilecto”. Jesús estaba em-pezando su vida pública de enseñanza y de servicio. Pronto comenzaría a llamar a otros a seguirlo. Pedro fue el primero que Jesús llamó. En la segunda lectura de hoy anuncia el centro del mensaje: “la paz que traería Jesucristo, el Señor de todos”. Pedro fue llamado, y tú y yo somos llamados a llevar el mensaje y cumplir la palabra de

Volunteers needed for Altar Society The Church is asking for volunteers who have a sincere desire

to serve the church and the Lord in a special way. We need volunteers to give their time for a maximum of two hours a day, once a week in a month to clean the church. It includes light dusting of the Altar, Sacristy and kitchen. Dusting and cleaning the pews, putting our Sunday collection envelopes

and any other “Special Collection envelopes” out.

Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trekkie conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skep-tics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John’s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his bap-tism. At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life�giving proper-ties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since “today there is a blessing on the water.” At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time. —James Field, Copyright © J. La costumbre del bautismo infantil debe ser mu-cho más que un acto social o una tradición cultural, don-de el ropón y los regalos son más importantes que la doc-trina cristiana, y los padrinos se escogen no por su buen ejemplo sino por su cuenta bancaria. Según los Hechos de los Apóstoles, familias enteras se bautizaban cuando el padre de familia decidía hacerse cristiano. Esta práctica de bautizar, no solo al nuevo cre-yente sino también a su mujer y a sus hijos, poco a poco, quedó solo en bautizar los niños del original creyente. El mundo en aquel tiempo estaba basado sobre la familia así como muchas culturas latinas de hoy. El bautizo infantil nació en la Iglesia primitiva y al pasar de los siglos llegó a transformarse en un rito reli-gioso muy importante en la catequesis del nuevo cris-tiano. “WALK FOR LIFE” BREAK OUT THOSE WALKING SHOES

January is Sanctity of Human Life month. One way we can let our communities know how united we are in promoting and protecting God’s gift of life, is by participating in a Walk for Life. Saturday, January 18th – Los Angeles “ One Life LA” starts at 11 am with a youth rally at the Olivera St. Plaza, across from the Union Station. The main event begins there at 12:30 pm with a short welcoming. Then approximately 35,000 walkers will proceed to the new LA State Historic Park. This program will feature nationally known speakers and celebrities. For more information, OneLifeLA.org.

Sunday, January 19th - Santa Maria “Walk for Life 2020” has been held for over 25 years. It will start at 2:30pm at the City Hall Courtyard, Broadway and Cook. The program includes prayers led by local pastors, personal testimony and music.

After the program, participants will walk one-half mile to a second assembly area across from the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic at 415 E. Chapel St. with prayers, singing, etc. The Walk will conclude with a social get together at the Care Net Pregnancy Support and Resource Center at 201 S. Miller, Ste 102.
