STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION

The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of

the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the very first temptation by the devil.

That story is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As

believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our

lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like God—we want con-trol, power, and answers to all of life’s difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this season of re-

pentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of

conversion. We look to God and to one another for strength against temptation.

FORTALEZA ANTE LA TENTACIÓN

El primer domingo del tiempo de Cuar-esma siempre incluye el relato evan-

gélico de la tentación del Señor Jesús en el desierto por el diablo. Este año tiene como trasfondo la primera lectura de Génesis, en la que se narra la primera tentación del diablo que ocurre en un jardín de delicias. El relato del Evan-

gelio transcurre en el desierto. Los creyentes sabemos que la tentación

viene tanto en nuestros propios jardines de delicias como en los desiertos de

nuestra vida. La Cuaresma comienza, y nuestra atención se dirige a esa

tentación dentro de nosotros de hacer-nos como Dios –queremos control,

poder y respuesta a todas las difíciles preguntas de la vida. A nuestras comun-idades de fe se les ofrece este tiempo de arrepentimiento para que podamos unir nuestro corazón al de otros en el difícil camino de la conversión. Nos volvemos a Dios y hacia los demás buscando for-

taleza ante la tentación.

Volunteers needed for Altar Society The Church is asking for volunteers who have a sincere desire

to serve the church and the Lord in a special way. We need volunteers to give their time for a maximum of two hours a day, once a week in a month to clean the church. It includes light dusting of the Altar, Sacristy and kitchen., dusting and cleaning the pews, putting our Sunday collection envelopes

and any other “Special Collection envelopes” out.

Establishing Parish Culture Parish exists to spread the message of God’s love and mercy. To accomplish this, it is imperative to remember that Jesus does not separate us, but unites us. In responding to God’s call there are some misconcep-tions that abound, and one of them is that the Pastor must be involved in everything. The archdiocese understands that it is impossible for one person to meet the demands of all the parish-ioners, and so it was recommended the formation of a Parish Leadership Team (PLT). This team is composed of parishioners trained to support the priest and make recommendations to re-solve issues arising from the day to day operations of the church. In October, Fr. Jeejo and four members of the La Puri-sima Church (PLT) participated in a three-day workshop in Anaheim, CA called “The Amazing Parish”. This conference was attended by more than 125 priests and their appointed PLT members, from far and near, to learn more about how to have an Amazing Parish. More than 1,000 people from different dio-ceses attended the workshop. The four members of our Parish Leadership Team have completed the training and have made a commitment to support our Pastor and our parishioners. Therefore, from now on, if you have a concern, question or are in need of something that is NOT spiritually based, please contact the Pastoral Center and let the secretary know that you would like to speak to a member of the PLT. Give them your name and number and a member of the team will respond to your call to assist you with your concerns. This is new! This is Change! Change is not always easy and accepted. But, with God by our side, we can be as-sured that our Parish will grow in spirit to know, love, and serve the Lord.

Estableciendo la cultura parroquial La parroquia existe para difundir el mensaje del amor y la mis-ericordia de Dios. Para lograr esto, es imperativo recordar que Jesús no nos separa, sino que nos une. Al responder al llamado de Dios, abundan los conceptos erró-neos, y uno de ellos es que el Pastor debe estar involucrado en todo. La arquidiócesis entiende que es imposible que una perso-na satisfaga las demandas de todos los feligreses, por lo que se recomendó la formación de un Equipo de Liderazgo Parroquial (PLT). Este equipo está compuesto por feligreses capacitados para apoyar al sacerdote y hacer recomendaciones para resolver los problemas que surgen de las operaciones diarias de la igle-sia. En octubre, el p. Jeejo y cuatro miembros de la Iglesia La Purísima (PLT) participaron en un taller de tres días en Ana-heim, CA llamado "La Parroquia Increíble". Se invita a las mujeres católicas mayores de 18 años de las par-roquias de La Purísima y Reina de los Ángeles a unirse a la Corte La Purísima. Las cuotas anuales son de $ 35.
