La Plata Conservation District College Scholarship Program RECIPIENT SELECTION, ACCEPTANCE, AND DISPURSMENT Upon a full review of applications, recommendation will be made to the full District Board of Supervisors who shall make the final decision, based on demonstrated scholastic ability, academic commitment to an appropriate field of study, involvement in extracurricular activities, volunteer projects, and financial need. Recipients are expected to attend at least one meeting of the La Plata Conservation District meeting, which are normally held on the second Tuesday of each month commencing at 3:00 P.M. Scholarships will be awarded in two equal payments: (1) the first upon commencement of the school year and (2) the second after proof of maintenance of 2.5 or better grade point average (or equivalent) through the first semester or quarter, as applicable. 2016-17 Scholarship Winner The La Plata Conservation District awarded its 2016-2017 College Scholarship to Michael Semler, the son of Melody and Wayne Semler. Mr. Semler is a 2014 graduate of Bayfield High School, where he distinguished himself academically and through participation in sports and community activities. He recently received his Associates Degree in Agricultural Business and Animal Science at Northeastern Junior College, where he continued to demonstrate high levels of academic achievement. Mr. Semler now attends Colorado State University with a focus on Animal Science and Agricultural Business. The La Plata Conservation District College Scholarship Program recognizes our area students attending accredited institutions of higher learning and pursuing disciplines relating to agriculture, natural resources, or related fields. The scholarships express the La Plata Conservation District’s confidence in and respect for education and training in disciplines relating to agriculture, natural resources, and related fields.

Eligibility and Application Requirements

The La Plata Conservation District is pleased to announce its 2017/18 Scholarship Program for entering college freshman and currently enrolled college or university students. The District will offer $1,500 scholarships for two (2) qualifying students.

ELIGIBILITY

The scholarships are available to high school seniors who have been accepted or enrolled in an accredited college as a full time student with a declared major in agriculture, natural resources or a related field. Some additional majors might include those related to environmental studies, wildlife management, water resource development, renewable energy, range development, wetlands development and maintenance, sustainable food production, forestry, aquatic ecology, soil and land use, and invasive species (among other related areas). Applicants must be residents within the La Plata Conservation District and should have at least a 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), and must not have received a full scholarship from another source.

Do I have to be a college freshman to qualify for the LPCD scholarship? NO, scholarships are meant for EITHER freshman and/or currently enrolled college students. How may I get an application? Scholarship applications are available at the following locations: (1) District Office at 31 Suttle Street, (2) La Plata County Extension Office (La Plata County Fairgrounds), or (3) by download from the District Website at: www.laplatacd.org What if I have questions about completing the application? What if my choice of majors is not mentioned in this announcement? E-mail the above and ask if your “major” qualifies for the scholarship. No restrictions will be placed upon applications for reason of race, creed, color, age, sex, national origin, religion, status, or disability.

Only students with a home address within La Plata Conservation District boundaries will be considered for a possible scholarship.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must present a completed La Plata Conservation District application form, a personal essay, submission of a resume, a complete transcript of grades, and two (2) confidential and sealed letters of recommendation from those not personally related to the applicant who can speak to your civic and academic accomplishments (e.g.,principal, teacher, counselor, employer, etc).

APPLICATION DEADLINE

Applications must be received no later than 5:00 PM, on April 7th, 2017. Application/s must be hand-delivered or mailed to the La Plata Conservation District Office located at 31 Suttle Street, Durango, Colorado, or e-mailed in PDF format as provided in the application form. Successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified by mail no later than April 29, 2017.
