Hi,

I hope you have all had a good Christmas and are ready to see what2021 has in store for us.

Remember the January meeting is on the 18th and will be at the WestAdelaide Football Club. The first trip for the year is Beachport which isvery popular this year and we have extended the numbers as far as thecaravan park has room. Bring your winter woollies as Beachport isoften cold even if Adelaide is hot.

In February we have the Hema HX1 course then the StrawberryBreakfast (Valentines day) and the Tyre Repair workshop the followingweekend. All three still have vacancies if you are interested.

2021 is also the 50th anniversary of the club and we have some re-enactment trips planned and a celebration dinner planned inNovember. Also next year August thereabouts, a Toyota LandCruiser70th Anniversary Multi-State Gathering is being planned. If anythinglike the National 4WD Conference held in 2019, it will be a fantasticopportunity and adventure to meet kindered 4WD enthusiasts.

Happy New Year and best wishes for 2021

The 18th January General Meeting will beheld at ~ West Adelaide Football Club

57 Milner Rd, Richmond.Open at 6.45pm. We may still be limited in social

gathering numbers at that time therefore it is important that you bookyour spot - use booking code http://www.trybooking.com/BMXJH

For newer members (and older ones too), a WAFC location mapand entry details can be found on page 22.

Why train? To learn how to properly use your 4WD and this becomes more important as vehicles becomemore tecnically advanced. Experience allows you to use more challenging tracks knowing your vehicle canhandle situations that may arise. Training weekends also have an enjoyable social side to it as well.

Need extra driving skills, need to use a winch / hi lift jack, recovery, what’s withthese new modern fandangle 4WDs, something else? Just Ask.

ARGADELLS Trip Report October 2020ARGADELLS 2020 ~ Friday 2nd - Monday 5th October (long weekend)Trip Leader: Ralph Abbot Trip Report by: Burgo (David Burgess)

RATING: Moderate / Hard

WEATHER: Hot and windy – Rain and windy –Cold and windy.

THE MOB: Ralph & Rosemary Abbot, Greg &Toni Kelly, John Opie & Geoff Rankine, Malen& Jan Rumbelow, Peter Bradley, AndrewDavis, Linley & James Edwards (Whyallaites),Margaret & Steve Clift, Kylie & Stewart Wright,David Burgess (Burgo) and Jason Sebeeney.

Visitors - John & Karin Davis, also Whyallaites –an early-Christian tribe of desert-dwellers.

COMPANY: Excellent

FIREWOOD: - Ute load of firewood courtesyLinley and James from Whyalla – a BIG THANKYOU! Lots of cooking too.

TRIPS: On Saturday morning the group wassplit into two smaller groups. Ralph said he'dtake one (A) group - and asked who had been onArgadells before.

Andrew Davis (foolishly knee-jerked) and put hishand up and, surprisingly, was instantly andunanimously appointed leader of the other (B)group. He protested that he didn't know thetracks and would get lost - but Ralph gesturedhypnotically towards the map, and also assuredhim there would be others in the convoy whocould read the map and assist with directions –yeah right….

GROUP “B”

As it happened, they arrived back for lunch so Andrew and the team didn't get totally lost – just a bit – but hisback-up navis helped out!

GROUP “A”

Ralph's A group headed toward the treacherousDeadman’s Gully. After all had negotiated the gullyhalf-way up the hill Ralph and Rose stopped for afemale goat caught in a fence.

“Light a cooking fire the cry went up! Yiros or roastedleg tonight!”

But Rampant Rabbit (animal lover) AKA Ralph-the-rescuer cried “NO WAY – stand aside!”

Holding one of the horns, he was able to release thewire from around the back legs but there was a wirevery tightly around her neck. That could not beloosened so he used cutters on the wire. Once freedthe nanny scampered away…..so baked beans againtonight.

A group had further culinary bad luck in that theycouldn’t find the Ice Cream Shop – so none of thateither that night.

MT ARDEN - UP

It’s a long way to the top - and there was plenty of rock n roll! continued on page ??

MT ARDEN – DOWN: – AKA “Oh Shit Hill”

Always a challenge – especially now as large holes have now formed at the bottom – wheels airborne! Thetrack claimed a CV joint – BUGGER!

A tricky fix because there is a “special” nut requiring aspecial “no-doubt-dealer-only tool” – also BUGGER!

CREEK AT THE BOTTOM of “Oh Shit Hill”

Also a challenge – but we didn’t take the new “ChickenTrack” to the left. Jason (photo below) demonstratedhow to negotiate the hard yards of large rocks, ledgesand holes.

SUNDAY

With the rain forecast much later in the day, we setoff for the Thompson Gap that provides a routethrough the mountain range to the western plain.

It is an interesting drive with a locked gate mid-way.We had the code for the gate and passed intoWilkitana. The view of the western plain ismagnificent.

Below: “Sunday Drive Thompson Gap”

We drove to Eyre's Depot, where Edward JohnEyre set up for his epic explorations. In 1840-41Eyre explored a route to Perth. There is a springnearby and for many years it was used to supply PtAugusta.

The original pipes were wooden, short sectionsmade like narrow barrels, for 40 km to Pt Augusta.Eyre's Depot is also a launching pad for a section ofthe Heysen trail.

Once off Wilkitana Station we headed southtowards Pt Augusta. There is a huge solar farmunder construction north of Pt Augusta. It has beenin financial difficulty and has been taken over by1414 Corporation. They plan to heat a towercontaining silicon that melts at 1,414 degrees C anduse it to store energy for use when the sun doesn'tshine.

MONDAY

Many went home. Burgo mooched around Quorn(birthplace of mum in 1899) – enjoyed the quandongcafé – the stones from which (quandongs ….not thecafé) were traditionally used in Chinese Checkers(useless info for quiz nights). Also walked the BushFlora garden (as prompted by another recent tripreport).

At the Quorn Railway Station there weremany pics of people gatherings in early1900s and my mum could well have beenone of the lovely girls delightfully dressedfor their Big Day Out. The “Pitchie Ritchietrain” arrived for a picture - and I joinedthe railway museum tour – run by anamazing passionate group withvolunteers from all around Australia.

Monday night Burgo joined Rosemary andRalph Abbot at the Laura (complimentaryscones, jam and cream on arrival) caravanpark – and enjoyed an evening meal at thelocal rubbedy dub.

Home on Tuesday.

A great weekend had by all!

If you missed it this year – put it on yourcalendar for next year.

A great experience, and good training fora Vic High Country trip. Finally thanks toRalph Abbot for the organisation and hisleadership.

Discover the Flinders Ranges AppVisitors to the Flinders Ranges, one of SA’s most popular tourist locations, have always been keen to learnmore about the region, but this has been difficult in the past.

The Friends of Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park (1995), many of whom are also TLCCSA members, acceptedthe challenge. They developed a comprehensive eGuide Discover the Flinders Ranges in the form of a freesmartphone app. This app was a Friends of Parks Community Engagement winner in 2018, received aPremier’s Certificate for Outstanding Volunteer Service, and recently featured in the Weekend Australian Travelsection. Since 2017, over 3000 local, interstate and international tourists have downloaded the app.

The app provides user-friendly features such as proximity-based narration, high-quality photos, and mapsshowing points-of-interest in relation to current GPS location. It has downloadable guides for tourists, introducing the flora, birds, geology and cultural history of the region. Users do not need an active Internetconnection, provided they have downloaded their choice of tours and guides before arrival.

Self-guided driving or walking tours, using accessible 2WD roads and short walks from car parks, take visitorsto most of the scenic locations and historic sites within the Park, such as Appealinna, Aroona Valley, BrachinaGorge, Bunyeroo Valley, Ikara (Wilpena Pound), and Old Wilpena Station. Overall, the app describes 200 points-of-interest and contains almost 1300 photos and sketches, some from the early 1800’s.

It is suitable for both first-time visitors, and those who are returning to further explore the Park’s iconic floraand fauna, geological features, arid lands scenery, indigenous rock art, and ruins from mid-19th to early 20thcenturies.

The comprehensive photographic guides Flora of the Central Flinders Ranges and Birds Commonly Seen, include identification photos and text for the most common species found in the Park and are invaluable. Livingin the Flinders Ranges: the first one hundred years provides a unique insight into the lives of the pioneersettlers and the Adnyamathanha people.

To encourage app users to visit local tour and service operators, this app offers discount vouchers.

THE STORY SO FAR: Club member Paul Moody and his son Wil had crossed over the Iran - Pakistan borderthru the town of Zahedan. On their way to Taftan, they were to be escorted by local paramilitary troops Leviesfrom the Balochistan region. Their next destination was Quetta around 600kms away and along the way theycaught up with a travelling Italian family they had met earlier. In a twist, Pauls’ Hilux was used to tow thebroken down Levies security vehicle. We take up the story as the Moodys reach the outskirts of Quetta, enjoy.

Editor.

My Longest Week cont’d. We reached the outskirts of the city of Quetta as darkness fell to be met by anarmoured car with an armed guard kitted out for battle. Weeks before there had been a major atrocity and thecity was on edge. A prominent lawyer had been murdered and consequently the entire legal profession hadturned out for his funeral. A suicide bomber had infiltrated the occasion, detonating to kill and maim more thantwo hundred. This tragedy struck at the heart of both the government and society at large and the fear waspalpable.

The wing mirror of the armoured car was broken andour waiting escort had to sit with the door open to flagus down as we appeared out of the night on the poorlylit road. No wonder he had full protective clothing onto greet us. The Friday evening traffic was congestedand the last short distance to our haven of safetyseemed to take an inordinate amount of time. TheSerena Hotel was a five star hotel and for once in mylife the price was not on my agenda as I quicklyreadjusted to luxury since leaving Istanbul.

Whilst Quetta is the highest city in the country with acool arid climate it is a sprawling, low rise, characterless, metropolis of a million. It is sheltered bybarren brown mountains to the east protecting the cityfrom Afghanistan. In Pakistan Balochistan is a state

whilst it is also the capital of this region spread across three countries and this is the spiritual capital of allBalochis. A complex history and no plan for the future.

“Hello, I am Lawrence.” a drivercalled as I strolled past his UNvehicle the next morning. Iturned to see a happy, smilingface of a middle aged local whostepped forward to shake myhand. “Lawrence is not a localname.“ I queried awkwardly.“May we talk?” he asked and Islipped into defensive mode.Lawrence had a chilling life storythat he wanted me to be awareof and asked nothing of me.

Lawrence is a Christian, one of atiny minority in Pakistan and hewanted me to know as a fellowChristian that they are beingoppressed by the Muslimmajority in a brutal fashion.

My Longest Week cont’d. Luckily Lawence is a driver for the United Nations earning a secure living able toprovide for his family. His sons Fred and John are in their twenties and are unemployed with few jobopportunities open to Christians who are from the poorest part of society, commanding only the most menialof jobs. Their home is regularly stoned and it is not safe for them to walk out in their district as the anti-Christian sentiment is at unprecedented levels. Their church is closed and they worship in private. He craveslaw and order, the primary requirement for everyone, everywhere.

I was aghast unable to adequately respond or offer assistance. He wanted nothing of me but that I shouldknow and pass on the message. I subsequently discovered that Christianity is a legacy of the British colonialrule of the nineteenth century and are equally divided between Protestants and Catholics. At the time Ireland, then a colonial state, played a significant role in the Raj in both the army and the spread of the Catholic faith.

Securing transit visas for Iran, Pakistan and India is an extremely difficult process both in time and expense withall countries requiring that one needs a “Letter of Invitation”. Iran will not issue a visa until we had visas forPakistan as they wanted to see where and when we would be exiting their country.

Agencies provide these letters of introduction, for a fee of course, then a personal visit to the Pakistan embassyin Dublin for an interview explaining the purpose of my visit. The whole process had to be repeated for theIranian visa and again for India. There are so few overland travellers passing through these sensitive regionsand countries. We add so little value that we are overtly discouraged from these mad cap adventures. On aprevious planned transit through Iran to Turkmenistan my visa was declined and I suspected that this wouldhappen again.

Quetta is a centre of regional government where we are further required to secure an NOC (No ObjectionCertificate). This is a legal certificate for tourists to travel under security in these “prohibited areas”. Our nextouting is to the appropriate office in the city to secure the NOC. Our guards were friendly, attentive and clearlystressed as we cleared numerous military checkpoints en route to our appointment. This is a Saturday whenthe offices are normally closed but in this time of emergency are open 24/7.

A fierce argument was taking place as wewaited in the anti-room of our Military Officerand two junior members of staff slunk out indue course. With trepidation we entered thiscluttered den to be greeted by a mostcharming character. He radiated both smilesand bonhomie to us whilst still scowling attwo more subordinates cowering in thecorner.

Over tea he expressed great interest in ourtravels and concerns that we were in his cityafter travelling the dangerous border roadfrom Taftan. He was happy with our chosenonward routing which was understandable asthere is only one road foreign drivers areallowed to take. We ticked his boxes andhaving ascertained we were neither Indian, journalists nor missionaries we were grantedour NOC`s. Group photographs were posedfor out in the hall. We were lucky as this was a painless three hour process that often takes a week

With relief we were duly released back into the security of Hotel Serena, our first opportunity to truly relax forweeks. It was a scorching day and Wil took to the solitude of his room. I took the opportunity to swim alonein the pool then download my memories into my diary in the shade of a corner of the walled garden. As I dozeda shadow of a man with a gun appeared on the wall opposite and I shrank motionless into my shady corner infear. He stood on the perimeter wall gazing around, then slowly edged along the top with the stealth of a cat.

My Longest Week cont’d. He came into my sight and I relaxed slightly when I could see his shiny black bootsand blue security uniform. He came into full view catching sight of me with a smile and a wave much to myrelief. I was really on edge and weakly gave him a wave back as he sauntered on with his security duties. Iretreated back to my room with another more recent entry to my diary.

I had expected a minimum three night stay in Quetta and was more than happy to clear this in two, catchingup with the night lost on our way from the border. Just after daybreak we were in the Hilux ready to go withthe vital NOC document in hand duly checked by our Levie security team, who arrived punctually at seven. Ihad anticipated a swift exit from this bleak city early on a Sunday morning but it was not to be.

We edged through our third hotel checkpoint onto the streets that were choked with slow moving honkingtraffic keeping bumper to bumper with our security detail. Progress was slow and our three Levies werestanding aggressively in the back of their truck waving their rifles at all around whilst their siren blared. Ratherfrightening. At an intersection all traffic came to a halt and the officer in the cab with the driver jumped outwith a stick blowing a shrieking whistle that added to the fear we were in. One of the guards leapt out of theback to back up his boss who was shouting and gesticulating at the cars blocking our way. He wrenched opena car door and grabbed a frightened passenger pulling him from his seat out onto the street. He struck thepoor innocent man with his stick many times then turned on the gathering throng with threats and the securityof his own armed militia.

We witnessed this in silence, with all doors locked as we two white men could be seen as the cause of thismoment of madness. The road ahead cleared and the crowds stood back in silence as our Levies re boardedtheir truck and roared off still with siren wailing and us following as close as possible. This was scary.

Halting at the next checkpoint on the edge of the city our Levie officer calmly approached us with smiles anda firm hand shake, appreciating our thanks for delivering us safely. We privately thought he could have cost usour lives.

We had started the long descent from the high plateau to our intended destination of faraway Sukkur as thelandscape in the suburbs rapidly changed from the abject poverty in the city. Fruit trees were in the yards ofevery property and orchards of honey sweet apples were being harvested. Overloaded cargo trucks of fruitwere heading in our direction to the distant Arabian seaport city of Karachi.

As we completed formalities, an old brown Fiat military box truck wheezed to a stop close by with an escortand we recognised this was the Italian family group who we had been following from the border. Pasquelewas a handsome serious adventurer, skier and mountaineer with his wife and two small children on boardheading to climb peaks in the north of the country. We shook hands exchanging greetings as his wife beameddown from the lofty cab and his kids peaked out of a box window and we waved. We were all keen to get outof Quetta as fast as we could so delayed our story telling until later.

We fell into the routine and followed our escort vehicle and new mates whose truck was extremely slow andsmoky. Fortunately we were descending to the Bolan Pass a strategic Silk Roads point between Afghanistan,Pakistan and Iran. The gateway between Central and South Asia and of great military significance in history.

The Khyber Pass is better known than the Bolan Pass but of equal significance, still controlled by the local tribestoday who give lip service to the countries they border. Law and order is theirs to administer and paying taxesis not on their agenda.

The rocky chasms and gorges were dark, deep and intimidating, snowbound and frequently closed in thewinter months. We were in no hurry in our mini convoy often encountering broken down trucks and discardedwrecks along the way. Eventually the twisting roads eased as we reached the Bolan river valley in thescorching heat of another mid- September day. We were still elevated over the river, looking down andimagining it in full flood in the spring time with the snow melt from the vast ranges of the Toba Kaker. On thisday the river was a relative trickle in a wide expanse of shingly gravel as shepherds with sheep and goats wereheading to the low lands and markets far away. I imagined perfect terrain for the camel trains on their traderoutes throughout history wending their way to distant markets too.

Leaving Quetta dissipated the stress and tension we had been feeling since leaving Iran and we relaxed. Allwas good and we were over the worst... or so we thought.

It was after dark when we arrived in the city of Sukkur on the banks of the Indus River. This is a trading centre, river port and well connected by roads and rail services throughout the country.

Over the years our Constitution has been ‘tweaked’ to allow for minor changes in how we operatebut it has never been subject to a full ‘work over’.

Your Committee has now undertaken a full Constitution review. A few deletions have occurred forexample did you know that we had a sub branch in Whyalla? Also a number of changes effectedparticularly to accommodate how we might operate in unusual times like those experienced with theCOVID-19 pandemic.

The refreshed document is ‘marked up’ so you can readily review the suggestedchanges has been posted on the Club web site (www.tlccsa.asn.au/monthly)for your review if you are so inclined. Changes are in red text and intendeddeletions are struck through. In most cases there is an explanation box includedwhich you just click on to read the content.

The plan is to now discuss any members thoughts or suggestions on the changesat the February General Meeting and as necessary effect any further changes. We will then vote on the amendments at the March General Meeting.

In the interim, any queries or suggestions (or for those who cannot make the meetings) can beforwarded to: [email protected]
