Skiing and sport in general have become the trademark of La Clusaz, but the resort also welcomes new disciplines such as Ski-Joering, Speed-Riding or Snowscoots. The annual La Clusaz Radikal Mountain event brings the world’s best skiers and snowboarders to the resort to take on the challenging off-piste slopes. The frequency of the events taking place in the resort has led to a veritable savoir-faire and experience in the organiza-tion of International events, including the Cross-country Skiing World Cup which they are hosting for the 6th time in January 2013.

lET IT SNoW…White gold is not a rarity in La Clusaz, with possible snow falls from the end of November to the beginning of May there is on average a culmination of 4m of snow per year. The snow is of a guaranteed high quality thanks to the proximity to the great lakes of Annecy, Lake Geneva and Lake du Bourget and the resort’s location in the north of the Alps, all helped along by the 190 snow makers.Make the first trails down the slopes at 9am over the beautifully prepared slopes with endless gullies, bowls, jumps and hits to explore.

A TrAdITIoN of chAmpIoNSThe resort has produced some great cham-pions since the 1960s, Indeed, it is the resort that can boast the most awards, with 9 world champions. This doesn’t include the freesty-lers who have great success in the X-Games, the freeriders and the young talents who are monopolizing the national podiums. They are unanimous in their support for the quality of the ski area which allowed them to train to become and stay the best in their discipline

FIVE mASSIFSWITh A mulTITudE of poSSIbIlITIESLa Clusaz is an ideal destination for all, with a large variety of slopes enough to please beginners and experts alike. With a top altitude of 2600m over the 5 interlinked massifs of Beauregard, Manigod, l’Etale, l’Aiguille and Balme, the resort has earned its place at the top for all disciplines of snowsports. The 84 slopes with a total of 132km of runs are linked by highly efficient ski lifts. For more enjoyment, a shuttle bus service also links La Clusaz to Le Grand Bor-nand resort, with a Massif des Aravis ski pass, you can access 220kms of slopes.

AdrENAlIN pAckEd ExpErIENcESAs soon as the sun rises over the Alps, the back country skiers are up and already on their way up to the snowy summits of the Aravis range…

Over the years, La Clusaz has become an epicenter for off-piste skiing with its untamed and remarkable mountains. Not surprising then that it is the hotbed for Freeriding champions such as Sébastien Michaud, and the host of a qualification round in the Freeride World Tour!

Nothing can compare to the ultimate adre-nalin rush and feeling of freedom you will get from an action packed day in the Aravis.

The position of La Clusaz lends itself to plenty of off-piste possi-bilities and it is well known for its magnificent coombs.

It’s a promised land for ski mountaineers and backcountry skiers as they congregate here with their « fat skis », airbag rucksacks and their Arva®, where they can access virgin snow on a long descent after only 20mins on foot..

Clusaz-Mag’ : What do you think of the Freeriding area in La Clusaz?

seb MiChaud : La Clusaz is well known for being a charming village and also for its fantastic snow filled coombs. With the changing snow conditions, I’m constantly discovering new possibilities. Of course everyone is aware of the classics, such as the Etale from Borderan, the Fernuy or even Bellachat, but there is so much more to discover…there’s always some place to go to have fun, and if the conditions are not good at altitude, there’s always fun to be had in the forest.

CM : What security advice would you give to freeriders

s.M. : First of all, you need to be in good physical shape and to have the right equipment, I would advise wide skis. It’s important to respect the mountain, the weather and other skiers. Being aware of and using security equipment is essential (Arva, shovel, probe, bag equipped with an airbag, first aid kit…). One last piece of advice, don’t hesitate to consult the snow patrol particularly about weather conditions.

CM : What do you love about Freeriding ?

s.M. : I love freeriding, my life is all about freeriding, the best is when you do it with friends, there’s nothing like the freedom of flying down the slopes, not necessarily for a competition, it’s just pure pleasure!

CM : To finish up, do you have anything to say about La Clusaz Radikal Mountain?

s.M. :La Clusaz Radikal Mountain has taken place here for the last 2 years, and the 1st stage in the Freeride World Qualifier attracts the best freeriders all fighting for their place on the Freeride World Tour for the next year. The Aravis has tons of extreme faces which gives a great show for the public. After the 2012 edition the riders all left very satisfied by the organization, the welcome they received and the quality of the ride. Not all resorts can boast that…so see you in 2013!

Festivities will begin on Wednesday 16th January with cross-country skiing demonstrations in the centre of the village followed by official training sessions from Thursday onwards.

races4 races will take place over the weekend: mens and womens Mass Start classic style race (10km womens and 15km mens) as well as the 4x5km relay for women and 4x10km relay for men, with the first two racers classic skiing and the last two skate skiing.

aNimPorTaNTiNTerNaTioNaleveNT20 000 spectators are expected to attend to watch the 200 athletes from 30 nations com-pete against each other. Over the years, this international event has become one of the most important sporting events in France and Northern Europe ( Russia, Norway, Germany etc…).

(*) La Clusaz has organized 6 Cross-country skiing World Cups in 1987, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and this year 2013, 9 Freestyle World Cups, 2 Paragliding World Cups and 6 Speed Record trials.

The plateau of the Confins is one of the most popular Nordic ski locations in the Haute Savoie, and has been the official host to heats during the 1987, 2004, 2006, 2008 et 2010 World Cups. The reasons for its popularity are numerous; 50km of slopes at the foot of the Aravis combes, a 7km link with neighbouring Grand Bornand, highly efficient snow making

and all this capped off by a warm welcome. The area has been awarded the « 4 Nordiques » by Nordique France for the last 10 years which recognizes the quality of the area according to various criteria; the size and diversity, mainte-nance of the slopes, equipment and services etc. The Confins is also proud of its « Nordic Cross » stadium with bumps, dips, ski jumps and other obstacles to clearto have fun while you

ski and ...

... try out a variety of terrains. GrEEN ATTITudELa Clusaz is closely involved with AGSN, the association in charge of the management of the Confins area, in a common objective to provide quality skiing whilst respecting the environment. Their approach, including; maintaining high quality daily conditioned slopes, concealed snow makers, a consistency between the forest tracks and the slopes and an immediate planting of grass at the end of the winter, aims to please both nature lovers and die hard skiers. The Confins plateau is also the only place in France to use an electric snow bike, which is 100% silent and non-pol-luting.

For over 8 years, La Clusaz has been declared a Famille plus resort, this confirms the resorts commitment to providing a high quality of service to visitors in all aspects. The resort adheres to a list of over 100 criterion including the welcome and availability of information, the activities and entertainment organized by the resort, respect of the environment, the restaurants, accommodation, facilities, transport and security. This nomination has enabled the resort to pro-vide additional improvements to the services to parents, the creation of baby changing facilities throughout the village, a meeting point in the centre of the village and the rental of 4x4 prams adapted to the mountain, among others. A complete list of the facilities and services available can be found in the La Clusaz guide “La Clusaz en Famille”.

For the last 5 years the family can’t wait to come back every year to La Clusaz for their family holiday. Carine and Sébastien have been coming for years and were eager to pass on their love of the mountains to their child-ren. The resort offers everything they could wish for in a holiday; ski, sun, snow, snow shoe walking, not forgetting the ubiquitous cosy log fire, they’re never disappointed.“The children have their ski lessons in the

morning, and then in the afternoon, we all ski together and they practice what they have learnt in the morning. They are aiming for their 2nd and 3rd stars this year” says Carine. “There’s always something to do here, be it diving into the pool, going sledging, a trip to the snow garden or a visit to the farm…” adds Sébastien. Last year Arthur and Léonie made the happy discovery of the goat farm on the Confins plateau just beside the sledge run, they loved seeing the goats up close and tasting the fresh farm produce. But best of all is the delicious tartiflette at the end of the day, made to a traditional recipe passed on to them at the farm where they bought the Reblochon….once again they head home eager for their next trip back

A SENSE of FAmILYA holiday to La Clusaz is sure to be a memorable one, action packed for all the family. There is a wide range of activities on offer, for example, child care facilities, children’s snow garden, sledging and so many sporting activities to try out

OWN Like the mountains in general, La Clusaz is multi-faceted. You can of course discover the area on skis, but there are so many more activities, such as snow shoe walking, or a day as a trapper being pull along by husky dogs, a romantic ride in a horse drawn carriage, laser rifle shooting on a biathlon, speedriding, ice skating or even yoga…No excuse not to take to the Great Outdoors.

24

Page 27: La Clusaz Mag winter n°2 2012/2013 GB

Imported from Scandinavia, the ancestral sport ski-joering has recently seen a come-back. It involves being pulled along in the snow by a horse. It is open to all from the most unsure beginner to expert level and from the age of 7 years. Indeed it has been seen that inexperienced skiers may gain in confidence after trying ski joering. As the horse pulls you along you hold on to a short bar which holds your body safely away and you wear specifi-cally short skis.

A crAzY ATmoSphErEFor the last 25 years the crazy “Défi Foly” has been the final event of the winter, closing the season in its own inimitable style. Taking place this year on 27th-28th April 2013 it sees sportsmen and women competing on skis, mono skis, snow boards, or anything that slides(!). Nothing different about that, you may think, but the event does not take place on snow. The aim is to slide the longest dis-tance over the Confins Lake! Since 1986, 150

slightly crazy competitors compete each year in front of 1000s of spectators who come to watch this spectacular and exhilarating show.

JuST for fuNThe star attraction of this weekend of fun and frolics has to be the OGNI event, otherwise known as Unidentified Floating Objects (UFOs!), floating inventions right out of the imagination of those crazy enough to parti-cipate. These elaborate inventions provide a hilarious end to the event, as the spectators witness their sometimes catastrophic descent into the icy waters of the Confins Lake in the exceptional surroundings of the Confins, overlooked by the magnificents combs of the Aravis.

Each cheese is between 13-14 cm in diameter, 3-3.5 cm high and weighs from 450 – 550g and has a supple and creamy paste. The natural rind varies from yellow to orange with a light covering of white mould. The paste is smooth and ivory coloured, with a supple texture. There are two distinct types of Reblochon.

• reblochonFermier which is made twice a day using the milk from one particular herd. It can be distinguished by the green casein label applied during fabrication.

• reblochon laitier which is made only once a day in a dairy with the milk from a variety of farms. It can be distinguished by its red casein label.

A biT of

hisTory…In the region of Thônes in the Haute Savoie right on the heart of the Aravis massif during the 13th century, the landowners would tax the mountain farmers according to the amount of milk their herds produced. The farmers would therefore not fully milk the cows until after the landowner had measured the yield. As soon as the landowners had left, the farmers would ‘reblocher’ that is to say, finish milking the cows. The milk that remains is much richer, producing the creaminess of the cheese, Reblochon.

The farmers in La Clusaz are dedicated to the quality of their production and continue in the tradition of farm produced cheeses, with a twice daily milk yield, with no let-up 365 days a year! You can also enjoy the cheeses straight from the farm with the added extra of the alpine view!!
