24th Montcalm Mile E llie picked up her card this morning. Ellie usually rides the police car and takes the pictures. This year Michaela did. Elle is happy with her performance and that I didn’t delete the pictures from the card. Ellie mentioned that many of the area college age runners consider the Montcalm Mile their favorite race! The race was the smoothest ever! We had roughly 212 runners (debate still continues on the status of the horse). Heidi collected the money. It was sure nice to see it separated the next morning. Jim, Shawn, Ellie, and Fred registered runners. Jeff did relief registration since everyone registering was running and needed to warm up. Matt and Dave handed out clipboards with entries. With that much help we had lulls registering. We closed registration, boxed supplies, and then the last runner came. Thanks Heidi for getting him set up! The finish went smoothly. Dave and Tom worked the head of the chute directing runners and redirecting bandits. Brian, Walt, and George took care of the timing. Jim and Connie handed out envelopes and acted as pushers. At the end of the chute, Rita, Joanne, and Barbara helped give out the medals. Linda and Kathy picked up the envelopes. Matching the timing with the race numbers and producing results went very smoothly, although the crew finished just before the fireworks! One seemingly potential problem was misspellings on the final spreadsheet, but as it turned out, the spellings on the tabs were correct, and runners had unusual names. Results and pictures are up on the site, and the only thing left to do is to repair some of the stanchions. The race committee review the race and their findings follow: •no bandits •bed race came through while the chute was up and blocking the way, needs coordination next year, bed racers didn’t know where the finish line was •one put the bar code tag in the envelope instead of the name tag •one envelope was empty

Ellie picked up her card this morning. Ellie

usually rides the police car and takes the

pictures. This year Michaela did. Elle is happy

with her performance and that I didn’t delete

the pictures from the card. Ellie mentioned that

many of the area college

age runners consider

the Montcalm Mile their

favorite race!

The race was the

smoothest ever! We had roughly 212 runners

(debate still continues on the status of the

horse). Heidi collected the money. It was sure

nice to see it separated the next morning. Jim,

Shawn, Ellie, and Fred registered runners. Jeff

did relief registration since everyone registering

was running and needed to warm up. Matt and

Dave handed out clipboards with entries. With

that much help we had lulls registering. We

closed registration, boxed supplies, and then

the last runner came. Thanks Heidi for getting

him set up!

The finish went smoothly. Dave

and Tom worked the head of

the chute directing runners and

redirecting bandits. Brian, Walt,

and George took care of the

timing. Jim and Connie handed

out envelopes and acted as pushers. At the

end of the chute, Rita, Joanne, and Barbara

helped give out the medals. Linda and Kathy

picked up the envelopes.

Matching the timing with the race numbers

and producing results went very smoothly,

although the crew finished just before the

fireworks! One seemingly potential problem

was misspellings on the final spreadsheet,

but as it turned out, the spellings on the tabs

were correct, and runners had unusual names.

Results and pictures are up on the site, and

the only thing left to do is to repair some of

the stanchions.

The race committee review the race and their

findings follow:•no bandits•bed race came through while the chute was up and blocking the way, needs coordination next year, bed racers didn’t know where the finish line was•one put the bar code tag in the envelope instead of the name tag•one envelope was empty

Page 2: La Chute July Newsletter

•redo the registration form to match the set-up of the race number•add a place for the bib number on the registration form, that will link the number to additional runner information•cell phone worked fine•envelopes vs. ring; debate continues

The race raised $850, so the club is all set for

2011. Thanks again to all those who helped

out at the race!

A d d i t i o n a l R e s u l t s : K a r e n C o s t e l l oRun for Hope (3/20/2010) “Half Marathon”- 1:59:50and The Prospect Mt. Road Race (5/8/10)- 1:05:57. That was my first time up Prospect and what a lovely day to do it, rain and fog, no views except the blacktop. But FUN! I got third in my age group (55-59), but I know I beat some younger folks. See you on the road. Karen

Usain Bolt is the fastest man alive, but can a top track cyclists beat him? That was a question posed in the June issue of outside magazine. Most trackies know that a top track sprinter doing a 200M time trial will go almost twice as fast as a 100m runner ( both pretty darn close to 10 seconds, with the track rider going twice the distance), but the cyclists has the advantage of the standing start. The folks at Outside magazine went to Jim Martin, and former track racer and now one of the top cycling bio-mechanist in the world. From a standing start, it makes sense that the longer the race gets the more likely the cyclist is to win, as the runners are already slowing down after 100M and the cyclists is just gaining speed. But it is a pretty close race at 100M. Who do you think won?The answer is the cyclists by 0.16 seconds. Bolt pulls ahead at the start, but then Eadie

Passes him at 89.7 meters. Jim’s models are excellent, and can be be highly accurate, but when it comes down to 0.16 seconds, I think it could still be anyone’s race. If those two men lined up at the starting line in top form, I wouldn’t have much confidence in predicting the winner one way or the other.
