Why do companies employ people in India or China and not the UK? • Outsourcing has become very popular due to the
fact that production sites are cheaper and that labour is cheaper. • The quality of labour in counties like India is still
very high. • This is called ‘the spatial division of labour’ (when a
company takes advantage of cheaper labour elsewhere in the world). It can only happen as a result of transport improvements.
What are some of the major improvements in transport? (p164) 1. Steam 2. Railways 3. Jet Aircraft
E.g. The AirBus A380 can carry 487 passengers.Watch here from 2.00 mins
4. Container Ships Intermodal containers being moved without
the cargo being emptied.
What has caused the world to shrink?
Heightened connectivity has changed the world – the ‘shrinking world’ effect.
Shrinking World • As travel time falls due to new inventions and
communication networks improve, it makes people feel closer together.• This perceptual change is called the shrinking world
or time-space compression.
2. ICT and mobile communication use in twenty first century. (p165)
• Technology has helped to make the world feel much smaller than it is. These include;
1. Telephone and the telegraph 2. Broadband and fibre optics 3. GIS and GPS4. The Internet 5. Electronic Banking
At the push of a few buttons people can move money around the world. Companies with apps like PayPal allow money to be transferred around the world quickly and easily. M-Pesa here
