You Can Do It! Identifying the strength of feelings Students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 are learning to name and recognise the range of feelings they feel each day.

“The Feelings Song” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsISd1AMNYU) has good visuals which might help you continue the conversation at home.

In the lessons, children join discussions on whether their emotions would be very strong feelings or small feelings if they were faced with different situations such as a favourite toy breaking. They are also learning to realise that other children may have different feelings about the same event. You might hear your child describe their big or strong emotions as (red light) feelings or little emotions (green light) feelings.

Keeping things in perspective helps everyone to control how upset they become when bad stuff happens. _______________________________________________________________________________

INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN A RESEARCH PROJECT ON PERCEPTIONS OF HOW TO CHANGE BULLYING BEHAVIOURS

Would you like to contribute to research into the different perceptions of how to change bullying behaviours? We are interested in what you or your children think.

This invitation may be read in conjunction with the NSW Department of Education’s Bullying of Students – Prevention and Response Policy available at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/policy-library/policies/bullying-of-students-prevention-and-response-policy and the school’s Anti-bullying Plan. This research has the approval of the University of Wollongong Ethics Committee (2019/167) and the State Education Research Applications Process (SERAP no. 2019324).

If you decide to participate, an interview would be arranged at a time convenient to you. During this interview, I will ask questions about how you perceive bullying behaviours may be changed. I would like to know more about what behaviours constitute as bullying; how you feel bullying behaviours should be responded to; and how you feel that bullying behaviours could be prevented or reduced.

It is important to note, that having had your own experience of bullying is not necessary for participation.

All personal information will be kept private and confidential and no identifiable information about you will be used in publication or presentation. This research is for academic purposes and is not connected with the NSW Department of Education.

Participation in this research is completely voluntary and you may choose to withdraw from the research at any time or not answer questions that you do not feel comfortable answering.

This invitation is open to teachers, parents and students in Years 4, 5 and 6. If you or your child would like to participate, or you have any further questions about the research, please feel free to contact me via email at [email protected] or by completing the form below and returning to your school office.
