return for Term 4

Tomorrow will be an exciting time for many of our 2020 Kindergarten students and their carers. This year’s Kinders will be hosting an open morning so that they can show their new friends what life in Kindergarten is all about. Our more formalised transition to school program will be held next term. Invitations have been mailed to all the students on our list. Most of these arrived in yesterday’s mail. If you didn’t get your letter or your child’s name isn’t on the list please give Mrs Cowburn a call.

Last week Stage 3 were “on tour” through Central West NSW. There was lots of new learning for them, with some of the highlights being a behind the scenes tour of the zoo, gold panning and riding the Skyrail and Cableway at Katoomba. Our students were great ambassadors for our school with lots of the presenters complimenting them on their wonderful manners and excellent behaviour. Some of our exciting photos are on the school website.

Regular attendance at school for every student is essential if students are to achieve their potential and increase their career and life options. If a student misses as little as 8 days in a school term, by the end of primary school they’ll have missed over a year of school. Our Home School Liasion Officer regularly checks our rolls and attendance patterns. Our most recent check was completed last week. At that time I was asked to make sure I reminded parents of the importance of explaining their child’s absence. If your child is absent from school or late to school and we haven’t received an explanation from you we will send you an SMS message. This also works as a child protection message if you think your child is at school and for some reason they haven’t arrived. After 2 days if we still haven’t received an explanation of your child’s absence then we send a written reminder home. After 7 days, even if we receive an explanation from you the absence is automatically recorded as unexplained.

Resilience and Happiness - You Can Do It! In Early Stage 1 and Stage 1, students are learning ways to stay calm and resilient. To achieve this they are being encouraged to use relaxed breathing, find something fun to do or talk to a grown-up. These strategies will help them from becoming too upset and allow them to get back to work or play.

Everyone experiences negative events differently. Some children may ‘make a mountain out of a mole hill’ by exaggerating a situation, while others remain calm and unworried. In Stage 2, students are beginning to use the Catastrophe Scale to keep things in perspective when dealing with negativity and challenging situations. Anger, worry or sadness do not have to be a constant in our lives.

Mindfulness is being aware of what is happening in the present moment. Scientific research has proven that mindfulness meditation:

• helps us to manage pain and stress

• helps us to build resilience and confidence

• improves our focus in the classroom

• helps us with creativity and collaboration

It's not about trying to clear your mind but allowing thoughts and emotions to come and go without judgment and familiarising ourselves with the present moment. Stage 3 are finding that it takes practise to be able to do this.

We have been asked by numerous parents to run this wonderful education Interrelate Program once again.

Today all children from Years 3 to 6 received a form to participate. We only run this program every two years as it has a wonderful reputation of meeting the needs of many questions that your children will ask at this age group. This is not compulsory but we recommend considering this program.
