Juvenile diabetes, or type 1 diabetes, occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys certain cells called beta cells in the pancreas. These beta cells are the cells that produce insulin in the body. Insulin moves the glucose in the foods we eat to other cells throughout the body. Without insulin, the glucose stays in the blood which causes serious damage to all organ systems in the body. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) was founded by parents of children with type 1 juvenile diabetes and is focused on a single goal - accelerating research progress to cure diabetes and its complications.
