Teaching Experience: Faculty Learners: As Vice-Chair for Education of the Section for Surgical Sciences and Program Director for Surgery, I am responsible for faculty development throughout the Section. Under the leadership of the Chair of Surgery and the Chair of the Section of Surgical Sciences, I am responsible for all educational conferences including grand rounds and weekly morbidity and mortality conferences, all of which are certified for credit as Continuing Medical Education courses, with grand rounds having self-assessment credit. Additional faculty development occurs through educational topics and several brief presentations at faculty meetings and dedicated graduate medical education meetings throughout the year.

Our current areas of focus as we move into the next phase are expanding our global health initiatives, continuing to emphasize and develop an environment of inclusion and diversity, and to expand our alumni involvement and activity. Resident Learners: Having completed training and early faculty years at Vanderbilt, I have been involved in resident education now for 9 years. In 2008, I developed and initiated programs including interns skills sessions, intern bootcamp, surgical Olympics and resident teaching conference. Many of these initiatives have resulted in publications and awards, including the David C. Leach Award given by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in 2010, and a publication in 2015 (Kensinger, et al.) which outlined a developed residents-as-educators model that grew from these curricula. Now as program director, I am responsible for the administration of a successful surgery program which has 8 categorical residents per year as well as 24 preliminary residents, approximately half of whom are designated to an advanced profession (dermatology, ophthalmology, etc.,), and half of whom do not have a secured position. Our goals are to support each individual learner so that he or she reaches the highest potential. We have a partnership with AIC Kijabe Hospital in Kijabe, Kenya, and I have worked in partnership with the program director of the residency there as well as faculty member here at Vanderbilt who I appointed as faculty liaison to develop our relationship and further the commitment between the two programs that was established by my predecessor here at Vanderbilt. Additionally, as a clinically practicing surgeon, I instruct within the operating room and on the wards, with responsibility for patients, residents and medical students assigned to my services.

Medical Student Learners: In addition to participating in a myriad of medical student programs including regularly lecturing in clerkships and advanced courses, I have in the past served as a college mentor for Robinson College, a learning community here at Vanderbilt School of Medicine. I have been invited to the educator-recognition banquet for medical students every year that I have been on faculty (a selective invitation), and I have been a part of the AAMC Core EPAs for Entering Residency Pilot as the program director member of the group for Vanderbilt. I co-direct (along with a senior surgical resident) a four-week elective for fourth-year students entering a surgical Match. The course involves 20-30 hours a week of instruction and I participate through direct instruction and also through mentorship of the resident director. It is a pilot program for the national ACS/APDS/ASE Prep Curriculum for which I am the Vice-chair of Curricular Content

Page 8: Kyla Terhune, MD, MBA, FACS · Cook-Ross Unconscious Bias Train-the-Trainer (TTT) Program, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville TN, April 11-14, 2017 Awards/Honors: 2000

and Development. I am director of an advanced clinical elective (ACE) for advanced medical students as well as an acting internship (AI) for senior medical students, both located at the Veterans Affairs Hospital, on the general surgery service. I formally mentor at any given time approximately 20 students from both Vanderbilt School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College, meeting with them every 3 months from the time they establish a surgical specialty as their future direction until they have matched into a surgical program. At the Section level, we are currently working to coordinate our efforts in surgical education across the Section of Surgical Sciences, which includes general surgery, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, urology, cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, and oral-maxillofacial surgery. I also have been very active as a faculty member with the Surgery Interest Groups of both Vanderbilt School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College. Undergraduate Learners As noted above, I had the unique opportunity to live for five years as a Faculty Head of House on the Vanderbilt University undergraduate campus, in Hank Ingram House, the largest of ten first year student houses. My family and I lived in parallel with the 300 students also in the House, and we were responsible for leadership development of the student staff, administration of the House council, and regular social and educational programming. In that capacity, I have also served as a panelist in multiple presentations and was invited to present on two occasions to the Vanderbilt University Board of Trust. I was selected to be a 2017-18 Chancellor’s Higher Education Fellow, and this program is ongoing. The program will provide an overview and understanding of higher education in general, Vanderbilt specifically, and includes the culture, policies, and decision-making processes that make up Vanderbilt. I will complete a project that promotes the Chancellor’s strategic priorities for the University. Secondary School Learners: Prior to medical school, I was a teacher and coach for three years at a private boarding school, St. Andrew’s School, in Middletown, Delaware. In addition to living with the students, I taught the AP Biology course, AP Environmental Science, and introductory chemistry class to sophomores. As a coach, I was the head coach of both the girls tennis and basketball teams, securing a State Runner-Up title for the tennis team and the first playoff berth in the state tournament in many years for the basketball team. Formal Mentoring: Note: My position as program director necessitates that I am a mentor to all residents within our program. I meet with all residents every 6 months and some more frequently. Many involve
