AA lot has been happening at the club so I want to bring everyone up-to-date:
The paddle tennis, racquet ball courtsand squash court have hit a temporarysetback. There is an 8 water main thatfeeds eleven houses in the Kenwoodneighborhood and WSSC will not cap thelines even though the eleven houses arefeed by other lines. We are now requestingthat WSSC move the water main offKenwood property; this will enable us touse the area behind the indoor tennis courtsto build the facility.
FROM THE PRESIDENT

Editors: Nancy D. RudyPatsy Weaver
On a better note, the borings whichhave been completed on the golf courseleads Kenwood to believe that we have hit ahuge amount of water. We are now going toapply for a permit to do a 72 hour test onthe well to see if it can sustain the flow ofwater that we need.
Hopefully, all will go as planned, butwe are well aware that there are manythings that can prevent the lakes fromtaking place; approval from the county cantake up to one year.
Please take a moment to look at thegolf course diagram; feedback is alwayswelcome and encouraged, so please, passon your comments and suggestions to therelevant Committee Representatives. Ifeverything is approved and we can moveforward, we could possibly start this projectin November and have it completed byApril 2011. The Golf and the Green
Committees have seen the plans and are intotal agreement that the the lakes willenhance Kenwood’s golf course.
I share these details with you, not toburden you with the multiple challenges, but out of a sense of your ownership ofthese projects. We move forward togetheron these projects and together we willcelebrate and enjoy the golf course lakesand paddle tennis courts when they arecompleted. It is funny how, now that wehave our beautiful Fitness Center, all thechallenges we faced along the way seem soeasily managed. So it will be with ourstunning new lakes and our state-of-the-artpaddle tennis facilities.
In the meantime, come join me as Irelax on the patio and think about all theexciting things going on at Kenwood andenjoy a nice cool beverage.

II n April this Column described the BOG’s primary responsibil-ities and outlined how it is
organized, through its Committees, to carrythem out. One such responsibility is torepresent the membership to Managementon an ongoing basis. That includesfacilitating members’ concerns andsuggestions about the Club’s existingfacilities and programs, usually routed
through the Comment/Suggestion boxes inthe Fitness Center and the Clubhouse andon the Club’s web site. However, ifmembers’ ideas relate to something on abigger scale, such as the possibility of anew program or facility, the best way topromote it may be to get it into the Cub’slong term planning process. The BOGparticipates in that process through its LongRange Planning Committee. PresentlyChaired by Mr. Jim Kasab, that Committeeevaluates practical ideas for capital projectsas well as significant maintenance issueswhich are brought to its attention. Potentialprojects are ranked according to depth ofmember interest, potential usage, feasibilityand available funds. So, when membershave ideas of a grander scale the best way
to promote them is to contact Mr. Kasabdirectly or one of the Chairs of the ActivityCommittees (Bowling, Fitness, Golf,House, Swim & Dive or Tennis). The ideashould be formally presented via an emailor letter, with a request that the idea beconsidered for inclusion in the Club’splanning process. Ideas, which make theLRP Committee’s cut, are forwarded toManagement for their consideration. Noguarantee, but at least your idea is out thereand, as they say, is run up the flag pole tosee who salutes. Bottom line – we need toknow your thoughts and ideas for us to helppromote them. ★

WWhat is so rare as a day in May/June – then if ever come perfect days” – well,
more of the perfect than the truly horrific,as in windy, wet and freezing, which waswhat we faced for the first mini M/G eventwhich had a field of 44 well wrapped uplady golfers who made the best of the chill, raging winds to produce good results. There was a truly slow pace issue on theday. The scorecards included a timeschedule for finishing every hole and thematch, but the whole match took five plushours to complete. In fact, by the time thescores were turned in and tabulated, it wastoo late for the results to be included in theThursday Washington Post. We had helpfrom the pro shop, which managed to getthe results in the Saturday Washington Post!
Regarding the slow play issue, I willmake the suggestion that we not micro-manage every shot – lets NOT stand behindthe ball, or the putt forever in hopes ofengineering a miracle. We are having acontest starting now, so please submit allsuggestions for ways to STOP SLOWPLAY, these will be included in futurecolumns, and of course there are fabulousprizes for those which are printed.
On a positive note, Kenwood course isin really good condition – and the curtainsof blowing pollen are really remarkable –Europe may have its volcanic ash, but wehave pollen. We also want to welcome newmembers to our program and we encouragethem to come out for everything – recentnew members are Karen Gonzales, JillHillman and Kathleen Norris. As always, thanks to the Executive Board membersand Chairs of all activities for making ourprogram work well and be so enjoyable.
We have events to announce andpromote and results of recent happenings tocelebrate. Interclub play, which is not forthe timid, is in mid-season and we willfollow up on that next month – please knowthat we are well represented out there.
Results for the Mini M/G are: 1stplace team – Joyce O’Brien, Judy Perry,Betty Churchill and Sally Seawright – 2ndplace team – Shakun Dhir, ManjulikaGhosh, Reeti Bedi, and Sunita Kaul – in3rd place were Karen Gonzales, KathleenNorris, Kelly Sullivan and Gina Rachin –4th place team was Tami McMinn, LindaSmith, Ginny Martin, and SandraTownsend. The straightest member drive onhole 18 was made by Tami (thus destroyingyours truly early effort), and guest SallyHerren had a winning shot.
Member Kelly Sullivan, and guestSarah Watson won the closest to the pin onhole 13. Results for the Cinco de MayoRyder Cup event, with a small field on aperfect day, with play moving at a FASTpace – think 4 hours and 20ish minutes, were that the orange team won – this
included Carolyn Clewell, Ann Ittner, DebiBrawner, Iola Abood, Joanie Golden andAlice Dewys. The Black team did scorepoints too. All players enjoyed a barbequelunch outside on the roof.
Scheduled events for June and laterare: June 6 Women on the weekend – signup in the pro shop, foursomes will be madeup and the format announced. The seasonlong Thompson 4 Ball (see ladder on thebulletin board) first round must becompleted by mid June – so schedule yourmatch. The Board of Governors match willbe played on July 14, please sign up asindividuals, pairings made by the Golfshop; flights, trophy and prizes and lunchoutside. The two round Chamberlin eventwill take place on June 16 and 23, twopersons sign-up teams, flights, trophy andprizes and lunch on the 23rd.
Of course the big June event is theannual M/G, which will be played on June9. The evening before, on June 8, there willbe a putting contest (fabulous prizes)followed by a cocktail party. Ladies, line upyour guests and make your appearance. There will be a breakfast buffet and a galalunch and prizes galore. Come join the fun!

TT he Kenwood Seniors’ golfing events began with a successful Opening Day event, and then
rolled merrily on.On April 13, the Kenwood Seniors
held their OPENING DAY SCRAMBLE,with 38 golfers playing on this rainy day.The intermittent rains intensified late in theround, and the horn eventually sounded theend of play.
Every group had played at least 11holes, so Assistant Pro Steve Papanek (thescorecard and GolfNet software wizard)laboriously calculated the winners based onthe teams’ strokes under par for the 11holes each group played. The followingSeniors overcame the rain and drove theirfoursomes to the top of the leader board:
1ST – BILL HALL, PAT PELLERIN,MARK SANDSTROM and DAVEWARD, net -1
2ND – EARL GAYLER, ROGERHALBARDIER, MIKE MAHONEYand JOE WERNER, -1

Chairman Mike Urquhart beganthe home mixer season with a new formatat this event – two flights, divided in halfby handicap – with winning teams in eachflight. TT he trend of sunshine and great golf conditions on Thursday mornings continued into May.
Our Peoria Tournament on the 6th attracteda field of fifteen competitors. Handicaps forthis event were determined by the scores onthree “secret” holes which were notrevealed until after the tournament (#15, 16and 17). This is the one format where it isactually advantageous to have one or twobad holes, provided they are the right ones.Shelley Davis had a string of “5’s” on herscorecard until she hit #16, giving her afirst place finish with a score of 32.Madeleine Schaller almost blew it bymaking birdie on #15, but managed to holdon to second place with a score of 35.Sharon Stoliaroff and Ruth Crone wereclose behind in a tie for third with 36.
Thirty-two Niners submittedscorecards during the month of April. The“fairways in regulation” bonus contestfound ten vying for top honors and thewinner was decided by the “mysteryfairway” challenge on April 29. Twofairways were selected—the one that hadthe most hits in April (#14) and #15 whichtied with #13 as being the hardest to find.Natalie DeVol found them both, earning
“Player of the Month” honors and a $5 golfshop credit. The long bombers who hadtrouble finding fairways in April are incontention for May’s “greens in par”contest, which will be reported on in thenext newsletter.
The interclub team matches and seasonlong Azalea Bowl tournament began inMay. To prepare for play, about twentyNiners gave up an afternoon of sunshine forlunch in the Fireside Room with AssistantPro Lynne Hunter, who educated us on therules of golf with special focus on matchplay. Kenwood Niners, paired withBethesda County Club, field a team in theMaryland-Virginia Team Match Association(MVTMA). There are three “A” and three“B” matches this season for players withnine hole handicap indexes in the ranges of5 to 16.5 and 16.5 to 23.5 respectively.Kenwood will be hosting one of the B teammatches on Tuesday, June 22. There areseveral other opportunities for Niners of allhandicap levels to play away courses. Thesign-up sheet for the six MVTMAInvitationals is in the golf shop.Additionally, we have been invited to playat both Manor and Lakewood in September.
Our first “mini” member/guest day ison June 3, which will be a “Bingo, Bango,Bongo” Tournament. Strings of beads willbe awarded for being first on the green, closest to the pin and first in the cup foreach of the nine holes; beads can be used towin prizes at the end of the tournament.Niners may each invite one guest to attend,or can sign up as an individual and the golfshop will make the pairings.
Also in June is our Thompson FourBall, a trophy tournament. Sign up as twoperson teams; golf shop will assign tee
times. Round one will be Thursday, June 10and the second round will be the followingweek, June 17.
Finally, the Ringers, Putters & Playersbonus contest for June will be for “twoputts or less”. Earn one point for every holewhere you have no more than two putts;chipping in from off the green earns threepoints. It’s never too late to get into thegame!
Play more golf, count your putts andwatch your scores drop! ★

TThe mixed golf season got off to a great start with the May 2Isabelle Kelly May Bowl

The team of Mikeand Sue Mitchell and Jeff and Sue Werthantook first place on the 19th hole. Ted andDebi Brawner, Mark Yecies and EllenRoche came in second. At 2 strokes back, third place went to the foursome of Joanneand Jack Valdez, Amanda Weathersby andTom Paci.

WHAT’S ALL THE RACKET(continued from page 9)
some of the most fun he had on the courtwas playing matches with his father.Initially, Chris’ dad had to “carry” him onthe court, but over time the tables turnedand Chris carried his dad. It was Chris’father who taught him how to play tennis.
Chris and Donna have been marriedfor 28 years and have two children, Jeff(age 22) and Jenny (age 20).
Chris says that the most importantlesson he can teach his students is to havefun on the court. “If you’re not having fun,
why play? I still get a rush after 38 years ofteaching when a student understands what Iam saying and they do what I’m asking andit works, then they get this smile on theirface saying they get it. That’s what anyteacher lives for.”
Chris’s CornerWhen making the poach in doubles
after your partner serves, make your movewhen your opponent starts their swing andmake sure you move diagonally toward the
center net strap. If you do this you willintercept the ball sooner and be closer tothe net for the put away. If you poachstraight across you will have to go furtherto get the ball and will be more likely to geta low ball. Remember move forward at anangle not across.

SUMMER CAMP
By Nancy Darcey Rudy
SS olstice comes from the Latin (sol, sun; sistit, stands). For several days before and after
each solstice, the sun appears to stand stillin the sky—that is, its noontime elevationdoes not seem to change.
The solstice begins June 21, 2010 at11:43 Greenwich Mean Time or GMT.Although some still celebrate MidsummerDay on 24th June.
In the northern hemisphere, the longestday of the year is near June 22 when theSun is farthest north. The decline of theSun on the northern Summer Solstice isknown as the Tropic of Cancer. TheSummer Solstice is the longest day of theyear in the sense that the length of timeelapsed between sunrise and sunset on thisday is a maximum for the year.
Many pagans of various persuasionsview Summer Solstice as one of the mostimportant events of the year, and make apoint of getting together with family andfriends to celebrate, often outdoors.
Celebration of midsummer takes placein many countries and stems from ancienttimes with the solstice celebration itselfdating from Neolithic times.
Traditions around the world differgreatly, often linked to local legend andhistory. In the UK some of the oldtraditions, such as the lighting of bonfires, have been revived, but the most significantcelebrations continue to be in Sweden, where they involve such things as dancingaround a Maypole, eating the first potatoes, pickled herring, soured cream andstrawberries of the year, and, for some, theexcessive drinking of alcohol.
This ritual is used to complete externalphysical displays and all energies are aboutexerting the need for change. In ancienttimes it was considered a time of fullnessof life, worldly blessings and celebration. Not much has changed today in how welook at summer. We see it as a time ofvacations, play, celebration, fun, laughter,
parties, and barbecues with family andfriends at the beach or park. Days arelonger which gives us more time to enjoythe sun and soak in its warmth.
The Summer Solstice celebrates thejoy, warmth and laughter of summer. Thebeginning of summer represents a time forpurification, renewal of the self, a time torelease the sadness, fears and pains fromyour life. It is a time for purification andrenewed energy.
The Sun exerts its’ maximum power atthe Solstice because the tilt of the Earth’saxis makes the Sun’s rays most nearlyparallel on that date at points in theNorthern hemisphere. The time is here tocomplete external physical manifestationand all energies are about exerting the will.In ancient times it was considered a time offullness of life, worldly blessings andcelebration. Not much has changed today inhow we look at summer. ★
