Undergraduate Learning at a Research Institute

IISc will provide an inquiry-based learning experience

in an environment in which high-quality research is

    practiced and valued.

Active researchers will bring the excitement of doing

    science into their teaching.

Students will have exposure to contemporary research

at a relatively early stage of their career.

The project in the fourth year of the BS programme will

Interdisciplinary Nature of the BS Programme

Contemporary research is increasingly multi-disciplinary innature and modern industry requires personnel with expertisein a variety of fields. The BS programme of IISc will prepare thestudents for exciting career opportunities by providing a solid

foundation in all areas of science and specialization in aspecific field.

Compulsory basic courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, engineering and humanities in the first 3 semesters.

Option of choosing a major and a minor in different subjects. Two major streams (Materials and Environmental Science)

that are intrinsically multi-disciplinary in nature.Opportunity to do the 4th-year project in an interdisciplinary area.

First 4-year BS Programme in India

The material taught in the present 3-year BSc + 2-year MSccourses can be covered quite well in four years if repetitionsare avoided.

A 4-year BS course will bring parity between undergraduate

    programmes in science and engineering.

Several expert panels constituted for finding ways to improvescience education in India have recommended the introductionof 4-year BS programmes. The 4-year format is expected tobecome the norm in the near future.

Graduates of the 4-year programme will be eligible for allcareer opportunities that are currently available to students

    with MSc degrees in science.

IISc and almost all IITs admit students with bachelor degreesin their PhD programmes in engineering. Therefore, BSgraduates will be eligible for joining Masters and PhDprogrammes in engineering. Qualification in GATE may berequired for admission in some Institutes.

BS graduates will be eligible for admission in PhDprogrammes in science departments after qualifying in anappropriate examination such as CSIR-NET.

B.S. graduates will be eligible for admission in PhDprogrammes abroad because most universities abroadrequire 10+2+4 years of study.
