Originally inhabited by Khoisan peo-
ples, the region of what is now
Zambia was reached by the Bantu
expansion by ca. the 12th century.
After visits by European explorers
starting in the 18th century, Zam-
bia became the British colony of
Northern Rhodesia towards the end
of the nineteenth century. On 24
October 1964, the country declared
independence from the United King-
dom and prime minister Kenneth
Kaunda became the first head of
state. The World Bank in 2010
named Zambia as one of the
world's fastest economically reform-
ing countries.
Ondine Chadwick recently visited
Zambia with her family and spoke
to EEK! about their experience in
Africa.

So why Zambia and why was it so great? So many reasons but the main one is the exceptional
game viewing without the crowds found at the more popu-
lar East African game parks.
Having done a few African safaris we are now addicted and
have become BIG cat junkies. We chose the South
Luangwa National Park primarily for its concentration of
leopards, night drives (to improve our
chances) and also for its variety of game
and birds.
The park (and especially the camp we
stayed with) is a wildlife photographer’s
dream come true with a variety of
ways to get very up close and personal with
animals. We gave ourselves every opportu-
nity to see game from the vehicle, on foot,
in the hides, on the plains, in the forests,
along the river and at the lagoons. Sadly,
poaching still happens but wildlife protection
and anti-poaching initiatives have enabled
the populations of big game to improve.
The guides (mostly Zambian) have uncanny eyesight and
impressive knowledge. Each outing unfolds with informa-
tion about the resident game, birds and flora. Our guide
Meyhan did so much to ensure we got great sightings and
incredible photos. It was exciting to look and listen for
signs to track predators, inch closer to beautiful birds and
sit just meters away from wild animals.
The park is so renowned for it concentration of game that
multiple film crews have visited the park for documentaries
on the yellow baboons, crocodiles and lions. The Holly-
wood Pride and its three males Metro, Goldwyn and Mayer
are nick named from such visits.
Where to stay? There is something for all budgets in the area. We stayed
again at Shenton Safaris two sites: Mwamba Bush Camp
and Kaingo Camp. Both a 2-3 hour drive from the closest
airport town of Mfwue, well within the National Park and
away from neighbouring camps. This is a very special
place that is inaccessible in the wet season and teaming
with game in the winter. Don’t be fooled by ‘bush’ camp –
it’s just more remote and within a wildlife corridor.
This is luxury safari folks (no pitching of tents, cold show-
ers or flapping of plates) and a small price to pay for the 5
star chalets, location, exceptional guides, service and se-
clusion. The tariff is all inclusive with a portion given to
Project Luangwa to manage community aid. ...PTO

Excited to arrive, and sad to leave Our latest Zambian safari is hard to believe! Spotting Elliott, the one-eyed leopard, in the sun, started 12 days of amazing game viewing to stun Lions and hyenas we could not ignore, passing through the camp, heard over the snore 10 leopards in all, some up the tree, made baboons bark and flee, one took flight to the ground - an unforgettable sight and sound. The daily Ele parade on display crossing the river around midday A limping lion with a sore paw, a new born Puku and a bleeding Chameleon we saw! Watched the Mwamba pride of twenty, all the BIG cats were a-plenty There was more to see, Pel’s Fishing Owl, Wild Dog and Serval, others heard with envy! A rewarding day with the kids we had, singing and dancing – they must have thought we were mad! Smiling faces looked after us well, too much good food, the mirror did tell! Spots, stripes and memories galore, more – we could not ask for!

What do you do on safari? Here’s a typical safari day:
5.30am
Wake to drums for a quick cuppa and cake.
6.00am
Morning Game drive with up to six people in an open,
tiered 4X4. Stop along the way for another cuppa around
8am. (Instead of a drive you could do a walk, we decided
to do the 3hour walk from Mwamba to Kaingo when we
moved across and saw a leopard leap from a tree on the
way.)
9.30am
Return to camp for a full cooked breakfast before a hot
shower and some free time.
12.00pm
Midday day activity: drive to nearby lagoon to watch the
animals/birds come into drink and wash or visit one of the
many ‘hides’ to watch hippos play, birds roost or an ele-
phant family cross the river.
1.30pm
Light lunch and drinks before some quiet time to write
your diary, read or have a nanna nap.
3.30pm
Drums sound for afternoon cuppa and
cake on the deck overlooking the river.
4.00pm
Afternoon game drive. Stop along the way
for sundowners.
7.30pm
Return to camp for a three course dinner,
open bar and stories.
How to get there? You need to get to the
Zambian capital Lusaka
and then take a regional
carrier to Mfuwe. It took
us about 24 hours and four
flights from Kuwait. There
are a number of options; it
just depends on your time
and budget.
Ondine and Peter are Aus-
tralians and lived in Kuwait
for 3 years. Ondine has
been fund raising for
Hanada Orphanage and
now Project Luangwa for
the past four years.

Tips for an African safari holiday: * Decide on your budget, what you want to see and do - there is
something for everyone. * Do your research and choose your season carefully for game and
bird viewing. There can be small windows during the year to see certain things. For example, there is a better chance of seeing a leopard during the day in the winter months but kills and large game at rivers are more likely as water holes dry up.
* Take insect repellent, hat, old clothes, binoculars and a camera. * Check specific vaccinations for each country. * If you can’t live without your mobile phone, TV, hair dryer or an
internet connection a bush camp is not for you. Do it at least once - you won’t regret it!

Kuwait Telecommunications Company Viva,
announced late July this year, its official
five season sponsorship agreement with the
2011 Premier League Champions, Manches-
ter United Football Club, bringing local Red
Devil fans closer to Old Trafford. Manches-
ter United recently broke the record in
terms of Premier League trophies by secur-
ing their nineteenth title, making them the
most successful football club ever in the
history of English football.
Announcing the sponsorship, Viva Kuwait
CEO Salman Al-Badran stated, "Viva is hon-
oured to embark on this historic partnership
with Manchester United, and very excited to
kick-off the 2011-2012 season with an en-
tertaining agenda full of promotions, active-
ties and surprises for Viva customers, foot-
ball fans, and most importantly, Manchester
United fans."
Referring to the surprises, Al-Badran hinted
that "Customers and fans can expect Viva
to provide subscribers with a number of
opportunities to win unique experiences
during the coming season, including all-
inclusive trips to great games at Old Traf-
ford." "We will be launching a variety of
new promotions and products and services,
as well as offer gifts, host entertaining
games, initiate interactive competitions,
and set up mall activities to provide our
customers with chances to watch the Red
Devils on their home turf," Al-Badran said.
Kuwait plans to build highways costing
about 1.7 billion dinars ($6.2 billion)
over the next three and a half years as
it seeks to become a commercial and
financial hub in the region.
“Ministry of Public Works is currently de-
signing highways that will be tendered in
the coming three and a half years, one af-
ter the other, for a cost of 1.7 billion dinars
and a total length of 550 kilometres (340
miles),” Minister of Public Works Fadhel
Safar said in a telephone interview today in
Kuwait City.
Parliament in February 2010 approved a
30.8 billion-dinar, four-year development
plan that aims to lure international inves-
tors and includes projects to increase oil
and gas production and construction of a
railway network, cities and a port on
Boubyan Island.
In October last year, the state’s Central
Tenders Committee said a group led by
Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co.
made the lowest bid to design, build, oper-
ate and maintain a bridge for 738.8 million
dinars ($2.6 billion).
Jaber Al-Ahmad bridge, one of the country’s
biggest infrastructure projects, will link the
mainland to Subbiya in the north. The con-
tract then got “dragged into political con-
flicts” Vice Chairman Raad al-Abdullah of
Combined Group Contracting Co. (CGC),
which has a stake 20 percent stake in the
bid, said on June 9.
The economy of Kuwait, which holds the
world’s fifth- largest oil reserves, suffers
from a “number of structural imbalances”
that require the “correction” of the state’s
budget position and measures to promote
the private sector’s contribution to growth,
the state’s ruler Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-
Jaber Al-Sabah said on Aug. 15, according
to state run news agency KUNA.
Kuwait was the fourth-biggest producer,
along with the United Arab Emirates, in the
Organization of Petroleum Exporting Coun-
tries in July. The country produced 2.52
million barrels of oil a day on average, ac-
cording to Bloomberg data.

Due to my outgoing (haha) nature,
and forever saying things about
stuff that I shouldn’t, I mailed EEK!
last week after I saw the Ramadan
fish and chips ad. “What about I
write you guys a review and you
pay for my meal” I wrote and in their usual
dry wit the reply came back “OK”.
Now I must still get my KD5 from them,
and I’m sure I will - Eid came as a bit of a
surprise to all of us so the planned money
exchange meeting didn’t happen. So there I
was, some time late at night on the last eve
of Ramadan - “you better movit or you’ll
miss the special” - driving around looking
for Organica’s outlet and low and behold, I
actually found them! For me, that’s an
achievement! BUT, with all the driving
a.k.a. wasting time, they were already
closed and I was convinced I was out of my
hard bargained KD5 EEK! deal. (before I
forget, they are kind of halfway between
the Hilton resort and Alkout Mall, on Gulf
road inbetween the longer established
apartment buildings.)
So I decided to back track the next after-
noon, this is now the first day of Eid, and
found them super easy. You know when
you go to a new place the first time, it feels
like you’re traveling forever? Well, I can
gladly report that they are actually perfectly
located. Look out for their unique neon
signage on the roof. So yes, I found them
and bravely walked up to the entrance door
with the line “do you still have the Rama-
dan special that you advertised in EEK!” in
my head. So, reaching the counter, I spoke
my mind and a super friendly (but NOT
tacky friendly as you often find here in Ku-
wait) young lady answered “Yes M’am, KD5
for fish, chips, a salad, cold drink....”we
also have the special for EID.” “YES that’s
the one” I confirmed and took out my fiver.
“Its OK M’am” she responded, it will take a
few minutes to prepare, please have a seat.
Do you want a take out or sit down meal
M’am?”
This was awesome. I was enjoying every
second of this “out of Kuwait” experience. I
mean, you couldn’t even smell the usual
fish oil or fat or whatever café’s usually use
to prepare fish in. “I’ll ermmm…” and mid
sentence decided” I’ll have it here thank
you.” I never, neeeevuuuuh, do sit downs
unless if its is a restaurant setting. But I
wanted to do this here, now. It was then
that I noticed (realized?) how much effort
had gone into the interior design of this
little place and how damn detailed it was!
Honestly, I’m not going to bore you with
words, and words just won’t do it justice,
but believe me, it’s super! My bums had
barely landed on the comfy bistro type
chairs when a serving of lemonade was
handed to me. And let me be very, very
clear, this is proper L E M O N-ade. With
lots of ice. Brilliant!

“Sweetheart can I ask if my chips can stay
longer in the oil?” I asked. “Certainly M’am,
you want it more crispy right? You are from
Australia M’am?” No I’m not, but if my
chips aren’t crispy, I’ll probably shout and
scream so that they’ll hear me in Australia.
Now I’ve tried to get my fries/chips extra
crispy at two or three places in my few
short years in Kuwait, and they always get
it wrong. This place knew what I wanted,
and they knew how to prepare it. And there
I sat, lemonade in my hand, and a big wry
smile on my face. How cool is this little
joint? LUVIT!
A couple of minutes later my order arrived
in a wax papered dark orange woven rattan
bowl, or rather basket. This thing was
huge, a medium sized table flower decora-
tion would fit very tight, and its was packed
with a load of chips, loads of fish (probably
about 7-8 pieces of fish “strips”, large
chunks of lightly battered fish), two small
tubs of freshly prepared home made tartare
sauce - CHUNKY tartare - a few slices of
lemon neatly presented on a short bamboo
stick and a fairly large serving of garden
salad.
OK, so I can’t tell you what all of this tasted
like, except that it was gorgeous, super
fresh, prepared and presented with pride,
and a massive amount of it! Long story
short, I could not even finish half of the
serving even thought I so wanted to, it was
simply to much. So, in my savings con-
scious expat mind I’m like “hey, you just
bought two of the best fish & chips meals
ever for KD2.5 each!” I asked if it was pos-
sible for me to have a take home bag. “Of
course M’am, do you need extra tartare
sauce or salad dressing?”. I was still smil-
ing, how did she know I wanted more tar-
tare sauce? A minute or two later my
“second meal” was brought to me in their
distinct large white bags. I mean honestly,
this is a classy outfit, and allow me to say,
one of very few eating experiences where I
got stuffed to my heart’s content (I know
it’s bad journalism to use the word “stuffed”
by I’m not a journalist haha).
Dear EEK!er’s, get out there, get yourself
some of Organica’s F&C, and be happy.
They really, really do things differently.
Kym deserves her KD5, and then some. If
you feel you can contribute to your EEK! e-
mag, please let us know on
[email protected] with your
ideas or suggestions. Ed.

Ants
We mentioned ants and cockroaches in last week‘s Editor’s Note due to a
change in the weather. Talking to some people during the week, believe it
or not but ants is a social topic during seasonal changes, the usual state-
ment being made “I just don’t know where they come from, they’re every-
where.”
Well, that’s true, they are everywhere. One of the reasons is that walls of-
ten have cavities in them, and that’s where ants nest. It is very difficult to
see the holes through which these little irritants move. On the photo
(arrowed, left) is one of those holes, a big one by their standards!
The problem of course is the difficulty in finding where the nest is. So next
time, before you grab the can and blast the living daylights out of them,
spend some time and see where the ant trial leads (right). That’s where
you fight them best, in the nest.
One of the best ways of combating these little guys - other than spending
tones of money and effort through professional means - is to get this nifty
nozzled can (pic left). It works at most angles, has an adjustable nozzle
with about 6 inches reach, and offers a nice solid blast into the holes. Do
take care though. If it’s a shallow hole the poison can easily spray back into
your face or hands so give it a few short bursts before you lay in and dump
half a gallon of it into the nest.

A hundred and thirty years after being hanged for the murder of three policemen in Old Melbourne Gaol, the remains of rouge ganman Ned Kelly has been identi-fied. Researchers from the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine have announced that, after an prolonged 20-month search that included testing of more than 30 skeletons, Kelly's remains have been positively identi-fied. The discovery was made by matching DNA from Kelly's sister's great grandson, Leigh Oliver, with remains found in a mass grave in Pentridge Prison in Melbourne. The al-most-complete skeleton, found in an un-marked wooden box, has bullet wounds on the elbow, thigh and foot, injuries sustained in the minutes before Kelly was captured by authorities on 28 June 1880. He was 25.

Ned Kelly's death mask in the Old
Melbourne Gaol.
A death mask is a plaster cast made of a
person’s face following death. They were
made for a variety of reasons, including
mementos for family members or be
used for creation of portraits.
Heath Ledger stars in the 2003 movie Ned Kelly. The film portrays the life of Ned Kelly — the legendary bush-ranger in northeast Victoria. Ned, his brother Dan, and two other men — Steve Hart and Joe Byrne — formed a gang of Irish Australians in response to Irish and English tensions that arose in 19th century Australia. The 2003 version is a remake of the 1906 The Story of the Kelly Gang which is recognized in the film industry as the first feature film ever made. It was noted that even with a pardon, which had a petition of over 30,000 signatures, Ned Kelly was sentenced to death and hanged at Old Melbourne Gaol on 11 November 1880.

Because of the restric-

Constable Arthur fired three times, hitting Kelly once in the helmet and
twice in his body, but despite staggering from the impacts he continued to

lower limbs, however, were unprotected, and when 15
metres (49 ft) from the police line he was shot repeatedly in the legs. As
he fell he was hit by a shotgun blast that injured his hip and right hand.”

When dreams come true…
Bentley’s Continental GTC convertible goes into its second-generation form next month, when the car makes its debut in
Frankfurt. The drop-top, which replaces the current model that was introduced in 2006, will feature cues from its GT
coupe sibling launched last year. The all-wheel drive system features a new 40:60 rear torque bias (compared with
50:50 of the original GTC), minimising understeer during hard cornering and allowing the spirited driver to manage the
car’s line and balance via precise throttle control. The new GTC’s cabin features additional rear legroom, new storage
solutions and current faves such as touch-screen infotainment, automatic seat-belt presenters, Naim for Bentley
premium audio and a Bentley-designed Neck Warmer for comfortable roof-down motoring.

A New Social Music Sharing and Discovery Service Waterloo, ON - Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced BBM™ Music, a new BBM (BlackBerry® Messenger) service for socially connected music fans. BBM Music is an easy-to-use cloud-based service that enables social and viral music discovery by allowing users to build an evolving, community-based music library that is shared amongst their BBM Music friends. The size of the music library continues to grow as new friends join the commu-nity and each user can select music from a catalog with millions of songs from leading music com-panies - Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI. Key features of BBM Music include: * Music made social – BBM Music is a cloud-based, social music service that allows you to share and discover music with your friends, creating a continually evolving music library: - Build a personal music profile with 50 of your favorite songs. You can refresh your profile by swapping out up to 25 songs each month. - Invite your BBM friends to subscribe to BBM Music and to join your BBM Music Community. - With each friend that is added to BBM Music, you grow your music collection since the songs from the profile of each BBM Music friend are available to you at any time. - Up to 50 tracks from your personal profile are shared with your BBM Music Community, and each member of your community shares up to 50 songs from their profile with you. - Enjoy a truly social community-based music experience – the more friends who join your commu-nity, the more songs you can listen to. - Easily discover music that your BBM Music friends are listening to, and comment on your friends’ songs and playlists. - You can create multiple playlists from music in your profile as well as all of your friends’ profiles, and with one click you can shuffle the entire collection of music from your BBM Music Community. You can even see which friend contributed each song while it plays. - Within your BBM Music app, you also see a visual timeline that shows the recent updates of all users within your community. It gives you a chronological view of community updates, including who added new friends, which songs were added or removed, which playlists were created and what comments were made by your BBM Music friends. * Listen to Full Tracks - BBM Music subscribers can listen to full tracks from their friends’ profiles – not just previews. * Offline Listening - Music can be saved to smartphones for offline listening, allowing users to access songs even when they don’t have wireless coverage. * Topping the Charts – Keep track of how many friends are listening to your tracks. For more information about BBM Music, and to sign up to be notified of its availability in your coun-try, please visit www.blackberry.com/bbmmusic. Pricing may vary by country and will be announced upon availability in each country. Data charges may apply if music is downloaded over wireless networks in conjunction with limited data plans. Check with your network operator for the terms of your data plan.

Kuwait – Harley-Davidson Middle East and North Africa (MENA), a subsidiary of Harley-Davidson Europe, Middle East and Africa, the world’s leading manufacturer of heavy-weight motorcycles, today announced that they will be introducing an Open House Day within every country in the MENA region on Sept 17, 2011, under the name of “Make Every Day Count”. The Open House Day will introduce the new H-D Model Year Bikes for
2012 in Kuwait and which will allow both riders and non-riders to experience the true spirit of Harley-Davidson at dealerships across the Middle East. "We fulfil the dreams of thousands of customers, in MENA every year; and our customers are the biggest group of friends in the world. It’s great to see that we are giving all riders in MENA the chance to share our friendship on September 17th 2011 for
a great cause and to celebrate the arrival of our 2012 motorcycles. It’s not just an invite for all riders of all motorcycles but for any-one out there who wants to contribute!” says Paul De Jongh, Country Manager MENA. Additionally, under the umbrella of “Make Every Day Count”, Harley-Davidson’s MENA office and the United Nations World Food Programme will be teaming up in their first-ever region-wide charity endeavour; and will donate all the proceeds from selected merchandise sales at the event to the im-poverished women around the world. Ashraf Hamouda, Head of Partnership & Business Development of WFP for the Mid-dle East, North Africa and Gulf region, in-sists on the strategic need to empower women in order to reach out to their chil-dren and surrounding communities: “Women in impoverished countries have less access to education and income and less decision-making power than men. Mothers that suffer from these extenuating circumstances represent a direct danger to the lives of their children, especially if they are pregnant. On the other hand, by breastfeeding their youngest children and often being the ones handling farming, women play a key role in the fight against hunger.” ...PTO

From the previous page:
“WFP’s efforts to improve women’s access
to food and sustainable living capitalizes on
professional training and employment,
while taking into consideration their distinct
needs and requirements. Our partnership
with Harley-Davidson is a great opportunity
to raise awareness of our innovative pro-
grams in support of women empowerment
across the Middle East and North Africa, in
the spirit of sharing and adventure.”
“Make Every Day Count” is Harley-
Davidson’s unique Open House Day con-
cept, The Open House will also act as a
platform to introduce the new range of
Harley-Davidson motorcycles for 2012, in-
cluding the new Dyna Switchback, as well
as the new Sportster, Softail, Touring and
CVO, all in the support of the global com-
munity at large.
To celebrate the launch of these new mod-
els, Harley-Davidson Europe Middle East
and North Africa thus invites the commu-
nity to participate in a ride to experience
the true spirit of brotherhood that Harley-
Davidson embodies. This spirit of brother-
hood lives strong with the participation of
the United Nations World Food Programme,
whereby sales of t-shirts produced espe-
cially for “Make Every Day Count” will help
impoverished women around the world to
stand on their feet. “Harley-Davidson is a
global icon that embodies brotherhood and
camaraderie” said Tommy Dixon, General
Manager of Harley-Davidson in Kuwait.
“This Open House invitation goes out to
everyone in Kuwait, whether Harley own-
ers, non riders or just motorcycle aficiona-
dos, to participate in this ride and enjoy a
day out with friends”.
Customers and enthusiasts that are inter-
ested in participating in this Harley-
Davidson Open House and want to experi-
ence the thrill of the open road on a Harley-
Davidson motorcycle can visit www.harley-

Excellent maid / Nanny
available for Western
expats from mid Sep ‘11 I am trying to help my maid (live out) find
work as my husband and I are leaving Ku-
wait next month after almost 5 years.
During this time Sameira (from Sri Lanka)

we are most sorry that we cannot take her
with us. She has her own visa/residency
and home, and can work full time, part
time, live in, live out - as fits your require-
ments, she is looking to work for Western /
Australian expats. If anyone would like to
discuss further / has any questions, they
