We will float the nets under the ice, and then begin ice fish-ing. The pond is rich with rainbow trout, whitefish, perch, and pike. In the midst of the fishing we will go to the lean-to shelter to have some reindeer sausages and coffee/tea/juice. Afterwards we will carry on ice fishing. The return journey will be easy as the reindeer will take the fishing equipment and our catch back to the farm. From the farm we will be transferred to Kammi building, where a soup lunch is waiting. Under the ice the rainbow trout, whitefish, grayling, and pike are all waiting to meet their match. Enjoy the tranquillity of nature and sit by the lean-to campfire listening to fishing tales about catch with eyes spaced a metre apart. The trip starts at reindeer farm where we are told about the life of the reindeer. 2. Day at Fishing Village, Ollila Holiday CottagesExperience an exciting winter day fishing with a professional fisherman at his genuine fishing spots in Kuusamo. Our basecamp is Juomuskota, the private fish restaurant at Ollila in Sossonniemi fishing village by Lake Muojärvi. While we are working, the guide tells stories about the history of Sossonniemi fishing village, and about the importance of fishing industry in our daily lives. Seine fishing in winter, Ollila Holiday CottagesWe arrive at Ollila by bus at about 10.30 and will be met by our host and hostess.After this the participants will be transferred by snowmobile sled (in groups of 8) to the lake ice, where a group of professional fishermen are waiting. While they are working the fishermen tell us about their livelihood and seine fishing in winter conditions. The fishermen may have lit a fire to keep warm, and we can make hot juice over the fire and have a tasty fish snack with it.We will join in the pulling of the seine from under the ice, until the catch finally appears and it is lifted into containers. When the fishing is done, we will head to Sossonniemi fishing village harbour where we are shown how the fishing harbour operates. Those who are willing can take part in cleaning the catch with the fishermen. We will return from the harbour to Ollila and Juomuskota around 14.00 and have a delicious fish lunch or dinner. FISHING VENUES71. Lake Kuusamojärvi, downtownKelantie 10, KuusamoN 65° 58.0003'E 29° 11.6041'A large lake located downtown Kuusamo. There are many roads lead-ing to different places on Lake Kuusamojärvi. In mid- winter, when there is a lot of snow, there is a snowmobile route and plenty of other snowmobile tracks on the ice which make walking on the lake easier. The best and easiest ice fishing spots are found at Kelantie road. Leave your car on the parking lot (Kelantie 2). The common catch fish are perch, roach, and whitefish.

53. Lake Kuusamojärvi, LahtelaLämsänkyläntie 62, KuusamoN 65° 53.2426'E 29° 19.7765'Kuusamo town maintains a lean-to shelter situated at Vanttajankan-gas. The shelter is on Lämsänkyläntie road, on the shore of Lake Kuusamojärvi. There is a separate campfire site outside the shelter. The shelter is big enough for 10 people. Inside there is a fireplace and sausage grilling equipment. The use of the shelter is free. In the shed there are one-metre long logs which the visitors can cut and chop for use. There is a toilet next to the shelter. The fishing area in front of the shelter is shallow. There are mainly small perch in this area. If you can walk a little further away, you will probably catch bigger perch and roach.

72. Lake NissinjärviKemijärventie 136, KuusamoN 66° 4.0421'E 29° 8.5038'Ice fishing venue on Highway 5 rich with ruff, roach, and perch. For several years this lake has hosted an event called National Champion-ship Competition for Ice Fishing for Ruff. There is a good parking lot right by the lake. The west end of the lake is relatively shallow. There are snowmobile tracks on the ice which make walking easier.

Ice fishing is part of Everyman’s rights in Finland. This means that you don’t need a permit for ice fishing in numerous lakes and ponds in Kuusamo. Such venues are presented below.

In some private waters a permit for ice fishing is required. These venues are mentioned last on the list below.

Please note the following matters when you go ice fishing:

• Don’t walk through private gardens.• Ice fishing is forbidden in rivers and quiet waters ex-

cluding venues especially marked for it.• Remember to beware of thin ice in places of flowing

water, e.g. inlets and mouths of rivers and creeks• When parking your car, make sure that other cars can

pass by it. Do not create an obstruction to traffic.• Parking on bus stops is forbidden.• Lake ice can be thin in places. Remember to monitor ice

thickness.• When moving on ice, it is wise to carry at least a pair of

prickers with you.• There are ski tracks and snowmobile routes on lake ice.

Walking and ice fishing on these tracks is forbidden for safety reasons.

Walking on ice and ice fishing is always done at your own risk. It is advisable to contact the fishing guides of the area to hear the latest tips on where fish shoals have been moving.

73. Lake NissinlampiKemijärventie 78, Kuusamo N 66° 1.2038'E 29° 7.8960'The small Lake Nissinlampi near Kuusamo town centre offers ice anglers mainly perch and roach. The lake is by Ruka-Kuusamo road, and the easiest access to the lake is via Kuusamo Hunting and Fish-ing Club cabins, address Kemijärventie 78. 74. Lake PenikkajärviPikkaraisentie 139, KuusamoN 65° 45.2737'E 29° 38.9948'Lake Penikkajärvi is a large lake with a rich fish population. The lake is located in South Kuusamo. The best access to the lake is by a snow-mobile route from Pikkaraisentie road. The catch is mainly perch and roach. One of the events of Kuusamo Ice Fishing Week competition is held on Lake Penikkajärvi. A lakeshore company called Penikkakarhu offers quality accommodation for anglers, address Hiltusentie 294, N 65° 45.0506' E 29° 40.4139'

75. Lake PyhäjärviKemijärventie 204, Kuusamo N 66° 7.3857'E 29° 6.8695'Rukajärventie 405, KuusamoN 66° 7.4025'E 29° 12.2753'Lake Pyhäjärvi is an easy access ice fishing venue near Ruka. You will best reach the whitefish, grayling and perch spots located in the west end of the lake via a parking area on Highway 5 (address Kemijärven-tie 204, Kuusamo). From there a fishermen’s path leads down to the lakeshore. The path follows the shoreline, so remember to be careful.

The best way to the east end of the lake is from Rukajärventie road dock (address Rukajärventie 405). The common catch at the east end is perch and whitefish.

76. Lake RukajärviMyllylahdentie 5, KuusamoN 66° 7.7128'E 29° 13.2513'The catch from this lake near Ruka is commonly perch and roach as well as whitefish. The easiest way to the lake is via Rukajärventie road and Onkerniementie road, and then to the end of Myllylahdentie road (Myllylahdentie 5). On the lakeshore there are Ruka Safaris cabins and apartments and a private restaurant (see Accommodation and Fish Delicacies).

77. Lake SaunajärviSaunajärventie 61, Kuusamo N 66° 0.6483'E 29° 8.9245'This interesting and rich ice fishing venue is located near Kuusamo town centre. You will best reach the lake from Petäjälammen Turisti-majat Holiday Cottages shore at Saunajärventie 61. The main catch from Lake Saunajärvi is perch and roach. In late winter, with a thin line and a little weighted hook (mormuska) you may catch grayling. Sometimes a vertical jig leads to a surprise appearance of a grayling! Accommodation is available in Petäjälammen Turistimajat Holiday Cottages cabins. The selection ranges from simple cabins to a very high-quality cottage completed in 2012. There is a parking lot, a campfire site and opportunity to use the lakeshore sauna (reservation required). Please beware of thin ice in places of flowing water in late winter and in spring. Please read carefully the permit terms and fishing regulations of special fishing venues before starting.

79. Lake HelilampiProfessori Räsäsentie 1-2, KuusamoLake Helilampi is stocked with rainbow trout in summer. Ice fishing for rainbow trout is permitted from December till the end of April. Ice fishers are required to collect a free season permit for Lake Helilampi from the Kuusamon Uistin Lure Shop. At the same time the fishers are instructed about the rules of fishing on Lake Helilampi. The season permit entitles you to one salmonoid per day. You are not allowed to return a rainbow trout which has been lifted on the ice into the water. You are to take it with you, and this ends your trout fishing for the day. You can fish for other species (whitefish, perch, pike) without restrictions.While ice fishing on Lake Helilampi, the use of “tip-ups” or artificial baits (pastes, artificial worms) is not allowed. Every ice fisherman is allowed to use only one rod at the time. The fish guts left from cleaning the fish must be taken away and put to the waste container.Kuusamon Uistin Lure Factory Shop and Café are situated right next to Lake Helilampi. The Factory Shop is a good place for getting the best lures for your fishing trips both in summer and in winter.

80. HossaJatkonsalmentie 6, Suomussalmi, www.hossa-kylmaluoma.fiThe small lakes of Huosiuslampi, Keihäslampi, Kirkasvetinen, and Pieni-Hossalaislampi are good ice fishing venues. Some of the lakes, e.g. Huosiuslampi and Keihäslampi near Hossa Visitor Centre, are stocked with rainbow trout. From the less visited waters of large lakes such as Iso-Valkeinen, Umpi-Valkeinen, and Pitkä-Hoilua, many real monsters have been seen to appear on the ice – trout or lake salmon of 3-5 kilos have not been rare as an ice fisherman’s catch.

It is also worthwhile to go for perch in the Hossa waters. There are nice-sized specimens in many of the lakes and ponds in the area. Starting on 15 Feb 2014, Visitor Centre is open every day from 9 to 17. Permit prices €10/3h and €15/day.Permits are sold at Visitor Centre or, after business hours, from a vending machine (coin-operated, instruc-tions in English). There is a restaurant/café and accommodation available in the area.

81.KylmäluomaPajuluomantie 20,Taivalkoski, www.hossa-kylmaluoma.fiLake Iso-Pajuluoma is stocked with rainbow trout throughout the winter, so it is an excellent venue for ice fishing. Ice fishing competition for salmon at Lake Iso-Pajuluoma in March 2014. There are cabins for hire and camping site is open all year (owner on call). Restaurant and reception are open from 15 Feb 2014 every day from 10 to 15. Permit prices €10/3h and €15/day.Permits are sold at Visitor Centre or, after business hours, from a vending machine (coin-operated, instruc-tions in English). There is a restaurant/café and accommodation available in the area.

82. Petäjälampi (Kuusamo Safaris)Kylpyläntie 5, KuusamoIce fishing venue located near Kuusamon Tropiikki Tropical Spa. Common catch is perch, whitefish and roach. 78. Lake TalvijärviHiihtostadionintie 1, KuusamoN 66° 10.3148'E 29° 8.1339'Located in the vicinity of Ruka, Lake Talvijärvi is rich with whitefish, roach and perch. From time to time the fish lurk below the double bottom of the lake, but if the moment is favourable, your catch may be abundant. Please take notice of the ski tracks and routes on the ice.There is an easy access to the lake from the shore of Hotel-Restaurant RukaTonttu. The hotel also has a spacious parking lot. You can buy snacks and rent ice fishing equipment from Ruka Gnome. A nice way to wrap up the day is to book a sauna in RukaTonttu and enjoy Fisher-man’s Dinner at the hotel restaurant. This is an easy and quick ice fishing site for families with children.
