We are living in an era of

extinction. While the loss of animalspecies and natural habitatsdisappears at an increasinglyalarming rate, traditional culturesand languages are also underthreat.

As an outgrowth ofglobalization, experts predict thatas many as 3,000 or 50% of theworld's 6,000-7,000 languagesare poised to be lost.

And, while the endemiclanguage of the Balinese BasaBali - is not extinct, it is on theendangered list of languages.

    According to the National

Science Foundation, the loss of alocal language results also in theloss of a unique intellectualtradition, local tradition andculture, and our ability tounderstand the progression ofhuman history.

The number of textsdedicated to the understandingand study of Basa Bali is limited. Inorder to help address this lack ofmaterial and encourage the studyof Balinese, www.basabali.orghas been formed backed by a U.S.registered 501(c) (3) organization

    n o t - f o r - p r o f i torganization to which donationsare tax deductable.

There are only a fewvolumes dealng with theteaching of Balinese. Thisproject will help develop thesematerials in cooperation withBalinese and Western experts inorder to encourage and maintainthe use of Balinese.

The resulting Balineselanguage materials from theproject will be based on a seriesof videos depicting dialoguesfrom everyday life in Bali. Thedialogues and accompanyingexercises will be carefullycreated to teach grammar, pronunciation, and appropriateword choice dictated by thesocial status of both the speakerand the listener. Multiple pop-upnotes will also help usersunderstand the cultural context

    of the dialogues.The program, when

completed, will be available as astand alone DVD or via theInternet. The organizers plan tomake the material available freeof charge to non pro f i torganizations and schools in Baliand at a modest fee to all othersin order to cover the expense ofupdates, maintenance andtechnical support.

World record not a tall order fo r York the Great Danewho is 97cm and still growing

HE looks like a horse - andeats about as much as onetoo - but this great danecould be set for the recordbooks. Just 13 months old,York is already 97cm tall ...and still growing.

    S o r a p i d i s h i sdevelopment that owner DaveRyan predicts the high-rise houndwill eventually beat the currentworld record of 105cm.

"I didn't expect him to bethis big when we first bought himbut I definitely think that he willgrow to be the world's biggestdog," Mr Ryan said.

"I thought calling him Yorkafter New York, as in big city, big

dog ... I thought itwas the perfect name forhim."

But don ' t le tappearances fool you.Mr Ryan, of Melbourne,

yesterday said Yorkmight seem "big andscary" but he's more likea "friendly giant and isreally calm".

York's height isn'tthe only big issue at theRyan household - there'salso the food bill. Thebeast eats 12 cups of dryfood and 1kg of chickennecks per day, whichadds up to more than$160 a week.

Yet despite the healthyappetite, he doesn't share thesame passion for exercise.

"He only needs to walkfor 20-30 minutes per day. He'sactually very lazy and likes to

sleep most of the day," Mr Ryansaid. "We used to have himinside a lot but now he spendsmost of the time outside or onhis own couch, which is a three-seater and he takes up thewhole space."

A Swiss motorist usedhis mobile phone torecord himself drivingon an autoroute nearGeneva at 320 km anhour, nearly three timesthe speed limit.

But the offence wasonly uncovered six months later

when the 28-year-oldwas questioned in another caseand investigators found theimages still on the phone.

    Some sho ts we refocused on the speedometer ofhis car, a Bentley Continental,a c c o r d i n g t o a p o l i c espokesman.

Others showed theroad, revealing where he was,

Swiss speedster trapped by his own mobile phoneand the phone's timer

recorded the date and the time --just before 3:30 in the morninglocal time last April.

Police said the driver, whom they declined to name, probably took the shots toimpress his friends. His licensewas confiscated and he is freeon bail awaiting trial.

'day again punters and welcome to the first ten dayssince the Mighty Pies got brought back to earth at theGbig game by those pesky pussy cats, and it seems

the pain is still lingering even after all those little green bottles. Bringon the new season I say. This week brings the traditional trade weekin the A.F.L so should be interesting when the dust settles and thedeals have all been concluded. They call it the silly week amongstthe teams and board rooms of the discipline and based on some of

the figures being thrown around I tend to agree. Time will tell I guess.Moving along this week I am, and you should all be, proud to be alive at this point in history aswith the passing of Mr Steve Jobs, th e C.E.O of App le this week brings to an end a very creative life ofinvention. I think most people didn't really give enough credit to this man who basically changed theway the entire world works on so many different levels. I liken it to being alive when the likes of ThomasEdison invented the light globe or the Wright Brothers took to the air in the first powered aeroplane. MrJobs revolutionized the way we all communicate and has embedded some top class technologies intoour very existence on this planet. I believe in 500 years and beyond, he will be remembered for hiscontributions to the world as with all other greats from days gone by and his legacy will be taught inclass rooms forever. A life well done Mr Jobs and I for one am proud to be alive at this point in time, andto have witnessed you working your magic. My sympathy goes out to all the people who he loved andloved him and can only imagine the issues we will see come to light over the next few years as is usualwhen a multi billionaire passes. Rest in peace Steve, your work here is done.

Ok folks I am going to finish this week's editorial in the true reason it is written, and that's to offermy take on what is the right thing to do in Bali whether you are here on holidays or living here. This weekhas seen a young man from Australia put behind bars for buying illegal drugs while here on holidays

with his family. Now let's get it straight for the last heap of years we have all seen the episode called theCorby case and have had it rammed down our throats on Australian television for the same amount ofyears and still this young fellow seems to have forgotten about that. He has clearly checked his bags inat the airport and checked his brains out at the same time. He has hit the streets and actively looked tobuy some drugs for some extra enjoyment while here with his mum and dad and been caught in doingso. Are the youth of Australia that stupid that as a visitor to Indonesia and knowing the rules, thought hecould get away with it?? I question the capacity of the parents in this as clearly they have not instilledenough usable brain power to enable the boy to act as a 14 year old boy should and know better. What'sthat I hear some of you say but it was a setup well a setup it maybe and none of us will really ever knowwhat happened as we weren't there when it happened, however the lad made a conscientious decisionto purchase illegal drugs while here as a visitor knowing the rules and must now pay for it. Everyoneseems to forget that this country is only ever going to welcome us all here as visitors and that, they dowell, it's the fact that stupid people do stupid things and then once caught plead ignorance. Thesepeople make me sick, and ashamed to have them as fellow Australians and I wish that a law waspassed to keep the idiots in Australia, so I can enjoy Bali with the real people that use at least half of their

brains (not you Ken your special, so long as you don't fall asleep with your sunnies on). In summary, it'sthe lads own fault and he should be made accountable for his crime irrespective of his age which willfurther teach the idiots that think they can come here and disregard the law and the people that makethis island what it is, the best holiday destination in the world

So there you have it, my take on a fool's action. I look forward to the new flurry of hate mail Ireceive in the new week and only hope the hairy backed lady uses the brain before commenting. I hopemost of you stay safe, happy, healthy and above all else remember, When in Rome, do as the Romansdo.

    Enjoy your week,ALIASJ.

A new app that aims toimprove both the quantityand quality of sleep usesbrainwaves to track theamount of time spent indifferent stages of sleep.

    Called Sleep Manager, the

app synchronizes with a headsetthat measures brain activity, eyemovement and other signals in light, deep and REM (rapid eyemovement) sleep.

    "The thing about sleep is

that it's not just abouthow much you get - it's about thequality of your sleep," said BenRubin, co-founder of Zeo, whichmakes the app.

"In general, you want tooptimize to get as much REMand deep sleep as possible."

A soft-sensor headbandmeasures brainwave activity, muscle tone and eye movements, the same signals that would betaken by a professional sleep lab,but at a consumer level.

    The signals are relayed

New app uses brainwaves to track sleep quality

    through Bluetooth to the

user's iPhone, iPad, or Androidsmartphone and uploaded toZeo's website.

Rubin said that sleeptracking is only the beginning. After benchmarking sleepquality, Zeo uses this informationto coach the user's sleep habits.

Studies have shown thatwhen people wake up during thelight sleep phase they are morerefreshed, so the app has theability to rouse users while in thisstate.

It also syncs with otherapps such as RunKeeper, arunn ing app l ica t ion , andDailyBurn, a nutrition planningapp, to allow users to see howtheir sleep quality relates to theirfitness and diets.

But not everyone isconvinced that Zeo can provideaccurate sleep data.

Rubin agrees there arelimitations to the measurementsthat can be done but he said theapp comes close to replicating asleep lab.

"If you have two expertsin a sleep lab scoring the samerecord, they agree with eachother about 83 percent of the

time," said Rubin. "Zeo agreeswith those guys about 75 percentof the time. So we're about 7/8thas accurate as a full sleep lab,"he added.

The company has an in-house sleep expert on theirteam, as well as an advisoryboard made up of sleep expertsfrom Harvard University and theUniversity of Colorado Bolder.

J u d g e sfrom GuinnessWorld Recordscame to Franceto measure himand confirmedhis suspicion thathe had record-breaking feet -his left measuring 38.1cm in lengthand his right, 37.4cm.

Takioullah cannot stand upstraight in the small flat he shareswith his mother in the Parissuburbs, has difficulty getting intoa taxi or the Metro, and can nevermove around without attractingattention.

But he is surprisingly goodhumoured about his situation, smiling and posing for mobilephone snaps and pol i te lyanswering questions about hiscondition, a rare medical problemthat he hopes to cure throughsurgery.

    T a k i o u l l a h i s f r o mMorocco, and grew up in a smallvillage - grew up fast. In one year inhis teens he put on more than onemetre in a spurt.

Now 29, no one thoughtto investigate his unusual sizeuntil he was 18.

"The school doctornoticed that I was this enormoussize and asked me to get someblood tests. I did that, and I was

diagnosed with a very rarecondition called acromegaly,'' hesaid.

Acromegaly is a pituitarygland disorder that causes thebody to produce excessive

growth hormone. The braintumour can lead to otherproblems aside from great size, and Takioullah was advised toseek surgery.

But first he decided tofinish his university studies ingeography. When he begantreatment, he was already hugeand closing in on the world's

tallest man, 251cm Sultan Kosenof Turkey.

Five years ago, a Frenchdoctor brought him to Paris fortreatment, and he is not expectedto reach Sultan's height record.

Takioullah contactedGuinness himself to challenge forthe record, and says he is proudto have it recognised, thoughdaily life is not without itsproblems.

He hopes one day tohave a specially built car hecould drive himself, but for noweven getting a pair of shoesstretches his budget - he takesa European size 58, which noshop has ever stocked.

"I always need themmade-to-measure and they'revery expensive. I once asked acobbler to make me someshoes and he said it would cost3500 euros ($4851),' ' he

    sighed.H e ' s

French doctors areworking to reduce Takioullah'sbrain tumour, and he hopes hisnewfound fame will help himfind the specialist treatment heneeds.

"The record now will beknown around the world, andexperts anywhere around theplanet may be able to help,''said Craig Glenday of GuinnessWorld Records, publisher of thefamous guide to the world'sextremes.

around since the 1930s but wasalways produced in unecologicalways that used a lot of chemicals.Unlike earlier prototypes, QMilchis made almost entirely fromcasein.

"We have developed anall-natural fiber consisting of avery high concentration of casein, with a few other naturalingredients -- and in only twoyears," the former microbiologystudent Domaske

said. The caseinis extracted fromdried milk powderand then heated upin a type of meat-mincing machinewith other naturalingredients. Thefiber comes out instrands and is thenspun into yarn on aspinning machine.

euros($199) to 200 euros.Luckily, for that kind of

money, the clothes don't comewith an expiry date -- during theheating process, the moleculesbind in such a way that the proteinwon't decompose.

Due to its anti-bacterialqualities, the milk fiber can alsobe used in medicine and makeup.Even some auto companies havelooked into using the fiber for carupholstery.

Dutch coffee shops face new curbs on salesNews Corner

Coffee shops in t he Netherlands wereleft wondering how to comply withrestrictions announced by the Dutchgovernment on the sale of "strong"cannabis, saying enforcement wouldbe difficult given the laws onproduction.

The Netherlands is famous for itsliberal soft drugs policies. A Dutch citizencan grow a maximum of five cannabis plantsat home for personal use but large-scaleproduction and transport is a crime.

The coalition government said itwould seek to ban what it considered to behighly potent forms of cannabis -- known as"skunk" -- placing them in the same categoryas hard drugs such as heroin or cocaine.

But the industry said the guidelineswere not clear enough.

"Commercial cannabis growers arealready breaking the law so how can testingbe legal? It's not clear what coffee shopsneed to do," said Maurice Veldman, a lawyerfrom the Dutch cannabis retailersassociation who represents coffee shops in

court.A pioneer of liberal drug policies, the

Netherlands has backtracked on itstolerance in the last few years, announcingplans in May to ban tourists from coffeeshops, which are popular attractions in citiessuch as Amsterdam.

The government said it would now

outlaw the sale of cannabis whose concentration ofTHC, seen as the main psychoactive substance, exceeds15 percent.

The average THC concentration in cannabis sold byDutch coffee shops is between 16 and 18 percent, according to the Trimbos Institute.

"All this will do is lead to people smoking more jointsand me selling more grams. But as it's used with tobacco itwill damage their health more," said Marc Josemans, who

owns a coffee shop in the city of Maastricht. The Dutch government says high THC content isdetrimental to mental health, particularly when used at ayoung age, and that it wants to send a clear signal thatstrong cannabis poses an unacceptable risk to users.

    Scientists reveal 'invisibi litycloak'

Eat your heart out, Harry Potter. Scientists in theUnited States have created an "invisibilitycloak"."The 'cloaking device' exploits a 'light-bending'phenomena most of us will be familiar with - the mirage -but created by a heated filament of carbon,"

"The effect, known as photothermal deflection works by'bending' light beams away from a surface towards youreyes."It's similar to what happens when hot air above theground 'reflects' a watery image of the sky instead ofallowing light beams to bounce off the ground. Thiscreates the illusion of pools of water that torment thirstytravellers in the desert."Researchers from the University of Dallas said carbonnanotubes could be heated extremely rapidly, creating asharp "heat gradient" similar to a layer of heated air abovethe ground."The extremely high heat-transfer ability of thesetransparent carbon nanotube sheets enables high-frequency modulation of sheet temperature over anenormous temperature range," they said.

"The remarkable performance of nanotube sheetssuggests possible applications for switchable invisibilitycloaks."Carbon nanotubes are a man-made form of carbon thatforms hair-like carbon "tubes" that can be millions of timeslonger than their diameter."Nanotubes are formed from 'rolled' tubes of graphene -atom-thick sheets of carbon."They are sometimes used in bicycle components orhigh-strength resins, but the material also hasextraordinary heat-conducting qualities - used here tocreate 'invisibility' at the touch of a button.

Aries Mar 20 - Apr 19Few things are more challenging for an Aries thanadmitting there are situations which make you feelvulnerable, yet about which you can do nothing. Instead offuming, discuss your concerns with those closest. They'llnot only listen. They might just know what needs doingand, better yet, do it for you.

Taurus Apr 20 - May 20While it's true, there's a certain honour in fighting for whatyou believe in, think carefully before you go to battle overpotential changes. Disruptive as these seem, they could

well be part of a future that's only just now emerging.Delay them and you could also delay progress in your ownlife.

Gemini May 21 - Jun 20Ups and downs in close relationships are no surprise.Except that recent clashes involved tricky practicalissues. While you've made considerable progress dealingwith these, you're rather hoping the rest will resolvethemselves. They won't. And with your ruler Mercurymoving into a new sign midweek, certain of these areurgent.Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22In late September new and rather intriguing ideas got youwondering whether certain long-standing arrangementsshouldn't be at least rethought. Since then you've doneexactly that. Between what you've already decided andthe events triggered by Wednesday's Full Moon, the oddsare good that you'll be making some changes, and soon.

Leo Jul 23 - Aug 22Little irritates you more than situations in which yourimpact in decisions is limited. Obviously if you were in

charge things would have been settled long ago. However, with your ruler the Sun meeting the ratherunsympathetic Saturn in a few days' time, it's unlikelyanybody will even ask your preferences.

Virgo Aug 23 - Sep 22Having to tell others what's their responsibility is badenough. But also, there's your irritation with them nothaving recognised it themselves. While this isn't the idealtime to discuss such matters at length, it's worth askingthem what they regard as actually being theirresponsibility. What you learn will surprise you.

LibraSep 23 - Oct 22If you're still wrestling with the questions raised by lateSeptember's Libra New Moon, it's no surprise. Someinvolve elements of your life you've long regarded asunchanging. Once that was true. But as thecircumstances around you have evolved so, too, mustyour own world. For now, explore your options. That'senough.Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 21Usually planning ahead is wise. However, try to ensurewhat you organise is flexible. Actually, judging by theinfluence of late October's stunning alliance between theplanet of growth and opportunity, Jupiter, and your rulerPluto, even if what arises cause disruption, the results willmore than justify the chaos they cause.

Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21Being an optimist by nature, you tend to feel that inacknowledging something's gone wrong, you've beendefeated. At the moment, however, setbacks are actuallyprompting you to examine arrangements that havebecome such a part of your life you rarely give them athought. The time has come to question them.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19You haven't been secretive about your views orintentions. Yet still, certain individuals remain mystifiedabout your activities. The problem may not be what you'vesaid but how you're said it. Tedious as going over oldground is, not only will doing so end their confusion, you'lllearn something about communication in the process.

Aquarius Jan 20 - Feb 18It's not that you've been unwilling to talk over certainissues. It's that you've been so preoccupied with pressingpractical matters that you've been unable to think aboutmuch else. If you can't talk to others about what's ofconcern to them, explain why. The may complain. Butthey'll also be grateful you told them.

Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 19Don't mistake the need to substantially rearrange, if notentirely abandon, certain arrangements as being disloyalto others. True, these changes will inconvenience them. However, if the tables were turned they wouldn't worryabout the impact of those changes on your life. They'dexpect you to go with the flow. They should, too.

A COW'S TAILA man staggered into a hospital with a concussion, multiple bruises, two black eyes and a 5 iron

wrapped tightly around his throat.Naturally the doctor asked him What happened to you?Well, I was having a quiet round of golf with my wife, when at a difficult hole; we bot sliced out golf

balls into a field of cattle. We went to look for them and while I was looking around I noticed one of thecows had something white at its rear end.I walked over and lifted its tail and sure enough there was a golf ball with my wife's

monogram on it stuck right in the middle of the cow's backside. Still holding the cow'stail up, I yelled to my wife, Hey, this looks like yours! I don't remember much after that.

    A Romantic Dinner

A man and woman were having a quiet, romanticdinner in a fine restaurant. They were gazing lovingly

at each other and holding hands.Their waitress, taking another order at a table a fewsteps away, suddenly noticed the man slowly slidingdown his chair and under the table, but the woman

acted unconcerned. The waitress watched as the man slid all the waydown his chair and out of sight under the table.Still, the woman appeared calm and unruffled, apparently unaware her dining companion had

disappeared. The waitress went over to the table and said to the

woman, "Pardon me, ma'am, but I think your husbandjust slid under the table."

The woman calmly looked up at her and said, "No, hedidn't. He just walked in the door."

Beale touch and go for semiLosing full-back KurtleyBeale to injury would be a"big blow" to the Wallabiesbut scr um-half Will Genia is"100 per cent confident"they can beat New Zealandin Sunday's World Cupsemi-final.

Beale is "touch and go" forthe Eden Park match afterlimping off the field with a "mild"hamstring injury during theWallabies' 11-9 victory overSouth Africa inWellington onSunday.

    The 22-year-old is onep a r t o fA u s t r a l i a ' sbackline "ThreeAmigos" alongwith f ly half

    Quade Coopera n d w i n g e rJ a m e sO'Connor andhas been one ofhis team's maina t t a c k i n gthreats at thetournament.

"It would be a big blow butyou'd have to deal with it," Geniasaid.

"It's not something youcould dwell on. He's obviously aworld-class player but in sayingthat, with the depth in our

backline, we'd probably be able tocover it."

O'Connor or BerrickBarnes would be the most likelyto fill the role should Beale missout when coach Robbie Deansannounces his team on Friday.

Prop Sekope Kepu hadalso had a scan on his injuredankle and that was morepromising.

    Genia, who forms a half-

back partnership withCooper that goes back to theirschooldays, is likely to have a keyrole to play if the Wallabies canupset the hosts and reach a fourthWorld Cup final.

The 23-year-old said hehad been immensely proud of theway his team-mates found a way

to beat the world championSpringboks last weekend despitehaving very little possession andhaving to defend for much of thegame.

"I've never been part of agame like that and won, if youlook at the stats alone, you'd thinkthey beat us 50-0," he said.

"It was just won on gutsand character and to be honestI'm just so proud to have been

part of that performance, to haveplayed that game and won."

G e n i a i s a l e s sextroverted character thanCooper but clearly the confidenceruns just as deep and there wereno mealy-mouthed sidestepswhen he was asked whether theyoung Wallabies side could beatthe All Blacks for a second timethis year.

    "[I'm] 100 per cent

confident," Genia said."I don't know if I could be

more confident. I don't want tosound arrogant, I'm not thatsort of bloke.

" I 'm not cocky orarrogant, but I really believe inthe guys that we have in thisgroup that we can do it.

"We back each other allthe way and we showed on theweekend that we can not onlywin through skill but also teamspirit, wanting to do it for each

    other."For that

fact alone, I haveevery confidencegoing into thisgame."

    G e n i asaid he thoughtSunday's matchwould be a betterspectacle thanlast week's battlew i t h t h eSpringboks, as e n t i m e n tshared by AdamAshley-Cooper,who admitted hehad had just one

solitary carry of the ball in theentire match.

"The way the All Blacksplay the game, there is going tobe some expansive footballplayed," Ashley-Cooper said.

    "Given the conditions, if

they're right, there's going to bea lot of ball-in-hand stuff.

"Not only will eachmember of the squad see theball, it's going to be anentertaining spectacle foreveryone involved."

The total of payments toplayers of each club for ASAs is$613,000 in the 2012 football year,an increase of seven per cent onthe 2011 figure of $573,000 perclub, the AFL said.

Base payments for rookieshave increased by 17 per cent, setat $41,400 for 2012.

AFLPA chief Matt Finnissaid the interim pay deal was agood outcome for players and thegame.

    "Today's announcement

With the Giants alreadyhaving the first three picks in thenational draft and pick five, if they

also get Gold Coast's firstpick, it will give them a cleansweep of the first five.

    Tander wins third Bathurst crown

    Holden's Garth Tander denieda f a s t - f i n i s h i n g C r a i g

Lowndes in one of the mostmemorable Bathurst 1000finishes to claim his thirdMount Panorama crown onSunday.

The Holden Racing Teampilot won by less then three-tenths of asecond after having to hold off five-time Bathurst winner Lowndes in adramatic two-car sprint at the end ofthe 161-lap epic.

Lowndes charged over thefinal 20 laps, coming from fourthposition to cut the margin to half asecond to Tander going into the lastlap.

Despite attempting severalpasses over the final sweep of the

6.2km circuit, Lowndes couldn't find away past Tander's Commodore as theWest Australian delivered HRT'sseventh Bathurst crown.

The result means Tander's22-year-old South Australian co-driverNick Percat becomes a champion inhis first Bathurst 1000 start.

Holden swept the podiumwith four-t ime champion NewZealander Greg Murphy and DaneAllan Simonsen finishing third.

Mark Winterbottom andSteven Richards were next in the

highest placed Ford.Tander's battle with Lowndes

was not the first time he emerged on topagainst a TeamVodafone Commodorehaving endured a battle with JamieWhincup earlier in the race.

But Whincup's race turned intoa disaster when his Commodore lostpower early in the 138th lap.

The three-t ime Bathurstchampion limped his way around to the

garage for repairs but his bid for anothervictory was over. His 21st-place finish also

means he falls 100 points behindLowndes in the V8 championshipstandings with four rounds remaining.

Ford driver David Besnard hada lucky escape after a spectacular crashon lap 112 left his Jim Beam RacingFalcon engulfed in flames.

Besnard hit a tyre bundle hardon his first lap after a pit stop, rupturinghis fuel tank and spilling fuel all over thetrack.

    T h e s p i l l i g n i t e d a n dsurrounded Besnard's vehicle butquick-thinking marshals doused theinferno and the 34-year-old part-timedriver emerged unharmed.

Holden rookie CameronWaters, 17, also hit a wall and had alengthy spell in the pits but he got backonto the track to become the youngestfinisher at a Bathurst 1000.

The next V8 Supercars eventis the Gold Coast 600 on October 22and 23.

Tough yearIn the past 12 months, Tander

has become a first-time father todaughter Scarlett, his Holden RacingTeam boss Tom Walkinshaw died and

HRT has struggled and faceda major internal shake-up.

"What this will do is give theteam a lot of belief we're headed in theright direction," Tander said.

"We want to dedicate this oneto Tom. It's the first Bathurst since hispassing and he was all about thisplace."

The Scot, a British touring carlegend, first raced at Mount Panorama

in 1985 - the start of a 25-year love affairwith Australia's greatest motor race untilhis death in December last year.

It was HRT's 200th Australiantouring car victory and seventh Bathurstwin.

Tander kept his nerve, then hiscompetitive nature kicked in asLowndes closed to within a car lengthwith two laps remaining.

"I thought 'Stuff him, he's notcoming past'," Tander said.

"Then it was to make sure wewere fast in the key areas of the track.

"At the moment it's the drive ofmy life. I was in a similar situation in2000 when Paul Radisich was chasingme, so I've been there before."

    Percat became the first driver

in 34 years to win the Bathurst 1000 athis first attempt.

Belgian Formula One aceJacky Ickx was the last rookie winner, teaming with Allan Moffat in 1977, buthe brought a muscular internationalpedigree to his co-driving stint.

Percat drives in the second-tier V8 development series and, despiteone nasty brush with the wall fromwhich the car escaped damage, did his

job well to lift his hopes of a fulltime V8Supercar drive in 2012.
