Welcome to the 2012-2013 Catalogue of Kube Publishing. Here you will find something for everyone.

established in 2007, Kube publishing is one of the largest publishing houses for Islamic Literature in Europe and seeks

to lead a new wave in Muslim publishing across the globe. It handles the well established Islamic Foundation imprint, now in its fourth decade, with over 300 published titles with strengths in Qur’an commentary (tafsir), Islamic Economics and books for children. The other imprint, Kube, seeks to reflect the Muslim experience to the world through history, biography, memoir, politics, current affairs, culture and civilization.

The Islamic Foundation aims to achieve excellence in academic research, education, publications, training and building bridges

between Muslims and others. since 1973, the Foundation has developed its national and international standing through the character, variety and scope of its activities. It has, at present, over 300 published titles, and houses one of the largest private Islamic libraries in Western Europe. It publishes two academic journals: The Muslim World Book Review (quarterly) and Review of Islamic Economics (bi-annually). Dr. Muhammad abdul Jabbar Beg was a lecturer in the Faculty of Islamic Studies at the University of Malaysia (1974-78). He was then promoted to the office of an Associate Professor (1979-1986) in the Department of Arabic Studies and Islamic Civilization. During the rest of his career he has been an Associate Professor at various Universities, including the University of Brunei. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge and has made useful contributions to knowledge through books, articles in journals and conference papers. Yasminah Hashim is a twenty-one year old law student currently living in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. She is an active member in multiple youth initiatives and involved in organizing five successful youth conferences. Meanwhile her main focus is in the initiative she co-founded “Lawyers United”; a union that brings together law students/graduates and lawyers in an effortto develop skills, discuss current legal issues and exchange experiences. She was also voted in as the President of Dar Al-Hekmah College’s Student Government for the year 2010-2011. Yasmina is continuing her bachelors degree in legal studies in Jeddah and in the near future aims to specialize in the area of international law.

The Ottomans, from the time of Murad II (r. 1446-1451) onwards,

had sometimes used the title of caliph to strengthen their legitimacy,

but they never made a formal and lasting claim to exercise political

authority over all Muslims, regarding themselves first of all as sultans

or kings. However, these claims were made more strongly in the late

eighteenth century, when, in losing land to the Russians and other

European nations, the title of caliph was emphasised to highlight

the sultan’s spiritual duty towards Muslims now under foreign non-

Muslim rule. It was Abdulhamid II (r. 1876-1909) who made the

strongest claim to the office of caliph again in the hope of shoring

up support for an Ottoman empire that was rapidly loosing ground

to the European powers and to growing nationalist sentiment within

its borders. The caliphate was formally abolished by the nationalist

Turkish leader Kemal Ataturk on 3rd March 1924. Its abolition was

seen a great tragedy for the Muslim community (ummah) as a whole.

For thirteen centuries, since the election of the first caliph, Abu Bakr

al-Siddiq, in the year 632, the caliphate, despite its decline in political

significance after the tenth century, remained the potent symbol of

Muslim unity. The historical unified caliphate under the Rightly-guided

caliphs, the Umayyads and the early ‘Abbasids kept a great symbolic

legitimacy right down to the beginning of the twentieth century and

after, providing a political ideal and a challenge to the misconduct of

Muslim kings and rulers throughout the ages.

The caliphate had come to symbolise the ideal model of political

authority in Islam. Apart from the Sunnis, the Shi‘i Muslims had

established the Fatimid caliphate during the tenth century, a sign that

the institution of the caliphate itself enjoyed near universal prestige

among Muslims of all backgrounds and denominations throughout

the fifteen centuries of Islamic

history. It is for this reason that

the abolition of the caliphate,

even if it had become more a

symbol of unity by the twentieth

century, was still seen as a

great loss by the vast majority

of Muslims. It had widespread

legal and spiritual consequences

for the Muslim community

(ummah): there is no caliph in

whose name the Friday sermon

(khutbah) can be delivered in

mosques throughout the Muslim

world. The loss of the caliph as

a Muslim sovereign authority

was in and of itself a sign of

the sharp decline in Islamic

power and authority by the

twentieth century. The abolition

of the caliphate by a nationalist

government in Turkey showed

that it was no longer regarded as

a relevant institution, a dramatic

change from the Ottomans in

the late nineteenth century who

had attempted to revive the

office of the caliphate to order

to strengthen Muslim unity.

In Ottoman society, poetry, science, history, textiles,

ceramics and architecture all flourished. Islamic ceramics

perhaps reached their heights at Iznik, Turkey, in the

mid-sixteenth century where uniquely seven underglazed

colours were pioneered to decorate tiles with floral

designs, most notably that of the tulip. Similarly, the great

architect Sinan (1491-1588) would pioneer innovative new

mosque designs to better the achievement of Emperor

Justinian’s cathedral of St. Sophia in Istanbul. The dome

of his masterpiece, the Selimiye Mosque at Edirne, was,

in his words, ‘six cubits wider and four cubits deeper than

the dome of St Sophia’ (see page 86).

Serves 8-10

I discovered this famous Iranian salad when I was at college with some fellow Iranian

students, and loved it and had to fi nd out how it was made. This salad is also part

of Spanish tapas – so it must have made its way along the Silk Route and found its

way into Spanish cuisine! This particular version is thought to have been invented in

Moscow in 1860 by a Russian chef called Lucien Olivier, who cooked at a restaurant

called the Hermitage. It was revolutionary at the time but in today’s culinary climate

it is basically a glorifi ed potato salad. Once you get the hang of it you can experiment

and try out different vegetables and meats, and maybe even fi sh and seafood, but this

salad must always contain dill and pickled gherkins. But don’t add too much spice or

it will turn into something that tastes like coronation chicken.

PreparationSoak the chicken in a large bowl or sink with

three tablespoons of salt and the juice of one

lemon; let this soak for at least 15 minutes as

this will clean any grime off the bird. Rinse the

chicken inside and out and set aside in a sieve

or colander for 15 minutes to drain.

Place the chicken in saucepan large enough to

contain it and the eggs. Put enough cold water

into the saucepan so that chicken and eggs are

covered. Add two tablespoons of fresh dill (for

dry, use one teaspoon), and the chopped onion.

Bring it to the boil, and then turn to heat down

and leave to simmer for 40 minutes. Potatoes

can be placed on top in a steamer, which saves

time and energy, or boil them separately for 20

minutes. In a separate small saucepan cook the

frozen mixed vegetables in boiling water for 5

minutes, drain and leave to cool.

Once done, leave the chicken to cool down,

and, when cool enough, take the eggs out and

put them in cold water, as well as letting the

potatoes cool down too. Take the chicken out of

the stock and leave it on a plate to cool. When

cool, peel of the chicken skin and then take all

the fl esh off the bones.

Combine the cooked chicken pieces, mashed

potatoes, carrots, peas, chopped onion and dill

pickle, hard-boiled eggs and capers. Fold slightly

to mix, and then, use a knife to break it all up.

Mix the mayonnaise, sour cream, mustard, lemon

juice, pepper, salt and black pepper and three

tablespoons of fresh dill (or one teaspoon of

dried dill) to make the dressing. Pour over the

salad and mix thoroughly and gently. Cover the

bowl and chill well in the fridge. To serve, put

the salad upon a bed of lettuce leaves on a large

was one named Thawr. Thawr was home to a little spider.

Suddenly Snow White turned and saw the huntsman walking towards her. Snow White began to

tremble with fear.

“Child, I have been ordered by your stepmother to kill you.”

“Huntsman,” cried Snow White, “please don’t kill me!” She pleaded and pleaded with the huntsman to

spare her life, in return she promised she would run far, far away and never again return to her home.

But the huntsman would not listen. “If I do not bring back your heart and liver, your wicked

The huntsman looked for Snow White and

Qur’an in her bag. He watched as Snow White

walked towards the forest picking some flowers.

He looked around to see if anyone was near. He

then took out his bow and arrow.
