Treasures of the Qur’anSurah al-Fatihah to Surah al-Ma’idahAbdur Rashid Siddiqui
We are living in a time when the need to centre our lives on the Qur’an is most urgent and compelling. Without this we will never discover ourselves and give meaning to our existence in this world.
The fi rst group of Surahs (al-Fatihah, al-Baqarah, al ‘Imran, al-Nisa’ and al-Ma’idah) are introduced and examined in this volume, with the author looking at their structure and major themes. The central theme of which is conferring the status of Muslim ummah on the believers, to which a new Shariah was given; a complete code of life was promulgated.

A Treasury of Sacred MaximsA Commentary on Islamic Legal PrinciplesDr. Shahrul Hussain
This book aims to illustrate how Islamic jurists used maxims as an instrument to condense complicated legal principles. With an emphasis upon literary quality, concision, and concentration of meaning, each maxim is full of value and significance and typifies the tradition of qawa’id (legal maxims) in the Islamic intellectual sciences.
This beautiful collection of Islamic maxims is unique in that it provides a commentary that addresses the legal and moral implication of them, along with providing practical examples of their applications.

Women in the Qur’anAn Emancipatory Reading Asma LamrabetTranslated by Myriam Francois-Cerrah
Today, the issue of Muslim women is held hostage between two perceptions: an ultra-conservative Islamic approach and a liberal Western approach. At the heart of this debate Muslim women are finding their voices and calling for the rejuvenation of the Islamic spirit of equality and liberation that is at the heart of the Qur’an.
By acknowledging the systemic injustice frequently experienced by Muslim women in today’s societies in the name of religion; and also rejecting a perspective that seeks to promote Western values as the only means of liberating them, the author is able to define a third way. One in which their refusal to remain silent in the face of injustice is an act of devotion and their demand for reform, within the guidelines laid out by God, will lead to liberation.

A Day with the ProphetAhmed von Denffer
See how the Prophet Muhammad behaved on a typical day. Based on the most reliable of sources — well-known ahadith.
This book invites Muslims and non-Muslims to acquaint themselves with the prophet’s sunnah (practice and teachings) and inspires them to follow it with sincerity and devotion. The ahadith have been selected from authenticated and well-known collections of hadith-literature to present a composite picture of the life of the Prophet Muhammad, described in the Qur’an as the best model for humanity.
It includes chapters on spiritual actions, such as waking at night to pray, reading the Qur’an and saying the five daily prayers and also looks at everyday activities such as bathing, using the toilet, eating and drinking, earning a living and sexual intercourse.

The Ottomans, from the time of Murad II (r. 1446-1451) onwards,
had sometimes used the title of caliph to strengthen their legitimacy,
but they never made a formal and lasting claim to exercise political

or kings. However, these claims were made more strongly in the late
eighteenth century, when, in losing land to the Russians and other
European nations, the title of caliph was emphasised to highlight
the sultan’s spiritual duty towards Muslims now under foreign non-
Muslim rule. It was Abdulhamid II (r. 1876-1909) who made the

up support for an Ottoman empire that was rapidly loosing ground
to the European powers and to growing nationalist sentiment within
its borders. The caliphate was formally abolished by the nationalist
Turkish leader Kemal Ataturk on 3rd March 1924. Its abolition was
seen a great tragedy for the Muslim community (ummah) as a whole.

caliphs, the Umayyads and the early ‘Abbasids kept a great symbolic
legitimacy right down to the beginning of the twentieth century and
after, providing a political ideal and a challenge to the misconduct of
Muslim kings and rulers throughout the ages.
The caliphate had come to symbolise the ideal model of political
authority in Islam. Apart from the Sunnis, the Shi‘i Muslims had
established the Fatimid caliphate during the tenth century, a sign that
the institution of the caliphate itself enjoyed near universal prestige
among Muslims of all backgrounds and denominations throughout

history. It is for this reason that
the abolition of the caliphate,
even if it had become more a
symbol of unity by the twentieth
century, was still seen as a
great loss by the vast majority
of Muslims. It had widespread
legal and spiritual consequences
for the Muslim community
(ummah): there is no caliph in
whose name the Friday sermon
(khutbah) can be delivered in
mosques throughout the Muslim
world. The loss of the caliph as
a Muslim sovereign authority
was in and of itself a sign of
the sharp decline in Islamic
power and authority by the
twentieth century. The abolition
of the caliphate by a nationalist
government in Turkey showed
that it was no longer regarded as
a relevant institution, a dramatic
change from the Ottomans in
the late nineteenth century who
had attempted to revive the

The How to Live as a Muslim series is an essential guide for anyone who
seeks to acquire an accurate knowledge of Islam, as it elucidates all the facets
of Islam with precise brevity in three volumes: An Introduction to Islamic
Faith and Thought, Living in the Shade of Islam, and Living the Ethics and
Morality of Islam.
The essential duty of our existence is to seek perfection through belief and
worship. Islam holds believers accountable for fulfilling certain acts of worship.
These prescribed acts of worship, on which the building of Islam rests, are known
as the five pillars of Islam. The belief in God’s Existence and Oneness and the
Messengership of Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings, is the first of
these pillars. This most important pillar along with all the essentials of Islamic
faith and thought and Islam’s outlook on life are discussed in the first book of
this series.
Referring again to the Islamic faith briefly in the first chapter, this second
volume discusses in detail the other four pillars of Islam: the establishment
of the five daily Prayers, the prescribed purifying alms, observing the fast of
Ramadan, and the pilgrimage to Makka. In this work, cleanliness, which is
equated by God’s Messenger to “half of faith” is also presented in detail with
its material, spiritual, and ritual aspects. This volume also examines the issues
of marriage and family life, the lawful and the unlawful, as well as the prayers,
supplications, and remembrance of God in a clear, succinct manner.
Ali Ünal is a scholar, columnist and a prolific translator of works with an
Islamic theme into English. Ünal’s English translation of the Qur’an was
released in 2006 with the title, The Qur’an with Annotated Interpretation in
Modern English. It is also available in German, Spanish, and Turkish. Ünal is
the author of several books in Turkish and English, including Islam Addresses
Contemporary Issues and The Resurrection and the Afterlife.

seeks to acquire an accurate knowledge of Islam, as it elucidates all the facets
of Islam with precise brevity in three volumes: An Introduction to Islamic
Faith and Thought, Living in the Shade of Islam, and Living the Ethics and
Morality of Islam, respectively.
Islam comprises a total way of life. It guides humanity to what is good and
right firstly through faith; this is the essence of religion. The aspects of religious
practice, social matters and ethics are built on this foundation of faith. The first
volume of the series therefore delves into the heart of the matter, presenting
clearly the fundamentals and different aspects of Islamic faith.
This volume makes an effort to peel away the layers of what we think
we know about Islam to reveal what Islam says about itself, and to explain
the pillars of the Islamic faith. It discusses Islam’s worldview, how we fit into
it, and what God expects of us. It explains why Prophets were sent to guide
us to the truth, why the Qur’an is the best guide for this journey, and how
and why God equipped us to make this journey. Also examined in detail are
the Resurrection and the Afterlife, Divine Destiny—often misunderstood as
predestination and the consequent lack of choice and free will—eschatology,
death and the spirit after death, and the invisible realm of existence.
