you missed it, then please come to our Fall Luncheon on the 24th of October. Many thanks to Kerry McMahan’s (’54) sponsorship and to Jeri Samuelsen ’63 and her committee for a very enjoyable gathering of bears!

Our annual all-class summer picnic will be here in no time—Sunday, August 23, at Gas Works Park. Feel free to bring a side dish or a dessert to accompany the burgers and dogs, and a good time will be had by all! Remember your sunscreen and sunglasses.

Hey all! Welcome to my third edition. Things are going along as usual for me. I’m just enjoying the heat that we’ve been having. Yes, I actually enjoy it! I just got back from a trip to Vegas and compared to the heat there, this is great. Other than that, I’m still running, working, and having fun. Hope you enjoy this issue and the rest of summer!

in this issue. Your donations are most welcome to keep this program funded for Grizzly heirs, as well as for supporting our KUAY newsletter, plus our picnic and lunches.

Our dwindling numbers come as no surprise to us. We are a shrinking association, as our last graduation class was 1981. That said, we are seeing smaller attendance at our lunches. There has been discussion about cancelling the Fall Luncheon and moving the Annual Business Meeting to the Spring Luncheon. We would like to hear from you. We want your thoughts on this. Call us. Email us. Contact us!

Craig Smith ’69 has been a board member for the past two years. He has made the decision to resign due to work, family and other issues. Thanks, Craig, for being a part of the board, and we hope to see you at the picnic!

Don’t forget to check our website www.qagrizzlies.org for periodic updates. Thanks, everyone.

WHO’S NEWSCompiled By Kim R. Turner ’61

First, two losses. Marv and Shirle Hartley died within a month of each other. They were married over 60 years, and although both

had teaching degrees, Shirle had to postpone her career. Marv taught seven years (1958-64) at Queen Anne, and was often an endower to our alum events: keepsakes, memorabilia and memories. We will miss having them at our luncheons.

Marion (Edgerton) Parker ’34 celebrated 97 years, much of it actively involved in the Queen Anne community, raising a family near where she herself grew up, and making an impact from her 24 years work at the Queen Anne Library where she was an honored guest at the library’s 2014 centennial celebration. As an active member of the Queen Anne Historical Society, she was one of

became the book, “Queen Anne, Community on the Hill.” She has been a close friend during my tenure with the library system, and was one of the angels who keep our alumni association going. She also will be missed.

1940s: Riley T. Folsom ’42 and Eudora L. (Isbell) Folsom ’44 are living at the same street address in Stanwood, WA, in assisted living. They held their 71st wedding anniversary in April and consider themselves in reasonably good health for ages 88 and 90! They send thanks for all our hard work.

William F. Briggs ’45 sent a photo of the 1941 John Hay baseball team, most of who graduated from Queen Anne High in 1945. Suzanne Helgerson sends us notice of Warren Helgerson ’48. He was a member of the UW crew teams which won two national collegiate racing championships. He served

in the Inchon Invasion. He had a busy life, purchasing a 32-acre apple orchard in East Wenatchee and supplied top quality apples yearly. He died last February (2015). Annabelle (Gullikson) Wall ’49 sent a note and article from Kennewick. She and husband Jerry have provided eight harps to Tri-Cities/Yakima Valley schools over the years: harps! The recent result is that Kennewick High School grad Allison Bjorkedal won a Grammy playing the kithara, a harp-like instrument.

1950s: William A. “Bill” Reese III ’50 sent us a large family genealogy segment. Evalie Joan (Thompson) Fox ’51 died March 18th. She had an active life, working for the Los Angeles County Dept. of Social Services for seven years and later for the I.R.S. for 15 years. She was actively involved in singing in Santa Monica, CA.

1960s: We received copies of photos of the 1965 opening day for

Press Barge/KUAY Weekly” with 1965 grads Captain S. A. “Steve” Eward, John Daughters, Scott “Ringo” Fleury, Jim Nelson ’64 and Rick “Bosun” Dagg. Great pictures, but the donor forgot to tell us his or her name, and from where the photos came??? Also 1965: Mike

Fiorini retired in 2010 after 36 years in supply chain and procurement organizations. He and wife Pam will celebrate their 46th wedding anniversary in June. He sends thanks to the Alumni Association for all we do. Mike and Alex (Dalinkus) Smith ’67 are retiring from LeRoux’s in Magnolia the end of May. (see elsewhere in issue). Weltha Jane (Forsyth) Jensen ’68 retired in Dec. 2014 as Associate Professor of Nursing at Salt Lake Community College. She and her sister, Marilyn (Forsyth) Wallin ’62 who is also an RN, care for their 98-year-old father, who lives with Marilyn and her husband Bruce, in St. George, UT.

1970s: Louise E. (Ball) Stutes ’70 sent a nice donation to the alums and a note: “I certainly enjoy receiving the KUAY! Thank you. I was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in 2014 serving Kodiak, Cordova, Yakutat, Seldovia, Tyonek, Tatilik and Chenega.”

Ruben Van Kempen ’70, noted Roosevelt High School Drama Instructor, is

after 34 years teaching. He

has performed and directed in local theater for years. His students have gone onto theater and television all over the U.S. and abroad. Many articles about him appear online (just Google him)! Gordon C. “Gordy” Forguson ’75 sends word that he was involved in the recovery of a B-17 Flying Fortress from the depths of Dyke Lake, Labrador, ten years ago. Gordon currently lives in Federal Way with his family. Eric Berge ’76 owns and operates Werner’s Crash Shop on Taylor Avenue for the past 26 years. QA Grad Does Not Stay in Lovely Hotels! By Claudia (Kettles) Lovgren ’65

QA Grad of ’63 Terry (Samuelson) Elizondo travels with her daughters Mary and Christina to developing countries, connecting with the

local residents. The Spanish speaking attorney and advocate for Latin American citizens eschews chocolates on the pillow of hotels with indoor plumbing and lovely linens for the adventure of staying in places like a $5 hotel in Ubud, Bali, riding a broken down ferry to Lombok, then onto the Gili Islands and staying with families in homes on stilts.

Terry, who lives in Houston TX and is the twin sister of QA Alumni board member Jeri Samuelsen ’63, and Terry’s daughter Christina took a $5 sleeper bus from Pune, Mexico, sleeping on plywood two feet from the ceiling. Sounds like they needed “bed belts” since they were bouncing and hitting the ceiling. There was a robbery (only the men were robbed) on another bus to Tlaquepaque but that did not stop them for more adventures: going to Goa and a Hindu temple in the jungles of the Monkey Forest; to Thailand (unknowingly in a red

light district) and getting bit by jelly

Paraguay, Kenya, Argentina, China, India and Brazil.

They have climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro on a “budget” trek with six porters who cooked for them along with carrying their luggage. There are normally 14 porters per person on these treks. Terry felt they were all family and it was mutual by the time

Terry’s travels with her daughters have provided them with a compassionate connection with the people of poor countries, who may be sleeping in a tarp tent on the sidewalk and washing their clothes in a metal pot, along with a strengthened connection with her daughters.

Of course they also travel with their father, Terry’s husband Candelario, to more comfortable destinations at “real” hotels.

Pete Barbas in 1954

Pete Barbas ’54 and Pete’s Poop DeckBy Kim R. Turner ’61

This started with an email requesting I get in touch with Pete Barbas ’54 and grew into a little extra research and phone calls with Pete, correspondence received and a little sleuthing online to get a better picture of the man and his former jazz venue. My classmates Julie (Breitstein) Miller and Kathy (McMahan) Sierer, both ’61 interviewed Pete for the KUAY Weekly back in 1961 when his jazz nightclub, the Poop Deck, was already 4 years old.

The place was located at the foot of Main Street under the Alaskan Way viaduct. Peanut shells covered

and the jazz personalities and early hard rock mavens read like a Who’s Who of Jazz: Cal Tjader, Shorty Rogers, Howard Rumsey and the Lighthouse All-Stars, Barney Kessell, the Chico Hamilton Quintet, Ahmad Jamal, Floyd Standifer, Chris Connor, the Ronnie Ball Trio, Horace Silver Quintet, Ernestine Anderson and Jimi Hendrix, the latter two early in their careers. There are a slew of articles online regarding Pete and cover both the Seattle Greek and Italian communities.

After Pete closed the Poop Deck, shortly after the end of the Century 21 World’s Fair, he opened a neighborhood establishment on Beacon Hill and continued for several more years. He retired from show biz in 1969 and moved to Camano

Island, where he lives part of the time. His cousin, John Dimitriou, created

today.

The basket given by Ed Bol and Connie Haas was won by Kathy Gaylord ’63.

and three spouses in attendance. The UW-Cal crew races were being held during the day, but inside the atmosphere was highly charged with Grizzly laughter and the overall sense of good will which comes about when we are together. Hope to see you all at the Fall Luncheon!

Vern Emery—QA MentorBy Cliff Skelton ’46

If we are fortunate in life we encounter a few mentors who steer us in the right directions. For many boys at Queen Anne during the 40s (war years), such a person was Vern Emery. Vern was our YMCA Secretary, holding forth in a very old, leaky-roofed, converted church (ed. the Queen Anne Congregational), the subsequent site of the KIRO TV tower on Queen Anne Ave. He rode herd on three Hi Y clubs, and a couple of Jr. Hi Ys (for underclassmen). Later in that decade, the YMCA transferred him to its University branch.

phoned several of us, suggesting that we start a Y’s Men’s Club, which we did, with members mostly Queen Anne and Roosevelt grads. For several years we met and had dinner at that Y, supported its activities, and bettered ourselves in the process.

With his success in Seattle, Vern was promoted to Secretary of the Boise YMCA, where his members included the Governor of Idaho. After a very successful stint there, Vern ran for, and was elected to, the County’s Board of Governors. Until his death, in 1985, Vern kept in touch with several of us, and called us to have lunch whenever he was in Seattle. To this day several of us exchange Christmas cards with his widow, Barbara. Until the day he died we were “his boys”.

Magnolia Icon ClosesBy Sherry (Peck) Moody ’66

Mike and Alex (Dalinkus) Smith, both ’67, closed their LeRoux Fine Apparel store in Magnolia, at the end of May. After thirty years, they made the decision that the time was right to enjoy more personal time. He came from Magnolia, she from Queen Anne. Because of their QA High School roots, they kindly sold our alumni memorabilia for many years, letting us take up shelf space for caps, mugs, playing cards, clothing, etc., out of the goodness of their Grizzly hearts.

During all of those years, Mike and Alex were very active in the community, each having served as president of the Magnolia Chamber of Commerce. They had front row seats to the comings and goings in the village they call home. On almost any morning, Mike could be seen sweeping the sidewalk in front of their store. Much of it from the Magnolia trees on W. McGraw! They bought the store in 1985 from Russ Jacobson, their friend and mentor. The original owner, in 1948, was Bud LeRoux. That’s 67 years, quite remarkable! Tim Moody ’66,

jeans, years ago, from Russ, who let him set up a credit account. Not bad for an 18 year old. He was a customer to the end … stories like this helped make LeRoux the kind of place that caused folks to keep coming back, wherever they were. And they did. Roughly 50% of their business was from outside Magnolia.

So from the QAHSAA, we thank you, Mike and Alex, for your years of generosity. Best wishes for your new life. Go Grizzlies!

Alex (Dalinkus) Smith and Mike Smith, both ’67, in their Magnolia store.

QAHS Class of ’65 50th Reunion By Sandra (Rustuen) Smith ’65

By the time you are reading this, our QAHS Class of ’65 reunion (June 19-21) will be history. But…, at the time of writing this article, we are just three weeks away from the “Big Event”. To date, we have 216 classmates registered for the reunion, but hope to have a few more. Myself and Claudia (Kettles) Lovgren, served as the co-chairs. Our two MCs are Dr. Alan Fine, our Senior Class President, and Kurt Schnebele, our Student Body President. We also launched our own Class of ’65 website in April: www.qahsclassof65.com. A special thank you to Elizabeth (Weeks) Pankey ’68, for allowing us to use her cartoon of a Grizzly

pool at QAHS. Elizabeth is the sister of June (Weeks) Carney, one of our classmates.

Getting together at Ivar’s for their annual Class of ’52 Men’s Lunch on President’s Day were (clockwise from left) Karl House (‘51), Irv Hunter, John Privat, Terry Howard, Dick Vanderpool and Dick Bean.

You say you have the Grizzly Spirit, then perhaps you will volunteer to get involved with the MWOQA. Not that long ago, Grizzly women were invited to join. To move forward with Bob’s Tournament and the Christmas Luncheon, our need is to recruit volunteers from the classes of the 60’s and 70’s. My belief is that when the time comes you’ll take the vitamin pill and join us. If interested, send an email to [email protected]. We hope you will invest in renewing and preserving old Queen Anne friendships.
