Letter from the Coordinator (an nyoung ha say yo) ! Hello and

welcome to Korean Night 2009 presented by your own Korean Student Association! My name is Raymond Chetti and I would personally like to thank you for coming out to our show.

As you may or may not know, Korean Culture Night was an annual tradition at UB and every year KSA prided

itself in providing a quality show that featured a wide variety of performances that showcased Korean culture.

Tonight, we’ve prepared a show where the individuals and groups you are about to see have practiced so hard, just for you. So please sit back, relax, and enjoy the show as we take you on your very own Korean adventure that highlights both traditional and modern Korean performances in the form of song, dance, and talent! Sincerely, Raymond Chetti Korean Night CoordinatorKorean Student Association President ‘09

Caroline Kil solo singing “Cheounne” by Younha

I’ll be singing solo, Cheonunne by Younha, which translates to “At First Sight” I like singing slow sad songs because I can relate to them the most.

Why I perform for K-Night?: It’s all in the fun ofsinging” plus, having had performed for it my freshmen year, I thought it’d be fun to do it again. I thought it’d be especially interesting to sing a duet with a guy who also has a passion for singing.

Yongnam is a typical “anjeunban” performance (sitting performance) composed of poongmul rhythms from the Yong Nam region. The piece ends with with Jak-Swe; a fast version of ee-chae (2nd rhythm) featuring a duet between the sang swe and bu swe. There are 4 instruments typically used in poongmul which all represent sounds of nature. The janggu (hour-glass shaped drum) sounds like rain, the buk sounds like thunder, the jing (large gong) represents wind, and the gwaengari (small symbol) represents lightning. Poongmul comes from Korean agricultural tradition dating back thousands of years. In the past it has been used to celebrate harvest and repel evil spirits, but today is performed to celebrate traditional Korean culture. Korean Folk Art Club can be reached at [email protected].

May Cheung, Nick Chounlapane, Sakura Lin, and Jon Shin performing “Make Our Love Work, Pabo!”

Featuring songs: “Ibabo” by Wondergirls, “My Love” by Justin Timberlake, and “Make It Work” by Neyo

Sakura and I both love to freestyle and oftentimes to Korean music. We really wanted choreograph our own routine, mixing in American and Korean music. One day a KSA meeting, there was talk of K-night and whatnot and our eyebrows rose in interest. Putting a little more thought into it, we decided on a couple’s routine, recruited Nick and Jon to join us. None of us has had any professional experience with doing hip-hop and R&B routine – needless to say it’s taken a lot of work but of course all worth it =). Our routine traces the ups and downs of a relationship (in a nutshell). It starts off cute, with us dancing to Ibabo and both couples just sparking interest. We transition to My Love; the attraction gets more serious and complicated as do our steps. Things are lala in couple’s land as we all finally get together but we trouble brews as we start to fight. The last song takes the audience through the couple’s struggle to work out their problems.

Skit: “Trading Places” directed by Nuree Kwon

The skit is about 2 friends switching bodies. They get into a fight because they don’t understand what he/she is going through. When they switch bodies, they see how hard it is to be the other so they become really good friends afterwards.

Fan Dance & Sword Dance directed by Euna Kim & Minji Kim

Buchaechum is a traditional form of Korean dance, usually performed by groups of female dancers. They use fans painted with pink peony blossoms and display a show of dance. In the dance being performed, the dancers represent images using the fans eg. flowers, butterflies and waves. They wear hanbok, the Korean traditional dress in bright colors.

Jayne Yi, Jenny Jinhee Lee, Diana Park, and Nuree Kwon performing “Nobody” by Wondergirls, “Ah” by After School, and “Circus” by Britney Spears

Our performance begins with the latest hit song in Korea, ‘Nobody’, from the popular girl group, Wonder Girls. Although ‘Nobody’ is originally an upbeat song, we decided to dance to the ballad version to have variety and to expose a different version of the song the public may not be familiar with. To change pace, our second song is “Ah,” the first hit single of the newly created Korean pop group, After School. This song became a quick hit single in Korea, as well as the States, with its energetic tune and catchy lyrics. Last but not least, our final song is directly from America’s latest hits, Circus. Originally performed by the infamous Britney Spears, the 9-membered girl pop group, SNSD a.k.a. Girl’s Generation, re-choreographed this song in a recent dance battle performance. Preparing for this year’s Korean Night was challenging, but mostly exciting and fun. We were able to become more exposed to the current pop-culture in Korea, while incorporating our Korean-American perspectives to their popular music. Overall, it was an enjoyable and rewarding experience for all of us.

Page 13: KSA_Korean Night'09, Program Book

Caroline Kil feat Brian Chong singing “By Myself” by Tiffany of SNSD (Girls Generation)

This song is a slow ballad which is currently being featured in a Korean drama. The lyrics portray a scenario of forbidden love. The song is written from the princess’s perspective, where she’s trying to say, “If we cannot meet in this world, let us meet in the next.”. Hence, despite the situation, she is still getting by in this lifetime…BY HERSELF.

Why I perform for K-Night: For me personally, one of the few reasons for wanting to participate in K-night is to have fun. I’m not performing because I consider myself to be an “amazing singer.” Quite frankly, I don’t even find myself to be good at all. But most importantly, being able to perform in front of a crowd of people, not only does it help to build confidence in one’s self, but it allows you to share your interest with others as well. I always wanted to perform a duet with someone, and fortunately, I was able to find a partner this year with Caroline.

UB Tae Kwon Do performance

We’re the UB Tae Kwon Do team. For over a decade we have gathered people on campus to enjoy the most popular martial art in the world, Tae Kwon Do. Although we cover all aspects of Tae Kwon Do, including self defense, forms, and one-step sparring, we are a competition oriented club. In other words, we go to 3-5 competitions a year. This K-Night, we will be showing you all the aspects of Tae Kwon Do, from forms to sparring, self defense to a skit, you’ll see it all!

Junghee Bitnah Lee singing “Do you hear…” by Tae Yun of SNSD (Girls Generation)

I will be singing a song called “Deul li na yo (Do you hear…)” by Tae-Yun. Tae-Yun is a leader from SNSD (Girls Generation), and she became even more famous with this song. This song is an OST from a famous Korean drama called “Beethoven Virus.”

Junghee Bitnah Lee, Hyun Ji Park, Ji Young Lee, Ji Young An, Mia Lee, Soo Ryung Kim, Joo Young Song, Tracy Cheon, and Seul Gi Kweon performing “Gee” by SNSD (Girls Generation)

We will be performing the dance called “Gee” by SNSD (Girls Generation). SNSD is a Korean idol group composed of 9 girls. SNSD debuted on August 2007. They have been winning the first place in a show called “Music bank” for 10 weeks straight with this song “Gee”. We are performing this song at Korean Night to introduce a popular music in Korea. We are wearing colorful skinny jeans and white shirts, a new trend that they made by wearing in “Gee” performance. This song is famous for the cute and lively dance. The colorful skinny jeans, therefore, are essential for this song because they make the stage and the dance look more vivid and trendy.

~The present and future KSA e-board for meeting me at 7am several times to go throw a few

~K-Night flyers and postcards around campus (when I mean around, I mean all over).
