An introduction to GCSE English at Compass School Southwark
Ozymandias
I met a traveller from an antique landWho said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stoneStand in the desert. Near them on the sand,Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frownAnd wrinkled lip and sneer of cold commandTell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'Nothing beside remains. Round the decayOf that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,The lone and level sands stretch far away".
Our Mission Statement
To inspire, through the love of language and literature,
independent, creative thinkers; students who are not afraid to speak up for what’s right and question
what’s wrong.
KS4 Outline – Interleaved Teaching – Year 10
The new linear GCSE means that everything students study from now is relevant to their
exam.
For this reason we will be interleaving the schemes of work so that students can see the relationship between the required skills
and constantly practise them.
This means that now, more than ever, attendance is crucial to success.
L1 - A Christmas Carol
L2 - A Christmas Carol
L3: A Christmas Carol
L4 – Power and Conflict Poetry
L5: Language Section A
L6: Language Section B
KS4 Outline – Interleaved Teaching – Year 11
Year 11 have already studied all of the content for Language and Literature. This year will be about deepening knowledge,
practising exam skills and building confidence.
We know that the poetry is a major weakness and so this will be assigned a half-term rather than a lesson a week.
HT1: 4 ACC, 2 P2
HT2: 4 Poetry, 2 P1
HT3: 4 AIC, 2 P2
HT4: 4 R&J, 2 P1
Set Texts
Students should all have their own copies of the set texts. The cost has
been subsidised by the English Department.
Students need to be able to remember key quotations from all
three set texts as well as from fifteen poems.
This is why repetition and engagement at home is key – it’s not an easy feat but our students can
do it!

How can you help?
Help from parents and carers is vital to ensuring our students are successful.
You can:
- Make sure your child is in school every day and, if they really have to take a day off, that they
catch up with all missed work.
- Test them on key quotations.
- Encourage them to reread any sections of text read in class at home.
- Encourage them to watch Mr Bruff videos on YouTube.
- Encourage them to attend all revision sessions.
- Time their written responses (activities available for students on the revision wall)
- Make regular contact with their English teacher.
- Revision guides
