Session Outline •Discuss our 5 senses and which part of our body we use for each. •Focus on the language: opaque, transparent and translucent. Do they children know what these mean and can they name some items which fit in each category? Show the children the different googles and ask which is opaque/ translucent/ transparent. Explain that the children are gong to work in pairs to follow a texture trail. No. 1 wear the goggles first, no. 2 will be the guide (they will swap over). Explain that the rope will guide the way for the trail and so the partner wearing the goggles must keep hold of this rope at all times. Along the way are various objects attached to the rope. The guide should help their partner wearing the goggles along the rope route and to feel the objects, showing empathy and awareness of safety. The partner wearing goggles should describe the mystery object’s materials and properties using scientific vocabulary to their partner (without peeping past the translucent or opaque goggles)! They will start by wearing the transparent goggles. Part way along the course there will be a basket to swap them for translucent goggles. Further along, there will be another basket to swap them for an opaque blindfold. Once complete, they will swap over and do the trail again. (An adult may need to put the goggles back into the correct baskets first.) Ensure you have enough adults along the trail to keep watch and assist as necessary. Ensure any hazards have been removed beforehand. Differentiation: HA: Can they describe the objects’ material and properties to their partner using scientific vocabulary? LA: Help and guidance with the trail. Extension: Have another go on the texture trail with no goggles and compare how the objects feel and look the second time around. Can they describe all of the objects fully? Lesson Objectives Children will be able to name and describe a variety of materials. They can work in paris cooperatively to follow a texture trail in their outdoor environment to explore how things look and feel through transparent, translucent and opaque goggles. Resources • Blindfolds, clear goggles, goggles with translucent covering - enough for one between 2. • 4 baskets with Goggle Trail Signs Set up a ‘Texture Trail’ beforehand in your outdoor area- see Outdoor Learning Site Development Ideas: Texture Trail for guidance. Place a basket of clear goggles at the start with sign 1, a basket with translucent goggles 1/3 into the trail with sign 2, a basket with blindfolds 2/3 into the trail with sign 3, and a basket with sign 4 at the end.
