1. Are you on a tight construction schedule? TheMadushanhydroelectricdamislocatedontheRedRiverinYunnanProvince,People’sRepublicofChina.Withaheightof107metres,lengthof353metresandawatercapacityof552millioncubicmetres,itisamajordamthatprovideselectricitytohundredsofthousandsofpeople.
Whencracksinthedam’supstreamconcretewallsbegantosurfaceduetoimmensehydrostaticpressure,thestructure’sowners–RedRiverGuangyuanHydropowerDevelopmentCo.Ltd.–knewtheywereupagainstamassivechallenge.Thedamneededtoremaininservice,makingplanningandco-ordinationdifficultfortrades.Inaddition,theownerhadconcernsthattraditionalmembranewaterproofingandpolyurethanecoatingsystemswouldn’tbeeffectiveoreasytouse
duetoinclementweatheron-site.Theownerwasalsoalreadymovingforwardonanexpansionprojectonthedam,buildingadditionalinfrastructureandincreasingitsoverallcapacity.Itwouldbeabusysite,andrepairworkneededtohappenasquickly,efficientlyandeffectivelyaspossible.
Becauseconcretewillcrackifnotproperlyplacedorcured,waterproofingwithatrustedandguaranteedsystemprovidesextraprotectionfordamwallsandthesteelrebarreinforcementswithin.Ifwaterenterscracksinconcrete,itcandamagethereinforcingsteelbelowtheconcretesurface.Asthesteelcorrodes,itexpands,whichleadstofurthercrackingandwateringress.Overtime,theconcretedeterioratesandfails–thiscanresultindevastatingfloods.
Anexampleofthisoccurredin2005whentheTaumSaukpumpedstorageplantinMissouri,U.S.A.,experiencedafailureinitsupperdam.Acomputersoftwareproblem,intandemwithapreexistingleakageissueintheconcrete,ledtomorethanfourmillioncubicmetresofwatertoppingthedamwallsandbeingreleasedintotheriverbelowovera12minute
Waterproofing the
Madushan Dam
Before crews could start on waterproofing the Madushan Dam, more than 1.3 million cubic metres of earth were excavated.

laterinthelifeoftheconcrete,theincomingwaterwilltriggerfurthercrystalgrowth,keepingthestructurewatertightoveritslifespan.Theyrecognizedthesystemwouldnotonlyfixthecracks,butwouldincreasetheresistanceofchloridepenetrationintotheconcreteandimprovethestructure’soveralldurability.
KrystolT1andT2isatwo-stepintegralsystemthatisbrush-appliedontoexistingconcretestructures.Onceapplied,thecrystalsgrowdeepintotheexistingconcrete.
Atotalof12,000squaremetresofconcretehavebeentreatedwithapproximately40tonnesofKryton’sT1andT2system.

Integralsystemscanadddecadestothelifeofaconcretestructure.Unlikemembranesystemsthatcandeteriorateovertime,integralsystemsbecomepartoftheconcretematrix,waterproofingfromtheinsideout.Thisgivesthesesystemsaddedreliabilityoverotherwaterproofingsystemsastheycannotbepuncturedortorn.Inaddition,integralsystemswon’tbewornawaybyconstant
exposuretowater,saltsorothercontaminantsandarenotaffectedbyUVraysorextremetemperatures.Finally,integralsystemsareagreensolution–theycanextendtheserviceablelifeofstructuresandalsoallowtheconcretetoberecycledafteritsusefullifeisover.Forhydroelectric

Chinaishometothelargesthydroelectricdamintheworld–theThreeGorgesDam.SpanningtheYangtzeRiver,thedamwallis2,309metreslong,185metreshighand115metresthickatitsbase.Inall,morethan27millioncubicmetresofconcreteand463,000tonnesofsteelwereusedtobuildthewall.
Thedamcontains32mainelectricitygenerators,sixofwhicharestillunderconstruction.Injustoneyearofoperation,thedamgeneratedenoughelectricitytocovermorethanonethirdofitsbuildingcosts.
Crews applied T1 and T2 to the dam’s walls to prevent water leakage and increase the durability of the structure.

AttherecentAmericanConcreteInstitute(ACI)conventioninChicago,theNationalInstituteforStandardsandTechnologygaveapresentationtotheBoardtoaskfortheACI’scollaborationandsupportinrevampingstandardsfortheconcreteconstructionofnuclearpowerstations.Whatbecameapparentaswelistenedtothegoalsthatneedtobeachievedtoevenbeginconstructionisthetremendousamountofworkthatneedstobedonetoincorporate30yearsoftechnologyandprocesschange.Therecanbenoconflictsamongallofthesestandardsandcodes.Andstandardsandcodesneedtobeagreeduponbytheappropriateregulatorybodiesonverytighttimelines.
ThetimecrunchisinpartduetoUSPresidentObama’sadministrationapprovingan$8.3billionconditionalloanguaranteetostartbuildingthefirstnuclearpowerplantsintheUSinmorethanthreedecades.Thatkindofincentiveisgoodnewsfortheglobalconcreteindustry.Butitalsoraisesconcerns
aboutstandardsandsafetythatmustbeaddressedbeforethepublicisreassuredthatnuclearpowerissafepower.Itraisesconcernsaswellintheconstructionindustrythatthoseregulationsnotoverridetheeconomicsofproducingnuclearpower.
Constructionstandardsandsafetyhavechangedradicallysincethefirstcommercialnuclearpowerstationswerebuiltinthe1950s.Constructionofanynewnuclearfacilitymustbebasedonalignmentwithup-to-datestandardsandcodescitedintheUSNuclearRegulatoryCommission’sregulatorydocuments.Butalargepartofthosecodesandstandardshavenotbeenupdatedsincethe1980s.Canwecatchupintime,andwithsufficientinputanddeliberation,tore-assurethepublic,andtheconstructionindustry?
Therearemorethan6,000standardsandcodescitedforconstructingaGenerationIIIreactor.About600ofthosestandardsandcodesrelatetoconcrete,reinforced

Theaveragelifespanofaconcretewatertankis25to40years.Overthattime,theconcreteresistsconstanthydrostaticpressureofvaryingdegreesfromtheinsideandoutside,isincontactwithchlorineinwaterthatsoftensitssurface,andwilldevelopcracksduetodrying,shrinkageandsettling.Theseconditions,intandemwithconcrete’snaturalporosity,canleadtoleaks,corrosionandareducedservicelife.
Sohowdoyourepairadeterioratingwatertank?Whatisthebestwaytokeepthewaterinandcontaminantsoutforthelongestperiodoftimepossible?And,howdoyouprotectthesteelreinforcementwithintheconcretewalls?
How to Repair a Water TankWatertanksshouldbeinspectedbyaprofessionalengineereveryonetotwoyears.Theengineerwillexaminethetankforsignsofrebarcorrosion,analyzecrackpatternsinyourstructure,evaluatetheoverallconditionoftheconcreteanddeterminewhetherthetankshouldberepairedorreplacedaltogether.Youshouldplantoshutyourtankdownforuptotwodaystodrain,cleanandinspectallthesurfaces.
Oncethetankhasbeendrainedanddisinfectedwithchlorinatedsolutionandpressurewasher,youarereadytobeginlookingforproblemareas.
Keeping Water Tanks Watertight
Failed epoxy injection in this 30 year old water tank led to substantial cracking requiring repairs.
This tank lid was not sealed properly, leading to water leakage from the inside out.
First,checktheexteriorwallsofthetank(ifaccessible)forvisibleleaks.Oldepoxyinjectionrepairscanfail,leadingtodegradationofnotonlytheconcretebutthesteelreinforcementinsidethestructure’swalls.Next,look

atthesupportcolumnsinsidethetank.Thesecolumnsoftencorrodeatthebasewheretheyarethoroughlysaturatedbywater.Inseverecases,theconcretemaybewornaway,leavingexposedrebarthatneedstobeprotected.Consultanengineerbeforeremovingdeterioratedconcretefromcolumns,especiallyifthisrequireschippinginsidetherebarcage.Alsolookforhoneycombingontheoutsideandinsideoftheconcretewalls.Poorlyconsolidatedconcretecanleadtohoneycombingandtheseareaswillactivelyleakunlessrepaired.Finally,checkthetanklid.Toooften,watertanklidsarenotwaterproofedorsealed.Thiscanresultincontaminatedstandingwaterontheoutsideofthetankmakingitswayintothewaterinthetank–amajorhealthhazard.
Ensureallcracksanddefectsarerepairedwithawaterproofingsolution.Oncecomplete,disinfectthestructureagainwithachlorinatedsolutionandpressurewasher.Thiswillensurethetankisreadytoholdanytypeofwaterincludingpotablewater.Whenthetankhasbeensuccessfullycleaned,fillitwithtwoinchesofwater,drainthewaterandthenfillagaincompletely.
How Age Affect RepairsTheolderthewatertank,themorelikelyrepairsandmaintenancearegoingtoberequired.Extraprecautionneedstobetakenwhenrepairingthetankiftheconcreteisolder.Whencleaningthetankwithapressurewasher,olderconcreteismorelikelytobecomelooseandfallaway.Youneedtobepreparedtoplacenewconcreteintheseareas.Theengineeryoubringonyourprojectwillbeabletohelp
youmakethatdecision.Iftheconcretesurfaceisrelativelysoundbutisshowingsignsofdeterioration,resurfacingthewallscanprotecttheconcretefromfurtherdeterioration.
The Old vs New Way of Waterproofing Traditionally,concretetankshavenotincorporatedawaterproofingsystemuntilaproblemhassurfaced.CrackshavebeenfilledwithOakumtostopwaterflow,epoxycoatingshavebeenappliedorpolyurethaneplasticlinershavebeenweldedtogetherinsidethetanktoblockwaterleakage.Whilethesemethodsmayhaveprovidedtemporaryrelief,nonehaveprovenaseffectiveasintegralcrystallinewaterproofing.Cracksanddefectsrepairedwithcrystallinesystemswilloutlasttraditionalepoxyorurethanerepairs.Crystallinerepairscanalsobecomplementedbyapplyingafullcrystallinesurfacetreatmenttoprotecttheconcretewallsfromfurtherdamage.Usingintegralsystemsforwatertankrepairscanprotecttanksfromdeteriorationandextendthestructure’sservicelife,providedthattherepairsaremadebeforethedeteriorationbecomestoosevere.Becauseofthis,thepopularityofcrystallinesystemsisboomingandwatertanksaroundtheworldarestandingthetestoftime.
