Renewal Applicant Continuation Rules

1. Students must submit verification of continuing education enrollment from attending school by submitting a transcript of their grades indicating you have maintained a 3.0 GPA, to the NSSScholarship Department at the conclusion of EACH school year before they will be considered eligi-ble to receive payment for a second, third, or fourth year grant. These transcripts must be receivedby JULY 15TH. NO EXCEPTIONS, THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. Do not rely on parents, friends, oryour agent to get your information in. If your paperwork is not in the home office by the deadline youwill not receive a check!

2. If you are transferring to another school, you MUST notify the NSS Home Office IN WRITING bysending in an acceptance letter to prove you will be attending a new school full time, by JULY 15TH,BEFORE checks are issued. No renewal checks will be issued after September 15th of each year forany reason.

Peter V. Rovnianek Scholarship Fund

The following rules will determine eligibility in applying for a National Slovak Society, Peter Vitazoslav (PVR)Scholarship Grant:

1. The applicant must be a member of the National Slovak Society (NSS) for a minimum of two (2) yearsprior to receiving a PVR Scholarship Grant. Membership will be verified by the Home Office.

2. The minimum amount of insurance required for eligibility is $10,000 of PERMANENT life insurance or$5,000.00 of annuity deposits. The insurance must be in force at the time of application and be main-tained throughout the scholarship period.

3. Eligible to apply are all student NSS members whose scholastic records, including College Board Examinations qualify them for acceptance by a college, university (4 years); junior college, nursing,trade, technical or business school (2 years) or other institution approved by the NSS National Assembly.

4. All applications must be accompanied by a transcript of the latest high school scholastic record of theapplicant. For those already attending college, only college transcripts need to be submitted.

5. All applications must be accompanied by proof of the applicant’s acceptance as a full-time student byan accredited college, university, junior college, business or trade school. Please list ONLY the schoolthat you are going to attend, not all of the schools that you have applied and been accepted by.

6. All applications must be accompanied by a resume or biographical sketch of the applicant, not toexceed two hundred (200) words, along with a recent photograph for publication in the society’s maga-zine.

7. All applicants must submit proof of fraternal activity. This activity may be participation in nationalor local activities, holding elective office in a fraternal benefit society, or similar fraternal involvement.In lieu of fraternal activity, an applicant may substitute community service or volunteeractivity with a non-profit organization. (e.g. Hospitals, Red Cross, Juvenile Diabetes or similarcharitable organizations.) Applicants must submit verification signed by an assembly officer or by anadult in charge of the community service or volunteer activity.

8. No application will be considered unless all requirements are met and fulfilled. Transcripts and allother forms included with the application shall be the property of the PVR Scholarship Fund and theNational Slovak Society and will not be returned to the applicant.

9. In the event that a PVR Scholarship is granted, it shall be the responsibility of the student to remainin school full-time and to maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher for the remainder installments of the grant to be received.

10. The deadline for submitting applications for scholarship grants is MAY 1st of each year.Applications can be obtained from the Home Office or your local assembly. Mrs. Claus sneaks a little kiss to Santa.The girls lead the way to singing

Christmas carol.

Region 7 Christmas Party was a great success. Children enjoyed Santa andMrs. Claus visit which included gifts, story time and photo shoots. Refreshmentswere served and everyone left with a little extra Christmas happiness.

Assembly L102Members of Assembly L102 did a

Breakfast with Santa and over 300people were in attendance. Great timewas had by all. Such a rewarding dayto see the joy on all the kids faces andtheir parents.

On January 11th, Assembly L102 held their annual Holiday Party. Great to socializewith everyone who braved the cold weatherto be there.

Paper Mache Eggs

Materials you will need:Assortment of fun size packets of

Starburst Jellybeans, Milk or DarkChocolate Eggs, and M&M'S MilkChocolate Candies for Easter

10 balloons (approximately 9 inches)

3 bottles white glue (non-toxic)Old newspapers30 sheets brightly colored tissue

paper1 medium inexpensive paintbrush10 aluminum foil cupcake linersScissorsEaster grass, optional

What you need to do:Lightly inflate 10 balloons.

Prepare a glue mixture by diluting twoparts of glue with one part water; setaside.

Tear the tissue paper into 1 1/2-inch strips.

Cover the balloons with several layers of tissue strips that are "paint-ed" with the glue mixture. Overlap theedges of the strips, completely cover-ing the entire balloon. Using the cup-cake liner as a holder, set a balloonon each liner to dry overnight.

When completely dry, cut off theballoon's knot, deflating it. Trim thetop, creating a 4-inch hole. Reach inand remove the deflated balloon, andthen fill it with Easter Grass and anstarburst jellybeans, Milk or DarkChocolate Eggs, and M&M'S MilkChocolate Candies for Easter. Arrange

the eggs by themselves, or in agroup on a bed of Easter grass.Makes 10 eggs.

NSS YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Rules And Regulations

The National Fraternal Congress of America, through their “Americas Promise”Program, has encouraged their member societies to increase their awareness ofthe contributions of youth to the fraternal benefit system. In response to that challenge, the National Assembly, in 1998, voted to estab-

lish a “Youth Achievement Award” that is similar to our “Fraternalist of the Year Award” for adults. The contest is open to all NSS Youth Membersunder the age of 21.

RATIONALE: The award is directed at youth who do outstanding fraternal work inthese four (4) areas: a) At their school/work, b) In their community, c) In theirchurch, d) In their local assembly.

NOMINATION: Youth members can be nominated by any adult member of the NSS or through their local assembly. A document detailing the qualifications of the Youth Member being nominated must be attached to thisform and submitted to the Home Office. A Youth Member may be nominated each year either until they reach their twenty-first (21st) birthday oruntil they are selected to receive this award. Nomination forms are available from the Home Office or on our web site at www.nsslife.org under"Forms/Fraternal."

DEADLINE: Deadline for nominations to be in the Home Office is April 1st.

AWARD: The winning youth will receive a $500.00 check and will be announcedin the “National News”, the “Youth Circle Magazine” and listed on our web siteat www.nsslife.org under "Youth Achievement Award".

JUDGING: An independent judge, appointed by the NSS Life President, will reviewall nominations and make a determination of the winner. The National President,or an appointee, shall be the final authority on all matters involving this fraternal benefit. The winner of the NSS “Youth AchievementAward” will be notified by the Home Office of their selection. DEADLINE: April 1st ofEach Year

MAY ART CONTEST — DEADLINE IS MAY 1ST

The rules are as follows:1. Contest is open to all members of the National Slovak Societybetween the ages of 5 and 16.

2. Only one entry is permitted per member, per category.3. Contestants may create their artwork using: (Paint by numbers, stencils or tracing will not be accepted)

a. Paint (pastels, watercolor, oil, tempera, and cesium)b. Crayons (wax or liquid)c. Ink/Pencild. Charcoale. Glue, construction paper, glitter

4. The Artistic and Posters categories may be ANY size up to 11x14 inches and must be mounted on a mat board or posterboard for display purposes. (This year’s Poster Category – Peace, Love & Understanding)

5. The Greeting Card category must be 5 ½ x 8 ½ folded. Please protect when shipping. This year it’s a Mothers Day Card

6. All entries must include; name, address, phone number, age, policy number, assembly/circle number, along with your t- shirt size and should be clearly printed on the back of each entry. For your convenience, there will be a form printed in the April Issue of the National Newsletter that you may cut out and place on the back of your entry.

7. Please indicate t-shirt size by the following size chart available:

a. Youth sizes - YS and YMb. Adult sizes - AS, AM, AL and AXL

8. Contest shall be judged under the following levels and ages for all 3 categories:

a. Picasso Level - Ages 5, 6 & 7b. Rembrandt Level - Ages 8, 9 & 10c. Michelangelo Level - Ages 11, 12 & 13 d. Van Gogh Level - Ages 14, 15 & 16*

9. Prizes awarded in each level of every category shall be as follows:a. First Place $50.00 b. Second Place $25.00c. Third Place $15.00

10. All entrants will receive a NSS Life T-shirt.
