MAHLER ”Blumine”

BERNSTEIN Symphony No. 1 “Jeremiah” Britt Brown, mezzo-soprano

From Maestro Hangen: Let’s pay tribute to my teacher, Leonard Bernstein, with his music and the music of composers who were important to him: Copland, Gershwin, Mahler, and Franco Castagnone. Award-winning vocalist Britt Brown is in the spotlight for Bernstein’s emotional First Symphony.

“(Ms. Brown’s) voice is a burnished-gold instrument of power and beauty, over which she maintains impressive control.” – classical-scene.com

BALAKIREV Overture on Three Russian Folk Songs

KABALEVSKY Cello Concerto No. 2 Nathaniel Taylor, cello

TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 5

From Maestro Hangen: Basking in the familiarity of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Fifth,’ this concert opens with traditional Russian folk songs in a symphonic setting by Balakirev and features a remarkable rising star cellist, Nathaniel Taylor, in Kabalevsky’s dynamic and soulful concerto.

“A real discovery! Nate Taylor has emerged as a terrific musician who plays with passion and charisma.” – Maestro Bruce Hangen

A Symphonic LifeSaturday, January 26, 2019 at 7:30pm

SIBELIUS Suite from Belshazzar’s Feast

MAHLER Symphony No. 1 “Titan”

From Maestro Hangen: Mahler is back! His writing still wows audiences with extremes of tenderness, joy, and triumph. Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’ spirited music will warm us up and the winner of Indian Hill Music School’s annual Student Concerto Competition will bring youthful energy to the stage.

“A symphony must be like the world. It must contain everything.” – Gustav Mahler

Best of BrahmsSaturday, February 23, 2019 at 7:30pm

BRAHMS Hungarian Dances, Nos. 3 & 10

BRAHMS Symphony No. 3

BRAHMS Piano Concerto No. 1 Ya-Fei Chuang, piano

From Maestro Hangen: Johannes Brahms is the favored composer of many a musician and concert-goer: Classical but Romantic; expressive but stoic; forward-looking but holding fast to old traditions of style. His Third Symphony and the monumental Piano Concerto No. 1 anchor this program with guest soloist Ya-Fei Chuang. We begin with a couple of Hungarian Dances to whet the appetite for more!

“Through a universe of color, dynamics and articulations that were entirely her own, Ms. Chuang gave us a world of feelings, visions and memories…” – Boston Music Intelligencer

MASTERWORKS

Making HistorySaturday, March 23, 2019 at 7:30pm

VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Bucolic Suite

RAUTAVAARA Clarinet Concerto Richard Stoltzman, clarinet

BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 5

From Maestro Hangen: I think you would agree that Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is one of the most important classical masterworks – as astonishing today as it was 210 years ago! Also stunning is the music of Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara: a sonorous, ethereal, atmospheric, and compelling work featuring the world-famous clarinetist, Richard Stoltzman.

“Richard Stoltzman is a national treasure and should be so declared.” – San Francisco Chronicle

Showcasing Our OwnSaturday, April 27, 2019 at 7:30pm

ROSSINI William Tell Overture

VIVALDI Concerto for 4 Violins in B Minor Alice Hallstrom, Angel Hernandez, Anabelle Tirado, Susan Jensen, violins

BACH Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 Peter Sulski and Amelia Hollander Ames, violas

ELGAR Enigma Variations

From Maestro Hangen: Yet another fascinating twist to Showcasing Our Own! Vivaldi’s lively and well-known concerto features four of our string players, while the violas get their chance to shine in Bach’s Brandenburg. And we’ll bring the concert (and the season) to an end with the exceedingly Romantic music of Sir Edward Elgar.

“When we play for you, the attention and energy you bring inspires us to find new ideas and colors in the music, and truly helps the music come alive for us all.” – Alice Hallstrom, Concertmaster, Orchestra of Indian Hill
