    Memorandum

    To: Leslie Mateer

    From: Megan Kraus

Subject: Cover Letter and Resume Analysis

    Date: 23 September 2012

The main objective of this memo is to present to you the analysis of the two job positions I haveselected to write the cover letter and resumes for and the thought process behind them. The two

job positions I have chosen were with Metso Automation as a Project Engineer and Rockwell

    Automation as an Industrialization Engineer. This memo is organized into three main sections;

the Audience Analysis, Job Description and Rhetorical Analysis. The Audience Analysis willdescribe the work environments and cultures of the companies as well as the audience member

who is likely to read the application items contained in this packet. The Job Description will

contain information about the specific positions within each company and the RhetoricalAnalysis will discuss the various differences made to each resume and cover letter and why the

    specific revisions were made.

    Audience Analysis

    Metso Automation

Metso Automation provides technology and services to customers in various industries including

mining, construction, pulp and paper, power, and oil and gas. Metsos headquarters is located inHelsinki, Finland and is present in over 50 countries delivering sustainable and profitable

solutions to their customers. Their vision and mission are defined as Working as One to beNumber One by contributing to a more sustainable world through helping their customersprocess natural resources into valuable products and solutions. (1)

Metsos organizational culture is very team oriented and operated. This is evident within

Metsos values which include performing together and respecting each other while driving

customer success. Their leadership principles also highlight a team work-culture by emphasizingintegrity and building inspiration and trust over the successes of any individual. A project

manager is the person who would directly read job applications for this position because the

project manager wants to be able to find the right candidate who can work with his or her team.

    Rockwell Automation

Rockwell Automation provides industrial automation, power, control and information solutions

to customers within the industrial industry. Rockwells headquarters is located in Milwaukee,Wisconsin and is known as one of the largest industrial automation companies in the world

employing over 21,000 people in more than 80 countries. It is ranked 411 on the Fortune 500

Company list and ranked one of the most ethical companies in the world. (2)

Rockwells corporate culture is focused on customer success through better optimization, risk

management and quick responses to the changing market. They value the individual and the

individuals innovative thinking by highlighting their successes with customer successes.Rockwell has high ethical standards with 100% compliance that is vigorously monitored

throughout all their business activities. The human resources department would most likely read

through prospective job applications to make sure specific qualifications are met before acandidate is considered.

    Job Description

    Metso Automation

Metso is searching for someone to fill their Project Engineer position. This position requires

much interaction with the project team, management, development, sales, and production

departments. With these requirements, the responsibilities include good communication, both

written and verbal, and team work skills. The job advertisement also highlighted the candidatehaving technical skills including controls design, testing, and field support. Metsos ideal

candidate is someone with a technical background who can effectively communicate his or herideas to the various departments involved in the project.

    Rockwell Automation

Rockwell hires multiple Industrialization Engineer positions within their company, each working

on a new innovative project with the changing market. Rockwell is looking for a candidate that

can perform work based on theoretical engineering principles and apply them to the changingmarket with little guidance. With this being said, the candidate must be knowledgeable and a

leader in their field as well as possess the ability to think innova tively. Rockwells idealcandidate is someone with a strong technical background who can work independently and

continue to develop ways to better the standard of living.

    Rhetorical Analysis

    Metso Automation

In my cover letter to Metso, I emphasized my internship with Ashland to show that I have

developed professional communication skills as well as procured experience working with a

team which is something that Metso values greatly. I felt that my engineering experiences weremore important than my education which is why I wrote about my education second. Within my

education section, I tried to capture my process safety class as being one of the more important

classes in my curriculum. I wanted to illustrate my ability to understand and develop process

flow and control diagrams which is a skill that not many engineering undergraduates procure.

I used a standard resume format and style so that it would be easier for a recruiter to quickly find

the information he or she needed. Currently being an undergrad, I felt that my education wasone of the more important items on my resume and made this my first section. There were a few

main focal points to consider when revising the content of my resume. One of these points was

the team-oriented work culture. Because Metso stressed the value of working on teams, I made

sure that my engineering experiences highlighted my ability to not only work with others butalso demonstrated my ability to communicate effectively. I believe that my leadership section

also emphasizes my ability to work with others and the show that I can take on responsibilities

which is the section right after my experiences. I put my software skills and involvement last onmy resume because I feel that Metso values experience over skill sets.

    Rockwell Automation

In my cover letter to Rockwell, I highlighted my technical background by adding my design

project into the first content section as well as my work experience as a test engineer at

NAVSEA. I also tried to capture my leadership which I used to illustrate my ability to analyze,

test, initiate and lead different projects within Penn State. In my 2

    nd

content section, Iemphasized my work with the safety controls on the process diagram because Rockwell has a

    strong ethical reputation.

I used a similar standard resume style and format for the same reason I used a standard format

for Metso. Rockwell really stressed a strong technical background. With this being said, I made

my education section the first thing on my resume followed by my software skills. With both ofthese sections near the top, I emphasized my knowledge of engineering computer applications as

well as my education. I placed my leadership above my engineering experience because I felt

that Rockwell was looking for a strong candidate who can handle responsibility and possiblylead a team in a new design project. Within my experience section, I highlighted my on-campus

job which is enforcing safety rules which supports Rockwells reputation of being one of themost ethical companies. I also made sure to keep the bullets where I demonstrated technical

ability under each work experience and added in my EDSGN design project. I kept myinvolvement section last because I felt that Rockwell wasnt looking for a well-rounded

candidate but a very technically sound candidate.

During my internship with Ashland Inc. in Bangor, ME, I worked with a team of 3 othermembers testing, analyzing and promoting Ashlands chemicals to the mill managers and

workers at the Verso PaperBucksport and Sappi Fine PaperSkowhegan paper mills. I was

able to help my team members perform testing trials on the paper machines, analyze the results
