Report of the General Committee

The General Committee submits its report together with the audited financial statements of the Kowloon Cricket Club (the “Club”) for the year ended 31st July 2015.

Principal activitiesThe principal activities of the Club are to provide sporting, recreational and clubhouse facilities for the members.

In accordance with Article 6 of the Club’s Articles of Association, all General Committee Members who have served for 4 years shall not be eligible for re-election for a period of 2 years, but they shall be eligible for election as an Officer of the Club or as a sport section representative. An eligible member may only be nominated for election to one position at an Annual General Meeting, either to be one of the Officers of the Club or a member of the General Committee.

Review of the Club’s BusinessThe Club operates under the Clubs (Safety of Premises) Ordinance, Cap 376 and is situated in Cox’s Road, Yaumatei, a premier location in Kowloon. The Club was granted an extension of the private recreational lease for fifteen years until December 2026 under a number of conditions including that the Club would open its sports facilities to eligible outside bodies as agreed and approved by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The General Committee continues to manage the Club (with the assistance of a Management Team) and aims to maintain high standards of service levels together with improving Club facilities for the betterment of all members.

The Club’s results in the financial year outperformed its budget, due primarily to higher than expected revenues and vigilant cost control. Ongoing upgrading of Club facilities in the financial year included renovation of the Coffee Shop and Staff/Office Area enabling members and staff alike to enjoy newly refurbished environments.

Key Performance Indicators (“KPIs”) The Club aims at achieving a breakeven performance from an operational point of view while maintaining high standards of service. At the same time, the Club continues to accumulate sufficient funds for future developments. To these ends, KPIs have been established to help monitoring of the Club’s finances.

Environmental policies and performances The Club is in the process of creating a new member only section on the Club’s website aiming at encouraging members to view Club related articles, such as the Annual Report, using a computer based device. The Club now only sends a physical copy of the Annual Report to members on demand saving print some 1,900 copies of the Annual Report. Other environmental protection measures include the change of the existing carboy water dispensers to drinking water fountains with UV filtration systems. We will continue with our recycling effort by implementing recycling of card board, glass, paper and plastic. The Club has introduced bag levy charges to include the cost of plastic containers used for takeaway food thereby encouraging members to bring their own.

The Club continued to pass used cooking oil to a licensed biodiesel company and in August 2015, 165 kg biodiesel was produced from our used cooking oil; the equivalent of a reduction of 433 kg carbon dioxide or the planting of 19 trees.

Another example is the decision taken a number of years ago that no sharks fin would be offered in our food and beverage outlets to try to preserve the world’s marine eco-system. In addition, it is the Club’s policy to purchase water bottles which are made from recycled materials.

To comply with the Building Energy Efficiency Ordinance, we have replaced most lights with energy efficient lamps and tubes in the majority of the Club. Such areas include the Main Bar, Pro Shop, Fincher Room, Snooker Room, Grill Room, Squash Courts, Fitness Centre, Sports Hall, Male & Female changing rooms, Children’s Playroom and the Pavilion. The recently renovated Boundary Café, MacGowan Room and Staff/Office areas have also had energy efficient lamps and tubes installed. In addition, in this fiscal year the Club is planning to replace the existing inefficient chillers with more efficient and cost saving air-cooled chillers.

Sport Development and PromotionThe Club has invested considerable time and money in providing sports training to the juniors for the sustainable growth of different sports. As a result, the Club has 150 children in the Junior Cricket Training Programme, 100 children in our Mini-Hockey Training Programme and 211 children in Junior Football Training during the fiscal year. This grassroots training has developed a strong base of junior sportsmen/sportswomen to support not only the Club, but also the development of these sports in Hong Kong. In addition, the Cricket Section worked hard to promote cricket at local school level by partnering with secondary schools to provide regular cricket training to students and, in doing so, better served the community by further opening up its facilities.

The Club’s members continued to actively participate in different sport leagues organized by the national sport associations and groups including badminton, cricket, football, lawn bowls, hockey, squash, tennis, tenpin bowling, table tennis, snooker and bridge. The Club also organised various sporting events at the Club by bringing in world class athletes and local elite players to demonstrate their skills to our members and to facilitate the development of our young sportsmen and sportswomen.


The Squash Challenge Cup, a Professional Squash Association sanctioned individual international competition was organised in July 2015 and one of our Squash Female Junior Subscribers won the ladies’ championship. The lawn bowls Champion of Champions Competition was arranged by the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association and hosted by the Club in February 2015, involving the top 70 lawn bowlers in Hong Kong. The Badminton Society invited Mr. Lee Wan Wah, the former World Ranked No.1 Doubles Player from Malaysia, to conduct an exhibition match at the Club in July 2015 whilst the Tennis Section arranged the first Inter-Club Grass Court Tennis Tournament in August 2014. The Hong Kong Football Association (“HKFA”) approved our Football Section to form a team to participate in the HKFA Division 3 League that commenced in September 2014. The Kowloon Cricket Club Corporate Sixes was organised by the Cricket Section in Oct 2014 and it is expected to become an annual event to promote cricket at the corporate level in Hong Kong. We also established a new Table Tennis Society to facilitate the development of table tennis amongst our members.

Inter-section events were organized whereby members from across different sports sections came together to play against each other in a social atmosphere. Examples include the inter-section cricket event and the Graham Archer Football 7s.

Key Relationships with Members, Employees and SuppliersThe success of the Club depends primarily on the contributions from its members, provision of service by its employees and good relationships with its suppliers.

Many of our members utilize the Club on a regular basis. The sporting facilities and food and beverage outlets at the Club provide an excellent place for members’ social as well as family gatherings. The Club continues to organize a variety of events and functions on a regular basis for members and their guests and the level of patronage remains very high.

Staff retention and development is a critical issue for the Club to grow and remain competitive. Regular reviews of remuneration packages are very important to ensure that the Club is offering competitive salaries. As regards training and development, the Club has provided a variety of training programs for staff during this financial year covering all aspects of Club life.

The Club maintains an efficient system of approved suppliers for all items. Regular reviews of all existing suppliers’ performances are conducted by the Procurement/Purchasing Department to ensure all suppliers consistently meet our criteria. Price and quality comparisons with three quotations are required before major purchases are made to ensure the Club is paying a reasonable price for the quality goods.

Principal Risks FacedApart from the risks as disclosed in note 3 to the Financial Statements, the Club has adopted robust policies to manage the risks of fire, business interruption, third party liability and Directors and Officers liability. These are covered by dedicated insurance policies. To safeguard our fixed assets, we have maintained a register of assets and safeguards are in place to record their disposal. As regards data security, the Club has installed Internet Security software including Antivirus (NOD32), a firewall in our data server and router and a 3-level hierarchy has been implemented for various users purposes. Both the POS system and the Management Information System require user login.

The aging nature of many of the Club’s buildings continues to cause concern particularly as regards repairs and maintenance. Care needs to be taken to ensure that sufficient funds


are maintained for this challenge.

Important Events After The End of the YearSubsequent to the completion of a Traffic Impact Assessment, the Club commenced a submission to the Town Planning Board proposing development of new sports facilities over one of the Club’s existing lawn bowls greens. Once initial approval is obtained, the next task would be to seek the funding required to finance the project. Future DevelopmentsTo retain the status of a premier sports club in Hong Kong, the Club believes that the continuous inflow of young and high standard sports men and women are crucial. To this end, the Club is investigating increasing the number of Sporting Subscribers from the current maximum limit of 75 to 125. Such a number will still be below some comparable Clubs in Hong Kong. This proposed change not only facilitates maintaining the Club’s sporting strengths but will also further enhance the Club’s junior development programmes.

Permitted indemnity provisionsAt no time during the financial year and up to the date of this General Committee Members’ Report, there was or is, any permitted indemnity provision being in force for the benefit of any of the General Committee Members of the Club (whether made by the Club or otherwise) or an associated Club (if made by the Club).

President’s Report

It is my very great pleasure to present to Members my third Annual Report as Club President. As in the past two years, I will leave the sporting highlights of the year (and as usual there are many) to the individual sporting section and society reports.

The LeaseBoth the General Committee (GC) and the Management team continue to expend considerate effort to comply with the lease conditions imposed by the Government. Members will be aware that many schools, welfare organizations and national sports associations now use our facilities on a regular basis. The key, as always for the Club, is to meet legitimate requests as part of our involvement with the community whilst at the same time minimizing inconvenience to Members. I believe that on balance the Club has met this objective and if it continues to do so can confidently look to a long and sustainable future. However, as I have said before, Members should not underestimate the additional workload required of the Management team in terms of handling applications to

use our facilities, regular reporting back to the Government, meeting with Government officials to verify our data and conduct site inspections, etc.

Corporate GovernanceTransparency continues to be a hallmark of this General Committee and Members receive a substantial amount of information as to what is going on in the Club through a number of channels. As before, these include the monthly synopsis of GC meeting decisions and discussions, the Club Magazine (in particular the President’s and General Manager’s columns), the weekly electronic bulletin (the What’s On in KCC- WOK) and various Noticeboards to be found around the Club. I believe that the GCs over the past three years have made significant and tangible improvements in this area which I trust will become a permanent feature of the Club.

Constitutional ReformAfter completing major reviews of both the Club Articles and Bye-laws in the first two years of my Presidency, the work of the Constitution Sub-committee has turned to handling suggestions for specific and relatively minor updates and, more importantly, drafting proposed changes to the Club Articles to reflect recent major changes to the Companies Ordinance which affect KCC. One of the most significant of these is the mandatory requirement to allow for proxy voting at all General Meetings of the Club. At the time of writing, plans are being drawn up to convene a Club EGM once the relevant departments in the Government have approved our proposals. In this regard, I am especially grateful to John Luff, our Vice-President, who has spent many hours working on this very necessary exercise and I look forward to Members’ support when the resolutions are put to Members at the forthcoming EGM.

DevelopmentEndeavouring to improve the physical condition of the Club continues to be a priority of this GC. This year, the staff rest area/ changing facility project was completed. These improvements have been well received by our staff which is pleasing to note. In addition, the leaky Clubhouse roof is no more, as substantial repair/ waterproofing work was completed which should ensure there is no repetition of this perennial problem. But unfortunately, problems of inhabiting ‘old’ buildings continue to emerge. This year, it was the turn of the now 40-year old swimming pool building. Repairs, at an estimated cost of


$2 million, are scheduled to be completed in October. Any inconvenience caused to Members is of course regretted, but safety considerations must come first.

As always the GC continues to be forward looking and there are a number of new exciting initiatives which are currently being examined. A few examples- • PartialfloodlightingoftheMainGround• Installationofanelectronicscoreboard(whichcouldalsobeusedforentertainment

At the same time, the Club continues to devote considerable resources in terms of staff and money to ensure that our existing sporting facilities are maintained to the high standards which Members can reasonably expect. To give two examples, in the last financial year, the Club spent over $ 2.3M on maintaining the Main Ground and $ 1.2 M on the Lawn Bowls Greens. Less popular sports but which are nevertheless played in the Club are not overlooked and for example $180,000 was spent on repairing and upgrading the 10-pin bowling facility.

In my opinion, it is essential that the Club and the GC in particular, takes a strategic and longer-term view of the future of the Club. In this regard, and as I mentioned in my Report last year, we have been working in fact since early 2013 on an application to the Town Planning Board, which if approved, would allow the Club to seek Members’ views on the erection of a new building on our site, including expansion of the carpark. The detailed and extensive submission, prepared with the assistance of our Consultants, has been submitted to the Government, and at the time of writing, we are liaising with some of the relevant departments on various aspects of the application for which they require additional information and clarification. Personally, I believe that a project of this scale is necessary to allow the Club to continue to grow and to allow us to maintain our positon as one of the leading sporting clubs in Hong Kong and indeed, Asia.

KCC- A Sports ClubI am pleased to report that KCC continues to attract young sporting men and women. Today, we have over 180 Junior Subscribers and 75 Sporting Subscribers who together form the bulk of many of our representative teams. This is a most welcome development and one which I have personally espoused. Indeed, this is one of Government’s lease requirements, namely that we allow young sporting people to join our Club at a reasonable cost. With the average age of our Membership currently standing at 56, I see it as imperative that action is taken urgently to bring down this figure. Without this group, who will hopefully form a significant portion of our future Members, the Club would struggle to field competitive teams in the various sporting leagues in which we have a long and distinguished history. And as such, this could potentially have a detrimental effect on future lease renewal exercises.

It is for this reason that the GC has recently endorsed the sporting sections’ proposal to seek Members’ approval to increase the number of Sporting Subscribers from 75 to 125. Detailed planning is now underway and current forecast is that an EGM on this specific issue can be convened early in 2016.


Membership ProcessFollowing on from this, I consider that it would be useful for Members to understand the basis on which we select applicants to attend a formal membership interview. It is important to remember that the Club is close to the 2000 membership ceiling contained in the Articles and that therefore the number of vacancies is extremely limited and largely dependent on membership turnover which is low these days. To begin with, priority is given to Sporting Subscribers who successfully complete their 3-year undertaking to play sport for the Club. At the same time, the GC endeavours to take one or two applicants every month off the main Membership Waiting List and the List of Dependants under the age of 30 who have applied for membership in their own right. It is important to note that those invited for interview are taken off both lists according to their date of application. Unlike in the past, no exceptions are made to this rule as both the GC and Membership sub-committee believe this is the fairest way to proceed and the mechanism has been endorsed by the ICAC.

In ClosingFirstly, I wish to express my warmest and most sincere appreciation to our staff, ably led by Greg Hartigan, without whom the Club could not function. Whilst accepting that there is always room for improvement, I feel having been a Member of this wonderful Club for the past 36 years, that we are all extremely fortunate to enjoy the commitment, loyalty and capabilities of the 150 plus staff. Thank you all.

Secondly, I wish to thank all the Members and Subscribers (over 100) who contribute to the Club by volunteering their time to serve on the General Committee and various sub-committees. Without your efforts and in some cases, sacrifice, particularly in terms of time, the Club would not function as well as I believe it does today.

And thirdly, after serving on the GC for 12 years, 11 as an Officer of the Club and without a break over the past six years, I believe that it is the right time for me to step-down from the post of President and the GC. The Club today is very different from the one I joined in 1979 to play cricket. In many ways that is inevitable and a positive development, as KCC in terms of membership, facilities, the surrounding environment and in many other respects has changed – largely for the better.

Looking ahead, the challenges are many but I am confident that if everyone involved in the KCC always acts in what they believe to be the best interests of the Club and not for personal benefit, then KCC will continue to thrive for many years to come.

Treasurer’s Report

This has been a challenging year for the Club with a reported surplus dropping from $3.2 million to $2.5 million. Total revenue and other income increased by 5.1% from $76.3

million to $80.2 million and the corresponding operating expenditure increased by 7.1% from $70.2 million to $74.3 million.

The operating surplus before interest income and exchange rate gain dropped from $1.0 million to $0.6 million. With the support of the General Committee, we have adjusted the food prices but have not increased monthly subscriptions since the last increase on 1st January 2014. The interest income earned this financial year increased slightly from $295K to $331K. With the drop in the cash balance from $45 million to HK$33 million and the conversion of RMB deposit to Hong Kong dollar, it is expected that there will be less interest income in the coming year.

Depreciation charges increased by $400,000 from $3.1 million to $3.5 million, this is mostly attributable to the completion of two major renovation projects including the Coffee Shop and Office / Staff Area. We will amortize the cost of these two projects over the unexpired period of the present lease.

Overview

Income

• Subscriptionsincreasedby5.5%ascomparedwithlastfinancialyearmainlyduetotheincrease in monthly subscription effective from 1st January 2014.

• Despite theclosureof theCoffeeShop for some50days toundergo refurbishmentwork, the food and beverage sales exceeded last year by $1,628,085. We were able to improve gross profit percentage from 63% to 65%, this was partly due to an increase of 9% in food selling price that took effect in January 2015 and tight control on cost.

• TheRMBfixeddepositwaswithdrawnduringtheyearandanexchangerategainof$159,098 was realised. Total interest income earned since inception of this RMB fixed deposit account was $108,642. Breakdown of interest income is shown below:

Expenditure

• Atotalpayrollcostof$39millionwhichaccountsfor67.5%ofourexpenditure,wasincurred during this financial year. There was no material change to the average number of permanent headcount but the costs increased by $3.3 million. By taking reference to the overall consumer price indices as released by the Census and Statistics Department, staff members were given an average of cost of living salary adjustment of 4.5% in April. Other major reasons for the increased salary costs include the higher replacement cost of staff turnover and additional provision on Long Service Payment and Staff Annual Leave Entitlement.

• Inorder to remainapremier sports club, additionalmoniesneeded tobe spentonjunior development programmes for various sports, including cricket, hockey and football. Therefore total sporting sections expenses increased by 48.8%.

• WiththesupportoftheGeneralCommittee,westartedtosetasideasumof$1.2millionevery year specifically for the repair and maintenance plan on normal wear and tear of the club house premises and facilities. This year we have earmarked $1.2 million for the Swimming Pool Pavilion repair work and as requested by the auditors, the accounting treatment of $344K was booked in this financial year, with a balance of $867K to be charged in the next financial year.

• ThisfinancialyeartheClubincurredatotalof$701,414onprofessionalfeeswhichwas$155,989 higher than last year. A breakdown of professional fees is shown below:

A total payment of $414,820 was made to Urbis Limited for preparation of master layout plan and a Town Planning Board Section 16 submission and this is shown under Notes 5 to the financial statements ‘Construction in progress’.

1 General information

The principal activities of the Kowloon Cricket Club (“the Club”) are to provide sporting, recreational and clubhouse facilities for the members.

The Club was incorporated under the Hong Kong Companies Ordinance and is limited by guarantee. The address of its registered office is 10 Cox’s Road, Kowloon, Hong Kong.

The land of the Club is held in Hong Kong by a grant of private treaty from the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region which expires in December 2026.

Under the provisions of the Club’s Articles of Association, every member shall, in the event of the Club being wound up, contribute to the assets of the Club to the extent of HK$50. At 31st July 2015, the Club had 1,964 members and 295 subscribers (2014: 1,963 members and 253 subscribers).

The financial statements are presented in the Hong Kong dollars unless otherwise stated. These financial statements have been approved for issue by the General Committee on 13th October 2015.

2 Summary of significant accounting policies

The principal accounting policies adopted in the preparation of these financial statements are set out below. These policies have been consistently applied to all the years presented, unless otherwise stated.

2.1 Basis of preparation

The financial statements of the Club have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with Hong Kong Financial Reporting Standards (“HKFRS”) issued by the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (“HKICPA”).

The preparation of financial statements in conformity with HKFRS requires the use of certain critical accounting estimates. It also requires management to exercise its judgement in the process of applying the Club’s accounting policies. The areas involving a higher degree of judgement or complexity, or areas where assumptions and estimates are significant to the financial statements, are disclosed in note 4.

(a) New standards, amendments and interpretations to existing HKFRS effective as of 1st August 2014

The HKICPA has issued a number of new standards, amendments and interpretations to existing HKFRS which are mandatory for the Club’s accounting periods commencing on or after 1st August 2014. These new standards, amendments and interpretations do not have any impact on the Club’s financial statements since they are not relevant to the Club’s operation.

The Club will apply these Amendments in the year of initial application. The Club is currently assessing the impact of the adoption of the Amendments and is not yet in a position to state whether they would have a significant impact on the Club’s results of operations and financial position.

(c) New Hong Kong Companies Ordinance (Cap. 622) The requirements of Part 9 “Accounts and Audit” of the new Hong Kong Companies

Ordinance (Cap. 622) come into operation during the financial year, as a result, there are changes to presentation and disclosures of certain information in the financial statements.

(d) Prior year adjustments In prior years, subscriptions income and car park labels income were recognised in full

when the billings were issued. During the year, management consider that it is more appropriate to recognise income in a financial year with a cut off at the balance sheet date. Prior year adjustments were therefore made in the financial statements as in the opinion of the General Committee, this would give a fairer presentation on the results and state of affairs of the Club for the years concerned. 2.2 Foreign currency translation

(a) Functional and presentation currency Items included in the financial statements of the Club are measured using the currency

of the primary economic environment in which the Club operates (“the functional currency”). The financial statements are presented in Hong Kong dollars, which is the Club’s functional and presentation currency.

(b) Transactions and balances Foreign currency transactions are translated into the functional currency using the

exchange rates prevailing at the dates of the transactions. Foreign exchange gains and losses resulting from the settlement of such transactions and from the translation at year-end exchange rates of monetary assets and liabilities denominated in foreign currencies are recognised in the statement of comprehensive income.

2.3 Property, plant and equipment

Property, plant and equipment are stated at historical cost less depreciation and impairment losses. Historical cost includes expenditure that is directly attributable to the acquisition of the items.

Subsequent costs are included in the asset’s carrying amount or recognised as a separate asset, as appropriate, only when it is probable that future economic benefits associated with the item will flow to the Club and the cost of the item can be measured reliably. The carrying amount of the replaced part is derecognised. All other repairs and maintenance are expensed in the statement of comprehensive income during the financial period in which they are incurred.

Construction in progress mainly represents tangible assets under construction and is stated at cost. Construction in progress is not depreciated until such time as the relevant assets are

completed and available for use. Upon the completion of the project, the costs will be reclassified to the respective categories in property, plant and equipment, and depreciated in accordance with the policies as stated below.

Depreciation on property, plant and equipment is calculated using the straight-line method to allocate their costs to their residual values over their estimated useful lives as follows:

* For those assets acquired before 31st July 2011, depreciation is recognised over the unexpired period of the previous land lease. For those assets acquired after the conclusion of the present land lease agreement, they are depreciated over the unexpired period of the present lease, that is up to 25th December 2026.

The assets’ residual values and useful lives are reviewed, and adjusted if appropriate, at end of each reporting period.

An asset’s carrying amount is written down immediately to its recoverable amount if the asset’s carrying amount is greater than its estimated recoverable amount (note 2.5).

Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing the proceeds with the carrying amount and are recognised in the statement of comprehensive income.

2.4 Intangible assets

Intangible assets represent the membership debentures in a sports and country club with indefinite useful lives and are stated at cost less any provision for impairment losses.

2.5 Impairment of non-financial assets

Assets that have an indefinite useful life are not subject to amortisaton and are tested annually for impairment. Assets are reviewed for impairment whenever events or changes in circumstances indicate that the carrying amount may not be recoverable. An impairment loss is recognised for the amount by which the asset’s carrying amount exceeds its recoverable amount. The recoverable amount is the higher of an asset’s fair value less costs to sell and value in use. For the purposes of assessing impairment, assets are grouped at the lowest levels for which there are separately identifiable cash flows (cash-generating units). Non-financial assets other than goodwill that suffered an impairment are reviewed for possible reversal of the impairment at each reporting date.

2.6 Inventories

Inventories comprise food and beverages and sundry items held for resale and are stated at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Cost is calculated on the first-in first-out basis. Net realisable value is determined on the basis of anticipated sales proceeds less estimated selling expenses.

2.7 Members’ accounts and other receivables

Members’ accounts and other receivables are recognised initially at fair value and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method, less provision for impairment. A provision for impairment of members’ accounts and other receivables is established when there is objective evidence that the Club will not be able to collect all amounts due according to the original terms of receivables. The amount of the provision is the difference between the asset’s carrying amount and the present value of estimated future cash flows, discounted at the original effective interest rate. The amount of the provision is recognised in the statement of comprehensive income.

Members’ accounts are amounts due from members for goods sold or services performed in the ordinary course of business. If collection of receivables is expected in one year or less (or in the normal operating cycle of the business if longer), they are classified as current assets. If not, they are presented as non-current assets.

2.8 Offsetting financial instruments

Financial assets and liabilities are offset and the net amount reported in the balance sheet when there is a legally enforceable right to offset the recognised amounts and there is an intention to settle on a net basis or realise the asset and settle the liability simultaneously. The legally enforceable right must not be contingent future events and must be enforceable in the normal course of business and in the event of default, insolvency or bankruptcy of the Club or the counterparty.

2.9 Impairment of financial assets carried at amortised cost

The Club assesses at the end of each reporting period whether there is objective evidence that a financial asset or group of financial assets is impaired. A financial asset or a group of financial assets is impaired and impairment losses are incurred only if there is objective evidence of impairment as a result of one or more events that occurred after the initial recognition of the asset (a “loss event”) and that loss event (or events) has an impact on the estimated future cash flows of the financial asset or group of financial assets that can be reliably estimated.

Evidence of impairment may include indications that the debtors or a group of debtors is experiencing significant financial difficulty, default of delinquency in interest or principal payments, the probability that they will enter bankruptcy or other financial reorganisation, and where observable data indicates that there is a measurable decrease in the estimated future cash flows, such as changes in arrears or economic conditions that correlate with defaults.





The amount of the loss is measured as the difference between the asset’s carrying amount and the present value of estimated future cash flows (excluding future credit losses that have not been incurred) discounted at the financial asset’s original effective interest rate. The carrying amount of the asset is reduced and the amount of the loss is recognised in the statement of comprehensive income.

If, in a subsequent period, the amount of the impairment loss decreases and the decrease can be related objectively to an event occurring after the impairment was recognised (such as an improvement in the debtor’s credit rating), the reversal of the previously recognised impairment loss is recognised in the statement of comprehensive income.

2.10 Cash and cash equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents include cash in hand, deposits held at call with banks and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts, if any.

2.11 Payables

Payables are recognised initially at fair value and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.

Payables are classified as current liabilities if payment is due within one year or less (or in the normal operating cycle of the business if longer). If not, they are presented as non-current liabilities.

2.12 Employee benefits

(a) Employee leave and long service payments entitlements

Employee entitlements to annual leave and long service payments are recognised when they accrue to employees. A provision is made for the estimated liability for annual leave as a result of services rendered by employees up to the balance sheet date.

Employee entitlements to sick leave and maternity leave are not recognised until the time of leave.

(b) Pension obligations

The Club operates a defined contribution scheme in Hong Kong, the assets of which are held in separate trustee-administered funds. The scheme is funded by payments from the Club. The Club’s contributions to the scheme are expensed as incurred and are reduced by contributions forfeited by those employees who leave the scheme prior to vesting fully in the contributions.




2.9 Impairment of financial assets carried at amortised cost (Continued)


The Club has also established a mandatory provident fund scheme (“MPF scheme”) in Hong Kong. The assets of the MPF scheme are held in separate trustee-administered funds. The Club’s contributions to the MPF scheme are expensed as incurred. The Club has no further payment obligations once the contributions have been paid.

(c) Long service payments

The Club’s employees have to complete a required number of years of service to the Club in order to be eligible for long service payments under the Hong Kong Employment Ordinance in the event of the termination of their employment. The Club is liable to make such payments in the event that such termination of employment meets the circumstances specified in the Hong Kong Employment Ordinance.

2.13 Provisions

Provisions are recognised when the Club has a present legal or constructive obligation where, as a result of past events, it is probable that an outflow of resources will be required to settle the obligation, and the amount has been reliably estimated. Provisions are not recognised for future operating losses.

Where there are a number of similar obligations, the likelihood that an outflow will be required in settlement is determined by considering the class of obligations as a whole. A provision is recognised even if the likelihood of an outflow with respect to any one item included in the same class of obligations may be small.

2.14 Contingent liabilities

A contingent liability is a possible obligation that arises from past events and whose existent will only be confirmed by the occurrence or non-occurrence of one or more uncertain future events not wholly within the control of the company. It can also be a present obligation arising from past events that is not recognised because it is not probable that outflow of economic resources will be required or the amount of obligation cannot be measured reliably.

A contingent liability is not recognised but is disclosed in the notes to the financial statements. When a change in the probability of an outflow occurs so that outflow is probable, they will then be recognised as a provision.

2.15 Revenue recognition

(a) Subscriptions, car park label income and library club income are recognised on an accruals basis.

(b) Entrance fees are recognised upon admission of members to the Club. (c) Income from sales of food and beverage, and race box are recognised when services are

rendered.

(d) Income from the shop sales and commission income from consignment sales are recognised when the Club has delivered products to the member, the member has accepted the products and collectibility of the related receivables is reasonably assured.

(e) Interest income is recognised on a time-proportion basis using effective interest method. (f ) Court and ground fees, tenpin bowling fees, guest parking fees and locker rentals are

recognised when services are rendered. (g) Guest visiting fees, commission income and transfer fees are recognised when the rights

to receive payments are established.

2.16 Operating leases (as the lessee)

Leases in which a significant portion of the risks and rewards of ownership are retained by the lessor are classified as operating leases. Payments made under operating leases (net of any incentives received from the lessor) are expensed in the statement of comprehensive income on a straight-line basis over the period of the lease.

3 Financial risk and capital risk management

3.1 Financial risk factors

The Club’s activities expose it to a variety of financial risks: foreign exchange risk, credit risk, liquidity risk and cash flow interest rate risk. The Club’s overall risk management programme focuses on the unpredictability of financial markets and seeks to minimise potential adverse effects on the Club’s financial performance.

(a) Foreign exchange risk

Foreign exchange risk arises when future commercial transactions, and recognised assets and liabilities are denominated in a currency that is not the Club’s functional currency. The Club is exposed to foreign exchange risk primarily with respect to Renminbi.

As at 31st July 2015, if Hong Kong dollars had weakened/strengthened by 5% against Renminbi with all other variables held constant, surplus for the year would have been HK$341 (2014: HK$254,325) higher/lower, mainly as a result of foreign exchange gains/(losses) on translation of assets denominated in Renminbi.

The Club does not enter into any derivative financial instruments to minimise its foreign exchange risk exposure.

(b) Credit risk

Credit risk arises primarily from members’ accounts and cash and cash equivalents.

As the Club’s members’ accounts consist of a large number of members, the relevant concentration of credit risk is low. In addition, in order to minimise the credit risk

resulting from counterparty default, the management of the Club has delegated a team responsible for monitoring procedures to ensure that follow-up action is taken to recover overdue debts. The Club also reviews the recoverable amount of each individual member account at each balance sheet date to ensure that adequate impairment losses are made for irrecoverable amounts. In this regard, the General Committee members are of the opinion that the relevant credit risk has been significantly reduced.

The Club has exposure to concentration risk as its short-term deposits and cash at banks are deposited in two banks, however, as they are internationally reputable banks, the General Committee members of the Club are of the opinion that the related credit risk is low.

The maximum exposure to credit risk is represented by the carrying amount of each financial asset in the balance sheet.

(c) Liquidity risk

Prudent liquidity risk management implies maintaining sufficient cash and bank balances. The Club’s liquidity risk is further mitigated through the availability of financing from adequate amount of subscription income and entrance fee income so as to enable the Club to meet its liabilities as and when they fall due and to continue operating for the foreseeable future. In the opinion of the General Committee members, the Club does not have any significant liquidity risk.

(d) Cash flow interest rate risk

Apart from the bank balances which carry interest at market rates, the Club has no other significant interest-bearing assets and liabilities. The interest income derived therefrom is relatively insignificant to the Club’s operations; therefore, its income and operating cash flows are substantially independent of changes in market interest rates. The General Committee members are of the opinion that the Club does not have significant cash flow interest rate risk and no sensitivity analysis is performed.

3.2 Capital risk management

The Club’s objectives when managing funds are to safeguard the Club’s ability to continue as a going concern and to have sufficient funding to support its daily operation. The Club’s overall strategy remains unchanged from prior years.

The funds of the Club represent general fund.

In order to maintain or adjust funds, the Club may adjust entrance fee income and subscription income.

3.3 Fair value estimation

The carrying value less impairment provision of receivables and payables are a reasonable approximation of their fair values due to their short term maturities.

3.4 Offsetting financial assets and financial liabilities

No disclosure of the offsetting of financial assets and financial liabilities is made in the financial statements as there are no netting arrangements in place during the period.

4 Critical accounting estimates and judgements

The Club makes estimates and assumptions concerning the future. The resulting accounting estimates will, by definition seldom equal the related actual results. The estimates and assumptions that have risks of causing a material adjustment to the carrying amounts of assets and liabilities within the next financial year are discussed below.

Useful lives of property, plant and equipment

Management determines the estimated useful lives and related depreciation charges for the Club’s property, plant and equipment. Management will revise the depreciation charges where useful lives are different to previously estimated, or will write-off or write-down technically obsolete or non-strategic assets that have been abandoned or sold.

The Club is exempted from Hong Kong profits tax under Section 24(1) of the Inland Revenue Ordinance.

Cricket

This report is organized around four central themes that hopefully illustrate the season gone by and more importantly, highlight where the section is positioned for the future.

Juniors & Home-grown talentA big push was made this year to give our young and home-grown players every opportunity to play competitive cricket. Some were given Captain and Vice-Captain roles and the chance to play Sunday and Premier cricket. There was an ever more important role given to our Senior Cricketers to help mentor and guide our youngsters as they learned the ropes. I am especially thankful to our Head Coach Ryan who was not afraid to give youth and our home-grown talent a chance this season and for persisting even when results may not have been going our way. It is hoped that by continuing with this approach, not only will it create a sustainable future for the Club, it might also lead to our future Premier League team being largely made up of talent groomed at the KCC and going on to

win the Title. The signs are promising with our U19 Elite Team winning the season-ending T20 competition and several of our players being selected to represent the Hong Kong National Team.

Our junior programme went from strength to strength this season. Under the leadership of Ryan, Assistant Coach Usman and several other coaches, we have built strong and competitive outfits at all junior age levels. The success of the programme forms the bedrock of our coaching system. This year, it has attracted several new boys and girls to join, many of whom should help to form the nucleus of KCC cricket in the future.

MaidensOur pool of ladies cricketers increased this year as we welcomed some exciting new talent. It was great to see the comradeship and positive spirit of the Maidens. Their dedication to training and improvement resulted in the team improving upon previous seasons to finish second in both the T20 and one-day competitions. Usman has been terrific in providing additional coaching sessions for the Ladies. The opportunity to play competitive matches on the KCC Main Ground this season is also something which must continue; ideally the HKCA can allocate more of the premier grounds in Hong Kong to Ladies’ games.

A big effort should be made next season to attract more Ladies to learn to play the game at the KCC. A special thank you to Allyson Ko for taking on the role of Ladies Representative; much of her efforts go unseen and she deserves immense credit for carrying out her duties humbly and effectively. CommunityWe are privileged to have the KCC ground for our use. But it is also our duty to make it available for others in Hong Kong. This season we coached several school-children from an Operation Breakthrough programme, Sir Ellis Kadoorie School, Methodist College, Quarry Bay School and Australian International School. Apart from juniors, national team players from the HKCA used our ground on a regular basis and we hosted tournaments such as our Corporate Sixes, the T20 Morning League organized by Afzaal Haider and other sixes tournaments. Plans are also in place this summer for a Caritas “tape ball” day for the Hong Kong community, and a programme to host Young Dragons’ coaching sessions as part of the HKCA’s efforts to expand the game across the city.


I hope we continue to do more than expected to provide opportunities for the rest of the community to learn the game of cricket. The more people playing the game, the better it will be for KCC and Hong Kong.

MembersWe are ultimately a “Members” Club. This means different things to different people. For me it represents the belief that as a section, we should enjoy ourselves both on and off the field and together, we should seek to provide opportunities for all of us to become more involved in the KCC. Social events, committee work, going on tours, mixing after the games, improving one’s game through regular training, playing matches and many other activities all represent important benefits and responsibilities for Members.

There is certainly a lot more that can be done to enhance the experience for all of us. But in truth, we already are very lucky to be Members of such a great Club. The KCC Management team, led by Greg Hartigan, his Assistant Managers and right down to all the individual staff, make it a pleasure to walk into the KCC everyday. The KCC Ground has been the envy of all of Hong Kong cricket as well as earning praise from our overseas guests such as Royal Logistic Corps and Singapore Cricket Club, thanks to the terrific work of Roger Jones, Jason Chan and the rest of the Groundstaff. We are also incredibly fortunate to have Ryan as our Head Coach, Usman as Assistant Coach and all the other supporting coaches who enable us week-after-week to learn and play the game. The General Committee of the Club, led by its President, Rob Gill, are steadfast in their support to make the KCC the best Members club for Cricket in Asia. Much of the success this season has also been down to the hard work and selfless dedication given by Allyson, Ravi, Simon, Stephen, Erle, Kunal and Chris through their work on the Committee – I express my personal thanks.

Last but not least, to all the cricket section Members who have given their time to training, coaching, captaining, playing and organizing events – it’s been a great innings for me this past year and it is to all of you I owe a debt of gratitude.

Hockey

Captain of Hockey’s ReportSince our last AGM, the Hockey Section Sub-Committee (HSSC) continued on without a break from the previous season to inject energy, time and encouragement into our Section.

Our team of HSSC ‘Comrades’ met once a month officially to exchange ideas and share information, always with clear objectives, to explore options on how to better achieve targets and how to increase efficiency. Informal meetings were held at least once weekly to keep things moving, whilst emails, phone-calls and whatsapp messages were exchanged daily in order to keep up with the hectic demands and challenges of the HS activities. There were times when tasks seemed never-ending and on some occasions simply exhausting.

However with the Comrades’ team strength, stamina and determination we battled on and pulled each other through. Thankfully, in return for all our effort, we have received overwhelming support by almost everyone

involved in the HS… At the end of the day it has all been extremely rewarding.

This is my second year as Convenor to write this report. With support of the sub-committee members, the section continues to remain transparent and to provide a harmonious and social environment for all lawn bowls players. In addition, we receive positive feedbacks

from our section members in respect of the following:

Triples League 2014We had four men’s teams and two ladies’ teams to participate in Triples League. Remarkable results in Triples League are as follows:

End of Triples League Dinner was held on 5th April 2014 with 50 participants turned up. Westartedtoenjoyfoodanddrinksfrom7:30pm,thensanganddancedfrom9:30pmuntil midnight.

Premier League 2015At the time of preparing this report, we have finished all games in first half season. Men’s Ateamisin4thpositionandis8pointsbehindthefirstteam.Men’sBteamis7thposition.Men’s C team is in 10th position and Men’s D team is in the lower end at the league table. Ladies’ A team and B team are in the middle position in the leagues tables. Good bowling toallbowlersandkeepenjoybowling!

KCC Sportsperson of the Year 2014Jimmy Chiu was nominated as KCC Sportsperson of the Year 2014 and he received his trophy from Azeem Ebrahim (Chairman of Sporting Convenors Subcommittee) during the Club AGM on 5th December 2014.

International Competitions1. Our experienced bowler, Jimmy Chiu, represented Hong Kong to participate in the

2014 Incheon Asian Para Games in October and achieved the following outstanding results.

– Gold Medal in Men’s Singles and – Silver Medal in Mixed Pairs2. Jimmy Chiu and Y W Li represented Hong Kong to participate the International Bowls

for the Disabled World Championship 2015 in February. – Jimmy won Gold Medal in Mixed Pairs and Silver Medal in Men’s Singles.3. Timmy Kwong represented Hong Kong in the 2015 Chinese National Lawn Bowls

Championship in March 2015 and won the Men’s Pairs Champion with his partner. He also represented Hong Kong to participate in Brunei International Open Mixed Triples Championships and with Ken Chan in Australian Open.

We had five mixed rinks and only one rink won. It was an excellent opportunity to meet our good old friends in Thailand and we were overwhelmed by their hospitality. It was such a wonderful and enjoyable trip that every participant would never forget.

International Kinabalu Cup 2015 – 26th to 29th May 2015Therewereover64teamsfromMalaysia,Australia(2teams),Philippines(4teams),China,Brunei (4 teams), Singapore (1 team) and Hong Kong (8 teams). It was played in a mixed triples format and KCC had 8 teams to join. The winner was Malaysian Youth team, runner-up Brunei, the Philippines the third and Sabah A the fourth.


The Tanglin Club Singapore – 150th Anniversary Lawn Bowls Tournament 23rd/26th July 2015Therewereover40teamsfromMalaysia(3teams),Australia(12teams),Japan(1team),Thailand (2 teams), Singapore (12 team) and Hong Kong (10 teams). It was played in a mixedtriplesformatandKCChad3teamstojoin.ThewinnerwasMalaysianYouthteam,runner-up Brunei, the Philippines the third and Sabah A the fourth.

The club arranged Welcome Dinner on the first day and Presentation Dinner on the last day at Churchill Room. Out of our expectation, the Club prepared a birthday cake to celebrateRonnie’s97thbirthday.

We all enjoyed the games throughout four days and their hospitality. My sincere thanks to allKCCtourteammatesandsupporters!

Grand Prix Competition 3rd to 6th April 2015It was a new competition organized by HKLBA where only the top four teams in Division One in 2014 premier league were invited. The participating teams were KCC, KBGC, HKFC, POC, HK and HK Youth Team. We look forward to playing for the next year.

110th Anniversary Police Club on 12th July 2015The friendly match was played on the new green in PRSC at Mongkok. Our team consisted of Peter Hevicon, Annie Yeung, Patrick Fong and James Keung. We enjoyed the games very much and were invited to attend the drinks/presentation dinner after the match.

3. AnnualDinneron25thOctober2014 – Our Annual Dinner was held on Saturday 25th October 2014 at KCC Sports Hall.

Elizabeth was the organizing director and Anna was the director of performance. – Over 80 players, spouses and guests (including KCC President and his wife) joined

this joyful event. The theme was Mamma Mia. We had fancy dress and karaoke contests. Everyone enjoyed two talent shows very much.

4. Friendly Match with Singapore Tanglin Club on 22nd November 2014 – It was a glorious afternoon, sunny and cool as we kicked off our first friendly game

withvisitorsfromSingapore.Therewerefiverinksopentriples.KCCwon3rinks,drew one and lost one. Everyone enjoyed the mix and mingle drinks afterwards. In July 2015, we visited Singapore to celebrate the Tanglin Club’s 150th Anniversary tournament.

5. HollisTrophywithPOCon26thDecember2014 – The match was held at Police Officers’ Club, Causeway Bay. We had 24 players. The

friendly match went well and all players enjoyed a wonderful afternoon. We shall get back the trophy at KCC next year.

6. KCC101thChildren’sSportsDayon1stJanuary2015 – On the first day of 2015, KCC Children’s Sports Day was held on the cricket field.

Lawn Bowls Section ran a small booth to let KCC members and their guests to try lawn bowls. This year, we did not raise funds and the prizes were mainly for kids. Players (adults and children) enjoyed bowling very much and a few of them were keen players.

7. NewYearFunDayon1stJanuary2015 – Wehad42playersdividedinto7rinksofmixedtriples.Thewinningteamsreceived

a bottle of wine each as prize. The game completed with a ‘spider’. The day ended with everybody sharing the wine won by the winning teams.

8. Fat Choy Cup on 21st February 2015 – The weather was warm and beautiful. – We had overwhelming responses from players with 48 players signed up on the

day. We started the game with the arrival of Lion Dance and “God of Wealth”. Every player received a red packet and enjoyed the game.

9. SC Trophy with Hong Kong Football Club on 28th March 2015 – It was the first friendly match with Hong Kong Football Club. We agreed to host the

game alternately and two participants donated a new trophy names as ‘SC Trophy’ (‘S’ represents Sports Road and ‘C’ represents Cox’s Road). Although the 24 KCC players fought very hard for the trophy at HKFC indoor green, we lost the game at the end. Let’s win it next year at KCC.

10. Tai Mo Shack Trophy on 5th April 2015 – 15 bowlers participated the one day competition – Both final games were played very well and were very exciting. The finalists

performed at very high standard and attracted many spectators.

11. Pig Cutting Ceremony on 18th April 2015 – It is our Section’s tradition to have Pig Cutting Ceremony on the commencement

date of the Premier League Games. We were delighted to invite our Club President, Rob,tosharethisjoyfulevent.Around70playersshowedup.Men’sDteamstartedtheir first game and had victory 8:0. Well done.

12. Friendly Match with Hong Kong Cricket Club on 19th April 2015 – Wehad36playersandinvitedHKCC36playerstoplayin9mixedfourrinks. – It was the return game in response to HKCC hosting us last Jun. – KCC ran out comfortable winners overall.

13. RamseyTrophyon1stJuly2015 – Due to inclement weather on 11th April, the match was re-scheduled to 1st July at

KCC. – In the past, only 24 players participated at the game but this year this was increased

to36players. – Wedivided72bowlersinto9mixedrinks,with18ends. – Finally, KCC won 8 rinks and lost 1 rinks. Well done.

Jimmy Chiu – The Chief Executive Commendation for Community Service AwardMr. Jimmy Chiu has been awarded the Chief Executive Commendation for Community Service Award. This was published in HKSAR Gazette on 1st July 2015 in recognition of his long, outstanding contribution to the Lawn Bowls sport.

On behalf of the Lawn Bowls Section, we congratulate him once again for his achievement and wish him all the best in his future sport career.

GreensBoth Greens maintained good grass coverage throughout the winter period. This is a combination of reasons including improved maintenance programs, effective scheduling of play direction, use of dump mats and favourable growing conditions over the winter period. Before start of the premier league, new rink-end drinks boxes, new wind breaker and shelving were installed in the bar seating area.

Thanks our greens convenor, Peter, who conveyed our opinion and concern to the club management and the green maintenance team.

Section MembersOur sectionhasover100activeplayers.Wecurrentlyhave7SSmembers, including2newly joined players. All of them are experienced and valuable players to the section. Also,wehave3JSmembersincluding1newlyjoinedthisyear.Thankstothecaptainsforarranging JSs to play in the league games so that they may gain more experience in lawn bowling.

Annual DinnerThe Annual Dinner will be held on Saturday, 24th October 2015 at KCC Sports Hall. Sanie is theorganizingdirector.Hopefully,thiswillbeanotherwonderfulevening.Let’shavefun!

Fair and transparency – Protect our rights

My Dear fellow Members of the Tennis Section,

Ladies and Gentlemen.

The term of the Tennis season 2014-2015 will end soon and I hope a new Convenor and the Sub-Committee members will be elected on 26 November 2015.

I wish to thank you all for the support and understanding during the season 2014-2015 for the Section and special thanks to members of the Sub-Committee and task forces for their valuable contributions, advices and guidance.

The convenor and sub-committee members are here to ensure members’ right to use the courts and to assist the KCC General Committee and the General Manager and his Sports Director and staff of the Administration Office to run the section smoothly in accordance with KCC Byelaws.

The KCC Wimbledon 2015 was held successfully and other planned friendly tournaments and Inter-Club friendly matches during the season. Due to inclement weather our friendly Inter-Clubs Tournament 2015 have been cancelled.

The Sub-Committee members worked hard and diligently to produce a Manual and Guidelines for The KCC Tennis Sub-Committee in order the incoming Sub-Committee members to have a better understanding with the KCC Bye-laws and the section requirements and guidelines to deal with during the section meetings and procedures for our section.

The KCC Coach have co-operated with the Management and agree to move some of coaching and trainings to other non-peak hours in order that members may have more chances to enjoy their social matches. We need to maintain this friendly and harmonic atmosphere within our section in the Club. The tennis section will always encourage and support more Tennis Grassroots and Youth development in order to create our own youth tennis players to play and represent KCC.

Tennis Section will continue and support to have members and juniors to represent various league competitions and leagues organized by the HK Tennis Association and Inter-Clubs activities.

However, I would like to address again our request to KCC General Committee to include and increase at least two or more courts for Tennis in their Master plan for improvement for the Club for KCC members to enjoy playing their tennis.

May I take this opportunity to thank all team captains and team players for their


participation in the HKTA league matches and other tournaments and for their efforts, dedications and contributions to play for KCC.

ThisyearTheSectionAnnualdinnerwillbeheldon6thNovember2015andtheAnnualGeneral Meeting will be held on 12th November 2015.

This event is also to recognize for outstanding members of Tennis section during the year for their achievements and contributions to the Tennis Section.

We have no divisions in Tennis Section as we are all part of KCC members working for the good of KCC Tennis.

Last, I wish to thank once again to all Tennis SC members, The Sport Director (Maverick Leung) for his knowledge, guidance and co-operation and for his operational staff for their hard work.

Squash

The Squash Section continues to enjoy success on the court in both theWinter andSummer leagues and in various Interport matches. In the Winter League our Ladies team continue to dominate the first division topping the table for the fourth time in a row and

other teams performing extremely well (full report below). This year we also entered two teams into the Summer League with both teams only losing one rubber on the way to winning in both divisions.

In 2014, Evan Fowler, who has been convenor for two years, decided to step down mostly due to work commitments. I have therefore stepped in as Convenor, but I have a big task emulating the performance of Evan and Aaron Yip before him. On behalf of the whole section I congratulate Evan on a job well done and thank him for keeping the section in such good order.

Our number 1 players, Leo Au and sister Annie Au continue to improve and perform extremely well on the international stage. As of writing this article, Leo has a worldrankingof26,whileAnnieisrankedevenhigherat10.Iamsureyouhaveallseenthe articles in the WOK relating to these successes.

During the year we have had visiting teams from Korea, Indonesia and Guangzhou. At KCC we will continue to promote and encourage overseas teams to visit Hong Kong which gives our players more international exposure.

ThisyearKCChostedtheInauguralContrexCupSquashChampionship.ThiswasruninJuly and was a truly successful event. Players of a very high standard came from all parts of Asia and Australia to complete in this event. Both players and organisers gave very favourable opinions on the condition of our courts, showing that the investment in our squashfacilitieshavebeenworthwhileandappreciated.

Winter League ReportOur Ladies 1 team played in Division L1 this season and were awarded both the Division Champions (top of the division table at the end of the season) and the Finals Series Champions.

Our Main League KCC 5 team played in division 5 and were awarded the Division Champions.

Our Main League KCC 8 team played in division 13B and were awarded the DivisionChampions.

Inaddition to this,our teams inDivision1,2,3,6and8 teamsare runnersup in theirrespectivedivisions,withKCC2,KCC3,KCC5,KCC7andKCC8beingrunnersupintheFinals Series.

Summer League This year we entered two teams into the summer league, one team in Division 1 and one team in Division 4. Division 4 was divided into two divisions, so our team was entered into Division 4A.


Our division 1 team topped the league table losing only one rubber for the season and were awarded Champions of Division 1. Our Division 4A team also topped the league table and also only lost one rubber for the season and were awarded Champions of Division 4A.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognise the contribution given by each of the team conveners. Being the team convener is a thankless task, but one which is extremely important to the success of the team and, by extension, the section as a whole. They spent a lot of their personal time chasing players, ensuring the preparations for each match, etc. Thank you all very much for your efforts during the Winter Season.

I would like to thank all of our players who participated in the Winter League during 2014 and 2015. The matches were played in a fantastic competitive spirit. I am very proud of the manner in which our players conducted themselves whether they won or lost. It can be said that every player was a great ambassador for KCC whether playing at home or away.

Lastly I would like to thank all the supporters who turned up to the matches and often helped with marking etc. It makes a big difference playing to an audience, no matter how big or small.

The KCC Football Section continued to experience strong growth during the 2014/15 season and has in place a complete coaching program that facilitates the training and development of players across all age groups from Juniors through to Colts and Adults.

The range of accredited coaching programs from Juniors, Colts and Adults continues to enable the KCC Football Section to develop players as they compete through the ranks of the Hong Kong Junior Football League, the Hong Kong Football Association’s Henderson League, the Yau Yee League, the Royale Asia Legal League and the Hong Kong Football Association League.

The Football Section is the biggest sporting section at KCC, with 500 players representing the club across its junior, colts and adults programs. The Football Section has an excellent working relationship with Asia Pacific Soccer Schools (APSS). APSS continue to provide expertise with the coaching and management of the Football Section’s junior and

youthdevelopmentprogramsandtheircoachingtechniquesarewidelyaccreditedtotheincreasedperformancesandfitnesslevelsacrossallagegroupsintheFootballSection.

There are more than 350 children in our junior football program, competing in theHong Kong Junior Football League across many different age groups in league and cup competition formats. The KCC hosts a number of junior football tournaments for the HKJFL throughout the season, attracting thousands of children and their families to the club. Our Girls section continues to prosper and we have had a number of players being capped by Hong Kong at the ‘elite’ youth level in the Asian Football Conference Championships for their age levels.

Season 2014/2015 was another successful season for our Colts teams who represented the clubwith distinction in theHKFA’s Henderson League. For season 2015/2016 KCCwill have representative teams in the HKFA Henderson League at every age-group from U13throughtoU18.Wewillagainbecompetinginthe3rdDivisionoftheHKFASeniorLeagueforseason2015/2016andwehaveanumberofnewyoungplayerswhoarekeento demonstrate that KCC can compete successfully at this level.

In the Yau Yee League First Division, the KCC Dragons had another stellar season finishing runners-up in the league; the KCC Knights enjoyed a solid season in the YYL Second Division and will be looking to push on and challenge for promotion to the top division this coming season. In the Royale A Hong Kong Legal League, the KCC Royals enjoyed another successful season finishing in 5th place in the Second Division.

During May’s televised Citibank HKFC International Soccer Sevens, KCC Vets fielded ex-professionalsJamesGradyandAlanMcManusandcompetedverywellinahighqualitytournament.Afterprogressingwellthroughthegroupstage,KCCqualifiedfortheMastersPlate Final against Hong Kong Football Club. During a memorable final, goals from Marcel Sossnowski, James Grady and Ian Nelson enabled the KCC Veterans to win the Masters Plate Final and bring silverware back to Cox’s Road for the first time since 2009.

There’s been plenty of other action throughout the year: the highly successful and inaugural Graham Archer Memorial Sevens; Interport matches against RBSC; our season opening poolside party; and a section Rock n Bowl night to name but a few.

It has been another successful year for all KCC societies with the establishment of the Table Tennis Society being a highlight for me. As you will see from the individual reports below, all societies are thriving and many are setting up excellent links with other clubs

as well as taking tentative steps into playing regular league games. Long may it continue.

Golf Society Richard Tinlin

This year has seen the spirit of adventure continue in the Golf Society (GS) as we have travelled further afield and visited two new Golf courses in Huizhou for our monthly Stableford League events, the brand new Bo Hing Course and the well appointed Birds Resort Course. This takes some doing as we have visited a huge number of courses over the past 15years.Anotherwelcomeadditiontoourvenuesisareturnafter7yearsto the excellent Xili Club.

Outstanding results have been mainly from our younger golfers with Leon D’Souza carding a71atourGSChamps.Hewas2ndintheEFGBankOrderofMeritin2014andiscurrentlyin1stplaceintheHKGAOrderofMeritinthe15-17agegroup.Hehadanoutstandingwinin the International Junior Championships in Malaysia in November 2014 and returned to lead the HKGA team to victory in the Junior Team Champs and then won the HKGA Winter Junior Champs. He staged a great recovery to win the HKGA Junior Closed Champs and after a successful American tour returned to win the Faldo Series Hong Kong Champs and the Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Junior Open. As a result of these successes he has been invited for a week-long trip to the WGC Champs at Shanghai Sheshan to play in the Pro-Am with the World’s top golfers and be involved with the World Class Event. Congratulations Leonandverywelldone!

InaraSharmaiscurrentlyin5thplaceofthe13-14yeargroupEFGBankHKGAJuniorAgeGroupstandings.ShewonourGSchampswithascoreof77andwonourAugusteventwith76. In our nine Stableford League events to date we have had 8 different players winning the Men’s Stableford Championship trophy and with two events to go there promises to be a very tight race to the finish with six players in contention.

The GS sub-committee has endeavoured to reach out to new areas and provide good value golf in a convivial social gathering for our members and the positive feedback we have received indicates that we are doing a good job thus far.

The Golf Simulator is available for all members and is a good way to practice all aspects of your game, it can be booked through reception.

Bridge Shabbir Barma

The Bridge Society presently has 28 members and holds duplicate bridge events regularly on Tuesdays in the Aerobics Room. This popular event is open to members and walk-in guestsstartingat7pmandfinishingaround10:30pm.Theatmospherewhilstcompetitiveisalsoquiterelaxed.TheDirectorsareourpresentBridgeConvenor,RajuRamchandani,and stalwart A Team Captain Dr. David Mok. Our special thanks to both our Directors for their voluntary contribution and time given to the game.


Despite the small membership, we have 2 teams entered in the Interclub Bridge League. TheATeamconsistsof7 topflightplayersandarepresently2nd in the leaguewith2games left to play. The A Team has also progressed to the semi-finals of the KO tournament which is also run by the Interclub League.

The B Team comprises of 10 keen players and are currently in 10th position, but with another 5 games to play, hopes to finish somewhere in the middle of the league.

TheBTeamhadprogressed3roundsintheKOtournamentandjustlostoutforaplaceinthe semi-finals.

Snooker Navin Ahuja

This year, we participated in the Inter-Club Snooker League and there is a high probability forusinreachingfirstorsecondplaceaswehavewon4outof6gamesplayed.

Our Internal Tournaments had been a success as details were published in advance in the snookerroomaswellassenttoallmembersviaemail.Arecordnumberof87entrieshadbeen recorded.

We produced over 50 Snooker Polo shirts, most of which were distributed during the snooker AGM for all of the KCC snooker players.

We refurbished our snooker tables. The cloth of the tables was replaced with the “Hainsworth Precision” cloth which was originally designed for professional players. We also installed under-table heaters for keeping the cloth and rails dry.

I ampleasedtoreportthatKCC’snewestSocietyisnowwellandtrulyestablishedwithamembershipcurrentlyinexcessofsixty.Ofthesesomethirtymembers rotatethrough ourpractice sessions which has placed additional demands on our coach. We are now offering 5to6hoursofcoachingperweekand it isencouragingtoseeseveralofouryoungerplayers signing on for the ten minutes allocated to everyone on a first-come, first-served basis. We have recently started an Attendance Record to establish the level of interest amongst our keener members and a ladder will be run to rank our top players.

Credit must be given to the General Committee for their support and for accelerating our elevation to Society status in what must be record time. This has without doubt given legitimacy to our existence and helped promote the sport within KCC.

We do have some talented youngsters and it has been our intention from the start to include them in any of the friendlies we have from time to time. Our recent match against Craigengower Cricket Club saw four of our young members participate. They did exceptionally well and won nearly every one of their matches, more than could be said for the rest of the team with a couple of exceptions, although, the results were a lot closer this time. It should be pointed out that each one of these youngsters benefits from active coaching apart from that provided by KCC. We are hoping to see more Members’ children join us particularly on the Saturday mix-in which is proving to be popular.

Coaching is the key and it is obvious many of us still have to un-learn the way we taught ourselves to play if we are to take KCC into a wider arena of competitive play. This is our ultimate goal, but at the same time, those who wish to play for the pure fun of it will alwaysbewelcome.


Wenowhaveatotaloffourqualitytableswhichisourmaximumgiventheconstraintswith storage. This also limits expanding our membership to some extent although I understand Maverick is looking into the possibility of providing additional table tennis space in the Aerobics Room for Club members as a whole. This would certainly be a most welcome expansion if approved.

Long term, and if the Club considers it to be a worthwhile provision in any new development of the Club’s facilities, we would hope to see a permanent space allocated to Table Tennis. We certainly believe the demand is there.

Badminton Herbert Kwok

The 2014/15 season has proved to be another fruitful year for the KCC Badminton. Although the number of Society members did not increase as dramatically as in the last two years, we have over 85 fees paying Society members. With the help by the sub-committee, the number of morning players have grown significantly and became the backbone of the Society. While the Thursday evening activities were more focused on the youthtraining aswellastheteamtrainingfortheClub.

This year the KCC badminton Team have participated in both the official Badminton AssociationMixed League and thenewly formed Inter-Club League. With some clevertacticalmanoeuvres fromourCoachLiew, ourteamhaswonALLthehome&awaygamesagainst the LRC, HIT and HKFC. KCC is the official champion of this new born Inter-Club League 2015.

Carlton & Dunlop sponsored our annual Tin & Bottle Tournament this year. With the turnout of over thirty members, we have divided the players into two groups. Ken Wong & Satish Alwani, regulars of our KCC team have won the Championship in Group A. While Paul Cannon & Neeja Sujnani became the winner in our Group B. All four of them have received some top-end rackets from Carlton.

In fact, there has been plenty of other action throughout the year; friendly visit & demonstration matches by Olympians Nicole Grether & Charmaine Reid from Canada; former world no. 1 doubles player Lee Wan Wah and his Junior team.

Undoubtedly, the KCC Badminton Society, has all the elements to become one of the best badmintonclub/societyinHongKong.Withaproper&moreadequatepolicyinjuniorsportssubscribers,KCCbadmintoncangoalongway!

Wine Society Danny Gohel

The KCC Wine Society (KCCWS) has begun a successful year after the AGM in January 2015. A new committee was elected with Danny Gohel (Chairman), Ray Brewster (Secretary), Dave Parkin (Treasurer) and as committee members Michael Shum, Prem Kumar and newly elected James Gagnon.

The first half of the year has been eventful with the annual Macau trip in February and the 2nd overseas trip to Cape Town wine lands in South Africa in early April 2015.

TheKCCWShasaccumulatedastockoftop-qualitywinespurchasedpreviouslywhicharenow coming to age and maturity that will be drinking best now. Hence, Society members will be getting their “dividends” back in terms of drinking. This year will see some of these wines such as the Mondavi vertical, Barbaresco, Sauternes, Burgundy whites, Feytit-Clinet vertical, Musar vertical and the Dead Arm vertical. These vertical tastings could not be


possible without the prudence and timely purchases of the wines so that the members can enjoy them at their peak. Such events are popular with the members such that they are often sold-out and only a limited number of guests can be accommodated.

A new event started by the committee this year is a monthly “Cellar Tastings” on the second Thursdaysofeachmonthtohavememberstastefewwines(normallyeightbottles!).Thepurpose of these tastings which are free to the members is to allow them to taste the wines that are on the KCC Wine society list as well as single bottles that are in the cellar and few that are left over from the tastings, allowing those that missed the tastings to try them. The event has been successful and it happens on the music night at The Pavilion which is co-incidental. Turns out to be a lively evening with wine, cheese and music.

We have a joint event with the Hong Kong Wine Society, the Christmas party in December. This is a hugely successful joint venture with members of the two societies sharing the food and wines.

The work of the wine society cannot be accomplished without the support and collective wisdom of the committee members and I thank the committee members for the support and advice.

The wine society is a society to enjoy wines with friends. We drink all types of wines and one needs to venture into some wines that we have never tried. There are surprises as well asdisappointments,butintheenditiswellwortheverydrop.Wewelcomeanyinquiriesto join which is easy, and with a modest monthly fee and a one-time entrance fee gives you access to a collection of wines that is enviable.

Food & Beverage

For theyear2014/15,KCCF&Boperation recordedanet lossof$333Kwhichwasveryencouragingwhencomparedwiththebudgetedlossof$1,441Kandanetlossof$2,214Kfor the last fiscal year. This result also met the GC’s policy for the Club’s F&B operation to

“breakeven – no significant profit or loss”.

It has not been easy to pursue this policy given the continuing upward trend on the cost of food and other ingredients as well as the very competitive labour market. The moderate average increase of 9% in food price from January 2015 and the slight rise in overall food sales have helped to achieve this comparatively favourable financial result. The Management has also strived to maintain an effective and efficient F&B operation through the establishment of the post of Procurement Manager and the introduction of various measures and staff training workshops to improveoverall F&B servicequality and toensuregoodvalue for money.

TheclosureoftheCoffeeShopfor50daysforrenovationinthefourthquarterof2015has created no adverse impact on the overall F&B sales. It was reopened under the new name of The Boundary Café, and has continued to be the most popular dining venue in the Club. Together with the Pavilion and the Grill Room, these three main catering outlets have continued to offer Members choices of different dining atmosphere and experience, including ample opportunities to sample a good variety of special themed menus and food promotions.

Despite an increase in patronage in the Main Bar, the sales of beverage across the board has continued to register a downward trend over the past few years. Mindful of the impact of theDrink-Drivingregulationsonalcoholicbeveragesalesandinordertopromotequalitywine and dine experience to Members, the Management has been working together with the Wine Society to arrange wine tastings and special wine dinners.

The F&B Sub-Committee will continue to work closely with the Management with a view toimprovingthequalityandstandardoftheClub’sF&BservicefortheenjoymentofallMembers.

I would like to express my appreciation to all members of the F&B Sub-Committee for their time and contribution.

Entertainment

The all new Entertainment Committee was established at the beginning of the year (2015) with the Management and new Committee Members enthusiastically accepting the brief toprovidetheKCCMembershipwithmoreentertainmentevents,qualityevents,events

to attract all KCC members particularly for families and children.

We have had a busy year so far which gets busier towards the years end. We have experimented with some events which realised some disappointments but most events have been successful particularly two events where we have employed professional production companies.

For regular music lovers the weekly live music provided in the Pavilion continues to be very popular with some excellent bands and entertainers.

For adult entertainment we have held a number of events notably the Bobby Brown Motown Dinner, the Dinner-Theatre “Murder at the Oscars”

both well attended. Yet to come we have the Oktoberfest Kick Off Party followed by the Oktoberfest Closing Party in the Beer Garden (Sun Lawn), Bonfire Day Pool BBQ and the New Years Eve Dinner Party which promises to be something different.

Family events: Other than the regular Family Campouts and Pool Party’s held throughout the year we had another successful New Year Children’s Sports day, a Yakult Factory visit, Easter Entertainment, a Summer Family Fun Day and Evening Pool Party in August (which was very successful despite being the hottest day of the year, an outing to Kadoorie Farm, a Magic Workshop and in December we have the Christmas Carolling, Tree Lighting and something very new, a Children’s Christmas Drama (Pantomime).

We hope KCC Members have had an enjoyable and entertaining year at the Club. The EntertainmentCommitteehopetobuildonthisyearsexperiencesforanevenbetter2016and encourage the Membership to present new ideas or what sort of entertainment they would like to see and be happy to take part in.

In conclusion a big thank you must be given to the Entertainment Committee Members for the time and effort in presenting their ideas and getting things up and running and attending many enjoyable committee meetings, at least one every month for the past year. The Committee Members are Albert Li, Beryl Chambers, Don McNeil, Declan de Silva and at the beginning of the year Johno Johnson, chaired by myself, Dave Parkin. But the real hard work has been carried out by the KCC Management, under the leadership of General Manager Greg Hartigan and particularly Program & Events Manager Venice Tang and F&B Manager Terry Mung who make things happen and the KCC Staff who present everything so well for the Members enjoyment.

Development Planning

In January 2015 the Development and Planning Subcommittee (DPSC), and the Tender Subcommittee were reconvened with a good membership mix, and their first meeting held at end January. DPSC held two further meetings in April and July.

ProjexAsia Limited was engaged to serve between July 2014 and June 2015 as General Club Consultant, to assist in the renovation works, including the tendering and site supervision of the various projects.

• StaffAreaandManagementOfficeproject. The General Office/Staff Areas Renovation project commenced in Jan 2015. Phase I,

the 1/F Management office, was completed in early 2015, which started off the office moving exercise. Renovation of the Staff Area, including the toilet, changing room and canteen were then completed in May 2015. We were glad to see staff enjoying the new canteenwithmoreseatingandbetterequippedchangingfacilities.

• ConcreterepairinSwimmingPoolPavilion Concrete spalling or fallen plaster was reported at the ceiling of the Swimming pool

pavilion (the Kiosk) in February. Upon dismantling the false ceiling in March, further spalling concrete was revealed on the ceiling concrete face. For safety purposes, a registered structural engineer was engaged to inspect and advise on the repair. Drawings for concrete repair were prepared. With this our Project Manager Projexasia Limited conducted tendering. Contractor commenced the repair work in August, and targeted to complete by Oct. 2015.

• Lamppolesonclubpremises TheClubhasacquirednewequipmentforthetestingoflamppolesforsafetypurposes,

many of which were over 20 years of age. All lamp poles (48 in number) on club premises were tested, saving the cost of engaging a testing consultant for the job.

Progress of Projects under planning• ProposedNewBuildingDevelopment(Extension) Urbis Limited, a planning consultant was commissioned to draw up a proposal for the

extension of the Club building for additional floor areas for sports and car park space. In July 2015 Urbis made a planning application to the Town Planning Board (TPB) for the “Proposed Minor Relaxation of Site Coverage Restriction (from 15% to 24%) for PermittedPlaceofRecreation,SportsorCultureUse”forKCC,underSection16oftheTown Planning Ordinance. On publishing KCC’s planning application, TPB received about 144 “comments on the planning application” at the end of the exhibition period in August.While12weresupportive,mostofthecomments(132)wereadversecomments


objecting to KCC’s development, most of them originated from the neighbour and a DC member. Consultant Urbis has been working with Planning Department to address the concerns/ comments expressed by various Government departments over the potential impacts on traffic, noise, air, environment, visual and landscape etc. The Metro Planning Committee of the Town Planning Board was scheduled to meet around November 2015 to consider KCC’s proposal with the “Response to Comments” supplemented by Urbis at end Sep 2015.

• MainBarRenovation To organise the loose “bundle” of telephone and communication wires/cables which

were housed at the back of the Main Bar, a utility company was sought to offer a solution to organise the wires into a full height cabinet so that all existing (and future) wires/cables would be put in cable ducts, organised and concealed, and protected for the purpose of safety, security, tidiness and aesthetics. The Club management would purchase new furniture to give the Main Bar a new look.

Discipline Sub-Committee

During the current financial year a Disciplinary Panel had to be convened on one occasion, in order to consider the conduct of two members in the Club’s Reading Room in the early hours of the morning. Following the Panel’s consideration of the matter and having

considered the written representations put forward by each member, the General Committee decided, in accordance with the Club’s Articles, to endorse the Panel’s recommendation that each member be suspended from using the Club’s facilities for a period of eighteen months, the conduct in question being considered injurious to the character orinterest of the Club, particularly having regard to the fact that guests of the Club were present in the Reading Room at the time.

As previously noted in last year’s Annual Report, the behaviour of the vast majority of the Club’s members gives no cause for concern. However, during the course of the year a number of complaints were received regarding the conduct of a small minority of members. At the time of

writing, two of these complaints are still the subject of on-going disciplinary proceedings. In other instances, in some cases following complaints from members, warning letters have been issued regarding, amongst other things, the use of mobile telephones within the Club, car parking infringements, apparent gambling for money in the Bar and the consumption of food on Club premises which had been brought in from outside, all of which involved contravention of the Club’s Bye-Laws.

As always, my thanks go to the management team for their assistance, to members of the General Committee and this Sub-Committee for their support and in particular, to those Sub-Committee members who gladly gave their valuable time to sit on the Disciplinary Panel,ataskwhichIcanassuremembersisquiteonerousandnotparticularlypleasant.

The Club remains limited to 2000 members by its Articles. This does not include Honorary Members,Subscribers,orAbsentMembers.Asat31July2015,theClubhad1948Members,311HonoraryMembersandSubscribers,and437AbsentMembers.Abreakdownofthe

categories can be found in the table. The major increase is in the category of Junior Subscribers. This is due to the restricted number of Sporting Subscribers available, the necessity of maintaining/increasing the sportingsectionplayingstrengthsaswellasmeetourleaserequirementsof having a cheaper route for youth to play sport.

Membership remains a time consuming task and my sincere thanks go to Burji Shroff, K.S. Tang, Maurice Yap, Ashok Sakhrani, Cliff Imeson, and Brian Chambers for their contribution towards interviewing applicants as well as attendance at the Membership Sub-committee monthly meetings. Intotal,19interviewpanelswereheldinvolving139applicantsforthevarious categories of membership. Monthly meetings covered a variety

of issues from recommending Partner Cards, changes of Corporate Nominees, reviews of statistics, and on occasions, complex issues relating to individual membership or categories of memberships. Meetings are often lively and productive. The main objective of the Sub-committee is to try and ensure consistency in decision-making which is fair to all members.
