He does not have the courage nor the conviction to be the Mayor of Kouga. In response to the closed gate that kept residents from entering the grounds of the municipality, Hjul said: “We will get a court order in due course and we will once again come back and assemble peacefully on the grounds of the municipality. “This action portrays the real culture of the municipality which fails to recognise that the municipality belongs to the people that live in the Kouga.” According to Koerat, they will go through each memorandum received and respond within 14 days. “To date, residents owes the municipali- ty between R100 000 and R120 000 million in rates and taxes. RESIDENTS are advised totread carefully of an e-mailwhich claims the sender canhelp property owners savethousands of rands on rates andtaxes.

The e-mail was circulated toan unknown number of localproperty owners last week.

Kouga Municipal ManagerSidney Fadi said the municipa-lity was concerned that thee-mail was a hoax aimed at ta-king advantage of propertyowners who might not realisethat it was too late for them toobject to the 2009 valuations oftheir properties.

“There was a formal objec-tion and appeal period in 2009and 2010. During this time pro-perty owners were invited to in-spect the general valuation roll

and to object to the valuation oftheir properties if they believedit to be incorrect.

This process was completedtwoyears ago and thenecessaryadjustments were made to thevaluationsof thosewhoseobjec-tions or appeals were success-ful,” the Municipal Managersaid.

He said the next objection pe-riod was scheduled for 2014when the new general valua-tion roll would be finalised.

“The objection period is go-verned by law and the personbehind these e-mails does nothave the legal authority to re-open the process either bela-tedly orprematurely.Weadviseproperty owners to keep this inmind should they choose to re-spond to the e-mail,” he said.

Flodder is ’n mengsel vanbitumen, vergruisersand, sement enwater.

Awarded for her incredible ability to adaptand effectively thrive in a previously unfami-liar industry, Ferreira’s business has grownfrom a few hundred plants in 1998 to a multi-million rand farming enterprise today.

The business was started on a small scalewhen Ferreira initially began farming onland that she leased from her husband. To-day, the business produces spinach, leeksand strawberries ona 40ha farm in theGam-toos Valley and supplies the distributioncentres of three of South Africa’s leadingchain store groups, namely Spar, Pick ’nPay and Shoprite / Checkers / Freshmark.

Ferreira currently employs 90 employ-ees at Mooihoek Boerdery.

The farm also currently delivers straw-berries to chain stores andmarkets inDur-ban, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Dur-ban, Pietermaritzburg andPort Elizabeth.

Ferreira says that Mooihoek Boerderystarted as a little girl’s dream of one daymarrying a farmer and later evolved intoa dream of empowering the workingwomen on the farm. She says that build-ing and maintaining relationships is oneof the most important elements of herbusiness asher suppliers, employees andclients are the lifeblood of the business.

She attributes her faith and determi-nation to continually better her busi-ness brought her into contact with roleplayers that enhanced, empowered andprovided her with the necessary knowl-edge she needed in the fields of produc-tion methods, irrigation and good busi-ness practices.

According to Kobus Engelbrecht, a mem-ber of the 2012 Sanlam / Business PartnersEntrepreneur of the Year judging panel, Fer-reira stood out amongst her competition be-cause of the number of jobs she created in arural area where unemployment is rife. “Not

Ons beleef soveel oomblikke waarons net so dankbaar is.

A LEAKING roof can really take the joyout of cuddling up inside on a cold, driz-zly day. Similarly, mould due to mois-

ture is just plain unsightly. The good news isthat such problems are entirely avoidable ifyou invest in a goodprotective system thatwillkeep the elements at bay. We asked Greg Or-pen, Store Manager at City Paint & Tool inPort Elizabeth, for a few tips on the best wayto waterproof your house.

Waterproofing seems to be the order of theday in households around the Eastern Capewith all the rain and floods in the region in re-cent times.

Many people seem to have forgotten aboutthe importance of good waterproofing onbuildings when we were caught in the grip ofthe worst drought in decades. When the rainsfinally arrived and continued to arrive, mostof us soon realised that water would soon finda way through any small imperfections in the

buildings where welive or work.

Now is the timeto seal and protectsurfaces to preventfurther damagefrom driving rainand flash floods.

The most impor-tant tip with anypaint or paint-relatedjob is to ensure thesurface is clean andfree of all contami-nants which couldundermine the adhe-

sion of the coating. Polycell sugar soap can beused to clean everyday grime and grease fromwalls. PlasconAquasolv degreaser is a solventbased cleaner for heavy dutywashing of facto-ry or garage floors. Surfaces that have beencompromised by rising damp, such as flakingand powdering of paint must be scraped downand be allowed to dry before treatment.

Remember to treat the cause of the problemfirst, to prevent the same problem from re-oc-curring. Find out where the damp is comingfrom. Fill and coat those areas so the wateris repelled from the positive side.

Flashings on roofs must constantly bechecked and replaced with Plascon Roofsealand membrane when they perish. PlasconMultiseal is an excellent waterproofing com-pound for weather walls and parapets. Thiscan be over-coatedwith PlasconWall &All forlong lasting protection.

Plascon Brickseal is a silicone-based waterrepellent for face bricks, which canbe sprayedusing a regulation garden sprayer.

Plascon Dampseal is used in areas whererising damp or water penetration has brokendown existing coats, and extra waterproofbonding is required.

A lot of people experience excessive mouldbuild-up on ceilings andwalls in lowventilationareas of the house e.g. bathrooms, cellars etc.Plascon “Kitchens&Bathrooms” is awonderfulnew product which combats fungal growth onthese substrates. It is water-based and easy toclean, appearing in a convenient 2.5Lt pack.

Now, it wouldn’t be so bad if they wouldjust warn us that they are yet again workingon the pipes, something they do a lot.

Letters/ BrieweThey don’t, and we poor idiots who do our

washing during the day end up with a nastysurprise at the end of a cycle.

This means we have to wait, and guess, when the water will be clean enough to washwith. It also means we have to pay for thewasted water, electricity and washing pow-der.What really ticksme off is that the peopleat the municipality are indifferent, in otherwords, they don’t care at all. I can not be theonly one complaining, can I?
