Jeannette du Doit, Fountains Mall algeme-ne bestuurder, sê:“Die voorval is by sekuriteit aangemeld en

THE gloves are off and the major battle isyet to come - the 2016 local municipal elec-tions.

Voting to decide who will be at the headof the Kouga Municipality, is scheduled totake place on August 3.

With the Democratic Alliance (DA) thatled the National African Congress (ANC)49.87% to 44.22 during the provincial elec-tions in 2014, the battle is set to be fierce thisyear in a bid to triumph as the leading partyin the region.

ANC Sarah Baartman regional secretaryScaraNjadayi is confident that theANCwillonce again rule over Kouga.“After the 2014 national elections we did

some in depth internal reflection to seewhere we can improve and how we can re-cruit more supporters,” says Njadayi.“It was found that 700 residents from

Ward 12 did not vote for the ANC due toproblems with service delivery. Delayedhousing projects prevented some 1 008 resi-dents from KwaNomzamo in Humansdorpto cast their vote, while a further 2 000 resi-dents did not support the ANC due to a lackof electricity, water and sewerage infra-structure.

“All of these problems have been ad-dressed, and we have residents’ commit-ment to once again vote for the ANC in theupcoming election.”

Njadayi continues that residents can ex-pect a lot of changes and development in theKouga, “when we win the election”. These

include proper roads, bigger reservoirs, ad-ditional waste sites, constant refuse remov-al, improved service delivery and landmadeavailable to investors.

On the opposite side of the coin, the DAis just as confident that theywill be the lead-ing party come August.

According to DA Member of Parliament(MP) and leader of theDA inKouga,ElzavanLingen, the DA believes that they can winKouga owing to voters yearning for changeand quality service delivery.

“Voters are calling for a well-run munici-pality with good and clean governance - amunicipality where services are regularlyand properly delivered to each and everyward,” says Van Lingen.

“Wewill have a caringmunicipality offer-ing increased opportunities, and a safe and

inclusive municipality for all residents. Be-ing forward thinking in Kouga is key to en-sure a free, fair and opportunity rich socie-ty.”

According to Van Lingen, attracting in-vestments is only possible in a well-run andclean municipality. “It is the DA’s priorityto create that environment for investmentto create the much-needed jobs for the peo-ple in Kouga.

“There will be a vast improvement in ba-sic service delivery and stock will be takenof housing lists, housing projects, the highnumber of municipal vehicles out of order, the increasing debtors and creditors, aswellas a full audit of all Expanded Public WorksProgramme projects,” she says.

“Regular and fruitful communicationwillfurthermore be restored.”

HE became a hero overnight after rescuing adistressed cow that was trapped in a septictank for several hours - all while her little calfwas desperately calling for his mother.

Anurgent plea for someone to assist theHu-mansdorp SPCA to rescue the cow from thedeep hole in Kruisfontein on April 4, spreadlike wildfire. Within minutes the post wasshared by 47 Facebook-users and read by al-most 6 000 people - all trying to find help.Completely unaware of this commotion,

SPCA Inspector Benjamin Sithole (41) gath-ered the help of the community within min-utes and after digging a trench and graduallypiling in sandandgrass into thehole, the tiredcow finallymanaged to walk out - much to therelief of the community and her calf. The whole operation took over an hour. For Sithole, who joined the Humansdorp

SPCA this year, it is a no-brainer to go beyondand above the call of duty to protect the de-fenceless animals in Kouga.Even when the going gets tough, Sithole re-

fuses to throw in the towel. His dream is to educate young people about

caring for animals. According to him, teach-ing this generation about animal care ismore

Just the otherweekwe had to put a cow downthat was stabbed in the chest and had a bro-ken bone. It was just lying on an open pieceof land - struggling to breathe as its one lungwas punctured.“Then there are a lot of dogs in the informal

settlements that are tied up with heavy andshort chains cutting into their flesh. Thesechains are so heavy that the dogs can hardlymove. Some are even locked with a huge lock, apparently to prevent people from stealing thespecific dog.” Sithole says all thedogs they res-cue and are able to save, are put up for adop-tion. “These animals are like children. Theytoo need to be taken care of and be loved.”For more information, or to report animal

cruelty or animals indi-stress, contact Sit-hole at 083 607 6814.

immediately effective than rehabilitating old-er minds about the importance of taking careof animals.“While it is important to reform old habits

through speaking, teaching and motivatingolder people, there is no greater satisfactionthan teaching youngpeople, as they representthe future and are receptive to new informa-tion -more thanold peoplewhoare set in theirways,” says Sithole. On these educational outreaches, they also

dip and vaccinate the animals.According to Sithole, who first joined the

SPCA 14 years ago as a kennel cleaner andwas promoted to inspector after six years, working at the SPCA is a calling. He grew upin a rural area with cows and seven dogs, andnow has a cat and two dogs of his own. “Youmust have a love and passion for animals. Itis not a high-paying job and you oftenwitnessimmense cruelty, but knowing you are help-ing to make a difference is extremely reward-ing. When you go to bed and night, it givesyou peace of mind,” says Sithole. His vision is to educate and change people’s

attitudes towards animals by teaching theyoung how wrong it is to be cruel to thosewithout a voice.“With this type of job, you are confronted

with horrible things almost on a daily basis.

MONIQUE BASSON

Enige skenking is uiters welkom.

Vir meer inligtingof skenkings, kontak Christelle by 079 094 2374.

Ek

THE Rotary Recycle Swap Shop Project atGod’s Acre in TarragonaRoad, SeaVista, wasre-opened last week after being suspended atthe end of 2015 until such time as a committedvolunteer group could be found to take overthe monthly running of the project.

The lack of proper security at the precinct hadalso become a problem with the shop being bro-ken into several times. “We owe a very big voteof thanks to local security experts Calibre Secu-rity who have now installed an alarm system inour shop at no cost whatsoever to the project,”says Rotarian project leader Lyn Aitken.“Weare thrilled to announce that thevolun-

teer baton has nowbeen taken up by a dynam-ic youth group from Sea Vista who call them-selves REV-Up along with some hardworkingladies from the Sea Vista ladies walkinggroup and the girls from SONrise.”The kick-off for the new team was last

Thursday, April 6. The ew team worked side-by-side with some of the “old” team to learnthe ropes and get acquaintedwith the system.TheRotary Satellite Club St Franciswill part-ner with the new volunteer group to providementorship and guidance as well as assist-ance with fundraising and stocking.“The idea of the Recycle Swap Shop pro-

gramme is that primary school children fromdisadvantaged communities have the oppor-tunity to collect and sort recyclable materialfor which they can earn points,” says Aitken.“These points can then be exchanged forgoods in the Swap Shop.”The Swap Shop stocks basic non-perishable

food, hygiene products and school stationery,
