I was relaxing, having a coffeeon Saturday afternoon in a coffeeshop near Insadong in Seoul, when I noticed the number ofcameras that people had. Ofcourse, photography is very pop-ular these days and there aremore cameras around than therehave ever been before, but forsome reason it really hit me howmany people had DSLRs.
There seemed to be at leastone at every table — no exagger-ation. I decided to try and unob-trusively check the dial on thetop the cameras to see what set-tings people were using. I wassurprised.
The reason I was surprisedwhen I noted the settings of themany cameras I saw was thatthe vast majority of them were
set to one of the several auto-matic modes of shooting thatare available. I thought that ifso many people are using theirDSLRs in this way, they couldhave saved a bit of money andbought nice little point andshoot cameras.
Any camera that allows youto control as many aspects of animage in the way an SLR cam-era — film or digital — does is avery powerful creative tool. However, access to this creativi-ty can only be unlocked if youget out of Automatic mode.
Operating a camera in one ofthe various Auto modes can beconvenient, but the differencebetween a DSLR set to Auto anda point and shoot is not verymuch. The huge advantage aDSLR has over a point andshoot though, is the creativity itallows you through the variousdegrees of manual setting.
You can create beautifullyblurred backgrounds in portraitsin Aperture Priority mode, orcapture a dynamic action shotwith the use of motion blur usingShutter Priority, or producestunningly lit night images withthe longer exposures available inpurely manual mode.
The ability of a point-and-
shoot camera to capture pho-tographs of this nature is quitelimited, so don’t limit your cre-ativity behind your DSLR byleaving that dial stuck on Auto.
In the next couple of columns,we’ll look in more detail at thevarious manual modes on acamera and the creativity youcan take advantage of.
I just want to hark back tosomething I said earlier. I men-tioned that access to greatercreativity could be enabled byusing a camera’s Manual mode,I didn’t suggest the ability totake better pictures would beunlocked. The route to betterpictures is through the photog-rapher, not the camera.
There is a difference betweenbeing creative and being better. This is why good photographerscan usually produce good photosno matter what gear they areusing. One of the benefits of theSeoul Photo Club on Flickr isthat members help develop eachother’s photography by postingconstructive feedback, opinionsand getting constant exposureto great photos from other mem-bers.
So, don’t be automatic and getout there.

Although we have comethrough the first quarter of 2009already, it’s never too soon — ortoo late — to think about nextyear’s tax returns.
This article will explain twosimple ways to accumulate de-ductions — and save you hun-dreds of thousands of won —simply by tracking the moneyyou already spend.
The easiest way to earn taxrefunds is by using your creditcard for making major purchas-es. It should be noted that checkcards and normal bank account-bank account transfers do notcount.
To receive benefits from creditcard and cash receipt spending, taxable individuals must spendat least 20 percent of their in-come in this manner. If totalcredit card and cash receiptspending surpasses this 20 per-cent threshold, then taxpayersreceive a 20 percent deductibletax benefit, up to a maximumdeduction of 5 million won.
To receive tax benefits, all youhave to do is print out your cashreceipt report (available online),and any credit card year-endstatements, and submit themwith your tax forms when filingfor refunds.
What is a cash receipt?
While shopping for any num-ber of goods in Korea, you mayhave been asked before if youwould like a cash receipt. Thecash receipt system is not anactual paper receipt, but ratheran electronic method to tracksales tax. Many businesses at-tempt to evade taxes on cashtransactions, so to encouragelegal transactions, the govern-ment initiated a tax incentiveprogram by which consumersare encouraged to help tracksales tax when shopping.
When you ask for a cash re-ceipt, you present either a card,or simply your phone number, and the transaction is reporteddirectly to the tax office.
Registering for the cash re-ceipt system online is surpris-ingly easy, and the wholeprocess can be done in as littleas 10 minutes — assuming youare a registered taxpayer. Thehardest part of the process isthat the website is only avail-able in Korean.
What is a cash receipt report?
To register, go to the NationalTax Service’s website atwww.taxsave.go.kr. Look for alogin prompt on the left sidewith a picture of what looks likea credit card. Beneath this cred-it card are three links, the firstof which is the registration link.Click there, and you will be tak-en to an explanation page thatprompts you to select your formof registration: on the left is themethod for consumers, and onthe right, business owners.Next, click on “I agree,” and youwill be taken to the page whereyou input your personal infor-mation.
The final step is to simplyconfirm your method of enteringeach payment within the sys-tem. The first option is to have acard issued and sent to you.Perhaps the easiest way, howev-er, is to simply use your tele-phone number. Click on your de-sired option, and you are set touse the cash receipt system.
For more information onthese benefits, call the SGC hot-line at 1688-0120 for both taxand consumer consulting.

Take advantage of tax savings
When shopping for something, especially clothes or electronics, youmight be offered a discount. They either explicitly say, “if you pay incash, we’ll give you 20 percent off” or when you take out your card theysay, “if you want to pay with your card, I can’t give you a discount.”What this really means is, “If you pay with a card, this sale gets report-ed to the government, and then I’ll have to pay taxes, and I’m trying tokeep my reported income as low as possible.”
