11 September was a day that we had looked forward to with great anticipation, as it was the day when the new collaboration between the Danish fashion group Day Birger et Mikkelsen and Kopenhagen Fur was launched. No doubt, fur is in fashion like never before. In Europe and North America, this is reflected in increased use of fur trimmings, because, unlike the rest of the world, sales of fur coats remain a little sluggish. The economic situation is partly responsible for this, but the decreasing number of fur shops is also part of the explanation. We are in a vicious cycle where the economic crisis makes it difficult for the traditional fur shops to renew their business concept on a continued basis, which pushes turnover in the wrong direction, resulting in stores closing down. The steadily declining number of fur shops pushes development even further in the wrong direction. Therefore, it is important that as industry we strive to secure new sales channels for our beautiful product. This is the reason why a year ago Kopenhagen Fur signed a formal agreement of collaboration with the organization, Danish Fashion and Textile, and today we are together in Kopenhagen Fur’s new centre KICK, Kopenhagen Internationale Center for Kreativitet On a small scale, we tried to include fur in a normal fashion collection in a small fashion store in northern Copenhagen last season. It was an indisputable success. Now we are trying the same concept only on a large scale. Day Birger et Mikkelsen is Denmark’s third largest fashion group with more than 120 stores in Denmark and abroad. Their brand is represented in more than a thousand stores. In 2013/14, Day Birger et Mikkelsen markets a narrow range of 8 styles of mink, fox and swakara. Because of a new distribution and production

concept the fur coats will be priced in the same manner as ordinary fashion clothing. This means that the fur coat is relatively cheaper compared to other clothing than it traditionally is. When Day Birger et Mikkelsen is selling only 8 styles, it is because the designs of the fur garments must fit carefully into the Day Birger et Mikkelsen concept. In other words, Day Birger and Mikkelsen continues to be a fashion group, using fur in their collection on an equal footing with wool, silk and other materials. Day Birger et Mikkelsen markets the new collaboration under “Day loves Kopenhagen Fur”. It is a manifestation, which we, of course, appreciate, but we appreciate it even more, because Day Birger et Mikkelsen was on a list of anti-fur fashion companies, as reported by Anima, Peta’s Danish sister organization. The fashion industry and the fashion press took very well to the new initiative

and on the first day, more than a quarter of the ordered fur coats was snapped up. It has gone so well that other fashion companies have asked for our help in creating fur collections. Once again, we note that some of these companies are on the same list with Peta as Day Birger et Mikkelsen. As an industry, we have a huge task in getting the fashion industry to adopt fur in their normal collections. I wonder if this task gets easier when showing that fur is good business. That is what we are trying to show with our collaboration with Day Birger et Mikkelsen and we hope that others in the fur and fashion industry will want to do the same experiment. We are convinced that this is the way forward in North America and Europe.

Light rooms and open spaces are the trademark of Scandinavian architecture, and these will also be the characteristics of the future Liaoyang Kopenhagen Fur Studio which was designed by the Danish company Kullegaard Arkitekter.

They have collaborated with Kopenhagen Fur on previous occasions, and their merits have now led to a recommendation from Kopenhagen Fur and, ultimately, to a contract with the authorities of the Chinese multi-million city of Liaoyang.

nordiC arChiteCture for LiaoyangThe authorities of the Chinese town Liaoyang have chosen a Danish architectual firm to design the city’s future fur design centre. Kopenhagen Fur has been the catalyst for the joint venture and will act as a future creative partner for the design centre.

KiCK is a cluster for some of the most important players in the fur and fashion industry: Kopenhagen Studio is responsible for training and product development; Kopenhagen Nexus takes care of the global dissemination of fur and networking; Fur Fab is in charge of lending fur styles to the media etc.; Danish Fashion and Textile plans initiatives and projects for Danish fashion companies. - On the whole, KiCK wants to be the world’s most important and most creative centre for fur and fashion, says Michael Stadi, Head of KiCK/Director of Strategic Alliances. The strategy is clear. It’s about creating a foundation. The Swakara Black Top Lot of the September auction was sold for 1060 DKK per skin to USA Raw Skin Trading Co. Tas Kletsidis for Mr Athanasios Konstantinou from Greece with the specific purpose of promoting his company, Konstantinou Furs.

- I purchased the skins for my customers who wanted these exclusive Swakara Black. It makes me very happy that I purchased this top lot, because it means that I can make the best coats and designs for my customers, Mr Athanasios Konstantinou says.

Mr Athanasios Konstantinou’s company is located in Kastoria, Greece, and he also owns two Greek factories. Visiting the auctions is not new to him.

- I have been coming to the auctions for the last 15 years. Last year was the first time I bought a top lot, and this year I bought one again. I’m not sure where I’m going to dress them yet. But for sure I’m going to choose the best dressing factory, maybe in Italy or Greece, Mr Athanasios Konstantinou says.

swakara BLaCk toP Lot imProves fur BrandThe Silverblue Cross Males Top Lot was bought at 1,140 DKK by

Mr Tim Everest from Polar Furs Ltd. for a Chinese customer. The skins are attractive for customers looking for that little extra something.

It was the British buyer Mr Tim Everest from Polar Furs Ltd. who secured his customer a top lot once again. He said that his customer specifically wanted the Silverblue Cross Males top lot whatever the price. The demand for character and elegancy brought the bidding to 1,140 DKK.

- The tendency in the Chinese market is for everyone to dye their skins black, so when you get a top mutation like the Silverblue Cross male you really stand out in the crowd. When you walk into a shop and see that everything is black, you will be rather stunned by a mutation like this, which has real character. These Danish-Swedish Cross mink where the character is really well-formed look extremely elegant. They are going to attract customers to the shop, says Tim Everest.

The auction dates in February have been rescheduled to give the customers the opportunity to participate in all the auctions of the February round.

Therefore, the inspection of Kopenhagen Fur’s February auction will start on Sunday 2 February and the sale runs from Sunday 9 up to and including Saturday 15 February. The sale concludes on a Saturday, which is quite unusual, but this step was taken out of consideration for the Chinese New Year holidays and the Hong Kong Fur Fair.

Kopenhagen Fur will offer North American black mink from next season. The skins will be sold under a new label, AAA – American Arctic Atlantic, also known as Triple A, which reflects the superlative quality of the skins.

By introducing the new AAA label Kopenhagen Fur proves that the worlds’ largest fur auction house is both diverse and ever-expanding.

The North American black mink is so distinctively different from the European black that Kopenhagen Fur feels it is natural to brand it under its own label. The AAA collection will consist of the finest North American black mink skins, characterized by their short guard hairs and a very dense underwool. For the customers of Kopenhagen Fur, the introduction of AAA will further improve the collection.

- I am very happy buying from Kopenhagen Fur as they offer the biggest quantity of unified quality skins, and also provide the biggest variety of skin types. Now, with AAA skins from North America, I think the collection will be even more attractive and also more convenient for me,” Mr Lu Bicun, a manufacturer from Beijing, says.

Torben Nielsen, Managing Director of Kopenhagen Fur, sees the introduction of AAA as a natural expansion of the mink collection.

Skin dealer Mr Roman Melikhov bought the Swakara White Top Lot at the September auction. It was sold at 1440 DKK per skin. Mr Roman Melikhov owns the Roma-Fur company, and the costly skins were bought with specific customers in mind.

I’m going to use the top lot that I bought today, for some customers in Russia. I have been to auctions many times. It’s the first time I have bought a swakara top lot, but I have bought top lots five times before, Mr Roman Melikhov says.

Mr Roman Melikhov lives in New York and Orlando but he was born and raised in Russia where his company is located.

- My company is located in Moscow, Pyatigorsk and Labinsk, and I have my skins dressed in Italy, Mr Roman Melikhov says.

Mr Konstantinopolskiy Victor from Moscow, Russia, bought the Chinchilla Top Lot at Kopenhagen Fur’s September auction.

The hammer fell to his bid of 760 DKK per skin. The skins are for a well-known, fashionable Russian designer.

The top designer Mr Igor Gulyaev, Fashion House, wants a very high skin quality. We bought the top lot to meet the designer’s requirements, says Mr Konstantinopolskiy Victor.

Mr Konstantinopolskiy Victor has bought top lots before, but it’s his first time buying a top lot at Kopenhagen Fur.

ChinChiLLa for an exCLusive designer

Mr Emile Connor, who owns the company Golden Fur located in Hongkong, and Mr Kristian Nielsen bought the Palomino Velvet Female Top Lot at Kopenhagen Fur’s September auction. The hammer fell to their bid of 1040 DKK per skin. The top lot is a gift for a special customer.

We hope to have a long-standing relationship with this special customer who we are buying the top lot for, Mr Emile Connor says.

Buyer: We had set a limit - We are very satisfied with the price of the top lot. We actually had a limit of almost twice the price so we could buy one more, Mr Kristian Nielsen says laughingly.

It was a very good experience to buy this top lot and we will definitely do it again.

Mr Kristian Nielsen and Mr Emile Connor have attended many auctions at Kopenhagen Fur, but this is the first time they have bought a top lot.

For many years now, Kopenhagen Fur has been working for better conditions for children in the squatter area in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. Mink farmers selling skins at Kopenhagen Fur are given the opportunity to donate skins to Kopenhagen Fur’s charity organization. The skins are sold together with the rest of the

annual offering of 21 million skins. This season, Kopenhagen Fur sold approx. 10,000 donated skins for a total of approx. 1.5 million DKK (250,000 USD). This money is spent on the building of pre-schools that will be provided with running water, toilets and playgrounds and also for food, education and outings for the children in 40 pre-schools.

- I am overwhelmed by the many new opportunities we get with these funds, and I can see the faces of the children in my head already, while I think of what a difference this will make in their lives, says Esme Coetzee, member of S.P.E.S Charity and responsible for Kopenhagen Fur’s charity project in Windhoek.

Like the rest of the Danish fur industry, Kopenhagen Fur’s charity organisation has had a phenomenal year. Almost 1.5 million DKK in fur donations are now being spent on creating better conditions for children in Namibia.

In Greenland, sealskins are a source of national pride. Sealing is decisive for the Greenlanders’ lives and identities and the local population has been seal-hunting for generations. But the Greenlandic seal hunters and their trade association, Great Greenland, face difficult conditions on today’s international fur market. Even though Greenlandic hunters are exempted and certified, and the ban is based on an erroneous perception of how seals are hunted, the EU seal product import ban has made it difficult for the Greenlanders to market their beautiful sealskins. Now, a new partnership agreement between Kopenhagen Fur and Great Greenland aims to change this situation. Through efficient promotion of the Greenlandic sealskins, Kopenhagen Fur will help change attitudes and make sealskins the height of fashion on catwalks all over the world to the benefit of the Greenlandic seal hunters and the Greenlandic society. In future, Greenlandic sealskins will become a fixed element of Kopenhagen Fur’s marketing activities, and will be offered at Kopenhagen Fur’ s five annual auctions. Great Greenland will also deliver skins to Kopenhagen Studio, for the new sealskin trends which will be displayed at fashion shows and fairs globally, one venue being Kopenhagen Fur’s great opening show at Copenhagen Town Hall during the

Copenhagen Fashion Week January 2014. - We’re very pleased that Great Greenland and our owners, the Government of Greenland, now liaise closely with Kopenhagen Fur focusing especially on development. Kopenhagen Fur has asserted itself as a leading player on the general market for mink skins, but also in developing products, design training and many other areas. We’re therefore really looking forward to our new partnership, explans chairman Bruno Olesen and CEO Lars Berg. Through its position as the world’s largest fur auction house, Kopenhagen Fur has previously had success with this type of partnership. As an example, Kopenhagen Fur has for many years worked actively to promote the Namibian lamb skins called Swakara (South West African Karakul skins). The work has paid off, and the Namibian farmers have together with Kopenhagen Fur created a global fashion success, ensuring Namibia export revenue it would not otherwise have earned. The Greenlandic hunter association, KNAPK, welcomes the partnership agreement with great joy and support. - KNAPK is very pleased that Great Greenland and Kopenhagen Fur have entered into a partnership agreement. The new partnership agreement will greatly advance our seal hunters’ conditions as a spin-off from Kopenhagen Fur’s efficient promotion of the Greenlandic sealskins from Great Greenland, says chairman Henrik Sandgreen of the Greenlandic hunter association KNAPK.

aBout great greenLandWith the support from the Greenlandic government, Great Greenland was set up in the mid-70s with the aim of ensuring the Greenlandic hunters more stable incomes. Great Greenland has committed itself to purchase the skins which the hunters are unable to use in their own households, and the company now has more than 45 purchasers along the Greenlandic coast. Since its incorporation, Great Greenland has expanded to become a modern company with 40 staff, a state-of-the-art tannery and advanced dyeing machinery.

- We are often met with the prejudice that we just use the fur and waste the rest. Matter of the fact is that we use all of the mink. Mink carcasses and mink fat are used to produce green energy such as biofuel and fertilizer, and we think this message is so important that we did a campaign this autumn to go against the myth of frivolous use of fur animals, says Tage Pedersen, chairman of Kopenhagen Fur. Mink fat is extremely rich on energy and works excellent for the production of biodiesel. The biodiesel is added to fossil-diesel according to specific EU-norms with the purpose of minimizing

carbon dioxide emissions. The carcass itself is converted into bone meal, which replaces fossil energy used on CPH plants. The ashes are used as filler in cement and asphalt. Finally, some of the bone meal is used as a component in fertilizer sold to the agricultural industries. - We are all dependent on sustainability and the use of renewable resources. In that respect fur has many positive aspects such as a long lifespan, it can be disassembled and reused in new garments and fur is biodegradable. That fact, that we also use the rest of mink is another advantage,

A specific part of the campaign was aimed at young people in a fresh and up-beat tone. Another part was aimed at grown-ups in a fashion setting where a bus and a radiator are suddenly shown on a catwalk among fashionable furs to emphasize that the mink is used 100 %.

Biofuel, heating, fertilizer and fur. Few people are aware of it but all of the mink is used in modern fur production. For most people, mink breeding equals fur. And of course fur is the main product but mink carcasses and mink fat are used for different energy purposes and as fertilizer securing that nothing is wasted.

‘furward trends’ Paves the wayA new partnership between Kopenhagen Fur and ’pej group - scandinavian trend institute’ has resulted in a trend book for fashion and fur people in the Chinese market. The purpose is to educate and inspire the Chinese fur manufacturers.

The competition in the Chinese market is keen, and the Chinese fur manufacturers are challenged in their marketing and corporate branding. Therefore, Kopenhagen Fur and the pej group have decided to develop a trend book, based on their extensive knowledge and experience with trends, fashion and fur. The book is intended to give Chinese fur manufacturers inspiration and practical guidance on how to develop design concepts and collections that both set the trend right and reflects the fashion of the time. The trend book is entitled ’Furward Trends’. - China is a major player in the fur market. The vast majority of all fur garments from raw material to finished goods is processed in China, but in recent years China has also developed a large consumer market. Manufacturers are, however, challenged by the increasing demands from consumers who want fashionable designs and we are pleased to offer them a helping hand in the form of a fur trend book, says Kenneth Loberg, Director of Marketing and Business Development of Kopenhagen Fur. ’Furward Trends’ contains specific

descriptions and visualisation of four themes for the autumn / winter 14/15 season with text, colour combinations, collages, sketch drawings and material samples. The book is tailored for the Chinese market, and all content is written in both English and Chinese. Both parties have contributed to the book with their knowledge and core competencies. This new trend book is easy to use and visual in its guidance of trends, colours and styles for the season. We have done a lot to make sure that the themes are as useful as possible. We know that using trend material for collection development is new to the Chinese and in this context we are very serious about our role, says Louise Byg Kongsholm, Director of the pej group. - The book can be used for three purposes: design, marketing and training. For the first time, the manufacturers actually have a book that keeps them up-to-date with international trends in a timely and cost-effective manner. It’s easy to see the book’s value for design. In addition, the book offers market inspiration for marketing thanks to its

clear expression of themes. Moreover, the book can be a valuable tool for staff training - in particular for the sales staff who need knowledge to work with the consumers, says Chen Weixian, General Manager of Kopenhagen Furward Consulting Co., Ltd. ’Furward Trends’ will be published twice a year, in September and in February, to assist the fur industry in keeping up with international trends. Kopenhagen Fur has decided to use it extensively for all kinds of training - with retailers, manufacturers, and design schools. We expect to share the knowledge fast and wide, in order to benefit the industry. - I have gained a greater knowledge of the fur industry, which has provided further resources in the form of ideas on how to improve business. Furthermore, classmates and afterwards all the members of the MBA alumni club have given me a valuable network. Tsinghua University is renowned, and it impresses people when you mention that you have an MBA degree from this particular university, says Fang Linping.

The distance between the rural parts of North America and the urban environment in Copenhagen is wide, and it can be hard to imagine how the world’s largest fur auction house might look in real life. This challenge was addressed when 35 North American took the trip across the pond and visited Kopenhagen Fur and the Danish fur farmers. - The farmers already know Kopenhagen Fur for our size and quantity but these farmer visits gives us a possibility of establishing a more personal relationship between auction

house and farmer. It can be difficult to imagine just how big Kopenhagen Fur is. You cannot compare us to neither NAFA nor ALC. Our operation is more automated, we collect from a wider selection of markets and we are handling a larger quantity of skins as well. We have a very professional organization with a broad integration of technology. We are very proud of our business, which is why we welcome farmers from all over the globe to come and visit our auction house, says Per Knudsen, chief auctioneer at Kopenhagen Fur.

Chairman of the Canadian Minkbreeders Association, Kirk Rankin, was delighted to come and visit Kopenhagen Fur. - I myself like to meet the people I am doing business with, so getting to experience Kopenhagen Fur at first hand is a big plus to me. I’ve been told that the operation is much automated and so forth, but now I have seen it with my own eyes. So I have to say that these trips are a big plus, and I know for a fact that my colleagues saw this as a big eye-opener, says Kirk Rankin.

The sorting halls and restaurants were visited by North American farmers during the Kopenhagen Fur September auction. A group of 35 North American fur farmers went to Copenhagen to experience the difference between the North American auction houses and Kopenhagen Fur.

The Hong Kong-based broker Tim Everest had a certain agenda during Kopenhagen Fur’s September auction. When he was not in the auction room buying skins for his many customers he was acting as a lobbyist recruiting new members for the IFBA. The IFBA is a mouthpiece for all registered buyers attending fur auctions around the world and the purpose of the association is to discuss all auction related issues with the auction houses. The association will handle discussions with the auction houses on behalf of buyers as agreed at regular meetings. - We want to get as many members of the buying community involved in the IFBA, because this is a body that will look after interests and discussions with the auction houses. The IFBA is a constructive body focused on solutions, whether related to auction dates, assortment, problems with skins after dressing etc. We are also here to

have general discussions focusing on the industry and the major markets around the world, said Tim Everest. To the tall gentleman from Hong Kong it is of critical importance that he involves as many people as possible in the IFBA. - The association brings professionalism and efficiency to the dialogue between buyers and auction houses. We are here to reduce the unnecessary time spent dealing with identical minor problems within the community. By bringing in all the aspects of everyday problems, we can have a positive dialogue. Because these problems are often easily dealt with when handled in bundles, said Tim Everest as he confirmed how the IFBA speaks equally for all members of the trade. - United we stand stronger. Many brokers do not know that the buying community is organized, and do not realize how being a part of this affects their daily work. Tim Everest, Chairman of The International Fur Brokers Association (IFBA), wants to change this and therefore encourages his colleagues to sign up and join the association.

In November, Torben Nielsen, Marketing Director of Kopenhagen Fur, and Kenneth Loberg will be admitted as Honorary President and Vice President of China Fur Association, which is a member of CFNA (China Chamber of Commerce of Foodstuffs and Native Produce). Denmark will have substantially richer opportunities to participate in changes, when, for example, new duties are set in China. - It means much, when we’re suddenly that close to the centre of power. MOFCOM, the Ministry of Commerce, is represented in this association, which means a lot, says Kenneth Loberg. As the only foreigner, Kopenhagen Fur is gaining access to the board. - Kopenhagen Fur is an important player that CFNA chooses not to ignore. The proposals must pass through several community approval boards and therefore it

took a very long time. Now the process will hopefully be faster as the organization has more direct access to the decision-making boards, says Kenneth Loberg. New activities and changes must be approved by MOFCOM, which CFNA will work closely with. MOFCOM will then bring the proposals to China Ministry of Finance, which takes the final decision on whether to make any changes. Special issues are set highest on the organization’s to-do list. - CFNA is particularly focusing on regulatory issues of the whole industry in China. What should duties be, what should trade barriers be – should they try to work together to get them eased, and how can they ensure that the Chinese fur industry is protected in relation to the entire industry internationally, Kenneth Loberg explains emphasizing that in these areas complicated protective factors are shown.

ConfLiCting dutyChina is worried about price fluctuations, which may challenge some of the Chinese farmers’ benefits, if the duty on foreign skins gets reduced. These are some of the conditions of the trade and barriers in the industry, which may conflict. - We are interested in low duties and a more flexible import trade in China, says Kenneth Loberg. And Kopenhagen Fur will not just have one voice to say on the board, but two. - It’s a little unusual that we have two voices. It is possibly because we take an active share in solutions on inspiring the industry and they tend to follow us probably because we have repeatedly shown that we make things happen, Kenneth Loberg stresses, - We are looking forward to start this new cooperation.

As the only foreigner, Kopenhagen Fur enters into a new Chinese organization that regulates and represents the fur industry. The cooperation means much to Kopenhagen Fur, says Kenneth Loberg, Director of Marketing and Business Development of Kopenhagen Fur.

The fur industry is booming in China, and those who look further into industry development can now learn more about modern management skills, fur creation and innovation, professional sales and retail management. In order to improve average education background in China’s fur industry a new MBA programme was launched at Tsinghua University.The MBA project will hopefully build up

a better future for China’s fur business. Already now, almost 100 persons participated in this program which started was launched this autumn.

great teamWell-known experts and professors will share enterprise management skills and classic case analysis when they educate the top executives. They will organize more

functional and interesting events for fur executives and build up useful platforms for them to strengthen their business. The people following the programme come from the fur industry, manufacturing, retails, fashion industry and entrepreneurs who are interested in fur. The programme will last three days every month, five times a year.

Top executives will now be able to share visions and opinions in how to lead the best way. Due to a new MBA program at Tsinghua University, Beijing.
