!This week we changed our focus to the value of Safe and the skill of playing safely when using the oval. This focus encompasses concepts such as playing where you can be seen, playing in stage groups and keeping your hands, feet and objects to yourself. This is the first lesson where Kootingal Public School is explicitly teaching the expectations outlined in our PBL Matrix. The focus until Term 4 Week 6 will remain on the oval and its use. !At Monday’s afternoon assembly, students quickly identified where they thought issues arose while playing on the oval. It is pleasing to note our students are aware of our expectations for safe play and what it looks, feels and sounds like when students aren’t meeting the expectations for safe play. Well done children! !!PBL Lesson Focus Week 9 Oval and safe play Week 10 Oval and when whistle blows stop play and leave the oval Term 4 Week 1 No lesson due to excursions Week 2 Oval and report issues to teachers immediately Week 3 Oval and share space, use equipment correctly and have a plan for play Week 4 Oval and following teacher instructions Week 5 Collection of data for future lesson focus !!!

Our school was on display on Friday in a number of fields. Congratulations to all students of the Regional final of the Premier’s Spell ing Bee but particularly to our representatives Emma Jarrett, Georgia Ford, Tyler Flemming and Mia Stokes. You represented yourselves, families and Kootingal Public School with great pride. Thank you also to Mrs Ward in her organisation of the day. It was a great showcase at Kootingal Public School!

!Congratulations to our Chess Team who competed at Tamworth Public School last Friday. They prepare each Tuesday playing in a competition against each other for the opportunity to represent our school at various events. In the lead up to this competition, there were even more practice sessions. Our teams Kootingal A team scored 10 points, Kootingal B 9.5 points, Kootingal C 9 points and Kootingal D 7.5 points. Each team consisted of 3 players and they played 6 games each throughout the day. Congratulations to Billy Siemsen for winning 5 out of his 6 games. Thank you Mrs Doak and Mrs Ardill for your continuing support of our children in their chess endeavours.

Kootingal Public School is retraining all staff in the implementation and use of Focus on Reading strategies when explicitly teaching the skill of comprehension. Our school-based trainer, Mrs Chegwyn, is guiding all staff in this process.

On Monday 5/6W were using a strategy when examining the concept of democracy and the history of the Magna Carta. They worked in small groups reading to a particular point, noting three interesting words, posing a question and providing a summary of the passage. All students engaged in deep conversation about the interactive text. Great work children! !Our Come & Try Program for Kindergarten 2018 continued this week focusing on transportation using hot air balloons. Children participated in a musical books activity followed by buddy reading. Children then completed a hot air balloon craft activity and participated in a gross motor activity using the parachute. !The Program operates on Wednesday afternoons for the remainder of Term 3 2017. A bus transports students attending

from Kootingal and District PreSchool from 1:30pm and returns the children by 3:15pm. Parents may wish, however, to bring their child at 1:30pm and collect them at 3:15pm. The program will orientate children to school and to the Kindergarten setting, as well as help develop social skills, gross and fine motor skills, literacy and numeracy skills necessary for a confident and smooth start to school life. !At the start of Term 4, our Kindergarten Bright Stars Transition program will commence. This program is designed for students intending to commence Kindergarten at Kootingal Public School. All days will be advertised throughout long day care and pre-school centres and through our normal means of communication. !If you know of a family that has a child who may enrol in Kindergarten next year, please direct them to the school. We welcome parents and children to our school at any time to view our facilities and as a part of our transition program. As well, we would like to offer assistance in choosing a school and ensuring a sound start for each child. !This week we commenced our Parent Teacher Interview process. It is always wonderful to see our families taking this opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher prior to formal report writing in Term 4. Please note, we have another session of interviews next week, Tuesday 12th September between 4 and 6pm. !Please note Kootingal Public School is trialling a new system of booking the interviews. It is through the website School Interviews. This will allow families to book directly with the teacher rather than wait for confirmation. Interviews are only m a d e u s i n g t h e w e b s i t e a d d r e s s www.schoolinterviews.com.au and the event code sxn3b. This will allow families to see the available appointment times for their child’s teacher. Students received notes this week outlining the new process. Please note interview times will close next Monday at 5pm prior to the Parent Teacher Interviews on Tuesday 12th September. !The Kootingal Public School P&C are conducting a Red Food Day on the last day of school, Friday 22nd September. Orders are due to the front office with correct money by Wednesday 20th September. Further items are available for sale during 1st break. !Kootingal Public School commenced the process for the election of the 2018 School Captains. Previously, I wrote to all parents of Year 5 students briefly explaining the process for the election of our School Captains. This week, families received another letter outlining the timeline for this process. It is important to note that this is an election for School Captains and the Vice Captains only. The election of the Student Representative Council (SRC) members will occur in 2018. If families have not received the letter via their child, or have questions requiring clarification, please contact the school. !Good luck to our students in years 3 and 4 who are competing in the Zone Tennis Hot Shots tournament next Monday. This is a regional tournament with the winning team competing in Sydney for the Todd Woodbridge Cup. Our students completed Hot Shots rotations during their Friday sport time, with additional practice sessions conducted during breaks. Last year our team placed 6th in Sydney. Thank you Mrs Simpson and go Kooty!
