The City of Kimberley is initiating a process to strengthen the commu-nity’s brand and calling on members of the com-munity to provide feed-back, insight and per-ceptions of Kimberley.
“Our brand is our story: it’s who we are, what we do, how we do things, our attitudes and our shared vision. As with many communi-ties, Kimberley experi-ences some challenges in communicating our story and articulating our vision, which is why we’re strengthen-ing our brand,” said Kevin Wilson, the City of Kimberley’s Eco-nomic Development Offi cer.
“This is a process that takes time, but one of our fi rst priorities is to listen to the community. Kimberley’s brand is the story of our people, and we want to ensure we’re clear what the community’s desired perceptions are before we begin to strengthen the story and develop tools that help us tell it best.”
The City of Kimberley has posted two surveys, one for Kimberley resi-dents, and one for visi-tors or people outside the community.
Residents can fi ll out the survey online at www.KimberleySur-vey.com, and visitors can fi ll out the survey online at www.Kimber-leyVisitorSurvey.com
For those unable to fi ll out the survey online, printed copies of the survey can be acquired at City Hall at 340 Spo-kane St, and can be dropped off at City Hall upon completion.
For those interested in learning more about the branding process, a branding information session will be held on November 20th, at 7:30 pm at Centennial Hall.
There will be a presen-tation discussing what a brand is and why it’s valuable to a commu-nity, as well as an op-portunity for questions regarding the process.
For more information on Kimberley’s com-munication and brand-ing project, please con-tact Kevin Wilson at the City of Kimberley: [email protected] or 250.427.9666

A few years ago, I was introduced to the ‘Where’s Willy’ web site. This is a site where people would enter the serial number of a Ca-nadian bill (originally only $5 bills, in honour of Wilfred Laurier). They would write a small note on the bill to draw attention to the site and other people receiving that bill later could enter it on the site—enabling it to be tracked.

As you can keep going back to the site to check on your bill’s progress across the land, I was thrilled to see my mon-ey leave the area the very next week. Within two months, after a brief stay in Calgary, it was in the small town of Cabri, Saskatch-ewan.
I was celebrating my money’s travels with some friends when one of them asked what I was so happy about. After all, wouldn’t it be better if that bill had stayed in the commu-nity?
She was right, and besides eloquently de-flating my exuberance, she reminded me of the

BLACK FRIDAY Cranbrook November 16
importance of the lo-cal economy and what makes it run.
This thought had ob-viously occurred to Joey Hoechsman at the Bedroom Furni-ture Galleries when he challenged Ashley Fur-niture Homestore to a Black Friday sale last year. What started as a small event soon blos-somed to something much larger as local business got on board with the idea. Soon, more than 40 business-es became a part of the initiative and local con-sumers took advantage of the great deals.
This year’s event, which takes place on Friday, November 16, is set to eclipse the inaugural Cranbrook Black Friday as busi-nesses prepare to give the best possible deals to anyone entering their doors.
But as you leave these stores with your car packed with awe-some bargains, you should remember an-other Cranbrook resi-dent’s plan for the lo-cal economy. Connor

Stewart, a director on the Cranbrook and Dis-trict Chamber of Com-merce, promoted the 10 per cent shift recently. He pointed to Miner County, South Dakota, and its success in in-spiring the community to spend just 10 per cent more at home. Al-most before the county realized it, there were millions of dollars added to local coffers and troubled busi-nesses were reporting substantial increases in revenue.
Enjoy this year’s Black Friday event. Use this as a chance to get great deals, in-troduce yourself to businesses you may not have visited before and help to keep your money within the com-munity.
While you’re at it, please consider spend-ing a little more at local businesses the whole year round and chances are the next $5 bill you spend may end up right back in your wallet.

Cardio isn’t the only way to lose weight
When you ask people who have decided to lose weight what their exercise regiment is, most of them answer that they do cardio, especially women. While cardio is great for people that are significantly overweight (they need to move so the method used doesn’t really matter when they start), it can be trickier for people wanting to lose those last 5-10 stubborn pounds. When you look at marathon runners, their muscles are quite small because they mainly
use slow twitch muscles which generate a small amount of force for a very long period of time. This makes them extremely fuel efficient because they have become so proficient at sparing energy that they can run for almost a day without stopping. However the quickest way to lose weight isn’t to become fuel efficient, it is rather to boost metabolism by spending energy. Therefore it might be better to focus more on fast twitch muscles (muscles that generate a great amount of force in a short period of time) or on compound exercises (exercises that work more than one muscle at a time). In fact, even though more calories have been burned after a cardio session than after a weight training session, recent studies have shown that weight training boosts the metabolism for about two days after working out while cardio only increases metabolism for about 12 hours post-workout. However, cardio should not be overlooked as it can be a great tool to lose weight when used wisely. Cardio and weight lifting are almost antagonistic since they work on very different energy systems and different muscle fibres, so in order to avoid counterproductive workouts it is best to do cardio sessions on different days than weight training sessions. I would advise alternating workout days and cardio days, doing one of each every second day. For people who usually use cardio as a warm up prior to lifting weights, they should instead warm up by doing sets with less weight than normal or no weights at all, and then go right into their workout (for more information about how to warm up prior to weight training contact me). Cardio sessions when done regularly should not exceed 30 min. and should only be done up to 3 times a week. To boost metabolism, intervals are the best option and always changing the method (running, cycling, elliptical etc.) is best in order to surprise the body continually. For more information about weight loss programs feel free to contact me at 250-464-4046 or e-mail me at [email protected] to book your free consultation.

Overall: Rally-inspired Impreza-based fun awaits your pleasure in sedan and hatchback body styles, and with hot and even hotter tur-bocharged power; Subaru leaves both editions well enough alone for 2013.
Drivetrain: WRX runs with a 265-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder; opt-ing for the STI brings 305 horses into play; Five- and six-speed transmissions, re-spectively, but you’ll be giv-ing your left foot a workout with either one.
For those fans of rally rac-ing who want to drive what the pros drive, there are re-ally only two choices. They can pick the Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart or the Evo-lution. Or, then can go with one of Subaru’s rally bandits (based on the Impreza) that
include the all-wheel-drive WRX and STI, each with its own character and pow-ertrain. Both versions are available in four-door sedan as well as hatchback livery. The only way to tell the two apart is by their rear wings - Actually, make that a shelf - that’s much more prominent on the powerful (and pricier) STI. Returning unchanged is the 265-horsepower turbo-charged 2.5-litre four-cylin-der engine in the WRX while the STI ups the power to 305 and employs a specially strengthened version of the 2.5. The WRX is only avail-able with a fi ve-speed gear-box, with a six-speed stick is fi tted to the STI. Buying any Subaru means that you auto-matically get an all-wheel-drive system that, under nor-mal operation, equally splits
the torque between the front and rear wheels. The STI’s SI-Drive adds a console-mounted rotary knob with three driver-selectable set-tings: Intelligent, for normal/stop-and-go traffi c condi-tions; Sport, which provides quicker throttle response; and Sport Sharp, for the quickest reaction to accel-erator inputs from your right foot. Also along those lines is an STI-exclusive traction-control system with both full-on and partial settings, depending on the level of control desired. There’s also a Brembo-brand brake up-grade with four-wheel “Su-per Sport” anti-lock program that can control the brak-ing at each wheel, which is particularly helpful during hard stopping, according to Subaru.
Overall: The Sonic now comes in original recipe and extra-crispy RS.
Drivetrain: The larger Chevy Cruze lends its four-cylinder engines as well as its standard and automatic transmissions to put a little spring in the Sonic’s step.
Chevrolet’s sub-compact Sonic is trying to vanquish the evil spirits of the Kore-an-built Aveo, and the word is fi nally starting to get the message. Offered in both sedan and mini-wagon for-mats, the Michigan-assem-bled Sonic has plenty of North American style. For 2013, the new fi ve-door RS model adds some aggres-sion with a unique grille and front fascia, 17-inch wheels with low-profi le performance tires, a shiny exhaust and a body that sits
about a half-inch lower. RS also gets leather seats with red fl ashes on the steering wheel and shifter. It uses the same 1.4-litre turbocharged four-banger found in up-scale Sonics, but has more aggressive gear ratios and a stiffer suspension. All Son-ics feature dashboards and control panels that exude an up-level quality rarely seen in the econo-car class and there’s a decent amount of passenger room. More is defi nitely better as far as performance is concerned. Regular Sonics roar to life with a 138-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder, or the optional 138-horsepow-er 1.4-litre four-cylinder tur-bocharged unit that’s stan-dard in the RS. Although horsepower ratings are the same, the turbocharged en-
gine makes 148 pound-feet of torque compared with 125 pound-feet for the base 1.8. A fi ve-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic joins the 1.8, while the turbo is exclusively matched to a six-speed manual. Chevy says the extra-rigid body structure, wide stance and suspension components were tuned by the Corvette engineering team, which ensures that the Sonic deliv-ers a sporty driving experi-ence. Base models arrive as relatively stripped-down price leaders but include 10 standard airbags. Among a variety of new options for 2013 is a six-speaker audio system and MyLink infotainment system with a seven-inch touch screen.
Vroom! e WRX works for getting you there very fast
Stylish and fuel-e cient, the 2013 Sonic is a great family vehicle
PHOTO SUBMITTED
Power and fun await those who decide to invest in the 2013 WRX, a car based on Subaru’s experience winning rallies around the world.
