It was the night before Halloween, 1938, and families around theUSA changed stations on their radios to find themselves listeningto a radio programme featuring Ramon Raquello and his Orchestra.

“A huge flaming object” had fallen out of the sky in Grover's Mill, NewJersey. The programme returned to the music, but then broke off almostimmediately for another bulletin. Something was climbing out of the smoke-filledcrater, something from another planet. It was an alien invasion.Listeners panicked. Some ran onto the streets using wet towels as gas masksand some raced to be with their families in their last moments. Also, phonelines were jammed as desperate citizens tried to find out exactly whatwas happening. What these people didn't realise was that they were listening to Orson Welles'radio play of the science-fiction classic, The War of the Worlds. Welles’impressive production staged the events of the invasion as if they were reallyhappening. It was so realistic that thousands of listeners wereconvinced that a real alien invasion was taking place. How were people fooled so easily? Seventy years ago, very few householdshad a television so people got their news from newspapers or the radio. Theybelieved what they read or heard.

The following day, Welles' name was all over the newspapers and therewere calls for the government to pass laws to stop similar things ever happeningagain. Orson Welles went on to have a glorious film career, but he will never beforgotten as the man who convinced America that the Martians had landed!

My first day in the factory began at 7:30 am. As Iapproached, I was shocked by the dirty, rundown building. The supervisor showed me the basement where I would beworking. It was a huge, noisy boiling hot room where atleast a hundred other girls were already hard at work. I satdown at one of the old sewing machines. Today, I wassewing pockets onto shirts. The other girls thoughtnothing of doing the fifty an hour laid down by thecompany, but after 30 minutes, I’d finished just four. Mysupervisor was annoyed at my slowness and warned that ifI continued like that I wouldn’t get paid.

I worked 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, for a dailywage of 100 rupees – about 1.50! That wasn’t evenenough to buy a tube of toothpaste! I slept on the factoryfloor every night and, because I couldn’t sew fast enough,I was demoted to gluing parts of shoes. The chemicals inthe glue were so strong they brought me out in a rash. Icouldn’t wait for that fortnight to end. Back home now, Irefuse to go in cheap high street shops anymore, becauseI realise how exploited the people who make them are.I’ve started campaigning for ethical fashion; I targetgovernments and big stores, writing them letters tocomplain about sweatshop labour.

When we talk about endangered species, we might mention the sea turtle or the giant panda or maybe even the Asian elephant, but we rarely consider the shark. That’s not surprising when we see sharks in films, TV series and books portrayed as man-eatingpredators. In fact, the shark population has dropped over the last 30 years by 90%, mainly because of illegal fishing. Sharks maybe at the top of the food chain, but they have a vital role in maintaining the ecosystem. One man, Rob Stewart, hasdedicated himself to raising awareness about sharks, whose bad reputation is, he believes, completely undeserved. “Sharks killabout 5 people a year and yet they are loathed,” he says. “Elephants kill at least 100 people but when a single elephant falls inAfrica the world goes crazy.” Stewart first became fascinated by sharks as a child and after graduating with a degree in Marine Biology, he became a wildlifephotographer. If that kind of illegal fishing could happen there, what was happening in the rest of the world? He found thatup to 100 million sharks are being killed every year and a third of the 500 species of shark are under threat of extinction. Shark finsare incredibly valuable as a luxury item particularly for use in shark fin soup. Dried fins go for as much as$300 for half a kilo, but the rest of the shark is discarded. Stewart decided the best way to show the world what was happening wasto make a documentary. After spending his life savings, watching DVDson his laptop and learning the basics of film-making, he set off for CostaRica where he swam with and even hugged the sharks while making hisfilm. In fact, the locals soon proved to be a lot more dangerousthan the sharks. After coming into conflict with organised crime and localauthorities, he had to escape by boat. Another time he caught a flesh-eating disease that led to a stay in hospital. Despite such difficulties,Stewart managed to produce Sharkwater, a powerful documentary aboutthe cruel way mankind treats sharks. “The oceans feed most ofthe planet. It’s a system we can’t mess with,” Stewart says. “It’s not justabout saving sharks, it’s about saving ourselves.”

1 Lord Canterville believes theDowager Duchess of BoltonA became a ghost.B felt the presence of a ghost.C scared the servants.D died because of a ghost.

2 Mr Otis tells Lord Canterville thatAmerica isA full of rich people.B keen to find ghosts.C interested in European culture.D an advanced society.

3 Mrs Umney says the stain on thefloorA was put there for visitors. B appeared when Sir Simon de

Canterville disappeared.C shows the scene of a crime.D is the result of an accident in

the 16th century.

When Mr Hiram B Otis ofAmerica bought CantervilleChase, everyone told him hewas doing a very foolish thing,as there was no doubt at allthat the place was haunted.Indeed, Lord Cantervillehimself had seen it as his dutyto mention the fact to Mr Otis. “We have not lived inthe place ourselves,” said Lord Canterville, “since my great-aunt, the DowagerDuchess of Bolton, was frightened into an illness from which she never reallyrecovered by two ghostly hands being placed on her shoulders as she wasdressing for dinner, and the ghost has been seen by several living members ofmy family, as well as by the vicar. After the unfortunate incident with the Duchess, none of our younger servants would stay with us, and my wife often got very littlesleep at night because of the mysterious noises that came from the corridor andthe library.”“My Lord,” answered Mr Otis, “I come from a modern country where we haveeverything that money can buy. I reckon that if there were such a thing as a ghostin Europe, we'd have it at home in a very short time in one of our museums, or onthe road as a show.”“I fear that the ghost exists,” said Lord Canterville, smiling, "even though it hasavoided your travelling entertainers. It has been well-known for three centuries. Ifyou don't mind a ghost in the house, it is all right. Only you must remember that Iwarned you.”A few weeks after this, the Otis family arrived on a lovely July evening. The air ontheir journey from the railway station was delicate with the scent of pinewoods. Asthey entered the grounds of Canterville Chase, however, the sky suddenlybecame overcast, despite a strange stillness in the air. A big group of black birdspassed silently over their heads, and before they reached the house, some largedrops of rain had fallen.Standing on the steps to receive them was Mrs Umney, the housekeeper. Shesaid in an old-fashioned manner, “I bid you welcome to Canterville Chase.”Following her, they passed through the fine hall into the library, a long, low roomof black wood. Mrs Otis caught sight of a dull red stain on the floor just by thefireplace. She said to Mrs Umney: “I am afraid something has been spilt there.”“Yes, madam,” replied the old housekeeper in a low voice, “blood has been spilton that spot.”“How horrid!” cried Mrs Otis; “It must be removed at once.”The old woman smiled, and answered in the same low, mysterious voice, “It is theblood of Lady Eleanore de Canterville, who was murdered on that very spot byher own husband, Sir Simon de Canterville, in 1575. Sir Simon survived her bynine years, and disappeared suddenly under very mysterious circumstances. Hisbody has never been discovered, but his guilty spirit still haunts the house. Theblood stain cannot be removed, no matter how hard you try. It has been muchadmired by tourists and others.”“Nonsense,” cried Washington Otis, “Pinkerton's Stain Remover will clean it up inno time,” and before the terrified housekeeper could interfere, he fell upon hisknees and began to scrub the floor. Then a flash of lightning lit up the sombreroom, a terrible roar of thunder made them all get to their feet, and Mrs Umneyfainted. Mrs Umney came round after a few moments, but she was still extremelyupset.“I have seen things here, sir,” she said, "that would make anyone’s hair stand onend, and many a night I have not closed my eyes in sleep for the awful things thatare done here.” Mr Otis, however, and his wife warmly assured her that they werenot afraid of ghosts.

Not everyone enjoys being afraid but strangelyenough some people really enjoy the experience. Why is this? For some, the natural high they getfrom the ‘fight or flight’ response is the obviousanswer. In fact, there is strong evidence that ourindividual brain chemistry is the main reason. Theresults of new research, due to be released andshown in a documentary in the coming weeks, showthat people differ in their chemical response tothrilling situations. One of the main hormonesreleased during a scary situation is dopamine, achemical which helps regulate emotions such aspleasure and feeling of reward. According to therecent research, some individuals may get more of akick, or good feeling, from this dopamine responsethan others do. Experts believe that some people’sbrains lack the ability to stop the dopamine releasein the brain, which means some people really enjoyscary situations while others don’t.Getting that positive feeling from being frightened isall about triggering the fight-or-flight response, butin a completely safe space. Haunted houses areperfect for this because they trigger our senses withdifferent atmospheres, sounds and even smells. These senses are directly tied to our fear responseand activate the physical reaction, but our brain hastime to process the fact that these are not “real”threats. Our brain is very fast at doing this. adapted from: http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2013/10/why-do-some-brains-enjoy-fear/280938/

For a lot of students, university can be a mixed bag. On the one hand, academic life can be quite dull, with lectures about uninteresting topics.

It’s a time when students live independently for the first time andcome into contact with people from around the world. One college is tryingto bridge this gap between academic and social life. At Alfred University in New York optional seminar-style classes in recentyears have included Yoga and Meditation, and the Good Life on a Dollar aDay. But, as students learn, this doesn’t have to be the case. Withmany students struggling to get by, this course was very popular! Alfred students have also taken courses explaining the popularity of culturalhits such as the Harry Potter books and the TV show The Sopranos, againbridging the divide between what students enjoy in their free time and whatthey learn in classes. Overall, these classes have been very popular. Onestudent said thatthey created anenvironmentwhere learning forfun was put first.

Gandhi was born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in Indiaon 2nd October, 1869 into a merchant family. When he was19, Gandhi broke with tradition and left India to study Lawin London. Then, in 1891, he accepted a job at an Indianlaw firm in Durban, South Africa, where he remained fortwenty years. During this time, Gandhi developedhis principle of ‘satyagraha’ which means ‘devotion to truth’through non-violent action. Gandhi was sent to prison manytimes for leading peaceful campaigns of civil disobedience. Before he left the country, though, the South Africangovernment made many of the changes he had called for.

Gandhi felt that India could never truly be free aslong as it remained under British rule. He wanted to worktowards Indian independence and create greaterunderstanding between all classes and religious faiths acrossthe country. In 1919, he joined the new Indian NationalCongress Party and launched a policy of peaceful non-cooperation with the British, including a boycott of Britishgoods and institutions. One of Gandhi’s most famousprotests was against the tax on salt imposed by the Britishauthorities. He led thousands of people on a 320 km ‘marchto the sea’ to make their own salt from seawater. Because ofhis various campaigns, Gandhi was imprisoned four times: in1922, 1930, 1933 and 1942.Nevertheless, as a result of Gandhi’s talks and negotiationswith the British government, India won independence in1947. On 30th January 1948, Gandhi, then aged78, was assassinated. The assassin could not acceptGandhi’s belief that all faiths were of equal value. Gandhiwas on his way to a prayer meeting when he was shot threetimes in the chest.

Gandhi maintained his life-long belief in peace, non-violence and that all people were created equally. Hisbeliefs informed all areas of his life; in meetings he alwayswore the simple clothes of an Indian villager, while thepoliticians around him dressed in formal suits. InIndia, he was called ‘Mahatma’ Gandhi which means ‘greatsoul’. There, his birthday is celebrated as an official holidayand also as an international day of non-violence. Gandhispoke to everybody, everywhere when he said, “Be thechange you want to see.” And indeed, his achievementsremain an inspiration to people all over the world; his lifetruly was his message.

My Father’s BeardAs a child growing up, I always remember my father having a beard. Itwas thin and grey, but he used to boast about how magnificent it wasin his youth. “It was thick and all the colours of the rainbow,” he saidproudly.“But not blue and green?” I protested.“Yes, and purple too,” came the reply.I knew he was only joking but that his beard, unimpressive though itwas, meant a lot to him. Then, one day at the breakfast table, I gave a little scream of disbelief. “It’s gone!” I shrieked. “You’ve shaved off your beard!”“Yes,” said my father sadly, “and it’s taken you three weeks to notice it.”

A The young people have embraced the idea of learning thelanguage and even see some advantages in it.

B Whistling is essential to the survival of the farming community.C The whistler also has the benefit of reaching a number of

people at once.D The village even holds an annual festival for the best whistler.E Traditionally, when one person heard a whistle, they passed it

on.

Imagine you lived high on a mountain with no mobile phone or fixed line. What’s the best way to tell your dad at the bottom of the mountain to bring

home some milk? By whistling, of course! That’s how some communitiesaround the world communicate - through a whistled language.

Linguists believe there are about 70 whistled languagesstill in use today, although only 12 are fully understood. Mostare found in isolated areas with difficult terrain, such asmountains or canyons, where communication overdistances is difficult. The obvious advantage of whistledspeech is that it allows the speaker to communicate overlarger distances (up to 5 km) than ordinary speech. Although this is not practical for those wanting a privateconversation, it is a convenient and efficient way to spreadnews fast.

Most whistled languages are based on actual spokenlanguages and are not secret codes. They express thesame information as the spoken language through the tone, length and stress of the whistle. Speakers of whistledlanguages can even switch from whistles to speech in mid-sentence, like many of the residents of the small island ofLa Gomera in the Canary Islands.

Several hundred years ago, the people of thismountainous island developed a whistled language called‘El Silbo’; the name comes from the Spanish verb silbarwhich means ‘to whistle’, and it developed out of theislanders’ need to communicate over inaccessible valleysand towering cliffs. Islanders became so skilled thatmessages were successfully spread from one end of theisland to the other. El Silbo has played a vital role in theisland’s history. It was the main form of communicationduring invasions, wars and immigration. With the advent of

modern forms of communication, such as the telephoneand the mobile phone, though, the use of the whistledlanguage slowly declined.

Today, El Silbo is rarely used in everyday communication;however, it is still used to announce community eventsamong the farming communities. In order to protect thelanguage from dying out, the authorities in La Gomera havemade El Silbo a part of the school curriculum. “It’sless expensive than a mobile phone and it’s fun,” says nine-year-old Andrea.

The people of La Gomera are fiercely proud of theirlinguistic heritage. The same pride can be seen in Kuskoy,Turkey – known as the ‘bird village.’ About 1,000 residents inand around the village also use a whistled language tocommunicate across the rocky valleys. They have 29whistles, one for each letter of the Turkish alphabet. Thewhistled language is a direct translation of Turkish words andhas been passed down from generation to generation in thisrural community. Locals are determined not to let their birdlanguage die out as they face the onslaught of moderntechnology. “Most people here are farmers and still whistleacross the valleys to communicate with their neighbours,”explains one of the residents. It’s an event thatbrings out the entire community to celebrate their uniquelinguistic heritage. The message from Kuskoy is simple:despite all the advances that have been made in the field ofcommunication, sometimes the old ways are still the best.

Music fans have had much to thank technology for in thelast 20 years. Not only are they able to take more of theirfavourite music with them wherever they go thanks tothe move from CDs to MP3s, they no longer need to buya whole album if they don’t want to either. Instead theycan download only the tracks they particularly like. Andbecause performers are going on more tours in order toearn the money that they made in the past from CDsales, there are more concerts to attend than ever.Technology plays its part in those live performancestoo. The shows are more spectacular than ever, withgiant screens, fabulous lasers and lights and dazzling, changing stage sets. The audience is also often loadedwith technology, especially in the form of smart phonesor mobile phones. Go to any rock concert these daysand you’ll see a sea of hands holding up mobile phonesto photograph or even video the action on stage. So what are the arguments for making concert venuesmobile-free zones? First of all, many people say the use of mobile phones atrock concerts affects people’s enjoyment of the event. When someone holds up a mobile phone at a concert, they block the view of the people behind them. Ifthey’re concentrating on the image on their phone, thenthey aren’t fully appreciating the show they came to see.The general atmosphere is affected as well, because themore people there are recording the event on theirphones in the audience, the fewer people there are

dancing and clapping. Audience participation becomesjust a sea of hands waving gadgets. Aren’t rock concertssupposed to be more than that?Whether or not you think it’s bad-mannered to use yourphone’s camera or video camera at a concert, in manycountries it’s actually against the law. Althoughthe number of fan-made concert videos on YouTubesuggests that neither the stars nor the police really careabout the legal issue, one star has tried to do somethingabout it. In 2007, Prince banned fans from takingphotos or videoing him at a series of concerts inLondon, and security staff searched fans’ bags forcameras before the start of the show. Prince has alsoturned to the courts to have video footage of hisconcerts removed from YouTube, arguing that he wantsfans to remember his shows in their heads rather thanvia poor-quality video. At classical music concerts, people are less likely to usephones to record a performance. But there is a growingproblem with people using their phones to text or even toreceive and make calls during performances, accordingto British composer Peter Maxwell Davies. In 2011, hesaid people who used their phones at concerts shouldpay fines. Although this could cause a lot of resentmentamong concert-goers. At least one phonemanufacturer is working on a way to send signals from aconcert stage to the audience which will stop theirphones from working during the performance.

A That’s because you need to get the permission of the performer before you record a gig for copyright reasons.B They are spoiling their own experience of the event too.C But some performers and fans think concerts are no place for them and we should leave them outside.D Many people say that there was a more formal atmosphere at concerts in the past. E The best solution to the problem may actually be a technological one.

1 The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in HawaiiA detected that there had been a huge earthquake.B were not aware of the tsunami. C tried to send out a warning about the tsunami.D didn’t understand the sea level data on the

tsunami.

2 When the sea receded before the tsunami, it A attracted sightseers to the beach.B was a warning most people recognised.

C lasted for several hours before the tsunami struck.D made no sound at all.

3 A man from India realised the receding sea was awarning because heA had learnt about this at school.B saw animals running away.C was told about it by a British girl.D had seen a TV programme about it.

The earthquake triggered a series of devastating tsunamisthat travelled thousands of kilometres across the IndianOcean, flooding coastal communities and holiday resorts, killing tens of thousands of people in countries as far apartas Indonesia, the Maldives, Sri Lanka and Somalia. In additionto large numbers of local residents, foreign tourists (mostlyEuropeans) enjoying the peak holiday travel season wereamong the dead or missing.Despite a delay of up to several hours between the earthquakeand the impact of the tsunamis, most people were takencompletely by surprise. Since tsunamis rarely occur in the IndianOcean, there was no system in place to detect tsunamis. As aresult, the general public living in coastal communities had nowarning that they were about to be hit. Tsunamis are muchmore frequent in the Pacific Ocean and an effective tsunamiwarning system has long been in place there. As a matter offact, the only people in the world to have had any indicationwhat was about to happen were the scientists at the PacificTsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii. But even they had no ideathat the earthquake had unleashed an ocean-wide tsunami. The seismologists had seismic signals but had no way ofdetermining how large the quake was. They also had no sea-level data to detect or measure the tsunami and no system forbroadcasting a warning. It took about two hours for officials tolearn how huge it actually was.The only warning of an impending tsunami came minutesbefore the tsunami struck. Witnesses said they heard a loudroar coming from the ocean. They also said that the waterlinesuddenly receded, exposing hundreds of metres of seabed, stranding fish and boats on the sand. These are classic signs ofan approaching tsunami. Tragically, many people went down to

the beach to look, some to collect stranded fish and others totake photographs of the unusual phenomenon. Theseobservers had no idea what the sea’s strange retreat meant. They did not realise that it would be returning within minuteswith unthinkable rage, demolishing everything in its path.People who did know what the receding ocean meant, gathered family and friends and ran for high ground. A Britishnewspaper reported that a ten-year old British girl named TillySmith, on holiday in Thailand, saved her family and possiblyothers when she warned them to flee a beach. She hadrecognized danger signs after learning about tsunamis inGeography class. In India, a local man reported that he recalledwatching a documentary about tsunamis and knew that areceding ocean was a sign of trouble. He saved almost hisentire village of some 1,500 people by sounding the alarm andleading people to high ground. Animals fleeing for safety wasanother sign of imminent danger. Wildlife experts believe theycan sense seismic vibrations long before we can. Many peoplereported that they saw animals running to the hills minutesbefore the tsunamis arrived. As a result of the Indian Ocean tsunami, the internationalcommunity is now calling for the formation of an earlywarning system there. However, a great deal of importancehas been placed on the technological aspects of such a system- seismometers and sensors. Experts caution that this alonemay not be enough to prevent another disaster. Even thefinest warning system, with the best technology, will beuseless without the means to transmit warnings to the properauthorities. Scientists expect another deadly tsunami tohappen again in the Indian Ocean. The only question is when:it could be tomorrow or in a few hundred years.

The RecoveryOn the morning of December 26, 2004, an earthquake measuring 9.3 on the Richter scale struck deep under the IndianOcean near the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

5 Which is stated as an opinion, not a fact?A The idea of a tsunami hitting is frightening.B Having coral reefs would make people feel safer.C Coral reefs can protect the coastline.D Damage is more severe where there are no

If we want to prevent future catastrophes, we mustrespect the fragile ecosystems. Too often, however, mangroves and coral reefs which protected the coast havebeen sacrificed for holiday resorts and shrimp farms. Ourstudy found that tsunami destruction is much more severewhere the mangroves have been cut down. Of course, thethought of any tsunami hitting anywhere along our coastis extremely frightening and once one is formed, there isno stopping it. However, in my view people would feelbetter knowing that coastlines are somewhat protectedbecause of natural coastal habitats like coral reefs. For oursafety, it is very important that we protect, conserve, and

restore coral reefs as they protect us in the end.Japan is prone to tsunamis and we can also look there forideas. They have built numerous tsunami walls along thecoast of heavily populated areas. The tsunami walls aredesigned to absorb some of the energy of the tsunami andredirect some of the water back towards the open ocean.Buildings should be built on higher ground and thoseanywhere near the coastline designed to allow the giantwave to pass through the structure while causing minimumdamage. Large doorways and windows offer a clear pathfor the water to go through and can be easily replacedafterwards.
