Commodore’s Message

This newsletter marks the close of an eventful year for the KBSC.

We weathered tragedy with the loss of Larry Wiggins and Mike

Haberski at the start of the summer season. We also celebrated

a well-earned season win for Bob Robinson and Val Adase in the

168 bouy series, as well as a hard-fought open class season win

for Don Ford. The club had a Treasure Hunt, Lunches on the

Lake, and Sunday Cruises, as well as the "Long Race" series. We

have one more event for this year, and that is the Turkey Cup,

on November 19.

Our turnout for the general meetings is down enough that we

have scaled back to only two general meetings in the year,

rather than three; but the people that do attend have had really

good times, especially this past Commodore's Ball. We dropped

catering and went back to pot luck side dishes, with the club providing steaks and Cornish game hens for the members and a small charge for their guests. Club and Board member Bill McDougall volunteered his band, "Without A Net", for the music and dancing ensued right up to closing time. I daresay a good time was had by all. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Konocti Bay Sailing Club Board of Directors. These people are dedicated to providing the opportunity to enjoy sailing here on Clear Lake, and they work hard to generate enthusiasm among the membership for our events. They also have supported me by cheerfully volunteering to take on the necessary work a lot of our events entail, without my having to corner people and plead/arm-twist them to get these things done. Your Board is trying to provide a venue for all of our sailors at some point in the year, so give us some feedback on what worked for you and what did not. It can get discouraging when we respond to what we perceive to be a desire of the membership, but is not attended at all, or poorly attended at best. But these folks on the Board refuse to show any discouragement, and continue to work on ideas to get the membership involved in participating and supporting the club.

I have to report that the slate of the Board of Directors as published in the September newsletter incorrectly had too many people on it. I should have caught that error before it went public, but that train has already left the station. The By-Laws provide for 9 Board positions. Four of them are defined slots: Commodore, Vice-Commodore, Treasurer, and Secretary. The Past Commodore position is also defined, but the By-Laws state it as the IMMEDIATE Past Commodore. The Board is going to propose an amendment to remove the word "immediate", so as to open the position up to more possible candidates. The other four positions are Director positions, but three of them have specific roles defined: Director-Rear Commodore, Director-Membership Chairman, and Director-Social Chairman. There is only one Director-at-Large position defined.

The slate that was presented had separate Membership Chairman and Rear Commodore candidates designated and four Director-at-Large candidates. I have discussed the situation with the eleven elected members of the board and have come up with the solution to excuse Don Ford and John Diederich from this year's Board. Don is still in the recovery process from the stroke he suffered this past summer, and John had feared that he had over-committed himself due to his active sailing program in the Bay, but wanted to support the club however he could. I thank them both for their willingness to step up for the club's needs, and know that I can count on them in the future. Pending the change to the By-Laws concerning the Past Commodore position, Gary Jolley has graciously agreed to fill that post for the upcoming year.

Soooooo, not the smoothest of years for the club, nor a banner year for member participation, but not the worst of years, either. I see increased participation on the Wednesday afternoon OSiRs sails, but that has not yet translated into increased participation on our Saturday sails. Hopefully that will change over time as more novices become confident in their sailing capabilities. In the meantime, the Board will continue to try to schedule as many varieties of activities as we can think of to get you out on the lake!

MEMBERSHIP CHAIR REPORT:

Two new member applications received this period. One person not known by the board, no sponsor on form. The membership chairman will contact this person, to obtain more information and who is the sponsor. Need

to be careful not to approve person not known to club as a member, because roster has personal contact information of members. The membership form on internet will be changed to include name of sponsor. Membership chairman will then double check with the sponsor. Can pay membership dues online via credit card or paypal. If membership payment received for person whose application is not approved, by the board, money will be refunded.

OLD BUSINESS:

COMMODORE'S BALL:

Including Band, 46 people signed up. 4 people who signed up weren't able to attend. Keeping free for members with a pot luck theme is a good idea.

KEYS FOR BOARD MEMBERS:

Not all board members have keys to all cabinets. Still need to follow up with Dale at Lake County Locks to change locks for cabinets so that all cabinets have the same key and possibly Entry Door and storage area doors.

Old Salts in Retirement (OSIRs)

WIND SHADOW AND COVERING A great introduction on how to use your wind shadow to cover someone, and how to escape a cover without losing too much ground. We introduce a new wind shadow feature in the raceQs' replay that changes size with the speed of the wind. The wind shadows project with the apparent wind angle, and add a whole new dimension to the 3D replays.

Though not affiliated with KBSC, many of our members

sail with the “OSIRS” every Wednesday rain or shine,

winter or summer. Skippers meet at noon for lunch and

course discussion. Racing begins at 1 pm.

Come enjoy beautiful Clear Lake with this fun group of

passionate sailors at Braito’s Marina. Bring a bag lunch

and a willingness to learn. A boat and retirement are

not required. OSIRs (Old Salts in Retirement) | Facebook

OSIRs is an excellent way to get into sailing. New

sailors are especially urged to start with OSIRs

Wednesdays. Remember to wear appropriate sneakers

or shoes, bring water, a hat, and life vest if you have

one.
