Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace’s operations are directed at the national and international defense and aerospace markets. Main products and solutions include anti-ship missiles, command and weapons control systems, and communication systems. Alliances with major foreign defence enterprises are a key part of the international marketing strategy.

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace was challenged with several disparate, project defined, TechPubs solutions consisting of proprietary tools and formats. These solutions were not scalable to meet their success in business involving a rapidly growing number of customers with numerous configurations of the systems to be supported all over the world.

In addition, many new customer requirements involve the use of the international standard S1000D for the procurement and production of technical publications. None of the existing solutions could meet this requirement.

CORENA SUITE MANUFACTURER SOLUTION

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace recognized the need for building their future publication structure on a modular international standard. Given the industry area the S1000D specification was a natural choice.

CORENA SUITE Manufacturer Solution was selected to provide a single source system for managing the production and delivery processes of the Technical Publications projects. The core of the system is the CORENA SUITE Knowledge Center with additional modules for IPC generation and advanced publishing. Output from the system includes S1000D Transfer Packages, traditional page oriented publications in PDF, and browser based Interactive Electronic Technical Publications (IETP), all from the same single source.

The Results

After implementing the CORENA SUITE system Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace shows significantly shorter delivery times and lower project costs for the Technical Publications projects.

More projects than before can be handled in parallel by the same staff through a high degree of reuse of information and efficient publishing methods.

The decision to implement the S1000D standard also makes Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace compliant with current and future demands from the defence industry partners and customers.

Another important benefit of S1000D is the implicit freedom of choice it gives system owners to choose suppliers of their IT solutions and services. All data is now in non-proprietary, independent, formats and nothing binds the users to a specific vendor. This motivates CORENA SUITE to stay “best of breed” in order to maintain its position.
