    About this manual

    Observe this general information about the EM 2040 Installation; its purpose and targetaudience.

    Purpose

    The purpose of this manual is to provide the information and basic drawings required forthe physical installation of the EM 2040.

    For more detailed information about the practical use of the EM 2040, refer to theOperator manual and/or the Reference manual.

    Target audience

    The manual is intended for technical personnel; such as skilled shipyard workers,electricians, qualified engineers and naval architects. It is assumed that you understandthe general principles of maritime electronic equipment. You must also be familiar withcomputer hardware, interface technology and installation of electronic and mechanicalproducts.

    We assume that you are familiar with the basic acoustic principles of sound in water,and that you have some experience with multibeam and/or single beam echo sounders inhydrographic applications.

    Installation instructions

    You must follow the instructions in this manual to ensure optimal performance. As aguide, installation procedures are presented in the order they must be done.

    The equipment described in this manual includes the complete system with relevantcabinets. Units provided locally by the customer, installation shipyard or localrepresentative are not described.

    The manual also defines the equipment responsibility, and provides applicableinstructions for unpacking and storage of units.

    Installation drawings

    The customer, or the shipyard contracted to do the installation, must provide relevantdetailed vessel specific mechanical drawings.Note

    If required, all drawings provided by the shipyard for the physical installation ofthe EM 2040 must be approved by the vessel’s national registry and correspondingmaritime authority and/or classification society. Such approval must be obtained beforethe installation can begin. The shipowner and shipyard doing the installation areresponsible for obtaining and paying for such approval.

    Kongsberg Maritime AS may, on special order, provide assistance to these drawings.

    Applicable generic outline dimension and productions drawings are provided in theDrawing file chapter.

    System DescriptionThe Kongsberg EM 2040 is an advanced multibeam echo sounder.

    Key features include:• Frequency range from 200 to 400 kHz• FM chirp allowing much longer range capability (depth and coverage) compared

    to CW pulses• Complete roll, pitch and yaw stabilization• Nearfield focusing on both transmit and receive• Operates with very short pulse lengths – shortest pulse is 25 microseconds• The depth rating of the subsea parts is 6000 metres• IHO-S44 special order compliant• The EM 2040 has two TX array sizes:

    – EM 2040-04 (0.4 degrees at 400 kHz)– EM 2040-07 (0.7 degrees at 400 kHz)

    The EM 2040 multibeam echo sounder is the first system to bring all the advancedfeatures of deep water multibeams to the near bottom sounding environment.

    The EM 2040 operating bandwidth is from 200 to 400 kHz, which is a full octave, andthis is achieved using the standard transducers. Three standard modes are available. 300kHz is used for normal operation, giving an optimum balance between high resolution,

    depth capability and tolerance of performance deteriorating factors such as water columnsediments. 200 kHz is available for meeting requirements to operate at the standardhydrographic single beam frequency, but also to achieve the best depth capability. 400kHz is provided for inspection work with the utmost resolution.

    EM 2040 has the functionality of the lower frequency EM systems, and the small size andweight advantage of the high frequency systems, as well as beamwidth of 0.4 degrees.

    FM pulses are used to increase the maximum range capability without sacrificingresolution. Example: 12 ms FM with 1.7 kHz sweep bandwidth compared to 600 us CWpulse (1.7 kHz bandwidth): The resolution is the same since the bandwidth is the same.The signal to noise ratio in FM mode is increased by 13 dB. This has the same effect asincreasing the transmit power level by 13 dB. The range resolution (defined as cT/2) for600 us CW pulse is 45 cm. A 4.5 ms CW pulse would give the same coverage as 12 msFM. But this CW pulse would give a range resolution of 200 cm (= 4.5 * 45 cm).

    The normally recommended survey frequency is 300 kHz. At this frequency thebandwidth used is more than 75 kHz with three angular sectors running at separatefrequencies. With dual swath six frequencies are used (with shortest pulse the totalbandwidt used is more than 100 kHz). The minimum pulse length is 70 microseconds inthree sectors, and reduced to 35 microseconds using one sector. With 35 μs pulse therange resolution (defined as cτ/2) is 26 mm. For deep waters FM chirp is employed witha bandwidth of 1.7 kHz. This allows a swath width in the order of 600 m and a depthcapability of about 400 m in cold ocean waters.

    The 200 kHz frequency mode is similar to the 300 kHz mode. It uses the same CW pulselengths, while the FM chirp pulse length is increased. The range and depth resolution isthe same. Normally two sectors are used per swath, but single sector can also be used. Atthis frequency the absorption in the water is lower than at 300 kHz, resulting in increasedswath width and depth capability. In cold ocean waters with FM chirp a swath width of700 m can be expected and approximately 500 m depth capability.

    The 400 kHz frequency mode is intended for high resolution inspection work. Very shorttransmit pulses and wide receiver bandwidth is used. The operator may select betweenone and three transmit sectors. With a single RX transducer the coverage limit is 120degrees (±60 degrees), and with dual RX the coverage is 180 degrees (±90 degrees). Theshortest pulse used is 25 μs giving a range resolution less than 20 mm (cτ/2). It is alsopossible to run dual swath, but not using the shortest pulse length.

    The EM 2040 is modular, allowing the user to tailor the beamwidths to the operationalrequirements, 0.4 by 0.7 degrees or 0.7 by 0.7degrees. The transmit fan is divided intothree sectors pinging simultaneously at separate frequencies. This ensures a very strongand beneficial dampening of multibounce interference which on simpler systems oftenis seen at beam angles from 60 degrees and outwards. The EM 2040 has dual swathcapability, allowing a sufficient sounding density alongtrack at a reasonable vessel speed.

    EM 2040 also has a scanning mode, i.e. one sector is transmitted at a time, giving thepossibility to use the shortest pulse length while still keeping the full swath coverage.

    The standard depth rating of the EM 2040 subsea parts is 6000 m. The system is idealfor use on subsea vehicles such as AUVs or ROVs. All analog electronics are contained

    in the transducers, and communication to the topside processing unit is on standardEthernet. For subsea vehicle use the processing unit may be installed in a pressure ratedtank with an inner diameter as small as 230 mm.

    System diagramThe system diagram identifies the main components of the EM 2040 system, as wellas the key connections between these units. Interface capabilities and power cablesare not shown.

    The standard EM 2040 multibeam echo sounder system consists of one transmittransducer, one receive transducer, one Processing Unit (PU) and one HydrographicWork Station (computer).

    A complete system for seabed mapping will in addition include a transducer mountingplate, a motion sensor, a heading sensor, a sound velocity sensor and a positioning system.

    Transducer descriptionThe transducers are the devices that transmit sound into the water and receive theecho. They are fully water tight units intended for many years of trouble-free operationin rough seas.

    The EM 2040 consists of separate transducers fortransmit and receive.

    The system may be delivered in different versionswith different transmission beam width. The standardtypes are:• EM 2040-04 (0.4 degrees at 400 kHz)• EM 2040-07 (0.7 degrees at 400 kHz)Note

    The red protective coating is an vital part of the transducer. It is very important thatneither this coating nor the internal parts of the transducer are damaged during thehandling, installation or cleaning. Any holes and/or scratches in the transducer surfacewill allow water to penetrate the transducer. If a leak occurs, the transducer must bereplaced.

    A transducer must always be handled as a delicate item. Any wrongful handling maydamage the transducer beyond repair.

    Observe these rules:1 Do not activate the transducer when it is out of the water.2 Do not lift the transducer by the cable.3 Do not step on the transducer cable.4 Do not handle the transducer roughly, avoid impacts.

    5 Do not expose the transducer to direct sunlight or excessive heat.6 Do not use high pressure water, sand blasting or metal tools to clean the transducer

    face.7 Do not use strong solvents to clean the transducer face.8 Do not damage the outer protective skin on the transducer.

    EM 2040 Processing Unit descriptionThe EM 2040 Processing Unit is provided to process the signals to and from thetransducer(s) .The EM 2040 Processing Unit is an industrialcomputer using both COTS (commercial off-the-shelf)components and custom made components. The unit isdesigned and tested for rugged use. The Processing Unit is the central controlling devicein the EM multibeam system. It administers the transmittal of pings via the TX unit(s)and reception of data from the RX unit(s).

    The processing unit also supplies 48 Vdc power to the transducer(s).

    Hydrographic Work Station descriptionThe Hydrographic Work Station is a maritime computer. It contains the operationalsoftware, and offers the user interface that allows you to control the EM 2040 system.

    A dedicated maritime computer is provided withthe Kongsberg EM 2040 system. It is set up with allnecessary software.

    The computer is based on the Microsoft® Windows®7 operating system.

    The computer is normally mounted on the bridge orin a scientific laboratory.

    In this publication, the computer is referred to as the Hydrographic Work Station.

    Ethernet switchA high capacity Ethernet switch is sometimes required.

    If you use more than one Processing Unit in your EM 2040 system, you must use anEthernet switch to connect each Processing Unit to the Hydrographic Work Station.

    A high capacity Ethernet switch (1000BASE-T) is included in the EM 2040 delivery.

    Note

    It is very important that high quality Ethernet cables are used everywhere. You mustuse CAT-5E cables or better. Cables with lower bandwidth capacity will reduce theEM 2040 performance.

    1000BASE-T (also known as IEEE 802.3ab) is a standard for gigabit Ethernet overcopper wiring. Each 1000BASE-T network segment can be a maximum lengthof 100 meters (330 feet), and must use Category 5 cable or better (including Cat5e and Cat 6).

    Remote Control Unit (K-Rem) descriptionA dedicated junction box has been designed to provide remote on/off switches with lightindication and interface to a remote synchronizing system. The junction box contains aterminal block and four switches with lamps mounted in the front.Note

    The Remote Control Unit is not a standard part ofthe EM 2040 delivery.

    The Remote Control Unit is called K-Rem. It isprepared for remote control and interface to an external synchronization system forthe following Kongsberg echo sounders:• One Sub-bottom profiler (SBP 120 or SBP 300)• Two EM multibeam echo sounders• One EA single beam echo sounder

    The Remote Control Unit is designed to be mounted in a 19 inch rack, but it is alsopossible to mount it on a flat surface or in a bulkhead. It is also prepared for mountingon telescopic rails.

    Read this firstDetailed information about cable specifications, termination and connectors is provided.Unless otherwise specified, all cables are supplied by Kongsberg Maritime as a partof the EM 2040 delivery.Note

    All electronic installations and corresponding wiring must be in accordance with thevessel's national registry and corresponding maritime authority and/or classificationsociety. If no such guidelines exist, we recommend that Det Norske Veritas (DNV GL)Report No. 80-P008 "Guidelines for Installation and Proposal for Test of Equipment"is used as a guide.

    Only trained and authorized personnel can install the EM 2040 cables.

    A detailed drawing for each specific cable is provided. Each drawing provides additionalinformation, and may, when applicable, include minimum specifications, connectorterminations and the required number of cores.

    Drawings are generally not provided for standard commercial cables.

    Cables fall into two categories.1 System cables: These cables are provided by Kongsberg Maritime as a part of the

    EM 2040 delivery.2 Shipyard cables: These cables must be provided by the shipyard performing the

    installation, or the shipowner. It is very important that the cables used meet theminimum specifications provided in this manual.

    Kongsberg Maritime accepts no responsibility for damage to the system or reducedoperational performance caused by improper wiring.Note

    It is very important that all cables are properly installed and correctly terminated.Observe the relevant regulations and work standards. Always leave enough cable slackclose to system units and cabinets to allow for maintenance.

    While RS-232 is the mostcommon serial interface for communicating with external devices using the NMEAstandard, it only allows for one transmitter and one receiver on each line.RS-422 provides a mechanism for transmitting data up to 10 Mbits/s. This interfaceformat uses a balanced signal on two wires. This increases both the maximum baudrate and the physical length of the cable, and it reduces the noise. With a high qualitycable, you can use RS-422 on distances up to 1500 meters even in noisy environments.RS-422 is also specified for multi-drop applications.     External SynchronizationThe Processing Unit (PU) is equipped with a connection for interface to an externalsynchronization system.

    External synchronization input/output

    When multiple echo sounders are employed on a vessel it is essential to optimizethe timing of the transmitting of each system. The Kongsberg Maritime K-SyncSynchronizing Unit provides highly configurable timing.

    The EM 2040 provides the following synchronization signals:

    • Ready To Transmit: This is an output signal from the EM 2040 to the synchronizationsystem that goes active when the EM is ready to transmit. The signal is inactive whenthe echo sounder is transmitting, receiving or processing samples.

    • Trig out: The EM 2040 issues a trig out signal. The trig out signal starts before thefirst transmit pulse and is terminated after the end of the last transmit pulse. For EM2040 all pulses in one swath are transmitted simultaneously. With dual swath, twopulses are transmitted in sequence. The length of this trig signal is 0.7 ms plus thetotal TX signal length. For CW pulses the actual TX pulse is 1.5 times the nominalpulse length (because of amplitude tapering).Reference to the Raw range and angle 78 datagram:The transmit time for the TX pulse is referred to the centre of the pulse.The total length of the TX pulse is given in the datagram (Signal length).The time delay from the leading edge of the trig out pulse to the centre of the firstTX pulse is:– 506 us + 0.5 * signal length.Example of signal length (200 kHz, Normal sector):– Short CW: 101 µs– Medium CW: 288 µs– Long CW: 865 µs– Short FM: 3 ms– Long FM: 12 ms

    • Trig in: The EM 2040 can be triggered by an external signal that will cause the echosounder to ping. The CBMF board is equipped with an optocoupler at this input. Theinput series resistor is tuned for a TTL signal (Low level3.2 V).There is a delay from the external trig signal is received to the start of the transmitpulse (Trig out). This is caused by signal processing in the TX transducer (pitchstabilization, focus range etc).The delay is minimum 1.5 ms and depends on the number of transmit pulses per ping(to optimize pitch stabilization). This means that the delay depends on ping mode(frequency), sector mode and swath mode (single/dual).

    External Synchronization cable

    This connection is used for interface to an external synchronization system (for exampleK-Sync) used when multiple echo sounders are employed on the same vessel. Theexternal synchronization connector is located on the CBMF board of the processing unit.

    This is an optically isolated connection that requires ~10mA current. Input power andresistor value must be adjusted accordingly.

    The connector is RJ45 type.

    This cable must be provided by the installation shipyard.

    connector becomes very dry, it should be soaked in fresh water before use• General cleaning and removal of any accumulated sand or mud on a connector should

    be performed using spray based contact cleaner (isopropyl alcohol). New greasemust be applied again prior to mating.

    • Always apply grease before mating:Greasing and mating above water (dry mate):– Connectors must be greased with Molykote® 44 Medium before every mating.– A layer of grease corresponding to minimum 1/10 of socket depth should be

    applied to the female connector.– The inner edge of all sockets should be completely covered, and a thin transparent

    layer of grease left visible on the face of the connector.– After greasing, fully mate the male and female connector in order to secure optimal

    distribution of grease on pins and in sockets.– To confirm that grease has been sufficiently applied, de-mate and check for grease

    on every male pin. Then re-mate the connector.Greasing and mating under water (wet mate):– Connectors must be greased with Molykote® 44 Medium before every mating.– A layer of grease corresponding to approximately 1/3 of socket depth should be

    applied to the female connector.– All sockets should be completely sealed, and transparent layer of grease left visible
