FROM THE PRESIDENT

After twelve years of committed and loving service to Tree of Life Congregation,

we were informed yesterday (7/15/2015) by Risa Strauss our Education Direc-

tor, she has decided to accept a new position. Though this has happened quick-

ly, we are confident in our prospects for the future.

Risa will be leaving us on July 29th. We have accepted her resignation and only

wish her the best in her new endeavors.

Risa has generously offered to assist the Board, Rabbi and to-be appointed

Search Committee to help ensure a successful transition for her successor. We

welcome your input and will keep you informed as we move ahead with this pro-

cess.

We hope you will join us in wishing her well in her new future. We will always be

grateful for the contribution she has made. Please join us on Friday night July

31st at 7:30pm so that we may honor her and express our thanks.

This once again is a moment of transition and opportunity for Tree of Life.

Be assured, your TOL Officers, Board Members and Rabbi are committed to guiding us through this transition as smooth-

ly as possible.

You can find enclosed a message from Risa to you her congregational community.

Together we are the Tree of Life family. We look forward to you joining us, our leadership team, and each other in building

a vital future for our congregation.

Thank you for you continuing support.

Warm regards,

Richard Cohn Sr.

President

WELCOME TO TOL

We have welcomed many changes at TOL over the past few months. Not only

has Rabbi Joseph come on board but we would also like to welcome our new

office manager, Elizabeth Tyler. Elizabeth has been working with us for sever-

al months but has officially came on board as the office manager at the end

of June.

She comes to us from an administrative and management background. Eliz-

abeth has been working in the medical field for over 10 years and specialized

in optometry where she became an ABO certified optician. Although she en-

joyed her time as an optician she enjoys life here at Temple even more. Eve-

ryone has been very helpful and welcoming.

Elizabeth is married to Chris and they have lived in Lexington for the past 7

years. They have two children, one grandson and two fur babies. When they

have free time they all love to be out on the lake.

If you haven’t met Elizabeth yet stop by the Temple office. She would love to meet you.

FROM THE RABBI

As the Summer Heats Up…

What a gracious and warm welcome I have received from Tree of Life Con-

gregation members in my first month in South Carolina. Thank you for your

hospitality, your time, your stories and your company. I look forward to get-

ting to know many more of our wonderful members as the year goes by.

Warmth and heat seemed to be the theme of the month of July as I accus-

tom myself to life here in “hot” Columbia. Beshert (destined) – not only be-

cause I love the heat, but because as July moves into August the themes

of our Jewish year heat up as well!

The last day of this month of July is a little known Jewish festival known as

Tu B’Av. In Talmudic times it was considered a major celebration even

greater than the day of Yom Kippur. It was a day when the young women of Jerusalem would borrow white dresses

and go and dance among the vineyards, so that the young men could choose their brides. Hence over time it became

known as the Jewish day of love. What could be more “hot” than romance in the middle of the summer?

Since Tu B’Av occurs as the nights grow warmer and longer, it was also considered an apt time to ramp up one’s

study of Torah to take advantage of the extra light. This study doubled as preparation for the month which follows the

month of Av. Elul, beginning on the evening of the 14th August, is a calendar time that celebrates another Jewish

“hot” relationship.

In Elul we focus on our love of God. The rabbis speak of the name of this month as being an acronym for a line from

the flirtatious biblical book the Song of Songs. Each letter in the word Elul is the first letter to the words “Ani L’Dodi

v’Dodi Li” (I am my Beloved’s and my Beloved is mine). It is a month to dedicate ourselves to fostering a romance

with God but also to make ourselves worthy of God’s love.

As I continue my stream of conscious thinking in the heat of summer around our July/August theme of love, I would

be remiss if I did not remark on loving relationships with this congregation now ended.

At the end of June and in late July we said warm and fond farewells to both Rabbi Daniel Sherman and Risa Strauss

as members of Temple staff. They have been your teachers and guides in Jewish living. Your relationships with both

of them have enhanced your being, that of your families and this community. We thank them for all that they have

given. I thank them for leaving in my trust this wonderful community. I pray that I am worthy of their warmth and their

legacy.

Such is the way of love. As our relationships end, we know we have grown and must continue to develop so that we

may move on. I am here as your interim rabbi, and hope that we not only develop a special relationship together, but

that as your “in-between” person, I will help you ready yourselves for the warmest of relationships with new profes-

sionals, so that the future of your congregation will be as “hot”, if not “hotter” than ever. Let us enjoy the now, to cre-

ate the warmest and most wonderful of futures.

August Deadline, Sunday, August 9, 2015

Thank you to everyone who purchased gift

cards in June/July. We are doing great—but

we still need more people to give the TOL

Bucks Back a try. It’s easy to do, it doesn’t

cost any extra, and it’s a great way for the

Temple to earn some extra funds.

Bucks Back cards make a great gift for any oc-

casion!

Temple’s easiest fundraiser. Have any ques-

tions or need assistance? Contact Amy

Welcome to another year of excitement and getting together with the ladies of WRJ/Sisterhood. We have many up-

coming events which should interest each of you in some capacity. Gatherings will take place at different times and

if SITTERS and RIDES are needed, let us know.

Membership packets will be sent in August and for those who return their forms quickly, paid-up members will be

able to attend our OPENING MEETING in SEPTEMBER FREE OF CHARGE. Look for your invitation in the mail. The

most important job you have is filling out the forms and sending them back.

Your new board is hard at work shaping up the year so that being a member is significant to all who join. You'll be

introduced to the board at the OPENING MEETING in SEPTEMBER.

Sincerely,

Joan McGee and Donna Magaro (acting Presidents)

GREEN TEAM UPDATE

The Green Team would like to extend a welcome to Rabbi Linda Joseph. We have exciting

plans for the upcoming year and we look forward to working with her.

We would also like to wish Rabbi Sherman all the best in his new position. He was responsible

for starting the Green Team and provided support and guidance. At the Shalom to the Shermans

we presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation and a book titled Green Faith by Fletcher

Harper. We will place another copy in the temple library.

The Green Team would like to welcome three new captains. Paul Westfall, Erica Altshul, and

Brett Altshul are joining David Potter and Carolyn Hudson to provide an extended green pro-

gram that will include more religious school programming as well as new environmental projects that will be announced in

the near future.

Now that we are facing the heat of summer, we’d like to remind everyone who waters lawns that the best time is early

morning. Later in the day most of the water evaporates before it gets to the grass. Excessive watering at night is not good

for grass.

To learn more about the Green Team, please visit

Please contact us at [email protected] if you have questions, or to volunteer.

Please consider earmarking your TOL donations for the Green Team.
