The mystery of the samechs: The last letter to make its appearance in the Torah is the samech. Remarkably, out of the 7,235 letters in the Sidra, there are only 7 samechs.

Haftarah 27 21 1130

“The Bark of Cain” There is a curious Midrash on the familiar story of Cain and Abel. As we all know, after he saw his brother’s sacrifice more favourably received by God, Cain slew Abel. We read that when God admonished him, declaring that it would be his fate to wander the world, Cain protests that he will be an immediate target for slaughter. It is in response to this that God sets a sign upon him to mark him out for life.

The rabbis of the Midrash debate: what was the sign? And what was its purpose?

Rabbi Yehuda says that God caused the sun to highlight him. This would be indicative of divine protection. Rabbi Nechemia retorts how inappropriate it would be to cause the sun to shine on such a wretch. Rather, Cain was afflicted with leprosy, consistent with later spiritual punishment. Rav says that God gave Cain a dog. Abba Yossi says, that Cain grew a horn. Rav says, that God made Cain an example to murderers. Rabbi Hanin says he was an example to penitents.

Clearly, we can understand the horn as either fearsome protection or hideous disfigurement. As he goes through life seeing people recoil in horror, Cain will be constantly reminded of the magnitude and revulsion of his sin.

But what on earth is meant by the idea that God gave Cain a dog? How could that be a sign? Ramban explains it as a guide dog. The dog went ahead of him and ensured he did not stumble into the greater danger of wild animals which would attack him without any moral compunction. Ramban further explains that Cain himself is a sign and a warning to humanity.

But how do we match Rav’s claim that God gave Cain a dog with his later statement that He made him an example to murderers?

Dogs are loving, loyal and affectionate to those who show them kindness. Of course they can turn savagely against those who betray them. In giving Cain a dog to guide him, God also made Cain responsible for his only dependable companion. If he wanted affection, he would need to show kindness and he would come to appreciate the interdependence which had eluded him in his relationship with Abel.

Cain’s dog is both protector and companion. A sign for interdependence and healthy relationships; that you must constantly invest if you hope for a return. But with the dog, the onus for initiative is exclusively upon Cain.

The midrash provides a touching symmetry. In the earlier Adam and Eve story, the serpent shows the animal kingdom to be the instigator of sin and destroyer of relationships. Cain’s dog is presented as a means of rehabilitation and of bonding.

May we learn to treat each other with kindness and compassion, appreciate the blessing of companionship and responsibility in relationships. May we choose friends who will guide us in the right direction and may we be true friends and guides to our fellows!

Wishing all friends on two feet and on four a Shabbat Shalom.

R’ Jeremy Lawrence

Haftarah 27 21 1130

The Rabbi Writes First of all, many thanks to everyone who contributed to the wonderful services and atmosphere at Kinloss over this very busy season.

As well as the many service leaders, we are deeply appreciative of the time and energy of our volunteers, CST, welcoming desk, the Office, our Caretaking Staff who make everything possible.

On Shabbat 20th October, we are delighted to be celebrating the centenary of the birth of President Chaim Herzog (born 17th September 1918) in Belfast.

The Service will be led by Chazan Shai Abrahamson, Chief Cantor of the IDF, in conjunction with the Neimah Singers.

His son, Isaac “Bougie” Herzog will be joining us for the Service. Isaac Herzog is currently Chair of the Jewish Agency, a former Chair of the Labour Party who has held several ministerial postings.

Kinloss will also be marking the Centenary of the Armistice with an exciting lecture

series 24th Oct through 5th December and a Civic Service on Sunday 11th November, the Armistice Anniversary itself.

The Service (7pm – 8.15pm) will be in conjunction with AJEX and with His Worshipful the Mayor Reuben Thompstone and Mike Freer MP.

Sacks Morasha students are preparing some Psalms.

We would like to feature other Kinloss youth in singing and a procession of flags. Interested families should be in touch with Barry.

If you have any WW1 memorabilia, we would be delighted to feature that on the evening. One congregant has a Serviceman’s Siddur which was with his relative who died in the trenches – and from which we will be honoured to read a prayer.

We are keen to hear from family members who would like to honour their parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts etc, and particularly those who served under other flags ranging from ANZAC to the Kaiser.

Our Beit Midrash Programme begins this Monday 8th October at 7.45pm with a shiur by Rabbi Andrews on Psukei DeZimra.

My Halachos of the Jewish Home Series resumes on Mon 15th at Mark & Eleanor’s with an overview on the laws of Handling Parev. Please call the office for further details.

I’m looking forward to interviewing Rev Giles Fraser on Thurs October 18th. He is a thought-provoking cleric and commentator on current affairs, with an interesting

personal story and perspective on Judaism.

There’s so much going on. I’m looking forward to seeing you in and around the shul. Mazal Tov to all our Baalei Simcha this week.

Shabbat Shalom,

R’ Jeremy Lawrence

THIS WEEK’S HAFTORAH BY RABBI ANDREWS This week’s Haftorah, Yishayahu (Isaiah) 42:5-43:10, presents the Navi’s (Prophet) view of the Torah’s first parsha (portion). Yishayahu opens with the declaration that Hashem (God ) created the Heavens, spread them out, and formed the Earth.

While the connection to this week’s Torah reading is obvious, we must ask the question as to why this specific chapter was chosen to be read as the Haftorah. Many other prophetic declarations also speak of God as Creator.

Also interesting to note is that creation is not the focus of these prophecies. Creation is only referenced in passing and quickly takes a backseat to other concerns. What seems to be of much higher interest to Yishayahu is how Hashem has, until that point, refrained from fully revealing Himself to the world.

Yishayahu assures us that the current concealed nature of God will change in the future. Hashem promises to make His presence so evident as to spur the Jewish people to sing shir chadash, a new song. A telling contrast is created in how the Jewish people, now described as blind and deaf to God, will find places of spirituality they could never have imagined.

This might be the reason why specifically this Haftorah was chosen. Maaseh Bereshit (creation) emphasises God’s power, yet, He sequestered Himself away thereafter to leave room for human be-chirah (free will). We, humans, tend to neglect to notice His presence, and this error often shapes how we view the world.

The Haftorah reminds us that Hashem will eventually return to make His presence know and, at that time, will fully redeem the Jewish people. Many today bemoan or complain about God’s hiddenness, pointing to it as a hindrance to faith and faithfulness. Our haftorah asks us to consider the balance between God’s hiddenness and openness, the values and costs of each.

If you find yourself at Kinloss over the course of the day, please stop by the office to say hello!I can usually be found there during the regular office hours (except Thursday).

GUIDED TOUR OF THE JEWISH EAST END & VISIT TO THE V&A MUSEUM OF CHILDHOODMonday 15th October 2018

A walk through time through the history of London’s Jewish community in the East End and a tour of the nation’s childhood collection of toys and childhood artefacts.

The tour encompasses a tale that embraces the poverty of the pogrom refugees and the glittering success of the Rothschilds; the eloquence of Prime Minister Disraeli and the spiel of the Petticoat Lane

stallholder. Set amid the alleys and back streets of colourful Spitalfields and Whitechapel, it’s a tale of synagogues and sweatshops, Sephardim and soup kitchens.

Meet your London Walks guide and fellow walkers by Tower Hill tube station. The Walk ends nearby Liverpool Street station. Then travel to Bethnal Green on the tube to The V&A Museum of Childhood, the

largest institution of its kind in the world. It holds numerous toy exhibits featuring rare, hand-crafted objects sitting alongside well-loved toys from the 20th century including a variety of furniture,

miniatures, dolls and games. The visit will include a guided tour as well as free time to peruse the four main galleries.

Transportation is not provided, more details will follow upon booking.Cost of the trip £15 Kinloss members, £20 non-members
